Obama, Biden Promote Stimulus

By Michael A. Fletcher
The White House will announce plans this morning to vastly increase the so-far sluggish pace of spending under the $787 billion stimulus bill.

Over the next 100 days, the administration hopes to boost spending as money is disbursed to fund an array of projects and programs -- from improvements in national parks to youth summer jobs.

"We have a long way to go on our road to recovery but we are going the right way," Obama said in a statement released in advance of a cabinet meeting where the program was to be discussed. "Our measure of progress is the progress the American people see in their own lives. And until that progress is steady and solid; we're going to keep moving forward. We will not grow complacent or rest. Surely and steadily, we will turn this economy around."

The economy, while showing some signs of improvement in recent weeks, continues to shed jobs, putting pressure on the administration to highlight the impact of the stimulus bill. Unemployment stands at 9.4 percent, the highest figure in a quarter century.

Consequently, some critics have questioned the effectiveness of the stimulus measure, which the administration has said would save or create more than 3 million jobs.

From the start, the administration said unemployment would continue to rise for some time despite the spending package, and that the stimulus measure would mostly cushion the decline before eventually pointing the way toward recovery.

During the first 100 days since being signed into law, the administration claims that measure has saved or created 150,000 jobs. As spending ramps up over the next 100 days, the bill is expected to save or create an additional 600,000 jobs, the White House said.

"We've laid a good foundation in the first 100 days of the Recovery Act and in the next 100 we plan to build on that foundation and accelerate our efforts so we can accomplish even more," said Vice President Biden, who is overseeing the measure's implementation. "We're going to get more dollars out the door, more shovels into the ground and more money into the pockets of workers and families who need it most."

It can be proven that Obama saved 150,000 jobs since he's been President. He did it by staying the course in Iraq.

They're just throwing out big round numbers: 150,000 of this and 600,000 of that. It's stupid, but will probably fool a lot of people. What are these people going to be doing exactly? Where will they be working? Sounds like a waste of money to me. Why not just cut our taxes and we'll spend the money. What a concept.

Like another poster pointed out, I also see things improving. I have been out of work since August 08, have had 1 interview in September of '08, and two interviews in February and March of '09. I had another interview in April, and now have 6 applications out just this past month. These are all jobs I am fairly qualified for, and not just potshots across the bow. One is with FEMA, and is the best paying of the bunch. At this point, I'd love any kind of job.

We need Bill OReilly to waterboard these democrates ,spending our taxes for the economy get em Bill.

Posted by: sgtpepper1 | June 8, 2009 8:17 PM

I wonder how many of the 600,000 will be government jobs?

Posted by: khaley09 | June 8, 2009 8:13 PM

Most of these are summer jobs, which are temporary jobs. That is less than two months for these people to work than they have no job again.

It is just hype so that it can appear to the statistics next month that the economy is improving.

Posted by: anotherperspective11 | June 8, 2009 8:06 PM

This "we saved jobs" is garbage, pure and simple. When the average for several months has been hitting 600,000 jobs lost at least every month, then saying you have saved something is a comment that cannot be proven, is baseless, and is nothing more than pure political spin. And now what is he going to do about the tens and tens of thousands being laid off through Chrysler and GM - plants, dealers, service people, those who provide parts etc...... but he is saying how wonderful he has done in saving a number of jobs - a figure probably they drew out of a hat and can't verify? Oh, I forget the 25 police cadets he supposedly saved and are now going to be laid off anyway, and the new impersonator - I guess that is 26 he can maybe lay credit to for a short time anyway.

Posted by: justmyvoice | June 8, 2009 8:02 PM

I voted for Obama, and I cannot phatom 600k jobs in 2 months. WTF he think fooling. Obama, c'mon son, you darn well, that wont happen. We are talking thousands of jobs will need to be created by the hour and that is impossible.

Obama, you are losing the black vote by the day, as you have lied, manipulated, and are squarndering our tax dollars to the banks when you could had taken the remaining TARP funds and cut income taxes for middle class and lower income americans.

You sir are in TROUUUUUUUUUBLE.

obviously obama was too busy standing in front of his dorm mirror admiring himself to attend economics 101 with his classmates.

we have a friggin narcissistic moron running our country.

but he's a good orator.

The problem here is the discord between politics and economics. Most, if not all, economists (even those of the University of Chicago school of economics) agree that an economic stimulus package was essential (one larger than what was passed in some instances). However, results from stimulus plans don't appear overnight, and they don't appear only after a miniscule amount of the allocated funds have been spent. However, no politician, least of all the President can openly state that to a worried populace. All he can do is wait it out until economic forces go into play, and play head cheerleader. A cheerleader who also has to take bodyhits from the opposing team.

Personally, I prefer to take the side of those pro-stimulus economists who predict an economic recovery. While it may not be quite as fast as this President may want, I see it coming. What's my crystal ball? My own experience. After being laid off in December of last year, and no job interviews for five months, the past three weeks were marked by six job interviews and two job offers, both in my (narrow and hyper-technical) field of expertise. Others I know who worked in scientific research, healthcare and even the legal field report a slight but visible shift in their prospects. In fact, many economists report that the 9.4% unemployment rate was an artificial spike caused by a re-emergence of those who had given up their search over a year ago, but who are back in the game because of improved prospects. Stimulus plans, whether public or private, need manpower and systems in place to get going. This takes time. However, once the systems are in place, the process will be much faster. Incidentally, the $787 billion in stimulus money is not intended for the payroll of 600,000 jobs as someone on this board incorrectly stated. The stated goal was the net prevention of loss of jobs and creation of about 3-4 million jobs, as well as massive investments in science, technology, infrastructure, etc. With that money, you are buying tangible and intangible goods - raw material, finished products, services, future contracts - in addition to labor.

the tall skinny one spends 787 *BILLION* of money..not HIS money..but the TAXPAYERS.. and now the messiah promises 600,000 jobs this summer.

wow.

that comes out to 1.3 MILLION DOLLARS PER JOB.

that sounds like IDIOT MATH.

obama?

Posted by: DriveByPoster | June 8, 2009 7:42 PM

1. How do you save a job ?
2. How do we know, we have saved jobs ?
3. How do you go, about counting saved jobs ?

Do any of you Obamabots, have a "Spin" answer too just what the he11 Obama is talking about ?

Posted by: dashriprock | June 8, 2009 7:20 PM

Yea, and these are good paying, career type jobs with retirement and health benefits that can be taxed so that the rest of us can have free health care.

See, when you elect god (at least according to Newsweek's Even Thomas) you do get results.

Looks like two dems switched parties in the NY senate giving the majority to the GOP.

Of course, the left says this is blatantly illegal - as Spector smirks while on his knees in front of obama.

And where will these jobs be?

IN THE BLOATED, ALL-CONTROLLING SOCIALIST FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, of course.

Bureaucrats are needed to run the nationalized American finance industry, the nationalized American banking industry, the nationalized American auto industry, the soon-to-nationalized American healthcare industry and to control ALL ASPECTS of American life.

The loony-left d-crat socialist "Road to Hell" will be paved by millions of bureaucrats.

After I read the article "Obama seeks global uranium fuel bank", I sagest that the first thing to do is to check his sociological profile, I have a bad feeling that the problems in his had are not the weird ears.

Posted by: heibett | June 8, 2009 1:32 PM

obama just has to say he saved 600,000 jobs...
not that he did...
he just says he did...
pathetic...

Posted by: DwightCollins | June 8, 2009 1:17 PM

This incompetent joke can't find his a$$ with both hands, knows nothing about fixing the economy, but is out there promising 600,000 jobs. Obviously he thinks the whle country is as stupid as the people who elected him.
What an embarrassing moron he is.

Posted by: LarryG62 | June 8, 2009 12:45 PM

OK...according to the article help for summer jobs will be on the way within 100 days. According to my rudimentary mathematic
skills this leaves approximately 2 days remaining of summer if the initiative requires anything close to 100 days.

Now...I've heard that some " promises" or funding initiatives, as "promised" have been ignored, omitted, eleminated.

I notice the pattern is a warm speech and promise anew.
I hear from too many people of diverse interests their "promises" are simply unfilled.

And this article reinforces what I've heard.

Big smile, Big Money Gets and the little guy is left with a little of nothing. It seems true.

The two domestic areas, Obama has a firm grip on. Is rhetoric & spending.

Posted by: dashriprock | June 8, 2009 12:01 PM

WHEN HILLARY WARNED OF THE 'VAST RIGHT-WING CONSPIRACY,' SHE SPOKE FROM PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE.

UNDER BUSH-CHENEY, IT WAS CODIFIED INTO A PERVASIVE, MULTI-AGENCY 'EXTRAJUDICIAL PUNISHMENT AND CONTROL NETWORK'...

...THAT TEAM OBAMA HAS NAIVELY ALLOWED TO CONTINUE.

Federal community policing and related civilian volunteer programs have been transmogrified into a federally-enabled vigilante army that uses covertly implanted GPS tracking devices and classified microwave radiation "directed energy weapons" to stalk, harass -- and yes, torture -- unjustly "targeted" American citizens and their entire families.

Victims maintain their politics and ethnic background factor into their targeting.

Every law enforcement agency in the nation knows about it this covert GPS "harassment protocol" and lets it happen -- an American Gestapo hiding in plain sight.

And an array of secret federal "programs of personal destruction" slowly erodes the livelihoods and finances of the unjustly targeted -- with the forced cooperation of the private sector, co-opted by laws intended to be used against terrorists.

Victims -- including the writer of the article linked below -- have demanded a civil rights investigation by the U.S. Justice Department. Local and federal authorities listen -- but do nothing, and do not seem interested in hard leads that could lead directly to local vigilantes who are terrorizing their neighbors on a daily basis.

Team Obama -- YOU are in the cross-hairs of this nationwide civilian brownshirt army, too. Your Bush holdovers know all about it.

PLEASE WAKE UP and take down this neo-fascist police state apparatus before it takes down YOU along with untold thousands of the "unjustly targeted."

If you want to do something about this mess call your Congressional representiative and demand they support Ron Paul and HR 1207 to audit the Federal Reserve.

While you are at it look at HR 1868 a bill to end the anchor baby issue,"Birthright Citizenship Act of 2009
To amend section 301 of the Immigration and Nationality Act to clarify those classes of individuals born in the United States who are nationals and citizens of the United States at birth."

Posted by: Bubbette1 | June 8, 2009 11:43 AM

I would like an AIG executive sized bonus. I wonder if Obama has actually read the bill yet. Incompetent.

Posted by: XLiberalJack | June 8, 2009 11:39 AM

And now the stupid part of our population comes out from under their rock again.

"only a tiny fraction of the stimulus money has been dispersed, yet"

S.C. Supreme Court "ordered" the idiotic Governor to take the money and put it to good use. Not to pay off the debt accumulated yet by another GOP government of worthless clowns.

Get a grip on reality you morons before you spew your hate and show your "true core values......racism and bigotry"

Posted by: mackiejw | June 8, 2009 11:35 AM

What a joke, the first time he promised to make stimulus jobs he said 300,000 -- the result, undetectable. Now the government needs to borrow billions in the public market to fund these political pay back, make-work, projects. His estimate of 600,000 workers is an off-the-wall, wishful thinking, estimate. It seems Obama has no fiscal sense whatsoever, and he has staffed the Treasury and other financial departments with yes-men who dare not point out the folly of this borrowing.

Obama should consider the fact that borrowing so much money crowds out private borrowers who might even hire more workers than this, or might prevent serious job loss. Obama could make the net jobs lost/created performance better if he did nothing at all and stopped adding to the national debt.

It seems the economy is improving without the effects of the first stimulus which has really not kicked in yet -- so why make the situation worse?

Obama is a profoundly arrogant, ignorant, and evil man (witness the billions of dollars illegally stolen from the Chrysler and GM bondholders), and it seems his ambition is to become a dictator of America in the same spirit as the fascist Benito Mussolini. So far almost everything Obama has done is either unethical, illegal, or unconstitutional.

Even the Democrats should disavow this criminal.

Posted by: aelemay | June 8, 2009 11:33 AM

I'm sure the stimulus has been effective for some very rich people to get even more very rich, even though they were probably already rich beyond imagination, the rich just can't seem to get enough on their own and now need our Government handouts too. And BOY, do they have the guy in office they need to get a handout!

Posted by: Impeachbush99 | June 8, 2009 11:24 AM

and Obama promises to not raise taxes, to reduce the national debt, to instigate tough financial regulatory reform, blah, blah, BS, blah, BS, blah, BS, blah....

Posted by: Impeachbush99 | June 8, 2009 11:22 AM

Is it too late to repeal the bail-out bill that Congress did not review? Can Congress repeal it and this time actually take the time to debate and try and focus the spending to where it may actually do some good?

Posted by: Bubbette1 | June 8, 2009 11:19 AM

I would be unalterably opposed to allowing any expenditure of money derived from any tax imposed upon US citizens to employ any non US citizen in this country legally or illegally. Billions of dollars are transferred to Mexico and other foreign countries annually by non US citizens employed here. This money in no way helps to stimulate our economy. It is lost to us. President Obama wishes to spend money which we will have to repay as taxpayers, to create jobs in an effort to revive our economy which is still declining despite the recent massive handouts. Any further expenditures should be designed to provide jobs exclusivly to citizens of our country. No exceptions.

Posted by: vesydowconsider | June 8, 2009 11:08 AM

Surprise, surprise..........our beloved President has managed to acquire the authorization to spend $787 Billion of our current and future tax dollars to create a claimed 600,000 jobs. Well dust off my productivity socks.......that is over $13 Million dollars per job. Gosh, maybe even the gurus of business at GM could do as well......what a ROI to the American Taxpayer.

Posted by: josephn801 | June 8, 2009 10:58 AM

Jerzy,

You spaz... I lost my job during
the Bush Admin.

Congress and POTUS need to pass
the residential Solar tax credits.

That alone would create at least
100,000 jobs in the first year.
And most likely another 100,000
jobs each year respectively.

Posted by: theman_in_black | June 8, 2009 10:55 AM

Oh well, the stimulus is a failure but at least the Obama Administration ensured the Wall Street Fat Cats, Bankers and failing corporations executives got their massive bonuses and can continue with their ridiculous compensation plans.

Posted by: Impeachbush99 | June 8, 2009 10:47 AM

Quote of the Day:

Recession is when your neighbor loses his job.

Depression is when you lose yours.

And recovery is when Obama loses his.

Posted by: Jerzy | June 8, 2009 10:47 AM

BS. 150,000 jobs WHERE EXACTLY/SPECIFICALLY!??? I've only heard 1 real story, a bridge and 20 temporary contract workers...the country is rocking now!...

You can't initiate a recovery by giving all the money to the rich greedy SOBs who continually gamble all their money away...

Posted by: Impeachbush99 | June 8, 2009 10:45 AM

Yeah, right. Promises, promises. This dumba$$ still doesn't get it, but he keeps promising.
What an embarrassing incompetent moron.

Posted by: LarryG62 | June 8, 2009 10:44 AM

Does this mean the stimulus is a failure, that the White House needs to sell it all over again? Why not just point to the latest economic numbers as proof of its necessity?
