Sotomayor Breaks Her Ankle

By Michael D. Shear
Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor was taken to George Washington University Medical Center in the District this morning for X-rays of her right ankle after stumbling at the La Guardia airport in New York, White House officials said.

The X-ray revealed a small fracture in her ankle. She was released from the hospital after less than two hours and is now using crutches, said Ben LaBolt, an assistant press secretary at the White House.

"This morning, on the way to Washington, D.C., Judge Sotomayor tripped at LaGuardia Airport. After an X-ray at Medical Faculty Associates, it was determined that Judge Sotomayor has a small fracture in her right ankle," LaBolt said. "She has been treated and released, and is looking forward to keeping her full schedule of meetings on Capitol Hill this afternoon."

LaBolt said Sotomayor was rushing through the hallways at LaGuardia to catch her flight when she injured her foot. He said she boarded her plane despite the injury and traveled to the Old Executive Office Building next to the White House before determining that she needed treatment.

The judge, who was nominated by President Obama to be an associate justice on the court, had been in New York over the weekend and was returning to Washington, where she is scheduled to continue meeting with senators today.

LaBolt said she will meet with: Sens. Max Baucus, Charles Grassley, Kay Hagan, Mary Landrieu, Jeanne Shaheen and David Vitter.

Her brief visit to the hospital is an indication of how her life has changed since the nomination. Her face is now recognizable around the country, and even a visit to get medical care is quickly noticed.

Sotomayor was spotted at the Ambulatory Care Center at 22nd and I Streets in Washington arriving in a wheel chair and surrounded by an entourage of security officials and aides.

One person who saw her arrival at the hospital said she arrived in one of two black sedans typical of those used by Washington politicians.

The ringer for the Obama Court that will allow 40 million illegal aliens into the country just had another wise Latina woman experience. I guess the next one will be to have 10 anchor babies in rapid succession.

Too old! Nah. Mexicans can have babies when they're 100 years old. That's why they have 5 times more people than they can feed in Mexico and that's why they're moving here with our government's blessing. We have alot more stuff than they do and they want our stuff so they just come over and take it. Wow, with all this stuff we've stolen, we can have ALOT MORE BABIES. LET'S FIESTA!!!!!

I guess her drinking is getting worse again. Sorry to see that. Hope they can get her dried out for the Senate hearings.

Posted by: PercyKution | June 8, 2009 10:56 PM

Must admit, some of you are really funny. But than again, there are more of you that are down right MEAN! Be nice.

Posted by: jakesfriend1 | June 8, 2009 10:32 PM

It was somewhat a relief to know it happened at the airport. For awhile I thought she was taking dance lessons in preparation for all the balls she will be attending in Washington.

Posted by: jakesfriend1 | June 8, 2009 10:29 PM

jellyhouse56, You've obviously never broken a bone in your ankle or foot. A cast or boot and crutches are required for weeks.

Posted by: trudy41 | June 8, 2009 9:36 PM

Just when you thought she had run out of ways to lean far to the left...

Posted by: reston75 | June 8, 2009 9:24 PM

I'm pretty sure they'll have a congressional democratic put together and come up with some grainy footage of Dick Cheney tripping her....for which he will be waterboarded.

Posted by: nobama2012 | June 8, 2009 8:55 PM

I support her and think she was an ok choice, but these comments have me laughing out loud! Some of you need to be writing for the late night shows! Great job!

Posted by: madstamina | June 8, 2009 8:20 PM

Since she the puppet of Obama now and a hardcore liberal, I am sure she will find a way to blame someone else for her injury and then sue the hell out of them.

Posted by: AldoFaCaldo | June 8, 2009 8:08 PM

"a small fracture in her ankle" and she's on crutches? Are you kiddin me ? 47 million americans without health insurance would not be so fortunate.jeeez

A wise Latina with her life experiences should walk better than a white man. Right?

Posted by: RealTexan1 | June 8, 2009 8:00 PM

More richness for her life experiences which will allow this wise latina woman to make even better decisions than white men who don't break their ankles.

Posted by: pgr88 | June 8, 2009 7:59 PM

Sotomayor was running for the bathroom after eating a burito!

Posted by: jellyhouse56 | June 8, 2009 7:39 PM

Just when I thought she couldn't get any uglier.

Posted by: highwaybluesoccer | June 8, 2009 7:24 PM

You know what this means. The burning question now is, as a Hispanic female, will she heal faster than a White male?

Seriously WP -- get with it and give us the scoop already.

Posted by: cfw730 | June 8, 2009 7:20 PM

The military term is malingering. In political terms its called a "sympathy play".

It is amazing how many Democrats manage to "break" something or otherwise hurt themselves when they are about to be put under the microscope.

Posted by: Democrat_Culture_of_Corruption | June 8, 2009 6:49 PM

By tripping and fracturing her ankle "running through the airport" a la O.J, Ms. Sotomayor (who, by the way, looks at least 10 years older than she is) demonstrates that she is a little too imprudent, a little clumsy, and not careful-traits that we HOPE are not reflected in any future Supreme Court opinions she may write!

Posted by: farfalle44 | June 8, 2009 6:45 PM

Did she go to, a white male doctor ?

Posted by: dashriprock | June 8, 2009 6:26 PM

I smell lawsuit .

Posted by: PIA9 | June 8, 2009 6:10 PM

I broke my ankle several years ago, and recall how painful it felt. I admire her strength to board the plane anyway. However, it would have been better for her to get her ankle x rayed right after breaking it.

I send her thoughts of healing and I pray her ankle heals faster than my did.

For those of you that don't like this woman...she is of the light...and with so many of the dark side...I am thankful to God that Obama selected her to be a Supreme Court Justice. I know she would have believed Justice William Renquist was telling the truth when the CNIA (aka CIA) was mind controlling him. The autrocities Justice Renquist suffered is horrific. He was telling the truth.

Truly,
Karen Romero

Sorry dude, but la raza and the National Council of La Raza are two separate things. But, your Kentucky Colonel heritage entitles you to a free bucket of chicken and a shotglass of bourbon. (Oh, did I stereotype you? Sorry. Tofu and locally grown light wine).

The NLCR is an Old Guard civil rights industry hack group, much like tired old Jesse Jackson, PUSH, SCLC, etc.

At one time, they may have had a purpose, but today it seems to most folks that they exist to give well paying jobs to folks like Sotomayor-professional victims, and to push a self-serving agenda for quotas, affirmative action (cleverly packaged by leading marketers as "diversity").

They spew the same self-serving and exclusionary view that narrow-minded folks find appealing. The Klan with better grooming habits and a resume with affirmative action credentials. The Hispanic Supremacist Movement if the Southern Poverty Law Center found they had guns or something.

Sotomayor has a track record of enforcing the Old Guard race-card playing school of Democratic politics and Republican appearance-keeping. In education, in professional work, in litigation, and in rulings.

Sotomayor is not the wisest nominee possible, nor the most qualified. She is more than sufficient, and possesses the correct gender (most desired trait) and race (a desired trait). She also serves the additional political purpose of appealing to more narrow-minded Democratic voters and some independents. She pleases the base (aside from NARAL, et al). She is hardly a bomb-thrower, but she does see things through the racial and gender lens.

She apparently wasn't chewing gum, so I don't know the reason for her accident, and I wish her a speedy recovery. No worse than Dick Cheney, etc. and all the other white males who have taken a spill at her age.

But, she will always be fair game for her racial exclusionary speech, litigation, and rulings.

Her ankle will heal. Her mind will always think race first, gender second, New York or urban third.

Ruth does what the ACLU tells her. Sonia will follow predictable NCLR, PRLDF, and other special interest group influence as well.

Sotomayor is the Devil we know. Please confirm her ASAP. It's a done deal. But, she asked for this job. And Obama was set on this. It's the price of doing business.

Posted by: mmmmm999999m34e56ee91099 | June 8, 2009 5:56 PM

When you pull your foot out of your mouth too quickly, especially after it's been in there for a long time, bad things can happen.

But a wise white male already knows that.

Posted by: upbeatdad52 | June 8, 2009 5:48 PM

May she heal quickly and well as she recovers in New York where she will remain for years to come.

Posted by: Obama_TRAITOR_in_Chief | June 8, 2009 5:45 PM

During his weekend date trip with his wife to Broadway, Obama called Sonia Sotomayor to keep her spirits up in the face of mounting criticsm from the GOP. Inspired by the show he'd just seen, he told the judge to "break a leg."

On Monday, she complied.

Posted by: Xlnt | June 8, 2009 5:44 PM

Now, she should pay more than I do in health insurance. Breaking her ankle like that shows she's not in good physical condition and shows how much of a risk factor she is as she ages.

Posted by: crumppie | June 8, 2009 5:43 PM

So wonderful to see the rank and file of the Ku Klux Klan posting here. They must have received their talking points memos from Boss Limbaugh, the new Grand Dragon of the GOP, a/k/a Ku Klux Klan.

Posted by: VeloStrummer | June 8, 2009 5:29 PM

As a wise latina(tm), I would caution here to not run as fast in white male dominated airports....

Posted by: luca_20009 | June 8, 2009 5:20 PM

D@mn racist airports are always injuring minorities with compelling life stories!

Posted by: pgr88 | June 8, 2009 5:16 PM

I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not navigate an airport hallway better than a white male.

Posted by: STLinsider | June 8, 2009 5:06 PM

Y'know, La Raza is a racist organization the same way the Sons of Italy is, or the Ancient Order of Hibernians (look it up). Every other immigrant community, down through America's history, has had this same kind of organization, until they were accepted by the mainstream, often through economic power and/or intermarriage. Europeans (especially the 'I-Ties' and the 'Potato-eaters') have all assimilated because 'they look like us,' and now speak the version of American English local to the state they live in.

In other words, to you white SOBs who are so frightened by a woman, especially one that doesn't look like your Mama, remember, once upon a time, your grandma got treated that way when she got off the boat and couldn't speak english.

- Written by a white Irish/English/German male whose family's Kentucky land deed was signed by Tho. Jefferson, and whose every family member, backwards, sideways and down, has had a job, worked for a living, and gladly paid taxes as the price of civilization. Which somehow includes you racist SOBs.

Irish Prayer

Lord, may those who love us, love us.
May those who do not love us, may you turn their hearts.
And may those whose hearts you cannot turn, may you turn their ankles, so we'll know them by their limping.

Apparently, a white Irish firefighters prayer was answered.

Cause they'll never turn her heart to anything but love for La Raza.

But, hey, it's a great personal injury lawsuit. She has often sued the government to get ahead. Ka-Ching mamacita. Go for it! It was probably an incompetent white male carpet installer. Viva La Raza. Don't give up the fight, baby. Keep pulling. Don't let the agony of this "physical challenge" get you down! And, Hey!!! Disabled Persons parking plaque and ADA lawsuits, too!!!!! Buena Suerte, no? We need more lawyers like You, baby. Not those white boys who got us in the terrible mess on Wall Street and the Jackpot Justice system. Sotomayor es so-so-mejor!!!

Posted by: borntoraisehogs | June 8, 2009 4:41 PM

Of course she was rushing down the hallway. Someone at the other end of the hallway was opening a pack of Twinkies.

-----------

Twinkies?

No, you misheard, it was "twinks."

It was the Larry Craig crowd she was meeting with, remember?

Posted by: thegreatpotatospamof2003 | June 8, 2009 4:10 PM

Take calcium and Vitamin D supplements, eat well and strive to relax, despite the stress.

Also, watch for any sign of infection, but that should not be a problem.

And slow down, if only for an afternoon cup of tea.

When you rush too much, you go nowhere even faster. Avoid the chaos, such as it is...

Posted by: thegreatpotatospamof2003 | June 8, 2009 4:05 PM

I'm reminded of the saying about Ginger Rogers--that she did everything Fred Astaire, did, while going backwards in high heels.

Oh, look they added video. And you can see that she did not choose impractical shoes. In any other circumstance she'd be chastised for wearing "granny" shoes.

Perhaps it wasn't her most graceful day. But it isn't like she choked on a pretzel. Or shot a friend in the face. Or threw up on the Prime Minister of Japan.

Of course she was rushing down the hallway. Someone at the other end of the hallway was opening a pack of Twinkies.

Posted by: justhere | June 8, 2009 3:59 PM

She needs to lose some weight. That would reduce her chances of these types of injuries.

Posted by: BaracksTeleprompter | June 8, 2009 3:59 PM

Gee, shall we compare that with the travel decisions of a certain other GOP governor who elected to fly from Dallas to Anchorage a couple of days before she was due with a Down Syndrome baby?

Oh my gosh, The Judge will have a cane! Lord help us, a "Newyorkrican" with a stick. Now no one is safe in the court room, when they backtalk the Judge!

Head for the hills!!!!!

All kidding aside, Judge Sotomayor, I really wish you the best and I hope that your recovery is swift. Keep that leg elevated!

Posted by: Computer_Forensics_Expert_Computer_Expert_Witness | June 8, 2009 3:24 PM

Well, Straightline, you are correct in a sense.

George H.W. Bush appointed Ms. Sotomayor to the federal bench in the first place. Had he not done so, she would not have the wealth of judicial experience which now qualifies her for the US Supreme Court.

Had she not been nominated, she would not have been rushing through La Guardia trying to catch her plane to DC.

Thanks, Papa!

Wow.

I don't even like Sonia Sotomayor and I STILL find some of the comments here fairly nauseating. I reminds me of the cruel things people said about Sen. McCain's health during the campaign or the crude gloating over Sen. Kennedy's tumor.

We should all be a little bit more grown up. If you don't like Ms. Sotomayor, fine, but there is no need to revel in her unfortunate accident.

Listening to the extremists on the right argue that Blacks are racist because they voted for Obama and that Sotomayor is racist because she acknowledges her Latina experiences are different that white guys is pathetic. but when they argue that they can't be racists because they're White and oppressed, it's hysterical.

I have tripped and hurt my ankle before, and wondered for some time whether it might be broken. I figured if I could walk on it, it couldn't be too bad.

I, for one, admire the fact that she made her flight and got on with her schedule. You can object to her appointment if you want, but do you have to find a way to turn every single item of news into an excuse to slam her?

Not as brilliant as knowing you're pregnant with a Downs Syndrome child, having your water break at dawn in Texas, giving a speech at lunch, flying 10 hours back to Alaska, then drive an hour to some backwater town to have the baby delivered by a LPN in a third-rate clinic.

Next time she'll take advice from Gov. Palin.

It could be a case of someone being slightly confused and telling her to "break a leg" as is customary with actors. Hint: this is never a good idea to follow through on this "advice" or "wish" from a well-wisher. It also brings new meaning to the phrase "a sitting justice" as she's going to have to stay off that foot for a while.

I was impressed with her selection as a nominee for the post, until she opened her mouth! Thats what eating all of those pigs feet, pig ears and pig intestines gets you, so fat you cant carry yourself much less the way you handled yourself in this nomination process...she turned into a fat pig!!A racist pig at that...out to get white people!! Only a stupid woman makes a comment like she can make better decisions than a white man!! What kind of comment is that for someone who is Judge and went to Yale?? Then she says that she shouldve worded the comment better? So bascically she meant the race based attack but was too stupid to "word" it properly...so dumb and then DUMBER...go eat some more pork you pig!

If I were writing a political spy novel, I'd posit that the controversial nominee was induced to stumble by a pulsed burst from a microwave radiation "directed energy weapon" of the type carried by her security detail...

...and the the naive mainstream media would never catch on to such nefarious Donald Segretti-esque dirty tricks.

But those thing only happen in political spy novels; so, no worries, sheeple.

There is absolutely no difference between a break and a fracture. They're both generic terms that mean the same thing, although "fracture" tends to be used more by medical professionals. I'll grant that "fracture" sounds worse, but it's not.

Is it a Fracture or a Break?
Despite what you may have heard, a broken bone is not worse than a fracture, they both mean the same thing. In fact, the word fracture, according to the Oxford English Dictionary is defined as "the act of being broken." There are different types of fractures and broken bones, but these words mean the same thing.

There is not a "big" difference between fracturing and breaking. Not unless you're an idiot.

I have empathy for her injury, but not for her racist agenda.

If I read the article correctly, Sotomayor didn't 'break' her ankle, she fractured it. Big difference. Hard to resist headline 'grabbing' it appears.
