Obama Proposes Massive Increase in Science Funding

By Michael D. Shear
Somewhat overshadowed by the swine flu crisis today was President Obama's call for dramatically increasing the amount spent on basic science research.

The president said in a speech to the National Academy of Sciences that the United States should increase the amount of government and private money spent on scientific research to three percent of the nation's economic output.

"We will not just meet, but we will exceed the level achieved at the height of the space race, through policies that invest in basic and applied research, create new incentives for private innovation, promote breakthroughs in energy and medicine, and improve education in math and science," he said. "This represents the largest commitment to scientific research and innovation in American history."

Obama did not, however, say how long that would take, and he did not specifically address how the federal government would make that happen.

He did outline several increases in funding for science, including money for the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Energy and a commitment to double the budgets of three key science agencies over the next 10 years.

Obama also sought to tie his broader science initiatives to more immediate health concerns.

"If there was ever a day that reminded us of our shared stake in science and research, it's today. We are closely monitoring the emerging cases of swine flu in the United States. And this is obviously a cause for concern and requires a heightened state of alert. But it's not a cause for alarm," he said.

It is nice to see a President that is working to fund science research.
We need to be to take some risks and think
about ideas that will change the world.
60 Minutes just did a great story on Cold Fusion, this could be a break through form of alterntaive energy. It seems the company they profiled in the story Energetic Technologies is making great strides.
Here is a link to their website if you want to learn more.

The country will be much better off with science funding than corporation and corporate executive funding.

Typical right-wing no-nothings: science is a waste in their book...nevermind that jpl developed information technology, that put the US at the forefront of that sector's revolution. Where do they think microwave technology or nuclear energy came from, the Vaccines that have saved a few generations from the terror of small pox, polio etc. Now problem spending money on weapon systems to kill people they don't like, or prisons instead of schools.

Of coure the Palin supporters are critical of this decision- they don't believe in science- especially anything that messes with God' work- like tem cell research. even after techniques were developed avoiding fetal cells- why are the against-cause someone told them to be. They don't believe in evolution, despite the applications of transgenic crops that eliminate the use of toxic pesticides in many types of food crops.

Is it any wonder that the once point of the vanguard in technology and applied science is falling behind, India and Brazil nowadays, as the tune in to Rush and Beck and Hannity to receive all the education the think they will ever need?
But then again, ignoramuses like those on the right have been withus throughout history- they hounded and persecuted Copernicus and Galileo in their time. We can see why Americans are rejecting "policies" of the least educated part of our society.

The only thing that Drunken Sailor of a Pretense of an Executive should be throwing Money at, is LOANS for Millions of Cash-Strapped Americans so we can get moving with our lives again!

And maybe Fuel for Air Force One to take an extended stay in Mexico City! ;~)

It is obvious that we need to send the Comrade-In-Chief to immediate debt counseling. Now we know it felt like watching Nero fiddle while Rome burned. Obama has diarrhea of the mouth. Someone put some duct tape over that hole and we have found the solution to global warming.

Lets be honest: new techniques and technologies developed here in the United States will be programmed and manufactured in India, China, and anywhere else workers are either utterly oppressed or otherwise unsaddled by environmental, worker, product safety, modern militaries, ambitious manned space programs, social safety nets, and other taxes, and the poverty and wretched standards of living of such countries imported here, per usual, along with H1B visa droids by the tens of thousands because of the so-called shortage of capable US citizen workers.

The only difference is that we are mow using tax dollars to accelerate our race to national poverty.

"He is making us all POOR so that he can give America's money to the IMF to support all the other "impoverished nations" of the world."

IMF usury is itself a cause of poverty. Neoclowns and neoliberals used financing schemes to enslave other countries, esp South American ones. Now the banks, and other financiers, have done the same to us. Both parties are to blame.

Point of information for Mr. Shear:

Is there an ethics panel that reviews projects prior to funding? How much "science" funding goes to ethically questionable defense- or intel-related projects involving microwave radiation weapons, mind control, eugenics, etc.?

TEAM OBAMA: How about the Bush-Cheney spawned HOMELAND TORTURE that's STILL HAPPENING?

Bush-Cheney- spawned torture is NOT just a foreign affair.

The "Extrajudicial Punishment Network" it created or expanded enables citizen vigilantes affiliated with federally-funded volunteer community policing and public safety groups to stalk, harass, terrorize -- and YES, torture.

With microwave radiation "directed energy weapons" -- apparently OK'ed for use on detainees AND U.S. citizens by still-secret Bush "torture memos."

This "American Gestapo" has co-opted and corrupted local law enforcement nationwide -- a grassroots-based authoritarian apparatus "hiding in plain sight."

Please, White House staff, read this. Your Bush holdovers already know all about it.

What have they told YOU?

Every time that blabbermouth opens his mouth I want to puke! Why doesn't he just SHUT UP! And why does he hate us so much? He ought to get rid of that chip on his shoulder.

Reply to Bcamp55: I like your style! You are so right on!! He's p^ssed away our 401k, and possibly the company we work for.

To President B.O. the definition of "stimulus" is "stimulating the economy to crash and burn." He couldn't have just taken over the presidency like a normal human being -- he had to be a s.o.b. about it. He is making us all POOR so that he can give America's money to the IMF to support all the other "impoverished nations" of the world. He's gleeful that we are hurting! He's George Soros' puppet.

Does Obozzo wake up every morning and read the headlines to get the days stories to determine how he is going to p^ss away more money.

Hey Buckwheat - what's this here swing flu thing? I don't knows Amos but I bet we can waste billions on it.
