Work-Life Balance a Challenge, Says Michelle Obama, But Having White House Staff Helps

By DeNeen L. Brown
First lady Michelle Obama called her "current life" in the White House "a very blessed situation, because I have what most families don't have -- tons of support all around, not just my mother, but staff and administration. I have a chief of staff and a personal assistant, and everyone needs that."

"Everyone should have a chief of staff and a set of personal assistants," Obama said with a laugh as she spoke before a crowd of business executives meeting today during a "Corporate Voices for Working Families" conference at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington.

Along with the issues of community service and military families, Obama has said as first lady she wants to focus on the struggles of working families.

During her 10-minute speech, Obama advocated for sick leave for parents, flexible work hours for employees and on-site child care, which she said "is something that keeps many of us up at night....You're just wondering where are we going to put our children where we feel like that they're being safe, that they're safe and being loved. That will relieve many of the stresses that parents feel on the job throughout the day."

VIDEO | Michelle Obama Talks About Her Life Change

Obama said she personally knows the challenges of balancing work and family "trying to do a good job at both -- and always feeling like you're not quite living up to either -- and trying not to pit one against the other, really trying to balance."

She called herself someone who strives to do more than 100 percent at work. "If people here are like me -- I call myself a 120-percenter. If I'm not doing any job at 120 percent, I think I'm failing. So if you're trying to do that at home and at work, you find it very difficult and stressful and frustrating."

Obama told the story of her own childhood, growing up in Chicago with a father who worked as a city employee at a time when he could make enough money to allow her mother to stay home with the children.

"When I look back on my childhood and the life that my parents provided, working-class folks with not a lot of money, my father was a blue-collar city worker who worked a shift job," she said. "But because he earned enough as a shift worker without a college degree, he could still support a family of four on that salary. And because he could, with that salary, support us -- we rented a home, we didn't live lavishly -- my mother was able to stay at home. She could afford to make the choice not to go to work while we were growing up. That was how families balanced back then."

She said the economic situation has changed today. "One income really doesn't always cut it anymore. And that's in my lifetime," Obama said. "In most families, both parents have to work, and even if people want to make the choice to stay home. And again, there is no subjective analysis or -- of what is better. But people can't make the choice. It's even harder for single parents, and there are millions of them all across this country who are trying to build a life for themselves and their children, and they find in an economy that's tough that they're not just holding down one but they need a couple of jobs just to make ends meet."

Obama said when she was an executive, she learned that giving her employees more flexibility helped their productivity.

"I found that as I've managed staff, the more flexibility and opportunities that I gave them to be good parents, the more commitment that they made to working with me, the less likely they were to leave because they wouldn't find the same sort of situation somewhere else," Obama said. "So this isn't just about family balance. This is about making work places stronger and more effective, and keeping and attracting the most qualified people. This research is critical to empowering employers and is politically -- particularly important during our current economic climate."

mrs obama is wrong....a double income is NOT needed...it's wanted. get rid of cell phones, cable, high-speed internet, 2 leased or new cars, expensive clothes and accessories, too much house...etc.

Axiom?

For people who have stomped emotion into a singularity over the past eight years to mention the word "axiom" (LET ME BE CLEAR **as if you are afraid of propaganda**) to say anything about emotion having an effect is a bit ridiculous. Emotion got your man elected!

Wowwiezowie zipzamzoom!

thanks, bluehour, for the good fight. the article is linked on FoxNation too. that's why so many kookoos. (oh don't get your panties in a bunch.) anyway, they don't seem to have read the entire article. seems like they stopped at the headline, never bothering to read her full comments which were nothing less than empathetic to real working families. reading the headline alone, the kookoos rehashed every single paranoid fantasy ever offered and sopped up at the wingnut trough. i believe i saw that whole birth certificate thing come up again.

anyway, bluehour, thanks again for the effort. but you gotta keep in mind that old axiom about arguing with fools. futile and daggone tiring business. i definitely appreciate the want of a healthy debate, but you aint gonna find it in an article linked from drudge or foxnation.

Insult the President all you like, fe. But if what you say is racist and juvenile it could well be pointed out. A little wit and imagination would go a long way when insulting or merely criticizing Obama policies, as opposed to just repeating the same stupid 200-year old racist crap.

Not a big fan of John Kerry as the nominee that year. Was pretty critical of him myself.

Well, these exchanges could probably go on forever with no visible result. Keep dreaming about your:

libertarian
conservative
theocratic
maoist
gun-totin' feminist
or
[inset your own ideologically-driven utopian ideal here]

...utopia. The rest of us have to live in the real world, no time to give a flying fork about Michelle's shoes or dress choices, have a lot of work to do, have to make some hard choices and compromises so America can go forward and become stronger.

Post-ID, my work is not internet-based, does not involve "ripping off" people, nor does it have anything to do with Obama or politics. You get the dummy buzzer for every ansswer, but thanks for playing the game! I do quite okay, but am not rich.

Posted by: bluehour | May 10, 2009 2:52 AM

Post-ID, I am the boss at my job, fyi.

I don't see all criticism of the Obamas as racist. Believe it or not, a couple of my friends didn't vote for Obama and are critical of him. Misguided dears. And they're not racists, just conservatives.

But when it is blatantly racist, I say so. And much of it in this forum (and others all over the web) is disgustingly racist. The tenor of the debate is comparable to that of nasty schoolgirls gossipping in the women's room. And that is rather disheartening. After all, the world is in a big mess, we have a lot of work to do, and exchanges like this aren't really productive, are they?

If Laura Bush had made this kind of comment her first few months in office, there would have been such an uproar in the press! They would have roasted her over an open fire. But of course, Michelle Obama can do no wrong. This woman is so out of touch with main stream America. Why people faun over this bigoted woman with absolutely NO common sense is beyond me.

Posted by: rc_lifeguard | May 9, 2009 10:58 PM

About "bluehour"'s preposterous racism, here's the simple guideline:

"bluehour" preceives any criticism of Michelle Obama as being "racist" BECUASE "bluehour" is involved in a racist perception of M. Obama (as also Barack, by earlier remarks).

And then "bluehour" criticises others who pose critical comments about Michelle Obama as them being "racists" BECAUSE "bluehour" IS INVOLVED IN RACIALIST PERCEPTIONS.

Michelle Obama, as some have said, DOES look like a gorilla, and it has nothing to do with her race but with her appearance. Me, I think she looks like a piranha with her gaping, biting, viscious jaw. Or perhaps a blue tick, latched onto other people's property and sucking away at it.

Posted by: POST-ID | May 9, 2009 4:52 PM

bluehour, if this is you "at work," then your employer is being scammed or else he's paying you to type Obama-Propaganda all over the internet.

Either way, your employer is not creating a product any or few consumers want or respect.

If you are self-employed, well, then, that figures and I'm betting what income you're enjoying is from ripping others off. LIke spamming the internet as you're doing here.

But, keep it up because it establishes abundant proof of your rotten "product" B&M Obama.

Michelle Obama: "The Queen of Parasites."

Excellently accurate title.

Posted by: POST-ID | May 9, 2009 4:39 PM

GC15: the answer to your question ("The infatuation with Barack Hussein/Michelle Obama boggles my mind? Why cannot People see who got elected? Feels like only handful of us retained sanity?" you asked), the answer to your question is found among rudimentary pscyhology.

People who adulte invest THEMSELVES into or upon that or whom they adulate. This can be found in the whole Leftwing "celebrity" or "star" worship, the apparent insanity of emotionally melting down when someone is merely shown on a stage or in a photo, the IDOL WORSHIP factor or, rather, that some people NEED to create idols and find other human beings (or, in Barack and Michelle's case, themselves) as idols, upon whom some people project themselves in ideological perfection or establish "proof" of their unquavering concepts of perfection, supremacy, that which is "perfect" and above all else.

When there's a question posed, then, about the idol or idols, those persons get angry and attack whoever isn't affirming the idol's position. It's a case of idealism being threatened and when that happens, it threatens, then, the very "absent personhood" of the idol worshipper -- their idol is the all, if you question their idol, you question THEIR "all."

They've invested their entire concept of what should be and is onto some figure (or themselves, as in the case of B&M O), so, if there's any question raised anywhere at any time, the response is bitter, angry, destructive.

It's also why some people eventually direct their same anger onto their idols: when the questions about their idols begin to take effect, sometimes they turn upon the idols for being "corrupt" somehow, or, less than they've idolized.

This is what's taking place among the B&M Obama worshippers. They idolized the two to such an extent that their very lives are shaken terribly IF they so much as allow one question about their idols "to stand" -- so they attack anyone raising so much as a squeak about their idols.

Keep digging yesobama - Kenya thrived on the slave trade until they were forced to give it up.

Posted by: dubiousbrother2 | May 9, 2009 4:24 PM

Whoa all you dude/ettes!! When addressing the issues of the Obamessiah and the Obamama try to keep a wee bit of perspecctive. The dinosaur media and its subsidiary echo-chambers have done far more than Mr. and Mrs. The One could or would possibly do to keep race in the forefront of all current discussion. The fawning, knee-pad adorned votaries in the dino-media have done everything that any self-respecting right-winger (such as moi) could dream of to set the Obamessiah administration up for what will eventually become intense and crirical scrutiny.

Posted by: alfrede1 | May 9, 2009 4:20 PM

DubiousBrother,
You sound like a brilliant Ditto-head. I little history for you. African Americans like Michelle Obama are descendants of West Africa as were the slaves that came to America. Kenya is in East Africa. I know your trying to say that President Barack has Arabic ancestry (thus enslaved Africans), since you heard Rush say it, but actually Barack's father was from the Luya tribe, and they are a Black Bantu tribe that DON'T speak Arabic. In fact most Luya people are not even Muslim. More progress, and long live the Obama Legacy!!!

Posted by: yesobama | May 9, 2009 3:47 PM

Bluehour - It seems difficult to leave race out of the MO discussion since the dems made a point of mobilizing the black vote and 95% of blacks voted for BO predominately because he is 1/2 black. You may not want to dig too deep into the BO ancestry (see your Bush reference) or you may just find that BO's Kenyan ancestors were the ones that forced MO's ancestors into slavery. Back on topic, MO is getting used to the whole concept of slavery though.

I love to read all these negative posts from you Obama haters. Its clear that there's nothing that Michelle can ever do right in your eyes and you will hate her as long as she walks the Earth. You don't have the guts to openly admit that you can't stand the fact that a Black woman has more education then you will ever have in your life, from Universities that you will never attend and lives in a house you will never step foot in. Long live the legacy of Obama!!! Oh haters, your wicked envy proves that we are making progress. :)

Posted by: yesobama | May 9, 2009 3:32 PM

Now that anti-whitey elitist bitter Michelle has her little people, does this nullify racist & cultic black liberation theology?---probably not until the wealth is spread around more to the welfare blacks (and our country comes to near ruin in the current revolution). I read more and more "I shouldn't have voted for Obama." Before the election, a lot of brainwashed youth told me they were voting for him "because he's cool" not knowing a thing about his anti-American ideology.

Posted by: techsavvy777 | May 9, 2009 3:03 PM

Sgarmin1, could not agree with you more. But what has happened to American People? The infatuation with Barack Hussein/Michelle Obama boggles my mind? Why cannot People see who got elected? Feels like only handful of us retained sanity? The 2012 year cannot come soon enough!!!

Of all the first lady’s of the United States, we are seeing the social elite without class without the skill set to represent the People of the United States. We have seen the President Obama bow to a Saudi King, path the head of the Queen of England, return national gifts as if they were unwanted and in one grand insult DVD’s from the White House gift shop “clearance section” to Prime Minister of England (of course wrong format to boot).

The Obama’s are not the Kennedy’s, they are not the Johnson’s and no where near the Regan’s. Somehow these highly educated (questionable at the Least) cannot dwell in the world of leaders without insulting every American.

When you consider the idea that there are twenty Teleprompters for the Obama, a personal staff in the hundreds for both her and him, we still see mistakes such as 56 states and when he attempts to speak in terms that are unrelated to basketball. I firmly believe that these two idiots, yes idiots, are setting back America’s leadership in the world to 19th century level.

I wonder why her father was able to feed her family on just his "shift salary"?

Maybe because the tax code back then wasn't as onerous as it is today.

Too bad her husband will do nothing to fix that.

Tax and spend, tax and spend.... They never learn.

Posted by: prophet_5 | May 9, 2009 11:46 AM

NOOBs! The Obamas are in way over their heads. BOTH of them.

He doesn't have the class or stature to be a world leader. She doesn't have the grace to be first lady, and she is almost certainly a racist.

Liberals: the 2008 electoral orgasm is over. The NOOB white house will be politically neutralized by a conservative congressional takeover in 2010--just like Clinton was neutralized in 1994. So grab a towel and wipe yourself off, and get ready to go back to reality.

Posted by: NOOBama | May 9, 2009 11:34 AM

Simple Solution: Make on site day care tax deductible. Hiring someone in your home, especially for multiple children is no more than off site day care. It creates more employment and if it was deductible more W2 withholding because you would have to document the expense. Mrs. Obama needs to propose realistic solutions immediately and quit dreaming. We know the problems how fast can we change, why have we made change so difficult to implement? Stop talking and let's move forward.

Ha! Good one. Something about your screen name says THAT is a lie. And we all know that condoning that behavior is soooo morally superior to actually doing it, right "shoegal_69". I mean really, isn't that the progressive liberal mantra? Why shoot for a bullseye if I might miss? And, geez, when I screw up and inconvenience MYSELF, I can just legislate (steal) getting someone else's money to get me out of a jam! Or murder (abort) a fellow American because it might make me cry to know someone else is responsible enough to ACTUALLY RAISE that American.

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit. All are endowed by their Creator. That is the gist of what is written. Not endowed by the little "parasite's" host. Endowed by their Creator. So what makes you think you can kill them and strip them of those rights? Must be an interesting mind to have to live in, 69. Thinking you could write a bill of rights more brilliant than that of the Founding Fathers of our Great Country. Just another American Idol contestant needing a reality check. Mrs. Obama is in the same boat intellectually.

120%er? Right. More like 1%er. Maybe I'll send her a patch for her avant-garde wardrobe. I wonder if she would connect the dots and realize that her avant-garde interpretation of the First Lady's role subconsciously manifestd within her thoughtless wardrobe decisions reflects exactly how thoughtless and borderline criminal her interpretations of our constitution are. She has the foresight of a flea. Too bad she is carrying the disease of Marxism. Now THAT is a dangerous social parasite.

The "let them eat cake" attitude saturates a lot of what she says and does, doesn't it? She is coming off as the queen of parasites. And she doesn't even know it.

Not brilliant. Not even close.

You're right, JakeD, Laura Bush took a lot of unfair flak for killing a classmate in a car crash, accidentally. (Don't remember her race ever entering the discussion.)

Michelle Obama is taking even more flak, though, for buying a good pair of athletic shoes and making a few innocuous comments about her staff. Judging by many of the comments criticizing MO, race is a factor for a scary number of her opponents.

Posted by: bluehour | May 9, 2009 10:08 AM

I'm at work, JakeD.

Posted by: bluehour | May 9, 2009 10:01 AM

JakeD, you see Marie Antoinette, I see a woman who is not used to having servants, who comments on it and on their hard work, and made a joke. Laura Bush has a fair bit of baggage herself. She might have become a big target -- you know what I mean -- but her husband's opponents tended to leave her alone since she wasn't the one in the catbird seat. Doesn't Michelle deserve the same consideration? Are Obama's opponents grownup enough and classy enough to give her that consideration? I don't mean you specifically, as I haven't heard anything racist from you though, and I thank you for that. But what I've seen so far from most opponents of Obama is shockingly racist, ugly and low, very low.

Great post! Sounds like you are doing everything right. Just remember that your most important "job" is mother. Kids growing up with the right values, into productive citizens, are this country's last chance. We may never recover if the next generation turns out as selfish as the Baby Boomers.

Posted by: JakeD | May 9, 2009 9:29 AM

I don't know who called Bush a chimp way back when. I didn't. Referring to one white guy as a chimp (because of his IQ I suspect), is very different from referring to a whole group of people, because of their race, as chimps. The first is a personal insult to Bush, no doubt, but not to all white guys. The terminology has different resonance in the black community than in the white because it has a long history as a racist slur.

And surely Bush didn't have to hear all the lame-a*s jokes about a watermelon patch at the white house and on and on from people clearly stuck pre-Amos and Andy as far as their perception of black people goes.

I don't recall people attacking Laura Bush the way Michelle has been attacked, not even close.

Posted by: bluehour | May 9, 2009 9:24 AM

She does make some good points, I suppose and I assume that she means well. Nonetheless, her job in the hospital was created with help from her husband. So, she's not the average American. Plus, it's interesting that she's talking about day care when she has her mom living at the White House to care for the kids (yet they now hire a babysitter so much since Mom is hobnobbing around DC). I digress...

However, a reminder of why many people HAVE to work (that is, both parents) (at least here in NY) is because the property TAXES are astronomical. And, of course, she is proposing more governmental intervention which will simply lead to even higher taxes.

I am college educated, with an MBA, but am staying home with my kids right now. I worked for several years until having them, and it was a personal choice. We have made sacrifices, but it was a choice. My husband is paid below the average salary for the area (and he has a doctoral degree). Our finances are tight, but we are very thrifty and are saving money as we can. We would be in a far better position if it were not for the fact that our property taxes are four times of many other areas of the country. So, I blame the government. Nonetheless, my family can do SOMETHING - we can move, and we will be in the next year - to an area with much lower taxes.

As for the personal assistants, I can understand why a First Lady does have a small staff, whether I really agree with her husband or NOT. However, she didn't mention the makeup artist that she employs; that's taking it too far. Many of our politicians (and their wives) are NOT really in touch with average Americans, even though they pretend to be.

Posted by: TAGW | May 9, 2009 9:20 AM

bluehour;

So, you're saying that no one called GWB "chimp" either? If we are supposed to denounce every racist comment here, we can hold you to the same standard. BTW: you did comment about prior First Ladies, but I know for a fact that Laura Bush publically thanked White House staff before.

Unfortunately, there are racists in every party. I think that some of the "racist" comments below were posted by Democrats trying to pretend they were Republican racists. BTW: didn't they call GWB "chimp" first?

If you read through the posts, you'll see I took issue with a comment of yours about people of a certain complexion, to lightly paraphrase your words as well as with other unbelievably racist comments on this board which don't seem to offend you in the least. See, I noted here that you didn't request that the Racists in this forum go elsewhere in order to promoite rational discussion, just the anti-racists.

I addressed your points on other issues, but didn't get much response from you. Instead, you posted a request to eliminate dissenters from the "rationale" discussion, in your phrasing.

You remind me of this kid who would hit someone, then run away crying, "He/she hit me!"

"If people here are like me -- I call myself a 120-percenter. If I'm not doing any job at 120 percent, I think I'm failing. So if you're trying to do that at home and at work, you find it very difficult and stressful and frustrating."

This explains how Mister O-BOWma figured out that to fix a deficit we need to spend (just at the outset) $3.5 trillion dollars. If we have, lets say, a $1 trillion deficit and we throw $3.5 trillion at it, then effectively we've given 350%! That's almost as awesome as having "staff"!

"You're just wondering where are we going to put our children where we feel like that they're being safe, that they're safe and being loved. That will relieve many of the stresses that parents feel on the job throughout the day."

Well, as proposed by Mister O-BOWma, from age 0 to 5, these children will be "safe and being loved" in government-run O-BOWma Youth facilities where they will be taught to sing songs that praise O-BOWma, and to teach them how to become good little liberals and community organizers. The "safe and loved" children will be taught "Democrat Good. Republican Bad." Revisionist history will be presented each day, along the lines of "Barack O-BOWma is The Messiah", "Adolf Hitler was a Republican, and a member of the Bush family", and so forth.

God help us all, and may God save America before it is too late.

Blue Hour, it is your hatred that is repetitive. I sent that post yesterday and you know it. Somehow, by the marvels of technology it was posted again. If I knew how to do that i would gladly admit it. But again blame me since someone called Obama a name on this site.

You have dozens of posts here and not one fact. Lot's of name calling and a little " hope it works", but no facts.

Here, I will replicate all your posts, like I did the other, and resend them all. Oops, I do not know how to do that. But if I ever figure it out I will send them to you on the Huff post. You will like that.

Blue Hour, Olham is waking up now, go talk to him. I have better things to do than be called names by you. I have a family to spend the day with.

God Bless and hope you can find some time to Love not hate today. I am off to a family day.

I agree with elpolacko, yet another push by the liberal media to brainwash us into believing that Michelle "I've never been proud of my country" Obama is beautiful, fashionable and a great role-model.

She has not done ANYTHING to make her a role-model to anyone except wives of politicians who ride their coattails. For twenty years, she took her children to sit and listen to a racist, anti-Semitic, anti-American named Rev Wright. She has the audacity to disparage Sarah Palin's GOP-purchased clothing, insisting that she would never do such a thing -- that she only shops at the Gap -- then is photographed at a soup kitchen wearing $500 tennis shoes.

She is an odious human being who, I believe, hates America and by extension, white people. Her unattractiveness only becomes more pronounced as you realize what a hateful, ugly person she is on the inside.

BLUE HOUR,

I give you detailed facts about economics and more and Obama's KNOWN actions and for this you call others childish names. You start your first post hours ago based upon attacking others for something someone else posted.

After I and others detail facts, history, econ 101 the best response you have is to call me a racist for some post that some other people have posted on this site.

You need to learn the definition now of multiple words. Look up racism, deficit and now slander and libel.

Your justification for callng me some childish name, is tantamount to the following hypothetical;

Your neighbor and his friend told someone else that they thought your other neighbor was fat. Therefore you called your neighbor fat?

This is more irrational then the rest of your posts combined. But then again your buddy Olhham calls everyone NUTS that goes on some website that he also goes on. But then again you must believe that Obama spent 20 years in Wrights church, but never heard anything? Bowing to a King is a handshake? Ayers is some guy in the neighborhood, maybe Ayers called Michelle a name?

We can disagree but I have been all about facts, while you have been all about fellings and names. So if it makes you FEEL GOOD go ahead and call everyone a racist and OLhham can call everyone nuts.

I know someone called someone said something to someone that they thought someone else had called them, so therefore you can slander me since his first name has the letter D in it, like mine. We know blame it on Bush!

We got it, wink wink, moveone.org needs you Blue hour.

You're repeating yourself Dennis (instead of actually addressing any of the points and questions directed to you.) Convenient. A rational discussion for you is evidently full of racist garbage but without dissent or facts from those who differ with you. Is this the "freedom" you support? Will cookies and punch be served afterwards?

Posted by: bluehour | May 9, 2009 7:44 AM

odhham have a discussion with Blue Hour, you can call each other nuts and racists and have a merry old time.

Then leave the rest of us to rationale discussions.

So now simply by reading Drudge you are nuts? You and Old Blue Hour have a lot in common, have at it, but do it on Huff, or move on, those real rational websites.

Good grief. Does Godwin's law cover Music Man references? Harold Hill indeed. Sounds more like the Bush-Cheney administration.

1) Michelle has had a great deal of "reconstructive" work done on her face. (Look at the youngest daughter to get a glimpse of MO's original face.)

2) Much plastic surgery is done from inside the mouth (especially with the rate of keloids that blacks suffer). She "talks funny" (and seems to "chew" her words) because of the scars in her mouth.

3) MO believes that her talents are so incredible that she can problem solve with no effort other than her incredible mind. MO uses the Harold Hill "think system" (also used by Hillary Clinton) which means that if she chooses to give up her valuable "rock star" time and apply her incredible Stephen Hawking brain, she can change the world just by thinking.

So, when MO is having her nails done (by happy slaves who are grateful to be allowed to touch the dusky royal digits) all she has to do is think about "child care" and she is credited with "caring about child care" so she deserves a "child care caring award" which various groups will be happy to give her! [Notice how liberals don't have to actually DO anything to get awards; the Harold Hill/Hillary Clinton "think system" is alive and well in the Leftist Beltway.]

good grief ! ANOTHER article trying to convince us that this woman is intelligent?/beautiful?/fashionable? when nothing could be further from the truth. i've seen a lot of first ladies come and go but this one is the most classless and clueless, by far. hopefully, one of her many aides and assistants will inform her that it is impossible to have more than 100 percent of anything... ugh. someone paid this woman 300k a year for her 'expertise'? it's pretty obvious that her salary was just a political pay-off. she's no role model, she's an embarrassment.

Posted by: elpolacko | May 9, 2009 2:57 AM

We could discuss this too, BTW:

Bytheway says, "Trying to balance career and family reflects either an inability or an unwillingness to prioritize the things that matter most in life."

Unclear. Are you saying that Men have an inability to prioritize the things that matter most in life?

Posted by: bluehour | May 9, 2009 2:52 AM

Bytheway, hey hey hey, no judgment in brainstorming, Bud!

You could discuss ideas by talking more about the points you listed.

Peak Oil: Why don't you believe in it?

Accelerated climactic change: Tell me what you believe in, and we can take it from there. Global warming seems a misnomer to me, as it could lead to massive cooling. It seems like speeded up change is more accurate, and would be the inevitable result of putting more carbon dioxide and toxic substances into the air and water, changing the chemical composition and altering the temperature of the water.

Centralized government: This phrase covers a lot of territory. Can you be more specific about what sort of government you think I believe in, and what sort you believe in? It's kinda pie in the sky in any event. In the real world, we all have to compromise. Negotiate. Give something up to get something that is more important to us.

Posted by: bluehour | May 9, 2009 2:25 AM

Stupid bitc*. Just like her hubby.

Posted by: termlimits | May 9, 2009 1:59 AM

bluehour, how could I discuss new ideas with someone who believes in peak oil and something called "accelerated climactic change"? Besides, what's new about the tyranny of centralized government?

Posted by: Bytheway | May 9, 2009 1:55 AM

Dennis, you are too funny. You want to have a rational discussion with the anti-Obama folks? And is this only possible in your view if the people who disagree with you leave? And didn't you accuse me of something similar in a previous post? Yet, I haven't called for you people to leave, (just to smarten up some).

You consider remarks like "Ape-D" and "chimpanzee," "King Kong's sister," "one complexion's vote," and so on to be a reasonable discussion? If name-calling is identifying slurs like that as ignorant and racist, then I guess I am name-calling after all.

(Hmm, you have any any sense of irony there, Dennis?

Posted by: bluehour | May 9, 2009 1:33 AM

I think you're projecting your stuff on me and ignoring all facts presented to you, not to mention putting words in my mouth. I didn't mention homophobes, (but if the shoes fits...) or say some of the other stuff attributed to me.

I have hope, not blind faith. This is why I used the word "hope," and I explained thisd to you in a previous post after you took issue with the word "hope!" Of course, my hope is based on my analysis of the current situation and the people on the team to try to fix it. Economists disagree about the benefits of stimulus as you should know, and about where to stimulate. Stockwell thought money at the top would eventually trickle down to the rest of us slobs, though historically, rich people seem to sit on their money during tough times, not spend it like they normally do. Galbraith, IIRC, believes it is more effective to give money back to the poor and working/middle classes, as they have no choice but to spend it and put it back into the economy. Economists and historians are also divided on the benefits of the new deal, but one thing is for sure, it got a lot of people back to work and restored a lot of confidence. Mucvh better than just letting them be homeless, jobless and unfed.

Backwater and racist describe a state of mind. These days, I doubt there are many racists left in the real backwaters.

Yes, I think the racist crap in this forum is ignorant and, well, RACIST!

Ayers, btw, is now a mild mannered guy who works on children's issues, and it was in this context Obama worked with him, on child safety. As for Jeremiah Wright, I'm not a fan of his, but whatever he said comes from him, not from Obama, and is likely taken out of context. And seriously, do you believe Obama and Farrakhan are on the same page? One of Obama's strengths, though is working with diverse people, even some with certain extreme views and bringing them all towards the center. Anything racist Wright may have said is Wright's opinion. Obama gets blamed for things someone like Wright says? Wow, You are really grasping at straws.

You want to judge people by the people they know? (I am assuming this rule applies to all people, not just black people.) The Bushes routinely hung out with the Bin Ladens when visiting Saudi Arabia, a country with institutionalized sexism and antisemitism. Does that make them antisemitic? Or terrorists? George W.'s grandfather hung around with Nazis (and made a lot of money with them) -- in other words, true villains, not mere ciphers and cartoons like Farrakhan and Wright.

Blue Hour

You showed your true colors.
You can not engage in rationale dialogue so you call me a name. You actually hate someone purely because they disagree with you? Talk about bigotry and blind hate? You can not engage in a rational discussion, so you result to the childish name calling. Ooh your a racist, homophobe, neocon, backwater. Please grow up!

By the way I am a minority from Detroit, but you call me a backwater racist? All because I have the audacity to call a man that goes to a Black Liberation church for 20+ years a racist? He goes to a church that gives awards to Farrakhan ( calling Judaism a gutter reliogion) and I call him Anti semitic. His mentor calls Aids a govt action and that America's deserved 9-11 (chickens coming home to roost) He hangs out with Terrorists Ayers and Rashidi and I call him anti american. What part of the facts do you not understand? If I spent 20 minutes, which I would never do,with such people, what names would you deservedly call me, based upon my actions?

For that the best you got is to call me a racist? Please, that is so lame.
You criticize everyone, who disagress with you then faced with facts you lash out with your tantrum of name calling. Please third grade is behind you.

If you can not " predict" the future, from the past than you have based your opinion on total blind fantasy, or you have zero education and less common sense. Govt Schools will do that to you, but Obama and Clinton's kids can go to private schools.

History and precedent tells us this spending bailouts and earmarks and rationed health care has never worked, yet you have some blind faith in this inexperienced, Jeremiah Wright. William Ayers, Prodigal.

Blue Hour, plain and simple you can not spend your way out of debt. Try it and then call us from bankruptcy court or jail.

When you print money to cover the debt it is hyper inflation, tax less revenue goes up. Tax more the reverse, very simple.
Obama puts us into a 10 trillion deficit and you defend it on bailouts? Doing great for Chrysler, and GM.

Please stop all the name calling, you sound ridiculous. By the way, Obama is employed by us, those so called slave employees are employed by us, not Obama.

These nuts got to the article from a link on the Drudge website which then took them to the Washington Post. My basic question is this though, with all the time that these crazed wingnuts spend obssessing about the Obamas, would it better spending that time putting together a Republican agenda that appeals to more than semi-literate dimwits and people who routinely marry their cousins??!!!

America ... what were you people thinking when you voted for that African?

Posted by: casteaway | May 8, 2009 11:50 PM

Dennis, I can't predict the economic future, so "hopefully," is a modifier, since so much of the economy hinges on the public state of mind. Obama has good people on his team and a very clear and sensible vision, however, so I have great hopes. The debt has increased largely because of the bailouts of companies that went bad during the Bush administration, even if the news broke after the election in some cases.

I love how racists respond with "racist" whenever anyone calls them on their ignorant, yes, ignorant and backwater, yes, backwater, remarks. I say that as someone who comes from a backwater. And as for green energy and "global warming," I prefer to think of it as accelerated climactic change, since it ain't all about heat. But weaning ourselves off fossil fuels is about more than preventing future pollution. It's also about energy independence, not being beholden to dictatorships floating on seas of petroleum. It can also bring about personal energy independece for many people as new solar products like microthin solar cells can mean families in sunny places won't have to pay power bills after they pay for their solar set up. In fact, it would be possible to generate excess energy and sell that back to the utility company, depending where you are. Even if you are against macro and micro energy independence, you do know that the oil will run out in the near future and we will need credible alternatives.

To you dubiousbrother -- seriously? You think employeed staff are the equivalent of slaves? Get a grip. Mrs. Obama isn't accustomed to having household staff, and she graciously gave them their credit due. And this has incited the blizzard of racist right wing crap we read in this forum.

Maggie May, my 9 year old niece could write better posts than yours so really, are you qualified to judge MO?

You guys got any new ideas? Or just the same old failed nonsense we're digging out of now? Any new ideas to contribute to the great public debate? Or just racist remarks and schoolgirl quality digs at Michelle Obama's looks? (No offense to most schoolgirls, who would be above the stuff in this forum.)

I saw her in person at a rally at UCLA one year ago...SHE WAS A DISASTER! She looked like hell...couldn't tell her apart from her ACORN supporters! Maria Shriver was there and saved her from total destruction. She NEVER smiled...and made a remark I will never forget! She told the crowd in a very threatening manner that if they didn't 'vote for her husband in Nov., they would never have another chance because 'they were never going to go through this (the campaign) again"!!!!

What a witch!!!!

She is VERY unimpressive!

He has a larger debt in 90 days that the combined Debt of George W our first to George W our last. that is the combined Debt. He quadrupled the Debt in 90 days.

Yet the best you can do is " hopefully" it will be better? Hope is not a strategy..

I deal in reality, not some green fantasy. Are we in Global Warming, Climate Change or Back to Global cooling? The dems have thwarted every president on energy alternatives from nuclear to Bush's Hydrogen cell. Gore and Kennedy Jr run from debate in their private jet.

You try and Blame Bush for the deficits.. Did you forget 9-11, Dodd, Maxine Waters, Barney Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

The Reagan model came from JFK, was re-implemented with Clinton kicking and screaming " the era of big Govt" is over. Yep wrongly, Bush and the GOP expanded govt. Supply side economics is never dead, but the worlds largest deficits sure make it harder. I want to be free from too much Govt, not for my grand kids to be strangled by it.

I do not want Obama "luring" my kid from an MBA? That is not his " pay grade" We are falling behind other countries because of a failed Govt Run Education. If Private school is good enough for Obama and Clinton, why not you and I.

I do not want Obama controlling, schools, health care, my cars, my house, nor my family? He spends 23 years in a racist anti semitic, anti american church, while befriending Terrorists, like Ayers and Rashidi, yet you want to put your BLIND HOPE IN HIM?

Your backwater comment was ignorant, bigoted and probably racist. You have the audacity to support Obama and his racist, anti semitic(Farrakhan getting an award from Rev Wrights church) arrogant bigotry and then criticize others? Typical White person, hiding behind religion?

Chicago Tribune biographical profile relates that in summer 1991 a "young Sidley Austin attorney named Michelle Robinson" interviewed with Valerie Jarrett, who was then Mayor Richard Daley's deputy chief of staff. Reporters Christi Parsons, Bruce Japsen and Bob Secter reported that, before accepting the subsequent job offer, Michelle Robinson said that first "her fiancé," Barack Obama, "the independent-minded community activist [who] had privately expressed his political ambitions", wanted to meet with Jarrett.

What followed was a Chicago dinner meetup by Jarrett, Robinson and Obama:

This job would put his wife-to-be squarely in the offices of the man whose father had perfected the Democratic machine.

"My fiancé wants to know who is going to be looking out for me and making sure that I thrive," Jarrett recalled Robinson telling her. ...

At the end of the evening, Jarrett turned to Barack and asked, "Well, did I pass the test?" Obama smiled, put his head down, closed his eyes and said, "Yeah, you passed the test.

That was the start of a long relationship that has paid off politically for Barack Obama, connecting him to Daley's inner circle.

"After leaving City Hall, Jarrett went on to lead the Chicago Transit Authority. She recruited Michelle Obama to the transit agency's citizen advisory committee.

City Hall records show Michelle Obama, then still named Robinson, began work as a $60,000-a-year mayoral assistant in September of 1991. She didn't stay long in the mayor's office. Within weeks, Daley promoted Jarrett to run the new Department of Planning and Development. Michelle followed.

Jarrett now sits on several boards. Interestingly, she is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Chicago Medical Center, where Michelle has her $360,000-year "outreach" job.

Jarrett has served as treasurer of Barack Obama's leadership political action committee (PAC), the Hopefund and is now one of his closest advisers.

You can take the career politician out of Chicago, but you can't take the Chicago out of the career politician. Has the press ever been so hypnotized (or inept) to have missed the opportunity to legitimately burn such corrupt, elitist politicians at the editorial stake? Judging by our political "journalists" we're well along the road of taking Chavez' advice and embracing socialist fascism.

Posted by: shootndribble | May 8, 2009 9:50 PM

Michelle Obama's father was a volunteer organizer for the city's Democratic Party, a by-word for machine politics in America, and his loyalty was rewarded with a well-paid engineering job at Chicago's water plant. Even before overtime, he earned $42,686 inthe 70's -- 25% more than High School teachers at the time.

Posted by: spike2112 | May 8, 2009 9:44 PM

Hello everyone.

I have noticed that people who claim to give greater than 100% are usually right, if they do the math this way:

Let's use Mrs. Obama as an example. 120/5 (assuming five work days) = 24. So, when she says she gives 120 percent, it amounts to 24% per workday. What she means is that she gives 120 percent a week.

Sounds about right. Especially when I consider the amount of thought she put into gift giving to heads of state.

If she is right and actually is capable of the impossible (which is putting more than 100% effort into anything), her inability to foresee a publicity problem with wearing $500.00+ sneakers to a food bank or saying that "everyone" needs a staff, her full potential, considering that she cranks that up to "120%", is incredibly lame.

I wish I could be a fan. Hearing her speak about her childhood and upbringing was inspiring. She sounded like another Conservative American. What happened to that Michelle? What wasn't there to be proud of regarding that? What happened to that America? All of this progressive agenda she finds herself betting the farm on is exactly what is destroying the Country in which she grew up so beautifully.

Progress is looking back to the communities and families of 3-4 decades ago and saying, where did the good times go? Good thing people worked so hard to "change" that America.

Now where to, superior 120% brainiacs?

My Dear Mrs. Barack Hussein Obama, enjoy your delusional life while you can. The 2012 year is just around the corner; your chief of staff and personal assistants will be memory and you will be out of White House spotlight - - oh my, my, how will you manage then???

Posted by: GC15 | May 8, 2009 9:20 PM

Dennis, you can blame Obama for some of the deficit if we still have one in 2012. But he inherited a huge deficit from Bush and Co. who borrowed so much money from, e.g., China to finance the Iraq war. Make sure your anger is properly directed please. Granted, a lot of money is going up top right now to banks and auto company CEOs because of their misadventures under deregulation, instead of going to targeted incentives like green energy/energy independence and education. Hopefully, that will soon be corrected. Reagnomics is dead folks. Time for a new animal suitable for the 21st century.

Both parents do not have to work, they chose to!!!

But the BMW, the Cell phone, plasma TV's the 300+k house, the 3 cars garage and the lottery tix and lattes cost a lot.

More importantly when she was a kid the tax rate was very low, now the tax rate is exponentially higher and as Bob Dole truthfully said, one spouse has to work for the tax bill, while the other works to support the family.

If she really cares, let us all take more not less money home and stop the deficit spending that her great great grandkids will have to pay back.

Her comments as her and her husband bankrupt this country is such a pack of garbage.

Dennis, anyone who isn't
an ignorant racist would be offended by criticism such as that from Joel, who calls the President a chimpanzee. It is upsetting on so many levels, and not least because this sort of backwater racism indicates an inability to have a reasoned discussion. Why don't we talk issues? How about the GOP and green energy, and how the previous four administrations set America back in developing alternative energy. Now we have to play catch up with China and Europe in most sectors. How about Obama's ideas on luring more kids away from MBAs and into engineering, mechanical trades, and high-tech education so America can not only keep up with Asia and Europe but once again lead?

Started you off. Okay, your turn.

Post-Id, ugly? UGLY? check out some of the comments I was responding to. The racism should turn your stomach. Those are the morons I refer to. Are they not ugly when they refer to the president as an "ape?" Please. Your biases are showing. Nice company you keep.

Posted by: bluehour | May 8, 2009 7:26 PM

Post-Id, evidently you are paying attention since you took time to respond, as have many others. Why are you posting? I care about America, that's why I'm posting. Like many in this world, I want a strong America, but not a stupid America (see Bush Cheney, 2000-2008). We've already had enough of that and the damage is long-lasting. Present some facts, some genuine ideas, not racist trash. speculation about the first ladies' work history or her need for athletic shoes or conjecture about whether or not she's "spoiled." I don't know if she's spoiled or not, but her heartfelt reactions to things demonstrate she is not.

You anti-Obama commenters, with a couple of exceptions who brought up real issues, sound like nasty schoolgirls gossipping in the ladies room. And racist schoolgirls at that. Not my America.

@ aldhatsathe:

Christians are Christians, they're not "true" or something else, no more than any Catholic is "ardent" like Nancy Pelosi claims she is in her witchy dark perspective.

Christians are not exempt from perceiving reality and making judgements about reality. I think that's more of the Islam thing to do, claim "those people" (in your case, you're referring to "true Christians") aren't "allowed to" exercise independent thought or express opinions accordingly.

Posted by: POST-ID | May 8, 2009 7:19 PM

No one who voted for President Bush, bluehour, ever referred or even considered him as "prince."

Posted by: POST-ID | May 8, 2009 7:15 PM

However, bluehour, you're proving just how insulting and tasteless the Michelle Obama Crowd is. Like her, you've managed to insult just about everyone else. Keep it up, it's proving how ugly is attracted to ugly (you, Michelle Obama).

Posted by: POST-ID | May 8, 2009 7:14 PM

bluehour, no one's paying too much attention to you, and I wonder why it is you're "working" so feverishly, anyway, to try to defend Michelle Obama. No one to very few respect the woman, nor her husband, despite the overheated internet-typers going nuts trying to maintain some "they're stars" personna for both.

Posted by: POST-ID | May 8, 2009 7:12 PM

Remember how, not so long ago, Michelle Obama sold herself as "shopping from J.Crew" for her clothing, then showed up a few days later wearing some designer (but quite hideous) Marxist-flag dress?

This is one harpy, who aims to get a lot of mileage out of her various claims to Being Special while being utterly vapid. Her one exceptional quality is that she is exceptionally crass.

Posted by: POST-ID | May 8, 2009 7:11 PM

Post-ID, your statements are conjecture when they are not outright BS. The fact that she is amazed by having household staff to help her demonstrates that she is far from spoiled, unlike certain ex-presidents and first ladies I could mention. What do you know about her work history, really, beyond the conjecture and rumor and flat-out invention you hear from Rush and Coulter? The President and his wife do not play a "victimization card!" Have you actually listened to them? They are not about being victims, they are about overcoming despite the obstacles (and you may recall that beebing black in America used to be a huge obstacle with many dimensions. That message has a lot more relevance than anything the little prince George W. Bush could muster.

Posted by: bluehour | May 8, 2009 7:10 PM

I don't follow (and thank God for that) how it is somehow some special dues owed them or anyone simply because their parents at some point in time worked to support themselves. Milking this whole "working class" thing is an ongoing attempt to claim some sort of victim status, as if working to support themselves was something that they suffered through, weren't supposed to do, was "beneath them" to do.

Posted by: POST-ID | May 8, 2009 7:05 PM

And Michelle Obama's claim that she pushes herself at some hyper-human capacity is also egomaniacally irrational, what with, say, her own statements laughing at how she gained admission to quality schools even with her paltry grades -- her laughter was/remains with the foolish schools admitting someone such as herself, the joke in her mind being on them.

Like I wrote already, her parents raised an exceptionally spoiled, egomaniacal (and quite crass) daughter. If Michelle Obama's mother had any maturity herself, she'd never have conceded to do the raising of Michelle Obama's children (the granddaughters), or, consented to enjoy Presidential perks on the public as she continues to do.

They defer to some 'working class' victimization assumption to then rationalize their own selfishness and spoiled, tasteless use of other people and impositions upon others, as if it's deserved them (because they somehow suffered their dues by working for a living as to her father).

I like that "I call myself a 120 percenter" BS. This worthless over educated seeker of entitlements worked at the hospital for $317K/yr., 20 hr./week to run "programs for community relations, neighborhood outreach, volunteer recruitment, staff diversity. Basically, they hired her because Hussen won a Senate seat and got the hospital a $1.1 million grant, and they turned a nice $800K profit.
Never worked a day in her life or produced anything, just a taker like Hussen the Community Organizer.

Not_an_Obot, they don't pretend to be blue collar NOW! Michelle grew up in a blue collar family however. Totally legit. She grew up black, and blue. Obama's grandmother, a major influence on him, worked as a secretary but became an executive through hard work. He didn't grow up poor and has never claimed to have grown up poor. Yes, these two understand main street America much better than Bush or McCain ever could or you do, evidently.

Posted by: bluehour | May 8, 2009 6:57 PM

Her "working class" parents, unfortunately, raised an exceptionally spoiled daughter who continues to be egomaniaclly out of touch with reality.

120%? This is a popular figure of speech! It is a metaphor for pushing yourself beyond your limits. When you feel you have nothing left, you grit up and find more to give. That's the American way. This is what I mean about people focussing on diddly, petty stuff and not seeing the big picture.

Boy, she and Obama really have suffered in life. Obama was forced to grow up in that urban deathmaze, Hawaii. Both shamefully were forced by circumstance to attend lowly schools like Princeton and Harvard. He's a multi-millionaire best selling author, and she "worked" a do-nothing $400,000/year job she miraculously got seconds after he was elected Senator. If there's anyone who can sympathize with the plight of the average American worker and lecture us from a moral pedestal about redistributing wealth, it's obviously them. The next time I'm not eating arugula or putting dijon mustard on my burger, I'll totally look to the Obamas for more inspiration about living the simple life.

Zippy, could not have said it better. In her little bubble of self-awareness and intimacy-driven self-disclosure, and in her never-ending efforts to let us know that she "gets it," Michelle Antoinette Obama has proven over and over how clueless she really is. Totally oblivious to how she is perceived. But she is accustomed to being around the glitterati in Chicago, not the regular folks in the hood. Look at the net worth of all the Obama pals from Chicago. They are not the blue collar masses she pretends to understand.

Gede fe59, you think maybe Bush-Cheney's tight connections to oil companies(and general energy concerns like Enron), combined with the Iraq war, maybe have a little more to do with the price of gas than our new president has? If you're so concerned about it, I hope you'll support the president's Green Energy initiatives.

Posted by: bluehour | May 8, 2009 6:21 PM

fe, really. Ape-D? Not just disgustingly racist, but juvenile and stuck in dusty old B&W America. And "Dear Leader?" This is how you see the duly-elected president? You give paranoid schizophrenia a whole new dimension there.

When the country, and the world, and the media finally wised up to Bush's many, er, limitations, I was anti-Bush too. In fact, I've been anti-Bush since shortly after 9/11, when I saw his administration cutting vet benefits while at the same time sending young, precious people off to die in their wars, then using 9/11 to justify and intractable war in Iraq. That was just the beginning of their shenanigans. While we were distracted by grief and horror, they were cynically using it to force through their pro-business, anti-people, oil-oil-oil agenda.

Iraq is a problem Obama inherited, and current exigencies will determine the withdrawal timetable. It is complicated by the problem created by this war in neighboring Iran, since the Iraq war has strengthened the Shia hardliners and hurt the reform movement in Iran. What a good idea that Iraq war was, eh? Moron.

Hey, axioma, wake up... wake up! It's 2009, Bud. George Wallace is dead. The democratic party has been a whole new animal for about 40 years. The GOP has changed too over the years. It used to be the party of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. Now it is known as the party of George W. Bush. Sad. Growing up, there were always lots of reasonable, moderate, thoughtful voices on both sides of the aisle. Now it's kind of out of balance, with so few thinkers on the GOP side, which has been held hostage by neocons and right wing religion for almost 30 years.

Ghoulish one, oversight of the industries that helped bring about this mess and are greedily gobbling up tax dollars is not communism. It's keeping an eye on rogues and ensuring banks spending our dime operate according to the rules from now on. Are you one of those people who wants oversight of welfare moms (a scapegoat if every there was one), but thinks these bailout recipients should remain unchecked?

You anti-Obama folks focus on petty, didly stuff like Michelle's sneakers while the rogues on wall Street take advantage of your distraction to pick your pockets again and again, to consolidate their power and systematically try to rob you of yours, all the while muttering cynical platitudes about free enterprise.

Now is a time for everyone to compromise a little so we can get done what needs to be done. Quit labelling everything arbitrarily and judge things and people not by emocrat, republican, but by the merit of their ideas. Obama's ideas are good and what is needed to keep American competitive and free in what is shaping up to be a very challenging century for the US.

Donna3 and shoegal refuse to argue in the context of the actual history of blacks in America. They do not know the history of their own people.

Donna3: Your threats are merely hatefilled revenge that cannot come to fruition. [Do the basic math!] In fact, HISPANICS ARE INCREASING, BUT BLACKS ARE DECREASING AS A PERCENTAGE OF AMERICAN POPULATION! The black dependence on government will NEVER be a match for the Hispanic will toward self-fulfillment, and love of family! [Incidentally, the word is RELEVANT. The opposite is not irrellevent; it’s irrelevant.]

Shoegal; DEMOCRATS formed the KKK and began segregation by code (law) IN RETALIATION FOR REPUBLICANS FREEING THE SLAVES! White Democrats stopped blacks from sharing drinking fountains, restaurants, hotels, or voting; they hired crooked white Democrat sheriffs who ignored black lynching but took fire hoses, baseball bats, and dogs to blacks! White Democrat legislators passed the segregation laws. White Democrats stopped blacks from voting by invoking literacy laws and enforcing poll taxes! It was the Republicans (again) in the mid-1960s, who passed civil rights laws to enable blacks to vote and to be allowed equal housing accommodation! DEMOCRATS VOTED AGAINST CIVIL RIGHTS FOR BLACKS!

Yet, Donna3 and shoegal still vote straight Democrat without caring that Democrats destroyed the black family, created black ghettos, continue to promise what they will never deliver (just to get the sheep black votes), went to war to keep slavery, and that DEMOCRATS WERE THE BUYERS OF THE ORIGINAL SLAVES who were sold by African Muslims (JUST LIKE OBAMA WHO SAID” MY MUSLIM FAITH”). Please, check out Obama’s daddy and slavery! And, find out why Condi Rice, Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas, Michael Steele are Republicans. You will find their reasons to be positive and glorious!

Posted by: Ghoulish_one | May 8, 2009 5:44 PM

"Normal people," Fishsnot? You mean white people, don't you? Because normal black people usually didn't have their own slaves.

The racism is just unbelievable in some of these comments. You do know its not 1950s gap-toothed, flat forehead KKK America anymore, right? It's the 21st century! Jeez.

This woman is not Marie Antoinette, morons. She didn't grow up with servants for Chrissake. So this evidently blows her away, as it would anyone who isn't accustomed to cooks, chauffeurs etc. These people belong to the White House. Every First family gets them. Most first ladies are already used to this sort of treatment and don't comment on it or givfe credit to the behind the scenes people who keep the White House running.

Reading these comments, I fear Obama is too smart for the room. Read the profile in last Sundays NYT magazine. Obama is brilliant and has vital vision of the future. Instead of (often racist) whining about the first lady or your paranoid assessment that they are "communists" (seriously, that's nuts), you might want to do something to help the country recover from the huge mess Obama inherited from those oil folk who demonstrated so much confidence, and so little intelligence during their two terms.

Despite her use of the common declaration that she is "giving 120%" (most often we hear it as 110%), the reality is that 100% is the maximum anyone can give.

Her belief that is giving more that 100% is merely a miscalculation of what her previous 100% was.

Pity

Spoke like the truly ignorant. Not being a fan of the current administration does not make one a racist - unless of course we all believe what comes from the mouths of those who love to play the race card. Fact of the matter is the amount of fiscal damage being committed now will be felt within the next 18-24 months when interest rates are through the roof and tax rates are following to pay for this absurdity. Hopefully all the liberals who believe they are the great thinkers of the world will pay attention and learn something this time around, although that isn't likely.

Posted by: rrfttoo | May 8, 2009 4:08 PM

I just think it's sad that the minority that take an interest in politics and goverment waste their time with this left vs right nonsense. You really should just watch wrestling; at least they have scantily clad women there.

Figure out what you believe and find someone to support for office that thinks the same way, or better yet do it yourself. If we would limit the power of the President to what is outlined in the Constitution, it wouldn't matter so much who was in charge.

Is it too early to drink? Have a great weekend all, and try to focus your anger on the people in power trying to take your liberty, not your fellow citizens with a different opinion on benign issues.

Is isn't right vs. left, it's the state vs us. Stitch this into your pillow and repeat daily.

I don't have much time, but the interstate is a good one to discuss. The government uses the "highway dollars" to impose its will on the states. Don't change your open container law, no money. Don't change your seatbelt law, no money. Don't do whatever we say, no money. I don't want to argue the merit of any of these laws specifically, the point is that it is the federal goverment bullying the states around with the highway money that is collected from OUR tax dollars. I don't know how much of my tax dollars are spent on roads, but I suspect a lot. I certainly don't tear them up as much as the trucking companies or any other heavy road users, so why should I pay for them. Make them all toll roads, those who use them pay for them.

Obviously, we are too far down this road, pun intended, to do such a thing, but it's a good way to the unintended consequences of unneccessary federal govement intervention. When Eisenhower started the interstate system, I doubt he intended it as a way for the federal goverment to take more control over the states. H

I just love this sort of story....it makes me feel so "close" to the bumbling fool who "represents" our country that I think I'll start referring the her AWKWARDNESS as "marie obama", in tribute to the haughty and STUPID French queen who arrogantly told the French people, "Let them eat cake!"

If one is a student of history, (which excludes the obamas) one remembers the fate of said French queen....her stupidity and that of her foul husband brought on the French Revolution....

Like both of the blathering obamas, I'll bet they weren't "aware" of any protests in their country either...just didn't take the time to see how angry all those "little people" were, I guess.

But, hell, we only need THEM when it comes time to vote and to pay for our "programs"...the rest of the time, we'll just give them our middle finger and tell them to suck it up!!!

A postscript to what I wrote earlier: "Socially, Mrs. Obama's mother did not burn her bra and take to the streets to protest being robbed of her personal identity by patriarchal institutions such as marriage & family."

I will speculate Michelle Obama's mother has no regrets about the choices and sacrifices she made for her family. It seems to me it is "grandma" who is the real American heroine and the person whose life and values we should hope more American women will emulate. With Mother's Day coming up this Sunday, Mrs. Robinson is worthy of national honor. Her daughter not so much.

Posted by: Bytheway | May 8, 2009 3:44 PM

I'm with you on the points mentioned, TPS, in principle. I'm not sure how the lack of government action would effect our day to day lives or our long term prosperity on either an individual or a national basis. I'm an a layman when it comes to formal economics. Perhaps it's some allowed bloodletting was/is the way to go. Can't argue with that view, I don't think.

But think about taking it further. I mean, how is the interstate highway system to run? Do you want to keep the FAA? FCC? or some version of those institutions? Abolish the IRS? Return to the gold standard? I'm not trying to mock, I'm just trying to get a feel for what a Libertarian's ideal America looks like and how it might actually function. And a more abstract question: Is it really less government, or just less concentrated government? I mean, governing's got to happen one way or another, right? If the idea is to simply localize it to the highest degree possible, than I'm with it.

By the way, I've got say, while I have some sympathy for those decrying the use of the "race card," when the president is referred to as an ape and the first lady as a "black witch" in the course of this discussion, those crying racism are proven right.

Read what Christopher Hitches said about Mrs. Zerobama's thesis: "I direct your attention to Mrs. Obama's 1985 thesis at Princeton University. Its title (rather limited in scope, given the author and the campus) is "Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community." To describe it as hard to read would be a mistake; the thesis cannot be "read" at all, in the strict sense of the verb. This is because it wasn't written in any known language.

Harpian,

For starters, I'd prefer it if the government didn't fire CEO's of companies and take ownership of others. I don't need the US Goverment involved with my car's warranty. The central goverment should limited to the powers outlined in the Constitution. A military is a must, but we certainly don't need bases all over the world. I agree with having a federal currency, but not one controlled by the Federal Reserve, but don't get me started on that. The rest should be up to the state and local governments. Government is a neccessary evil and should be kept as small as possible.

Reading these posts makes me embarrassed to be in your company. You can't write and you certainly can't think! The Obamas are changing the stale air in this country. Get on the train or get left behind. I'm a proud liberal-minded citizen who disowns the actions of the past administration and spent eight years reeling from moment to moment in disbelief. I was afraid we'd never recover, but the fog is lifting.

Doona3 is being disingenuous with her tables on teen births and incomes. The idea that these stae-wide averages have any relation to voter outcomes is one that leftists trot out frequently. I live in one of the higher teen birth/lower income states that voted for McCain/Palin. The reasons are 1.) the lower income breeding teenagers and their families have lower voter-participation rates and 2.) those of us who are earning and being responsible see the Obama/handout-seeking voters and reacted were disgusted. I still am disgusted. Donna3, look at distributions of income, etc. before trying to make a case for correlations.

You folks are trying to paint this daughter of working people as Marie Antoinette? Get serious! She didn't grow up with a silver spoon in her mouth and a team of loyal retainers to look after her like certain ex-presidents I could mention. She isn't pretending to be Superwoman, doing it all herself while the rest of us struggle. No, she points out her staff and gives them the credit due. That's rare these days. Good for her.

Posted by: bluehour | May 8, 2009 3:06 PM

More and more the First Lady seems to be channeling Eva Peron! Her husband is more and more appearing like just another smiling dictator. It is amazing to me how so-called "progressives" can admire these frauds as they cavort in luxury while stripping away our freedom!

Why doesn't she do something useful....have all of her staff look for "H"'s birth certificate. Surely with that many people looking, it is bound to turn up.

Wow, do you normally hyperventilate about insignificant things? What does Obama's church selection have to do with you? How does it effect you personally?

I guess you're secretly devoted to grasping at straws...admit it!!

Let's just make it official and slap a tiara on this woman's head. She think she's a queen, and we are her subjects. I'm surprised her shoulders weren't draped with a velvet mantle trimmed in ermine. The only good thing is that with every passing day, the Obama administration makes the Bush White House look positively professional. Please make him a one-term President. This is just awful.

Posted by: KPaints1 | May 8, 2009 3:01 PM

Donna, I don't mean to condescend, but thank you for making my point. I stumbled upon this collective tantrum through Drudge.

A further thought for the self proclaimed Libertarians among you. Can you explain a little bit about what you mean and what you stand for. "Small Government" is not a principle, it's a catch phrase that we've been sold. From which aspects of our lives would you like to exclude the federal government? And replace it with what? How do you govern a country of 300 million that spans an entire continent and has more power than any nation has ever had without a central authority? Currency, monetary and fiscal policy, national defense and security, taxation, the power grade, interstate trade and transit. Continue listing for yourself. If your idea of small government is to end entitlement programs and keep the governments "out" of bedrooms, gun cases, and markets, please think a little more about how complex our society has become and how you think it could be better managed. You want to tear it all down and start from scratch? I could be persuaded.

Also, arugula is a delicious and nutritious component of any diet. Affordable and easily cultivated, it makes a great addition to salads and sandwiches!

Posted by: Harpian | May 8, 2009 2:59 PM

For a person with an ivy league degree in sociology, Mrs. Obama should be in a better position than most people to explain the cultural and socio-economic conditions that enabled her father as well as mine and millions of other American fathers to support stay-at-home wives with multiple children on relatively small incomes up until the 1980s.

1.) Culturally, it was both acceptable and preferable for women to nurture and care for their individual families in the home. 2.) Economically(think prices and what the market will bear), markets were geared to one-income families. 3.) Socially, Mrs. Obama's mother did not burn her bra and take to the streets to protest being robbed of her personal identity by patriarchal institutions such as marriage & family.

It was the feminist movement with its communist agenda that created all the conditions Mrs. Obama now sees as personally stressful problems to be solved by government. When significant numbers of married women abandoned hearth & home in favor of a different career path and a pay check, the markets reacted by recognizing the two-income family who could easily afford to pay more for everything, especially homes and cars. This was actually the start of the housing bubble, and numerous other economic and materialistic trends can be traced to the origins of the two-income family for whom a home in the suburbs and a new pair of drapes were far more important than the quality of day care for their children.

Now that the price of everything is ten times higher than it used to be, and the 2-income family is not only the norm but a necessity for survival, the question should be how do we return to those simpler, less stressful times when men were men and women were dedicated, professional mothers like Michelle's mom & dad? If Columbine didn't shock us to our senses, will an economic depression restore our sense of priorities? Trying to balance career and family reflects either an inability or an unwillingness to priortize the things that matter most in life.

With Mrs. Obama as a role model, how many women now feel they need $450 tennis shoes instead of last year's Keds?

Posted by: Bytheway | May 8, 2009 2:58 PM

Yeah, Michelle, you are SO blue-collar, huh? Why, I'm sure you hug your guns like your husband says we do, right? Will that be in your next speech about working class America? Do me a favor and not talk about the challenges you have, because they don't have any relationship to reality.

Posted by: roccotool | May 8, 2009 2:57 PM

Wow Donna,

You pull out the RACE CARD, HATE CARD, AND THE GAY CARD. What other cards do you have up your sleeve? Btw your facts on teen birth rate don't take into consideration that most of it is in the inner city run by LIberals. Liberals have screwed with blacks and hispanics for too long.

Posted by: caseymiller32 | May 8, 2009 2:51 PM

Whooooteedoo....Being treated like a princess is kinda fun, huh? You love attention just like your "drippy" husband. He can't keep his ugly mug off the tv. I sure do a lot of channel changing these days. I refuse to watch him or listen to him. He is the most arrogant person alive. There are many of us out here that don't claim to have a president. He is just an irritant who thinks he can change the WORLD...you apparently both love attention..you won't get mine...

Posted by: houseoftigers | May 8, 2009 2:34 PM

This is really astounding, you guys. The baseless vitriolic nonsense that gets traded back and forth in a forum designed to facilitate discussion of the issues that matter most to our community. And all this in response to a fluff piece about the First Lady. Thank you to Tupac for pointing out the ridiculousness of this article in the first comment.
Why bother posting if there's not going to be any exchange of content or ideas? And, I think many of those commenting here are missing the big picture. Our current president is attempting to implement sweeping changes in the way we live in America. It's questionable whether or not he'll succeed, and even more so, whether or not his successes will actually benefit the nation as whole. There's certainly potential for disaster. But don't forget that this is following 8 years of croneyism, waste, and unabashed disrespect for the rule of law and the American people, which followed more of the same before that.
My point is, it's not about lefts and rights, or R's and D's. Please, get real. Professional politicians of any ilk do not have your best interests at heart, even though they may think they do. They are both products and perpetuators of a terminally ill system of government. That goes for the ruling elites of ALL of our institutions. Corporate. Educational. Scientific. Bureaucratic. Labor. If there's a versus to be applied anywhere here, it's between rulers and ruled, power and people. Division is their most powerful tool. Sure, squabble and insult one another on an internet message board. Constructive.

As an aside to whoever mentioned something about hard-working Americans, not weighing us down on the welfare rolls. Would those be the same Americans who sit in front of a computer and sling mud back and forth in the middle of the work day? American productivity to the rescue. Keep up the good work!

After reviewing a number of these posts, I'm having a little trouble connecting any of these to the story above. What is a pleasure to see is some discussion of "Libertarians".
I agree if you voted for Obama, you are the "Anti-Libertarian", but I believe if you fancy yourself a right wing extremist, you too, in my mind, do no justice to the cause of Libertarians. Although there is a wing of the Libertarian party that are anarchists, the basis of the agenda is to remove all but essential power from Washington and let the states decide. If it's gay marriage, so be it. If you don't like it, move to a state that has outlawed it. Looking for intellectual honesty here is pointless. Check out this site.

I have to get back to work now, to pay for Donna3 and shoegal_69's welfare and ill begotten mortgages.

If they try to post anything else that I didn't write, and attribute it to me by pasting my name to it like they keep on doing, I didn't write it. What I wrote, I wrote myself and my name stamp is posted at the bottom of my comments in grey by The Washington Post. You won't see any of what I really posted in the stuff they tried to pass off as mine. Liberals! They behave with the same decorum as little illegal children in a Kmart store.

"Everyone should have a chief of staff and a set of personal assistants,"

Even the chiefs-of-staff and the personal assistants? Sounds like the Hotch-Hotcher Bee Watcher in the Dr. Suess story.

Or maybe is Obama's plan to fight unemployment.

Dear Girly1, isn't it the truth! It isn't racism when it comes out of that ape's mouth though. It isn't America hating when it comes from someone so oppressed by society like they are, is it? They make me sick.

This is a woman who's salary went from just over $100k to about $300k as a hospital administrator AFTER her husband became a US Senator. Her position as "diversity coordinator" was apparently not important enough to be filled after she left for the White House. Are we supposed to believe that she's really so in touch with us regular people?

Posted by: rocco | May 8, 2009 1:59 PM

Why is it that the campaign kept this America-hating Black witch off the stage/cameras for most of the last half of his campaign? Answer: They were afraid she would lose the election for him!

I followed the campaign very closely on CSPAN for over a year...that woman was a miserable, angry, Black nationalist who hates America! She NEVER smiled unless she was in the company of 'her' people!

We have the ACORN nuts in the WH...the most dangerous regime EVER! I resent every second they spend in OUR WH while they frantically destroy OUR Constitution!

Not only do they hate 'whitey'....they hate America!

I'd help you to prostest your so called "global warming", but it's too darned cold out.

I have to go buy bullets now, If I can find any. There aren't any around, because nobody trusts this communist in office.

Maybe you can go have some of your gay sex now.

Tootles!

Blowbama now wants to cut all funding for the purpose of jailing any illegal.

The people keep speaking out, and calling Washington, and VOTING, and overwhelmingly, to the tune of 90% to 10%, DO NOT WANT ILLEAGLS HERE, and DO NOT WANT GAY "MARRIAGE". Our votes on the gay crap are ignored and overridden by judges that represent who??? And the illegals get right in your face when you tell them to at least speak English. They are loud and violent people. Their kids are like little animals, running free and yelling nonstop, wherever I go. It's like being in another world, with all of them taking over everything. We said get them out of here, and once again, we're told to stop being "racists" and support them so they can steal our lives that we worked for. They don't work cheaply either. It's time to take back our Government. The movement to do so is larger than most of these little, whiney Obamunists think it is. Round them up in the jails and then deport them, before we start to do it ourselves.

Posted by: louiseitis | May 8, 2009 1:41 PM

We're told repeatedly, every day in drippy, oozing media stories, how loved and perfect these communist radicals are, yet the majority of comments posted to the articles prove otherwise. Something is really off, don't you think? It isn't us!

There was an MSN poll for the first 100 days (his favorite news site, as a story this week told). You won't hear the results of this poll either. He failed 53.5%. He got 39.5% F, and 14% D, on a leftwing poll on his FAVORITE news medium!

The MSN Give Obama A Grade poll:
http://www.polls.newsvine.com/_question/2009/04/29/2748978-the-president-has-completed-100-days-in-office-based-on-his-performance-so-far-what-grade-would-you-give-him?GT1=43001

I'm proud that the squatter in the White House considers me an Enemy of the State, because I intend to help see him through prosecution for repeated and blatant disregard for The Constitution, The Bill of Rights, and the will of his bosses, US. So he's right, we're all against him and his anti American, communist policies, in the name of this country and all it was meant to stand for. Hey, doesn't that make HIM the Enemy of The State???

Wooooooo I'm a RACIST! And happy about it.

Yeah, I can read. I read your pathetic, whiny, hysterical, radical, racist, unhinged, budget proposal with no numbers, party loud and clear.

Posted by: shoegal_69 | May 8, 2009 1:35 PM

CHANGE...that's all we'll have left after the Obamas get through squeezing all the loot they can from our pockets.

And as for the personal assistants---- only the liberal social elitist will agree with her on that.

Posted by: libwithiq | May 8, 2009 1:35 PM

"As Ronald Reagan once said, "It isn't that liberals are ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't so."

Ummm, Reagan wasn't obsessed with gay marriage which put him at odds during that era with the same people you support today, who back then hated Reagan. Typical Republican, propping up Reagan up like a remake of "Weekend at Bernie's" yet you obviously don't know a lot about the man with the exception of copying and pasting random quotes...obviously don't have any 21st century ideas either.

Maybe if you spent a little time looking up the definition of the words you careless toss around instead of criticizing grammatically errors (while conveniently ignoring the errors of your ilk) your post would have some credibility. You're right, it doesn't take intelligence to follow what you're told. Someone obviously told you the latest Republican buzzwords. Save your breath on these sieves for brains and talk to the rest of us instead the 2 or 3 simpletons. We don't annoy one another with talking points or ideologies from Rules For Radicals. Plus we can spell.

What was I supposed to do, vote for a 70 year old partially senile man who seemed utterly clueless about how to address the economy and his hillybilly sidekick who was clueless about basically everything?!?!? Sorry, McCain 2.0 didn't earn my vote. It was too busy twisting himself in knots to make himself acceptable to extremist scumbags.

I'll bet you voted for McCain, just like the Drudge Report instructed you to do.

Maybe, Mr. Libertarian , your Republican party will help you out if there's a Schiavo situation in your family. We know how much they looovveeee personal freedom *snark*

"Everyone should have a chief of staff and a set of personal assistants". No kidding? I wish I had assistants along with a housekeeper, a gardener, a maintainance guy, a driver and a chef, but I don't. I WORK for a living, Michelle. But don't get me wrong. I am not angry about working. I love my career. I enjoyed the college I attended. The senior project I wrote was not about how angry I was about my country or how I believed I was owed something (like your senior project). When I joined the working world, I was optimistic and believed (as I still do) that I lived in the greatest country in the world. Unlike you, I love the USA--with all her faults. This one comment, along with her display of $550 tennis shoes last week, demonstrates the arrogance of Michelle Obama and her husband and shows just how out of touch they really are with mainstream America. And people called Hilary Clinton arrogant?

Posted by: capitolguy | May 8, 2009 1:01 PM

It just irks me that this woman talks about how working moms should have a chief of staff and personal assistants. She wouldn't know what it's like to live paycheck to paycheck. She bough her house in Chicago at a deep discount,($300,000less) from convicted felon Tony Rezko. If I were her, I'd be so embarrassed because her husband is ruining this country! His socialist agenda will take everyone's wealth away and only people like HER will only benefit.

How can you respect a woman who for the first time in her adult life was proud of her country only AFTER he won a primary?!It was taxpayer money that allowed HER to go to colege and law school!
How can she hold her head high when her husband has taken away school vouchers for 1,400 students in the D.C area who live in poverty and her kids go to private schools?
It was her husbands' party that didn't think there was a problem with Freddie and Fannie. Her husband was the 3rd highest paid in campaign contributions from Goldman Sachs, et al.

If I were her, I'd hire a teacher of economics and history to educate her. I'd also stop the the lavish parties and set an example that the rest of us are having to cut back like her husband has asked us to do! She makes me sick!

As a gesture of goodwill to the little people Mrs. Obama will now let go one assistant, therefore adding a .000000000001% saving to our new budget....

And for all of you complaining about those who can't make it because "they live beyond their means" you can join Mrs. Obama and try to remove your head from your a$$.

Most people I know forego luxuries, and occasionally necessities, with two working parents.

What the hell is "Corporate voices for working families" anyway? I don't think I want to know.

AllSeeingEye:
The working people live in PA,NY,NJ,Conn,Mass, RI,Ohio,Vir, Calif,Ill, Mich, Wis, Minn, Wash, Ore, No Car,Md, Fla,Iowa, and numerous other states and they voted for Obama. So that throws your remarks out the window. Ala,Louis,Miss,S Car, have the highest level of poverty and the lowest ranking in education. That answers the question of if I would prefer to be an educated employed democrat or a republican who would rather look at my under educated unhealthy, underfed child than use my own mind and not the spin of you conservativeswho tell them the house is not burning while they watch it go up in flames. The conservatives have been force feeding a lot of Bull to people while they really are laughing at their so-called base who actually believe that a republican has no belief in anything except money. Look at Mr.Conservative, himself, preaching morality to everyone when he is on his third wife after having affairs with 2 of them when he was married. You people are so Gullible!

Dear AllSeeingEye,
You can't talk sense into a liberal. They have no propensity for knowledge.

As Ronald Reagan once said, "It isn't that liberals are ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't so."

Save your breath on these sieves for brains and talk to the rest of us instead. We don't annoy one another with talking points or ideologies from Rules For Radicals. Plus we can spell.

Have a good day dear.

Posted by: louiseitis | May 8, 2009 12:59 PM

Her comments are only illustrative of a nation-wide delusion that a one income household in untenable. People, by and large, just don't want to make sacrifices in order to stay home with their children.

I am a teacher. I make about $35,000/year. My wife stays home (I would be happy to by the way). We rent a house, have tons of debt, and really live pretty comfortably, especially compared to those in Haiti. We are very happy, and I encourage more people to take the plunge, stay home, and do the most important job there is - unpaid with greenbacks though it might be.
We decided that no one else is going to raise our kids. Do you honestly think that daycare workers LOVE your children?

We are blinded by our own bloated material appetites.

Just imagine. If people decided to stay home, husband or wife, imagine how many jobs would open up, how many marriages would be saved, how much more realistic we would become as a country, how much happier our children would be...knowing that mom or dad will be there, always.

(disclaimer - obviously this sense of happiness does not apply to abusive, callous, or otherwise unfit, parents).

Posted by: snortsnoot1 | May 8, 2009 12:57 PM

Hahahahaha...Shoe_gal...so ridiculous!

You would be the only libertarian on the face of the planet who is for entitlement programs and welfare.

Please explain...and please stop with your DailyKos talking points...I don't listen to Rush or Hannity ro any of that stuff...I actually watch MSNBC more than anything because it's like the twilight zone. If you voted for Obama...you are a disgrace to libertarians everywhere and I'm alarmed that you can't see how oppressive the left has really become. THEY DESIRE A NANNY STATE...DO YOU REALLY NOT KNOW WHAT IS IN YOUR BEST SELF-INTEREST...YOU NEED MOMMY AND DADDY TO HELP YOU?!?!?!

Posted by: AllSeeingEye | May 8, 2009 12:49 PM

Dean37: Her comments aren't taken out of context. The Blowbamas speak with forked tongues. We just happen to understand the other side of what they say, that people like you refuse to acknowledge. That's why most of the comments on any Obama article do not agree with your point of view. If you look closer, you will see that they also have cloven hoofs and horns. Just when you thought nobody could top the Clintons and their bloated, self appointed elitist lies, huh!

Posted by: louiseitis | May 8, 2009 12:49 PM

Posted by: srcamachonj | May 8, 2009 12:47 PM

The reason you need to have both parents working, is to pay the extra taxes on everything we buy, and federal and local taxes as well, and they are now going to go for government run day care, and longer school years so they can keep your kids away from you longer, and train them to be good little citizen's, while taking away more and more time from the tax paying milk cows

You could give a pig a chief of staff and a set of personal assistants, but it would still be a pig.

Posted by: davidt36 | May 8, 2009 12:44 PM

It's crazy how her point of view is that EVERYONE is entitled to personal chefs and assistants, blah blah blah....But the magic question is: Who is going to take all the personal chef and assistant jobs?? Will they hire assistants? Aren't they entitled?? The answer is, there is always a totem pole heirarchy and somebody has to be at the bottom doing these jobs. Not everyone can be entitled to everything via tax dollars!!! It has to be earned, but I guess Michelle wouldn't know very much about that!

But I can only assume that you're opposed to such a concept....of course you are, by your comments you appear to be the type that just loves slobber waxing Rush's elephantine azz and patiently wait for him to shove the next buzzword down your throat which you'll regurgitating just like a good little lackey.

Definition of hatred for a liberal = Anything that is said that a liberal doesn't agree with or anything said that doesn't praise Barack Obama.

Definition of discussing issues intelligently for a liberal without resorting to namecalling and personal attacks = Cue crickets chirping

Why are her comments taken out of context? It seems to me like she was thankful for her situation. And it would be great if everyone had assistance if they needed it. The First Lady had $400K job as a lawyer and she did NOTHING for it - yeah, I'd LOVE to see the proof of that. So, why is it disingenuous to make money like that and yet want to advocate for those who aren't? Why does everyone claim that The First Lady are incapable of empathy? I see NO validation for that statement. Why can't we just be happy and thankful for what you have rather than upset that someone else has something more? I don't have any of the things she stated, but it would be great if I had them. And I am a average American. Wait - can anyone describe an average American? What do they do? What do they look like? What do they have? We can't generalize ourselves like that.

And Donna...I forgot to mention this, but if you weren't aware, the Democrats voting base is loaded with goverment dependents...not Republicans...ya see, most people who are for lower taxes and smaller government are conservative...the people who work for a living...that is a fact...the democrats are helping to put minorities under a new form of slavery...it's called building the proletariat. The more people you get on the government payroll...the more influence they have in our indivdual lives...can't you understand how this is bad for us all? Jesus, it's not that hard...why would anyone want the government to be so powerful?

More propaganda from the Obama media.

How many voters knew that the Obamas had a personal chef for years and Michelle had a 400K a year job for which she did NOTHING plus 80K a year on a Walmart-related board which never help a meeting or conference she attended? It would have put a lie about fable about the the wonderful "community organizers" toiling for the downtrodden, huh!

Great propaganda job, MSM!!!!

With our country hanging on a thread, we are given GARBAGE like this. Where is the leadership? where are our values? we indeed should be praying to our GOD, like GEORGE WASHINGTON did for all the help we can get.

Posted by: kefdluv | May 8, 2009 12:25 PM

We are in this grueling recession with people losing jobs or having their pay and benifits cut and wondering how they will make ends meet. Michelle Obama's quote, I have a chief of staff and a personal assistant, and everyone needs that. Everyone should have a chief of staff and a set of personal assistants," should rank historically with Marie Antionette's quote, "if the peasants don't have bread to eat, let them eat cake." The parallels are there for history to see. Both women are wives of elistist rulers who have no concern for the working class and who continually look for new ways to extend and abuse their power. Now, I'm sure the Obama apologists will say that Michelle was just joking. Some joke! Marie Antionette was probably joking as well, but it's the breathtaking insensitivity of her words that made history!

Here's an idea the Obamas will love. Start a new government social program to provide every family with a chief of staff and a personal assistant. That way they can sink us even deeper into their black hole of taxpayer debt and increase their fascist control over us all. Maybe then the American working class will finally wake up like the French did, and depose American's version of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antionette!

Who is Regon? Is he related to Egon from the Ghostbusters? Listen...please provide me a link of your disinformation so I can read it myself...last I heard, the most liberal state in the union, California, was going bankrupt and don't tell me "Ahnold is a conservative" because he isn't, he just has an R by his name...his policies are collectivist at best. Also, look at the major cities with spikes in crime, unemployment and taxes...cities like Detroit, Cleveland, Philadelphia, etc. ALL GOVERNED BY LIBERALS...collectivism has never and will never work...why don't you go read up about how excited the Bolsheviks were in 1917 for the HOPE and CHANGE that their beloved and self-proclaimed "community organizer" Vladamir Lenin brought with him in the revolution. Eventually, Stalin murdered or starved over 20 million of his own people because of this sweeping change. Because of people like you and your mind-less support of your Mommy and Daddy in DC, history will be doomed to repeat itself...whether you're first or last...everyone gets eaten eventually in a communist state.

It isn't right vs left, it's the state vs us.

There are only a small percentage of people who actually follow politics, and those that do get caught up in the professional wrestling-esque battle between conservative and liberal. Bush took away our freedoms, Obama is continuing it. Want to see a true bipartisan effort? Watch them squash any 3rd party candidate.

Stop all of this fighting over silly BS, and start fighting back over the goverment, regardless of the party in control, taking away our liberty.

I could careless about you being offended. GOOD! I have no sympathy for people who justify their bigotry.

And of course there's no comparison between deportation or marriage. I'm just showing you that your "conservative" thinking sets a terrible precedence. It's like comparing water-boarding to sawing someone's head off...you have no logical thought pattern...you can't compare apples and oranges. Are you seriously trying to argue that getting married and keeping your citizenship are even remotely in the same category. I do have facts to back it up, There are more children born out of wedlock in the red states and the northern industrial states get about 75cents back for every dollar paid in taxes while the red states get about $1.25 paid back for every dollar, so it looks like we in the northeast are paying welfare for the red states. And if the economy is in shambles don't blame a apresident who has been in office 4 months for that. This is all the results of Regonomics or as H.W. Bush called it"Voo-doo economics" and deregulation. The rich got richer and more corrupt and greedy and the only thing that trickled down on the middle class was the fact that we are now worse off then we ever were. The first generation when our children will not be better off then their parents. Thank Regan for that.

I love how all of a sudden I'm a liberal. People like you live under labels and titles huh? Homos, liberals, blah blah blah.

Prop 8 PASSED in November of last year. A quick Wiki search can confirm that. And the will of the people decided to segregate blacks 50 years ago, should that not have been overturned too? According to your logic, that's exactly what you're stating. What if the majority of the country decided that anyone of Middle Eastern heritage be deported because of racist sentiment for those in the region? Would you be okay with the majority's view point? That's a terrible precedence to set...and one that could bite you in the azz too.

And sweetie, you don't speak for the younger generation just because you and your homies don't want gays to get married. Just like I don't speak for the entire black population.

And since you want to throw around labels, you Bush leg humping apologist need to follow your drug addicted talk show leader off the political cliff. The rest of us have work to do, undoing your party F ups.

Allseeingeye,

You understand what is going on. There is a double standard to what you can and cannot say in public depending on your opinion. I myself will speak as if there is no double standard. Also, there is no comparison with the civil rights of blacks and those of gays. We also don't need to differentiate between race because the only difference is the color of skin while we differentiate between sex everyday because there are differences between the sexes. The real discrimination i see especially by the media is the black conservative.

Posted by: caseymiller32 | May 8, 2009 11:43 AM

I find it OFFENSIVE that people who have historically given practically NOTHING to charity personally, even when they were making six figures, are so adamant about spending other people's money.

The Obamas are not charitable. Their tax records prove that. Spending other people's income is not good-will. It's government abuse of power.

Private charity by choice is GOOD. Forced government redistribution of income is UNCONSTITUTIONAL, ineffective, and wasteful.

Again, you are wrong.

THEY ALREADY VOTED ON PROP 8...IT FAILED! So any legislature that is overturning the prior ruling is doing so, IN SPITE of the will of the majority.

And I'm not even black...I'm of Middle Eastern descent...and I've faced all types of persecution, so I'm not going to here the sob stories from anyone...it's amazing how entrenched liberals have become in that you are willing to take position of ANY MINORITY that is also a liberal...even if it means throwing another minority (with conservative values mind you) under the bus. This just shows that the liberal agenda is superior to any other cultural or religious ties. It is a religion...with a cult following of "HOPE and CHANGE" lemmings. You are one of them.

And your claim that "the younger generation will shake their heads at my words", I'm 24, college educated and employed...I have a lot of friends, colleagues and associates who feel like I do...almost exclusively actually. Combine that with THE VOTING RECORD on Prop 8 and you will see that I am in the majority (along with your savior President Obama). But that would involve looking at and excepting facts...I know that's way out of your league.

Not now, not every will I agree that we as a nation should be voting on the civil rights of others. There are no clauses in the Constitution. The Prop 8 vote showed a disgusting lack of understanding the history of this nation.

Name one other group of people besides gays that are currently fighting for their rights? Now name all the groups that overcame discrimination in the past? You get the point? Futhermore, the first time Prop 8 was place on the ballot was 2000 and it passed by 20%...last year the initiative only passed by 4%. Is it dawning on you now? You think gays are the minority? No honey, it's really those who subscribe to any form of bigotry that's becoming alienated.

Posted by: shoegal_69 | May 8, 2009 11:36 AM

Yup, we all need "personal assistants". Obama, you gonna' give us that too?

The one cogent observation that this arrogant lady made was that families "used" to be able to get by on "one income". Why is it more difficult today? Because the government steals more of the workers' money in higher and hidden taxes thereby making it more difficult for a one income family to thrive. Another important, but frequently overlooked rationale is that today people are more spoiled and demand a higher standard of living. Years ago, people made due without cars, electronic toys, frequent vacations and $540 a pair tennis shoes.

Actually, your post is exactly why the younger generations will shake their heads at the ridiculous whining about how your struggle was much harder than theirs. So f*ing what? When were you beaten or lynched? And perhaps you need to check out the scoreboard, the backlash is against those who think like you, not those who think like me. In case your head has been in the sand over the last few weeks, a few states are legalizing gay marriage.

And yes sweetie, I'm quite familiar with the Constitution, it's the foundation that overturned slavery and the reason you're not out back picking cotton. Civil rights, does that ring a bell? Or do black people hold the monopoly on such a concept? And quite frankly, people who pull excuses out of their collective azzez are the ones running out of logical reasons. So did the National Black Hate Gays Committee finally decide that "comparing struggles" is the new "logical" reason to vote for Prop 8?

And quite frankly, I'm not defending Perez Hilton, his question was tacky. But Miss America thinking is utterly flawed, simplistic, hypocritical, antiquated, and regressive.

If you think homosexuality is a sin, then don't be gay. But it's really time to get past this "they can't get married BS". Rather you think homosexuality is natural or not, it's been around way longer than you or I....and will continue regardless of how often the "excuses" change.

ME-chelle, ma belle, I will say the only words I know you'll understand:

“For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country." February 21, 2008. Then, two weeks after making her disdain for the nation clear during a campaign speech for her husband in Wisconsin, Michelle further debased America by saying that we're a country that is "just downright mean." No ME-chelle, you are just a downright mean, bitter, racist, internationalist, socialist.

"The truth is, in order to get things like universal health care and a revamped education system, then someone is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more." - Okie dokie ME-chelle, gimme my piece, and I want some of that Opra Winfry and George Soros pie and I want extra large slices topped with ice-cream. And tell Barry merci beaucoup for me.

“Barack is one of the smartest people you will ever encounter who will deign to enter this messy thing called politics.”

The definition of deign is:

condescend: do something that one considers to be below one’s dignity

Your comment about denying gays their civil right? Explain yourself? They put Prop 8 to a vote in the most liberal and backwards state in the union and guess what? It failed miserably, so the will of the majority prevailed, but it's because everyone is so bigoted right? Well sorry BABE, no civil rights have been denied...you are a tool for the machine. Did my babe comment OFFEND you as a woman? Well I just decided I like to have sex with men...so don't be a homophobe and object to me doing and saying whatever I please...sucker.

shoegal_69:

Your post is exactly why the backlash is going to happen! I have several gay friends and I even believe that people are born gay, so I'm not hiding my bigotry...because I don't have any. I, however, am a firm believer in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights...are you familiar with either? If I disagree with gay couples adopting, does that make me a homophobe? People who run out of logical arguments always turn to the personal attacks...and what better way to silence someone than to call them racist, a bigot, etc.? Take the example of Perez Hilton bashing Miss California. He asked her a question and when she gave her honest answer, (the same answer the President has given, odd huh?) WHICH SHE WAS PROMPTED FOR, he said she was a b*tch and a host of Prop 8 supporters have attacked her character and looks over and over in their smear campaign to "silence all dissent". Now I ask you, if I, as a heterosexual male, would have called a woman a "b*tch" or made fun of a woman's looks, would I not be labeled as a male-chauvenist or a womanizer? I absolutely would be. So basically, what this means is that now certain minorities have a 1st amendment right that supercedes that of the majority because of their sexual orientation. That is sickening no matter how you cut it...it's true and if you want to try to defend it, we can do this all day.

How is that these people don't understand that they work FOR US, not the other way around? Americans are too willing to admire and drool over those in Washington instead of holding them accountable to us! Since when did building $10,000 swing sets, partying all over the country, wearing $500 shoes, having a private make-up artist and supporting a mother-in-law become the taxpayers responsibility? Why do we tolerate this bs? Have we become total cowards and servants or what? All of these elected morons need to be put back in their place or your place will become theirs! Funny. I don;t see a single word or mention of Michelle's involvement as Executive Director of Public Allies that group Barack helped found in Chicago in 1992! Nor does the WaPo mention that among the "isms" taught there, is "heterosexism," which a Public Allies training seminar in Chicago describes as a negative byproduct of "capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy and male-dominated privilege." Remember when Michelle told women in an audience not to go into the "corporate America"? Instead go into the "community"? The WaPo can't keep covering up the complete radicalism and Marxist ideology of these two. Do the math, your profits are down in 2008 by 86% your readership is dropping like flies off the widows of locked up diner in 120 degree heat with no a/c!

I hope you're not suggesting that it's legitimate to vote against gay people's civil rights just because you're offended that they're making comparisons of their struggles to ours. I'm black AND a woman, as a woman should I not be entitled to the same rights as men simply because I wasn't beaten or lynched simply for being a woman?

I've heard this silly (no comparison with our struggles) garbage time and again...and it's stupid. Excusing your bigotry under the guise of being offended is just as tacky as excusing bigotry based on religion.

You're right, you have the right to have an opinion about gays....but don't get offended when racial slurs are thrown at our president, they're simply stating their ignorant opinions too.

Posted by: shoegal_69 | May 8, 2009 10:55 AM

It's not that Michelle's dad earned enough to allow her mom to stay at home to raise their kids. It's that the family was not taxed into poverty like most families today. How much of your wages do you get to keep? The second parent needs to work to support the government, not the family. When are average Americans going to stand up to the government and say "We've had enough!" Oh yeah, we tried that with the Tea Parties and were ridiculed by the libs. Is that all we got? C'mon people - step up the effort! Vote all these clowns out of office. Do not elect elitists who steal from you and your family on a daily basis. Also, why doesn't the government go after all the welfare cheats and the millions of people working "under the table?" I see them every day. Too hard to go out and enforce the laws I guess. Easier to just raise taxes on the people they already have in the system. How many people do you know that take advantage of your hard work by cheating or doing nothing productive? this isn't right. It is time to form a viable third party. We can get enough disillusioned citizens from the two major parties to shrink their ranks to the point they don't matter. Who's with me on this? Enough talk. Let's do it!

The difference between her parents and parents of "today" are this: alot of times, parents of "today" don't want to live within their means. They have to have a big house, live in the right neighborhood, charge up tons of debt and have all sorts of luxuries like cell phones, cable, etc. Most people can still support their family, but do so would be to make unselfish decisions which they seem incapable of making.

No amount of makeover or softball marketing will disguise her true roots-racist and socialist. After receiving ill-gotten gains through political "games", she is continuing to feel increasingly entitled. Tell yourself the lies enough times and you start to believe them as fact.

Fortunately, we all haven't drunk the Kool-aid. Her dear Prince's approval ratings will continue to fall and she will with them.

Posted by: 2013Gman | May 8, 2009 10:30 AM

Also,

I completely disapprove of making racial slurs. First of all, it's just plain ignorant and secondly, it really makes everything else you say irrelevant. You could have the smartest post in forum history, but if you call our president a monkey, you lose validity in most people's eyes. As for gay jokes, that's a bit of a different story...I'm pretty fed up with the homosexual agenda. If I hear one more gay person compare their "struggle" to blacks in slavery, I'm going to lose my mind. Are other minorities offended by this? Again, what you do is none of my concern and I don't care, but don't expect the American people to swallow the pill of acceptance so easily...believe it or not, some people find homosexuality odd (and it isn't natural...at it's basic, primal level...sexually) and they have a RIGHT TO THINK AND FEEL HOW THEY WISH.

I agree. No one should call Aunt Esther a chimp. That was reserved for Bush 43.

But everyone forgets about that, don't they (or, they agree with it, so there is no reason for them to complain).

This woman was making nearly $400,000 a year (apparently, having your husband as a Senator opens up a lot of opportunities, especially new job opportunities). She really can not talk about the struggles that average families have to face.

Even with that $400K, plus her husband's salary, they still couldn't get their house without the help of the crook, Tony Rezko. But everyone forgets about that, too.

Show trials are a slippery slope and aren't exclusive to one party. That's a whole different story though. I do disagree with you in one area. You said our taxes were relatively low...income tax maybe...what about our ridiculous capital gains tax? I am not saying that we don't need some taxes, but not for earmarks or pet projects. The government should be responsible for keeping us safe and maintaining our infrastructure. I am even in favor of spending to improve the infrastructure, WHEN WE HAVE A BALANCED BUDGET INSTEAD OF MASSIVE DEBT. I don't know how any politician could justify a pet project or sending billions to other countries when we are at 8.9% unemployment. The founders warned against taking the fruits of one's labor and giving it to another, it destroys incentive and slowly creates a proletariat. Look at the back door nationalization of our banks and auto industry. I am absolutely skeptical about any politician, on the right or left, and I certainly don't want a bunch of out of touch DC elitists telling me how to run my personal life while also trying to shove a minority agenda (ie: gay marriage) down the throats of the public. I'm sick of it...the government should stay out of my business.

I love it, especially coming from the liberal rag Washington Post. Yes, we all need help, but most of us don't make 3 million a year and have books written about our dogs. Laura enjoyed the help as well, but at least she never lost her humility. Michele sounds like she feels entitled. I wonder why Obama leaves his brother living in a cardboard box and his aunt in public housing. Aren't we supposed to be helping our family at least? I thought the philosophy of self sufficience was a Republican policy.

"You're just wondering where are we going to put our children where we feel like that they're being safe, that they're safe and being loved."

How about at home with a Mother or Father? I don't care which one stays home, but if a couple decides to have children shouldn't at least ONE of them be willing to raise them??

Don't even start that "one salary doesn't cut it" stuff, either. It cuts it if each family member doesn't get every single whim and desire fulfilled. That means big vacations, cable TV, every video game on the market, princess costumes, weekly pedicures, etc. etc. etc.

It used to be that anyone - let alone a First Lady - would have been embarrassed to say something like that.

Wow, its so good to have positive, helpful, reports coming from our nations "home page", but wait...let's have a look at the comments on this article and see if my "good vibe" is shared by other readers of The Washington Post...

Whoa, "The stench of arrogance is nauseating. No doubt she is still not proud of this country and thinks it is down right mean.",and Tell the Ari to go back to Chicago. This chimp is a disgrace to this nation. Although Laura Bush will get no credit she was one of the most eloquent First Ladies ever",and this, They need to put old thunder thighs back in the zoo and leave here to her bananas. God is she ugly!".

I can't believe my eyes, such hatred, anger, poisonous thinking. Am I on the same page as my fellow readers? Is there any hope for healing if this story can be so completely manipulated by some twisted school of reasoning, obviously embraced by an un-healthy percentage of those who've read it and beyond that, find themselves moved to share this vitriol with others?

This hurts my heart.

AllSeeingEye,

On question of belief in Federal Government, do you prescribe to Private Military or private police force? Do you prescribe reducing taxes from 28 or 33% to 0% or 10% taxes on citizens and businesses after taking inflation and all other ever increasing expenses into account? Do you prescribe to private contractors building roads in rural Iowa, Utah or Nebraska? Do you believe in no service from Government. What is good tax rate for you? My wife owns a business, and I know how much taxes we pay every year. It is easy for me to get frustrated. I will be the last person on this earth who will be Marxist.

It is easy to blame Government for every woe, but without Goverment and some reasonable taxation, this country will turn into anarchy. This country has lowest tax rate in the world. So to what level, Republicans want to reduce taxes is an open question.

Also Mrs. Obama is not Government official, so criticising her for any stupid comment she makes is not a solution. Someone in this forum called our President a Negro. Now who is looking at color? Is this a civil dialogue coming from a party which have faith based followers? At least you can blame incivility of democrats as they are God hating atheists. In reality the blame goes to crazy people on both sides. I always respect Presidency of USA and believe that we have right to dissent in a civil manner, but calling him or George Bush names is not solution.

These statements would seem to be contradictory.

To add insult to injury, we have to pay for a staff and assistant for her MOTHER!

Never before in history have the occupants of the WH lavished themselves like the two Black occupants! NEVER! Their ostentatious lifestyle is costing taxpayers BILLIONS. They spent OVER $100M just on their European vacation!

For the first time in MY life...I am ASHAMED of the FLOTUS! She gives new meaning to the old bromide...casting pearls before swine!

Posted by: girly1 | May 8, 2009 9:49 AM

It would be nice that all of us should have a staff to help our households. However, the irony of this statement is that the President and Congress don't think the ones who have worked hard and can afford hired help (i.e.the "rich") should be allowed to. While I cannot afford such a luxury, but I do not envy them nor do I think I deserve to take their prosperity for myself or others.
Another irony in this article is how Mrs. Obama recalls how her hardworking father was able to provide for the family with a mother at home, doing so by living within their means. One of the many reasons many families need two incomes is the choices they make to live beyond their means and indulge in things. Things such as a huge house, cars, kids with the latest electronics, big vacations, etc.
Some families will never be able to survive without two incomes, no matter how below their means they live. However, alot more families could live on one income by planning and sacrifice. I gave up a great paying job to stay at home with my kids. I will never be able to return to the same level because of the years out of the work force. But I never regretted my decision. We have a modest home in a great school district that we bought based on one salary, don't take lavish vacations at every school break, budget our expenditures and stick to it, and make big purchases when we have cash, rather than credit. Its not luck, its hard work.
I wish Mrs. Obama would have emphasized more about how successful her parents were and that maybe more families or couples planning a family should take a look at their model of sacrifice and means of living.

Michelle stated: "You're just wondering where are we going to put our children where we feel like that they're being safe, that they're safe and being loved."

Excuse me, it is not possible to hire someone to LOVE your children. If you're not motivated by LOVE to care for your kids yourself, what makes you think anybody can be paid to love them?

There is only one caregiver who can provide safety and love at the same time - and that
is the child's parent.

My blood is boiling that our society now believes love can be bought and paid for. Our children are paying the price for this ridiculously self-serving attitude.

I fear for the generations that will grow up accepting paid day-care as "love".

Two income households exist because people choose status symbols over quality of life. Their parents had a big house and drove nice cars, so they should start from the very level that their parents spent 25 to 30 years to achieve. Operative word: spoiled. Key word: achievement.

And millions of single parent families? Excuse me? People have got to live with the consequences of their actions. Will their children suffer? You don't think growing up without a father is already suffering?

Are you sure that you were raised by working class folks? Maybe this is just the way that Ivy League graduates think. Or maybe it's all women.

"Everyone should have a chief of staff and personal assistants" - uh oh, I feel another entitlement program in the works. We all need those government benefits too - a justice thing - why should she get it and not us? Just put it on her husbands tab for all of us.

Posted by: evanpastor | May 8, 2009 9:21 AM

"Everyone should have a Chief of Staff, and a set of personal assistants.' Yeah. But what everybody REALLY SHOULD HAVE, is a pair of $500 SNEAKERS, when they go out to feed the poor. Wouldn't you agree?

Posted by: GoomyGommy | May 8, 2009 9:18 AM

Wow, lots of vial, accusing criticizers of this administration of being everything from bigoted to whiners.

Truth is in less than 120 days we have: more dept than all 43 previous administrations combined, KP abandoning it's agreements to reverse it's nuke and missile programs, worsening unemployment, massive inflationary pressure, an inability to raise interest rates to prevent inflation as that would collapse the worlds economies (again), an escalating problem between Iran and Israel, a president who is opposing Israel defending itself because it won't make nice with the terrorists next door, the stock market sliding backup up (you would think that was a good thing; but, the reasons for the rise are problematic), the government owning private businesses, the tax code getting more complicated, taxes slated to go up on everyone (after the 2010 elections - so they can keep enough seats to stay in power until 2012), cap N trade (not Capt'n Crunch) that will cost us all about 3k a piece per year based on non-science (even using the Green's numbers CO2 doesn't add up as a cause - we are now down to a .7°c climb over 100 year period, that started at the end of a cold snap), and more of the same say one thing the do another politics that we have all come to expect from our politicians, o ya almost forgot the universal health care plan that would (no-doubt) cost us all even more than Cap'n Trade. I don't know about you; but, I can't afford to loose over 6k a year to new programs that we don't need anyway. Anyone who needs and/or wants medical care in this country can get it. Costs can be payed over the course of years - after the fact. Insurance is not a necessity.

For the record, we taxpayers spend over $2 BILLION per year to run that White House. Perhaps Obama should show some fiscal leadership closer to home? How much was that Air Force One photo op again?

The stench of arrogance is nauseating. No doubt she is still not proud of this country and thinks it is down right mean.

Michelle Obama is a wonderful role model for African Americans and all women. With the support of her family and hard work, she was able to jump the hurdles which were certainly there, whether she talks about them or not.
It's too bad people have become so cynical and bad tempered that they have to level their frustration on a hard-working woman, Firt Lady or not.

I don't "hate" her. Do you think that Marie Antoinette (sp?) was jokng when she said "let them eat cake"? If its a joke, does that make it funny to the 8.9% of Americans looking for work?

Posted by: JakeD | May 8, 2009 9:09 AM

Michelle deserves a "chief of staff and personal assistants." She's "entitled." Thanks Abe, you emancipated this crap.

Posted by: newzaroo | May 8, 2009 9:07 AM

What is the White House marketing budget for selling Michelle Obama to the American people? Specifically, what money shows up on their balance sheet separate and apart from all the unpaid solicitation done on behalf of the media sycophants? I mean, HOLY MACKEREL! If it isn't her freaking scrawny arms it's her smile, her beauty or whatever!

Pumping the heck out of all these superficial intangibles is sure good for advertising filler especially if you're selling consumer goods to the dullard masses who yearn for such inconsequential puff.

Why do you blindly put so much faith in the federal government? Why do you assume that any politician cares for your well being? They don't, it's all about retension of power and forcing the people to depend on the government. Your post strikes me as odd because you seem so sure of yourself, yet you call the right ignorant and irrational. Have you lost your mind? The right at least uses some logic, albeit flawed at times, but the left makes decisions strictly based on feelings. You are what Lenin referred to as a "useful idiot". Did you get that mortgage paid off? How about free gas for your car? The difference between you and I is that you see the government as an agency that can take care of you, whereas I would like to think for myself and not have Big Brother always telling what I can and cannot do. And by the way, our economy in 2006 was doing pretty well...guess what happened? The tax and spend liberals took control of the house on the motto of "end this unnecessary war" (that we all voted for, but now have buyer's remorse) and yet we're still in Iraq and the POTUS sent additional troops to Afghanistan...is he a war criminal too? Should we have show trials and put Obama on the stand? How about Pelosi? Maybe Barney Frank for being the most corrupt Congressman maybe ever? But, no one will slap his hand because he's a homosexual and all he has to do is cry "homophobe".

Posted by: alhadsathe | May 8, 2009 9:00 AM

Michelle, in your heart you know it's true that the way you were raised was and still can be the best way for many, many people. Too bad you can't encourage them to make that choice. Instead you offer this...

"In most families, both parents have to work, and even if people want to make the choice to stay home. And again, there is no subjective analysis or -- of what is better. But people can't make the choice."

The First Man's Feminist supporters would become red faced and foam at the mouth if you were to say that one parent at home is the ideal choice for a child. Too bad you can't say that day care might be able to keep children safe, but day care will never love and nurture children the way a parent will, because day care has no personal stake in their future.

First Mom, there are plenty of couples with one salary that can and do make the choice to parent their own children without day care or Federal assistance of some kind or other. They rent instead of own, buy their clothes at Good Will, shop at Aldi, drive one car or use public transportation, just like in the old days when you were growing up. There are still smart people like your parents, who knew how to stretch one dollar into two.

For these parents, not having a chief of staff and personal assistant isn't a sacrifice. They have made a deliberate choice to live simply and make their children the centerpiece of their lives. Forgoing the trappings of a prosperous life (owning a home, vacations to the shore, cell phones, hi def TV's, SUV's and $500 tennis shoes) affords them the greater luxury of a sound night's sleep, knowing that their children are properly loved.

You know it's true, Michelle. Too bad you can't speak the truth.

Mrs. Obama is so very out of touch. As other posters have stated, the best thing the government can do for working families is to CUT TAXES. QUIT RAISING TAXES-ON EVERYONE. The claim by Mr. Obama that 95% of Americans will not having taxes raised is UNTRUE. Mrs. Obama, who is going to pay for child-care on site? Who is going to pay for child-care leave for employees? Who will pay for Flex-hours for employees? THE EMPLOYER will! Have you ever tried to run a business, Mrs. Obama? Have you every tried to make a payroll? Have you had to cover the FEDERAL Government DRAFT from your company checking account each month? The answer is NO, NO, NO. Don't speak of what you don't know. She is Extreme Arrogance on display. Liberals always like to spend other people's money to make themselves look good and to buy votes. Go get a real life.

Unlike most working parents Michelle doesn't have to worry about the quality of the private school her children attend. She has a choice that most of us are denied by the Democrats and the Teachers' Union. Between Arugela and Wagu beef, and obnoxious airplane jaunts on AirForce one that terrorize a city - where does it end?

The Obamas have no idea what the average American faces day after day. No idea - none - nadda. They became the elite very early in life - through the opportunities offered by this great nation - which her husband is trying to 'CHANGE'!!!
They do know that creating class distinction might keep their base connected - and they do that so well.

Posted by: raltiere | May 8, 2009 8:37 AM

Just wondering who is paying for Obama's mom in law to live in the White House?
Taxpayers or the royal family?

Posted by: whitehousewatcher | May 8, 2009 8:34 AM

Mrs. Obama, do you know one of the reasons one income in the household doesn't work anymore? Do you know why one parent cannot usually afford to stay home any more with the children? Taxes! If you want to help working families, convince your husband to support across the board tax rate reductions!

Posted by: networth | May 8, 2009 8:32 AM

Most families do have a chief of staff and assistants; they are called parents. The Obama's have the staffs (which are paid for by our tax dollars - a benefit other families, except the Biden's, don't get) and the grandmother, who is really raising the children, as she has been for quite some time. It's great to have a community organizer (who squandered the $180M grant given while he was in Chicago organizing) and affirmative action products as our first family. What a country!!!

Posted by: BeanerECMO | May 8, 2009 8:32 AM

This racist rant of repocrats is reviling. But what can we expect from bunch of losers? This bunch is not educated but comprise of only ignorant idiots. When their President, beloved George W. Bush played role of Nero when US was burning on piles of economic ruins, they were having orgasms. When their beloved Reagan played an act of President and invited lunatic Taliban to White house and called them fredom fighters like armies of George Washington, these people were enthralled. Today we are still paying for his sins in Afghanistan. These Jackals can blame Obama for every sin on earth, but rational people can evaluate and make judgement of their own.

Posted by: alhadsathe | May 8, 2009 8:26 AM

Someone needs to tell Mrs. Obama that the confiscatory tax system in the US drives both parents to work just to pay their income taxes, social security taxes, property taxes, local taxes, school taxes, sales taxes, etc... Funny in a speech to "working families" (whatever that is) she made a joke about having personal assistants and a cook. Really slick. "Let them eat cake" is spot on.......

Posted by: CaptainSaaS | May 8, 2009 8:23 AM

The sad thing is that the liberal and social elite will agree with her and call her the most caring woman in the world for wanting the same things for the "little people"
And oh my...she just works so hard..parties, shopping, spending the taxpayers money.

Posted by: libwithiq | May 8, 2009 8:03 AM

"is something that keeps many of us up at night....You're just wondering where are we going to put our children where we feel like that they're being safe, that they're safe and being loved. That will relieve many of the stresses that parents feel on the job throughout the day."

I think everyone can agree that government day care is the last place were our children will be safe and loved.

Is anybody reeeally shocked that a political insider who thinks they are working for the people continually say things that are stupid, uninformed, and out of touch.

This woman's college thesis was, "Successful blacks turn their backs on the black community due to exposure to white people." Thankfully her own surveys of successful blacks didn't back up her own thesis, but she still didn't give up the notion.

It couldn't be education and exposure to the business world led people to discover that being nursed on the gov't teet isn't economic fairness, but elimination of any motivation to achieve on one's own.

Only 3.8 to 7.8 more years to go. Or 30.8 if the Obama's have their way.

Posted by: TomGenin | May 8, 2009 7:57 AM

120% indeed. What a stupid comment. It only serves to highlight what an inflated sense of importance this woman has.

Posted by: dmzrn | May 8, 2009 7:55 AM

Considering Michelle's job at the University of Chicago Hospitals was to make sure no poor people cluttered their emergency room, I'm sure she gave 120%. In fact, she had so much to give, she gave David Axelrod's firm a contract at the same time. Her job was so vital (they almost tripled her salary when Barack became a U.S. Senator), once Michelle left to live in the White House, the University of Chicago eliminated her position completely.

Posted by: jimboster | May 8, 2009 7:55 AM

The problem with all this clamoring for workplace perks for parents (like time off when the kids are sick and "flexible" working hours) is those without kids---or with a partner who stays home with the kids---have to pick up the slack. If you leave the office every day at 4:30 to pick up Jimmy from soccer practice, guess who gets *every single* late afternoon emergency assignment that keeps someone working until the wee hours of the morning?

Treat all employees the same, regardless of how many spawn they've amassed.

Only someone who has lived a charmed, insular, spoiled life would say something as arrogant as this! Meanwhile, the rest of us toil to support the "$540 Tennis Shoes" lifestyle. Sorry Michelle, I don't have a chief of staff or a personal assistant or $540 tennis shoes. But I pay taxes through the nose to pay for yours. Enjoy the arrogance while it lasts.

Posted by: wollefs | May 8, 2009 7:30 AM

"Everyone should have a chief of staff and a set of personal assistants,"

Well that would be nice.....To bad your husband is trying to make it so nobody can have a chief or staff. His plan to redistribute wealth by taxes is going to leave everybody poor.
