Obama Says U.S. Can't Confront Problems Alone

By Michael A. Fletcher
President Obama, speaking days after returning from his first overseas trip since taking office, said the most critical problems confronting the nation and the world could be solved only through international cooperation.

"These are challenges that no single nation, no matter how powerful, can confront alone," Obama said today in his weekly radio and Internet address. "The United States must lead the way. But our best chance to solve these unprecedented problems comes from acting in concert with other nations."

Major obstacles such as climate change, the global financial crisis, terrorism and nuclear proliferation demand coordinated action to overcome, Obama said.

It was a point he made during his eight-day trip to Europe, Turkey and Iraq. As he appealed for international cooperation, Obama spoke candidly about American mistakes and made the point that many nations now have a voice in shaping global policy.

His tone overseas drew sharp criticism from some analysts who said Obama's approach diminished American power, even as it brought little of the help he sought for more economic stimulus spending and help fighting extremists in Afghanistan.

But speaking during Passover and on the eve of Easter, Obama reaffirmed his stance.

"They are both occasions to think more deeply about the obligations we have to ourselves and the obligations we have to one another, no matter who we are, where we come from, or what faith we practice," Obama said.

The president said that the world could ill afford to remain stuck on old disagreements.

"With all that is at stake today, we cannot afford to talk past one another. We can't afford to allow old differences to prevent us from making progress in areas of common concern. We can't afford to let walls of mistrust stand," he said. "Instead, we have to find - and build on - our mutual interests. For it is only when people come together, and seek common ground, that some of that mistrust can begin to fade. And that is where progress begins."

I think that it is only right that countries should cooperate in dealing with the pirate situation. France should bomb them on Fridays and Saturdays. England gets Mondays and Tuesdays. We bomb them on Wednesdays and Thursdays. However, because we are Christians, never on Sunday.

GET YOUR FACTS PRIOR TO POSTING:

Obama's involvement in the decision to authorize lethal force was legally required, officials said, because it was a hostage situation, not combat, and unrelated to the already authorized U.S. effort against Al Qaeda and other terror groups, officials said.

“It’s not a combat operation, so the lawyers wanted to ensure this was done right," said a second defense official.

Quote Pat NJ: "Congress failed in its duty to impeach..." What impeachment? None was ever introduced. In fact they would have to impeach themselves as they approved the methods used:

"The basic outcome had been expected, but it was preceded by months of intense disagreement within the administration about where to draw the line on C.I.A. interrogations. The new list of techniques has been approved by the Justice Department as not violating the Geneva strictures, a step that Congress insisted on last October when it passed the Military Commissions Act, which formally authorized the C.I.A. program."
Have you been attacked since 9/11? It's people like you that are what is the matter with this nation today. Uneducated about your own congress.

"They are both occasions to think more deeply about the obligations we have to ourselves and the obligations we have to one another."

As long as Obama refuses to meet his obligation to prosecute the torturers who occupied the White House before him, he is a fraud -- and worse, an accessory.

As a Senator, he enabled the torturers by refusing to demand immediate impeachment. Now he protects them from prosecution.

Denouncing torture, while enabling and protecting the torturers, is intolerable duplicity.

Congress failed in its duty to impeach. No after-the-fact truth commission can erase the stain of that failure. Only by confronting truth, admitting that appalling failure and prosecuting the torturers, can we even begin to redeem ourselves.

Bush and Cheney turned the USA into a War Criminal Nation. Until Obama and our so-called "leaders" in Congress back their words with deeds, we remain so.

Who is "you guys"? Apparently you are under the mistaken belief that I vote Republican. I am a Libertarian. Keep the government out of my business. My state has a surplus of 14 BILLION dollars with no state income tax and it was responsible for 70% of all new jobs created in 2008 in the nation. All because our legislature meets for 90 days every two years. "Feel good about America leading by example"! I wish, but you are under delusion again. we are so far down the line in health, longevity, education, student exams, infrastructure, mass transportation, etc., and we are fast headed toward socialism.

Granting permission to the right people is doing something.

Knowing what not to do can be as important as knowing what to do.

If McCain or Palin had presided over this victory at sea, you guys would be claiming it couldn't have happened with a democrat in charge.

Arrogance, impetuousness, and bellicosity have seen their day. The world doesn't need its last best hope acting like a drunken fifteen year old waving a pistol in its face. Even if it worked, it's disgraceful behaviour, and we're better than that.

If you can't feel good about America leading by example, then I feel sorry for you. If your false pride takes you down, that's an unneccessary loss, but it's your choice.

No, Rooster, I admit nothing. The prez did nothing. The pentagon requested his permission to act first, and he granted it.

"President Barack Obama had granted the Pentagon's request for standing authority to use appropriate force to save the life of the captain...

He would still be hoping for World Peace and sitting on his hands if the pentagon and the military hadn't acted. Admit it, as the MSNBC live vote is indicating, with over 2 million votes on his approval rating now:

Thank you Mr. President. Finally a man who understands that the US needs to lead in things such as infrastructure, education, and production again rather than power. I've read over all of these comments and some of them blow my mind. No, I'm not going to sit here and bash the GOP or those who oppose Obama for the very reason that Obama went on his trip and is trying to reduce nuclear arms. It's time to put childish things away and quit fighting. We're part of a global system and the US needs to reverse this big bad fighting force attitude and start leading the world in profitable things such as energy so that we can strongly profit off of something the rest of the world wants. Happy Easter everyone, Jesus's message may come true yet because God blesses the WHOLE world, not just America.

He's so right because the U. S. did not cause these problems alone. So the new new prez. did a better job by accident than the old one did on purpose.

Republicans are good at spending money, blowing things up, putting people in jail. They just seem to be incapable of actually solving problems.

Reagan lost 250 Marines in Lebanon in one day then promptly gave the terrorists exactly what they wanted. He attacked Grenada so no one would notice, and it worked.....oh except some of us "typical libs" noticed. Actually I'm a realist who values results over intentions.

Admit it. You second guessers blew it on this one, but the American people won. It's a great Easter for this brave captain! Celebrate with us.

What wing-nuts could never figure out is that yes, there was an international order, indeed. But it was an international order that *we* imposed on our own terms after WWII when we were the sole serious power, and that order had us as the leader of every international organization. It was a world order in name, but an extension of American power in fact. Who cared if little countries ranted in the U.N.? We picked the Secretary General and had veto power. It was vastly in our interest to preserve that status quo.

But the wing-nuts heard "world order" and went nuts. They got power for eight years and made us tear that whole order down. They never considered that, in a shrinking world, there *will* be a world order, whether we like it or want it or not. The only question is, who leads it?

So now that the old world order that we lead has been discredited and dismissed and dismantled by wing-nuts, and someone has to build a new world order. But now we're not the sole power anymore. We're sitting here with two wars we can't win and an economy in ruins. We are no longer acknowledged as the natural leader of international organizations. This new world order that will rise is therefore inherently less favorable to us then the old one we were made to tear apart.

We ran the world. But the wing-nuts decided that was bad. So now we don't run the world. I hope they are happy with their ignorant, self-destructive, pyrrhic victory.

I thought this guy was supposed to be so smart--NOT. We are on our own and if he doesn't grow a spine real quick and stop calling for "everyone else to do something" we are all in danger, everyday, in our every day life. He is in so far over his head, his weakness and ineptness becomes more obvious everyday. And the bad guys know it. I shudder to think of THAT day that is coming..........

Quote: "America IS the greatest nation on earth, but as of late the behavior in the international "sand box" has been abysmal, this needs rectifying whether you like it or not."

In what?, military power? We used to be "the greatest nation in the world". No longer. We still think that we are, but we are WAY DOWN THE LIST in education, student testing, health, longevity, infrastructure, public transportation, manufacturing, etc. The list goes on and on. The greatest nation in the world. We wish, get real.

To JRM2 and your ilk. America has nothing to apologize for. You are an insult to all of the great Americans that have fought and given their lives so that parts of the World can remain free. Comparing the US to Nazi Germany and the Nuremberg trials is the most imbecilic statement I have read in a long time. If you are embarrassed then move out of the Country.

It is time that the People stand up for the Constitution and this great country. The only problem we have is an out of control government making decisons for the interest of bankers and Wall-Street. This has been true whether it is Bush or now Obama.

I am proud to be an American. I do not know what Country you are from.

JRM2-
It's good to see your post again.

If the jingoist bigot blowhards posting on this site want to shoot off their arrogant ignorant mouths to the rest of the world, then they have the right to do so, but they don't speak for the majority of us who have grown up and have put away childish things. They had their day, and it was, predictably, an unmittigated disaster. Now they're throwing tantrums. Consistently childish.

Those who humble themselves will be exalted. Those who exalt themselves will be humbled. Time to stop bragging about being Christian, and start acting like Christians. Incidentally, Jesus who was not an American, said, "If anyone wishes to be great, he must be the servant of ALL." Take it up with Him.

obama is an incompetent inconsiderate two-faced marxist Liar.
He is not trust worthy.
57,000,000 million voted against this man who with ACORN-SCHUMMMMMMMMMMMER, reid, peloski, frank, dodd raped the taxpayers with their housin-banking scandal.
If the election was held today 80,000,000 would vote against obama and he could go back to his chicago mafia.
Stop obama now.

There is no defense for Obama. This is our country, not his. He should be ashamed of himself. He should move to France and wave the white flag. Americans need to wake up and get this ignorant President out of office. He cannot continue to through krap at the fan its not sticking anymore. As for you Obama supporters, this is all your fault for voting this starlit into office. You should be ashamed.

Baraq Obama certainly borrowed that quote fro Vladimir Putin who has said repeatedly that "any effort by the U.S. to solve the world's problems unilaterally is hopeless." And of course Putin also likened George Buss to "a mad man running around with a straight razor in his hand and trying to solve his problems." Obama seems to have decide after his recent trip to Europe to turn around and preach cooperation because it became clear there that nobody wanted to follow the U.S., and
the only alternative was to join them or go it alone.

But I also see here that some of those so-called experts, who never get tired of being wrong, say now that Obama's attitude of co-operation with other nations " will diminish American power!" Well, American power as applied with Bush's delusional bravado has turned the U.S. into a curse in the planet - not into a leader. But that has always been the problem here since those supposed experts are indirectly funded by the U.S. government to produce ideas and
theories supportive of the U.S. foreign policy. Those opinions are basically worthless because they are custom produced to support the payee, and similar to the opinions of doctors who prescribe drugs by the manufacturers who has given them big royalties fee to push them.

Can we be successful around the world if we just make our decision about something - as George Bush and Robert Cheney did with the war in Iraq - and then pay those opinion roosters to justify it. History has taught us that those opinions can only lead us to blunders, and it is about time to cut funding to those propaganda institutes and foundations, and close the production lines from producing more of their doom and boom scenarios that have made the U.S. the most hated nation on earth. The president should, then, send those hired guns masquerading as experts to the unemployment office, and start listening to the American people. Nikos Retsos, retired professor

Obama is the worst President ever. Bush had a good four years, followed by a bad four years. Obama has yet to do anything to improve America. All he has done is made the economy worse. Tripled the national debt. He has made America a joke to the terrorists of the world. They will continue to do things like this and probably escalate the attacks. We have a President with not a single shred of military awareness. He has zero testicular fortitude. He should be impeached before he completely ruins America for some years to come.

Is he talking about the choice of toppings at his glutton Pizza Party while the public is in food stamp lines, or is this about the huge and foreign decision of getting a dog by a mentally ill man who cannot stand to share limelight with an animal?
If the World is now calling Obama a severely damaged NPD sociopathic dysfunctional, and Americans sheeple for following Kommander Kenya, after his trip away. It wouldn't appear that they are going to follow the 4 guys and an out of gas inflatable standoff, by granting Obama any credibility at all.

trippermeow: Taking the kool-aid intravenously I see, thanks for the Hannity talking points, you are a good parrot.

It's called reality and has nothing to do with manhood, whether you want to believe it or not, every great nation needs cooperation with their allies or they fall, that is what history has shown us.

America IS the greatest nation on earth, but as of late the behavior in the international "sand box" has been abysmal, this needs rectifying whether you like it or not.

It takes a bigger person to admit their wrongs, and there has been much wrongdoing over the past 8 years. If you don't think that America should apologize to the world for torture, then may I suggest you read about the Nuremberg trials.

In Obama's defense, American 'power' was compromised by the petulant 'with us or the terrorists' behavior of Bush's regime. So, in many ways the world is due an apology by this country. America will be made to eat a healthy dose of 'crow' for it's behavior.

A little cheese to go with your WHINE? This great country apologizes to NO ONE, and never receives thanks for being the worlds policeman. Try growing up lib, you might actually start to enjoy life, and who knows, if you start bathing and kick the crack habit, you may even find yourself employeed.

We do not need socialism or signing away our Constitutional rights to organizations outside the US. Cap and Trade, UN taxing authority, and Obama agreeing to allow financial controls of our businesses to foreign interests is not the way to go. This is rhetoric leading up to selling out the American People in the interest of the "common good". We need more Czars comrades.

We do not owe an apology to anyone. If the foreign countries do not want our troops or money then take it away. Let's see how they do on their own. The Europeans have had a free ride long enough they can start patrolling and pay for the security in their own backyard. Obama is an embarrassment sniveling and bowing to foreign powers.

Just call him "Coward and Chief". This is why you don't put a democRAT in the White House, no matter how nice they look or how many books he/she has written. We can prevent wimps like Obama from ever getting near the White House in the future if we simply stop letting stupid people from voting. Now that would be CHANGE I could believe in!!

Like it or not, America - you are being held accountable by the world for your choice to put the corporatist Bush in charge of this country for 8 years. It's high time to realize the mistake and be a better citizen of the world for a change instead of a corporatist consumer. The world has made clear they will not be made to pay for the mistakes of this country as it foisted Friedmanist corporatism under the guise of 'global economy' on the world.

These weekly addresses are more for political statements and PR rather than reassuring ordinary Americans.

Obama's just playing into the old Bush strategy of talking up foreign threats while the economy continues to fizzle.
