Mrs. Obama, Sweeping the Clouds Away in N.Y.

By DeNeen L. Brown
On her first visit to New York since she became first lady, Michelle Obama set aside time for a special stop today -- to "Sesame Street"

"And I was thrilled," Mrs. Obama told employees of the U.S. mission to the United Nations. "I never thought I'd be on Sesame Street with Elmo and Big Bird. ... I'm still thrilled. I'm on a high."

She told the employees that she was on the public-broadcasting show to discuss nutrition and healthy eating. (She did not say when her episode of the show would be broadcast.)

Mrs. Obama said with a smile that her meeting with the two Muppet legends was "probably the best thing I've done so far in the White House."

Her agenda at the U.N. mission, meanwhile, was simply to say thank you to federal employees. Since becoming first lady, Mrs. Obama has visited many federal agencies in Washington -- including the Departments of Education, Housing and Urban Development, Interior and Homeland Security -- to express gratitude to bureaucrats who often work tirelessly out of the spotlight.

"Many people don't hear that," she said. "Many people don't feel that the years that they've put in sometimes are not appreciated. And my visits are a simple way of saying yes, in fact, we see you, we know who you are, we value what you do."

While on her tour of federal agencies, Mrs. Obama, who was called "the closer" during the presidential campaign because of her ability to connect with audiences, has often promoted some of the president's messages. At the United Nations today, Obama spoke of the president's "new era of engagement when it comes to advancing America's interests around the world."

"And we've learned this again with the recent outbreak of the H1N1 virus," Obama said. "We know now that we cannot wall ourselves off from issues that are challenging our neighbors. It is moments like this when having relationships based on mutual trust and respect will be most beneficial. And as the world becomes even smaller and our future more interconnected and the stakes ever higher, your work is more important. It has never been more important."

I can't tell you how impressed I am with the Obamas' abilities to connect with, well, starting with us regular folk, most anybody. They recognize the importance to do so too. As messengers for change, they make it a point to "get out there" picking people and places from everywhere. Today, a man told me with the election of the blacks now in the White House, they are on a mission of revenge. The rest of the blacks are now on that same mission. Huh? What is this fellow reading? Sure isn't anything I've seen anywhere. Then I'm not a reader of the fear-anger-hate material a percentage of the old guard remain immersed in. I hope and pray this can change too. Be a part of the change. Start with a change of heart. Sesame Street, nice; this neighborhood's residents are all about learninng and improving. Sesame Street. Yes. We can.

Some of this coverage does seem over-blown, but I don't EVER RECALL SEEING ANY NEGATIVE PRESS for either of the Mrs' Bush's.
A little happiness isn't a bad thing. She is representing the USA for Christ's sake.

Michelle Obama is an incredible First Lady, who, along with her husband is restoring the good name of the United States world-wide after eight years of horror that left your reputation in tatters and your credibility gone. She is the epitome of grace and intelligence and shares enormous popularity with The doubt most of the other negative/borderline nasty comments here come from Republicans who just can't accept the fact that things have changed and will never be the same again. I, for one, say thank God for that..."Dubya" and Co. decimated the country --- the fall-out from which is still being dealt with to this day. (Did someone say torture?!?) The President and the First Lady are truly incredible and are taking the country back from the right wing neo-cons who tried to destroy it.

First Lady Michelle Obama will make a great impact on Sesame Street. All the previous sore-losermen aside, the American people love her. And the more we know about her and her FLOTUS agenda, the more we give thanks for the First Family. Happy Mothers' Day to the First Grandmother and First Lady.

Sounds like the Queen is courting her subjects as she and the King have to hire 250k more bureaucrats just to spend the stimulus package. How sweet of her to go agency by agency using our money to buy future votes. Let's have a serious presser on why her hospital salary skyrocketed after her husband secured earmarks for her employer.

Why would this be considered news? Did she wear her $600.00 tennis shoes while many in the country are too poor to buy shoes for their children??? And most likely get poorer with the increased governmental spending paid for by taxpayers.

Just a suggestion to the fawning media. I realize you have invested heavily in the incompetent, inept, naive, out of his league junior Senator from nowhere, but you're over doing it. We don't need 24X7 reminders that she got a 236% raise when her husband put in a $6 million earmark for the hospital she worked in, a job which was eliminated when she left curiously and coincidentally enough. Maybe if you did your journilastic duty the nation would know more about these two and their politics of hate for America!

Michelle Obama isn't any Jackie Kennedy but the Press continues to push her on the American public. She belongs in the background with Sara Palin.
