Wright Walks Back Comment Blaming 'Them Jews' for Keeping Obama from Him

By Garance Franke-Ruta
President Obama's former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright on Thursday again sought to tamp down controversy in the wake comments blaming "them Jews" for keeping him away from the president.

He had meant to refer to "Zionists" and not all Jews, he said in an interview on SIRIUS Satellite Radio's "Make it Plain" with Mark Thompson.

"Let me say like Hillary, I misspoke," Wright said. "Let me just say: Zionists."

"I was walking from a worship service to my car, trying to talk rapidly, trying to explain, answer this guy and trying to get him off the Barack Obama kick," Wright said.

"Them Jews won't let him talk to me," Wight had earlier told columnist David Squires of the Daily Press in Newport News, Va. "I told my baby daughter, he'll talk to me five years from now when he's a lame duck or in eight years when he's out of office."

The radio walk-back came on the heels of a news release Wednesday in which Wright pronounced himself, in all capital letters, "EXTREMELY DISTURBED AND DEEPLY SADDENED THAT ONCE AGAIN MY COMMENTS HAVE RESURFACED THIS DIVISIVE DEBATE ABOUT MY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MYSELF AND PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, WHOM I LOVE AS MY SON AND SUPPORT AND HONOR AS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATED OF AMERICA."

"I APOLOGIZE FOR THE WAY I FRAMED MY COMMENTS. I MIS-SPOKE AND I SINCERELY MEANT NO HARM OR ILL-WILL TO THE AMERICAN JEWISH COMMUNITY OR THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION," he said in the statement.

Wright, who was attending a minister's conference in Hampton Roads this week, had also warned in the Daily Press interview that Obama risked becoming a "a puppet" of a "political machine" and the people around him, if he did not take care.

"The Jewish vote, the A-I-P-A-C vote that's controlling him, that will not let him send representation to the Darfur Review Conference, that's talking this craziness on this trip because they're Zionists, they will not let him talk to someone who calls a spade what it is," Wright had said.

Obama was right to throw this nasty old bigot under the bus. But I still say that Pastor Manning had Obama's number from the start.

first of all, it is NOT '"them", rather, it is correctly pronounced "dem", as in 'dem jews'

I agree 100% with the Right Reverend Wright. Noone on this blog can prove what he said was wrong or incorrect. Whether you believe it or not the good reverend knows what he is discussing and there are plenty level headed knowledgeable people that agree with truth. We don't care what the status quo thinks, fact or facts and I say to him keep up the good work. Speak truth to power. Doesn' matter what people think, only what God thinks and if he is with God and God is with him, that is all that matters. God continue to bless him.

Just goes to show that the hateful position of the civil rights movement, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Wright... all of them WERE WRONG, FAILED, AND KEPT THE BLACK COMMUNITY ON THE FRINGE OF AMERICA IN EXCHANGE FOR THEIR OWN PERSONAL POWER AND INFLUENCE.

HURRAY FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA SHOWING THE WORLD THAT THEIR HATE AND BITTERNESS IS A PERSONAL FAILURE!

I am shocked and saddened at some of the reactions to Rev. Wright's ignorant statements. Filled with a sense of riteousness people on the left and right are falling over themselves to make clear that "not all Jews are Zionists" and some go so far as to further vilify the word. "Zionist" today is getting the same treatment as "socialist" or "communist" during the McCarthy era: that is, people who know nothing of the sociopolitical ideologies ascribing their own prejudiced views.

Well let me clear this up. The only constant within the pantheon of Zionist ideologies is the belief that the Jewish people (linked by history, culture, ethnicity and religion) constitute a cohesive nation that should strive for statehood. There are many types of Zionism: socialist and capitalist, religious and secular, liberal and conservative. Thus, not all Zionists support the settlements, not all Zionists justify the existence of Israel using religion, a majority of Zionists are more secular than religious. That is because every Israeli and everyone around the world who believes that Israel has a right to exist in some form and that it can exist in peace with the world is a Zionist.

Those who seek to pigeonhole Zionism as one of racism and religious extremism adhered to by a minority of Jews (who admittedly wield too much power in the Israeli parliamentary system) must look in the mirror and ask if they themselves have an agenda they are promoting in doing so.

anyone have a schedule of where Jeremiah spoke in D.C. in the last four months? until those who harbor him and provide him a forum for his bigotry are called out, he will simply keep showing up to vent his spleen. Perhaps those who have hosted him in the last four months and are so very proud of him could do us a favor and admit they invited him to speak. It would, of course, be interesting as well if you could tell us whether or not you confronted him with his anti-semitism.

What a despicable weasel that so-called man of God is. He is every bit the hate-filled redneck that von Brunn is, except that he may have better impulse control. Not a lot better, though.

Posted by: nicekid | June 12, 2009 1:26 PM

Reverend Wright you are the true racist and hate monger go away please go away. I know you are black so how could you be the racist.....................What a double standard in this world

Posted by: lildg54 | June 12, 2009 11:59 AM

What was he saying about Zionists, Jews, or Israel when Obama was a member of his church?

I don't guess it was anything much different in attitude.

Hope this isn't part of his Black Liberation theology or whatever he calls it.

The dude is offensive, inane, and a racist.

Posted by: captn_ahab | June 12, 2009 10:28 AM

"Misspoke"? Rev. Wright also miswrote:

" . . . MY COMMENTS HAVE RESURFACED THIS DIVISIVE DEBATE ABOUT MY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MYSELF AND PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA" [sic]; and

"THE UNITED STATED OF AMERICA" [sic]

Both Pres. and Mrs. Obama are highly educated people. It's too bad that they didn't invite Rev. Wright to the seder they hosted at the White House this Passover. He might have learned something - and not only about "them Jews".

Posted by: jqw3827 | June 12, 2009 10:25 AM

Now Obama really can't speak to him. True, Obama used him to gain a political foothold in Wright's neighborhood. Oh well. That's how ambitious people roll.

REV. WRIGHT: YOU ARE ANOTHER SAD, DELUDED PAWN IN AN INSIDIOUS GAME.

BLACKS AND JEWS APPEAR TO BE PRIME TARGETS OF A FEDERALLY-ENABLED 'GESTAPO USA' THAT DELIGHTS WHEN ITS VICTIMS PREY UPON EACH OTHER.

***

HOLOCAUST MUSEUM SHOOTER ENABLED BY FED-BACKED 'GESTAPO USA' EXTRAJUDICIAL TARGETING VIGILANTE NETWORK?

A federal "multi-agency coordinated action" program appears to provide funding, organizational structure and, the evidence indicates, direction, for what amounts to an "American Gestapo"...

... an extrajudicial targeting and punishment "matrix" that has drafted hundreds of thousands of citizen volunteer vigilantes to stalk, harass, terrorize and yes, TORTURE, many many thousands of unjustly "targeted" American citizens and their families...

...using covertly implanted GPS tracking devices and classified microwave radiation "directed energy weapons" -- which have been proliferated to local law enforcement nationwide by government agencies that include the Department of Justice.

This "multi-agency coordinated action" appears to be overseen by secretive security forces close to the seat of executive power (but apparently under the radar of POTUS and his closest aides).

My task here is to issue a WAKE-UP CALL to POTUS, VPOTUS, AG Holder and Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano, David Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel.

If their aides are reading this, please forward the following link to their immediate attention:

A NOTE TO SEC. NAPOLITANO: My postings here appear to be subject to near- real-time prior restraint and outright censorship that I believe emanates from the Homeland Security- supervised "fusion center" based in Newtown, Bucks County PA.

Secretary Napolitano, I believe your charges are allowing the imposition of unconstitutional prior restraint and censorship on political speech and telecommunications in America. Please do something about this. Thank you.

Dear Reverend Wright,

Aren't you beginning to feel like the lad who got into so much trouble for saying that the emperor had no clothes?

Posted by: Lazarus40 | June 12, 2009 8:35 AM

"mispoke"? That's a switch from the usual everyone misunderstood me.

Posted by: jhtlag1 | June 12, 2009 8:32 AM

Everything he does, he does for man to see: he makes loud his mouth to call attention to himself and create controversy, wears robes with long tassels, and loves the attention and best seats on talk shows and in Black Churches, and greetings in the market or to be forefront on the news, and to be called Dr. or Pastor, or Reverend.

(with apologies to Matthew 23)

Posted by: coloradodog | June 12, 2009 8:27 AM

I liked him better when he unabashedly beat up on white people. At least he was being honest.

Reverend Wright, please just speak your mind and don’t feel the need to apologize or spin what you said. You are entitled to your opinion, no matter how repugnant to mainstream America.

Posted by: xconservative | June 12, 2009 6:45 AM

The Reverend should not assume that all Jews are Zionists . . .that would be like saying all Muslims are Terrorists. Zionists and Terrorists are like two peas in a pod, both groups foster employing extreme measures to support their cause. . .what’s so sad is that THEY USE RELIGION AS AN EXCUSE TO EXIST. Damn them for doing so! They should not have the right to demoralize any religion by killing human beings and saying “God is on their side.” If it were up to me, I would denounce any group that kills human beings and associates themselves with a religion. Jews and Muslims alike believe in hell, so guess where all these murderers are going? U got it!

Posted by: tooextreme | June 12, 2009 4:59 AM

No, Mr. Wright, Obama won't talk to you in either 5 or 8 years as you claim he will.

For he is a man of honor--a description which in no way applies to you and which you no doubt don't understand in another person.

Go away. As you are being signaled to do by your leader and now-wiser former disciple.

Posted by: PostToastie | June 12, 2009 2:08 AM

Wright is clearly a nimrod.

Posted by: nodebris | June 12, 2009 2:03 AM

Rev. Wright, like many other Black Americans of his generation have suffered because of their race, far more than anyone whom has not will ever understand. There is also a complex to be found among people of his chosen profession which has them really believe that they are guided by God and that their hateful instincts have been blessed with a more righteous description. They need to shut up because they only hurt themselves and detract from their often very valuable contributions to this society. Rev. Wright is not the only black man of his age group that has had recent difficulty keeping his foot out of his mouth when addressing social issues. Reverend Jackson, Charles Rangel, Andrew Young are three whom have been challenged to make sensible comments during the Democratic Primary ...and subsequently. A couple of them have been quiet. Rev Wright needs to join them while he gets his thoughts organized into repeatable sentences.

Taylorsucram - THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOU AND ALL OTHER JEW HATERS IS THAT YOUR BIGOTRY IS COUCHED IN A CONFUSING JUMBLE OF FALSEHOODS. LOOK IN THE MIRROR, YOU ARE JUST ANOTHER RESENTFUL LOSER. THE JEWS ARE SUCESSFUL IN SPITE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU, THEY ARE SUCCESFUL. YOU APPARENTLY ARE NOT.

Posted by: gregp1 | June 11, 2009 11:14 PM

In fact, I am willing to bet that Obama himself issued instructions that he did not wish to speak to the Reverend Wright.

I think that the good Rev. should take a hint.

Posted by: aklein1404 | June 11, 2009 11:12 PM

I read Reverend Wrights comments and don't find them to be anti-semitic. Nevertheless, I concluded long ago that Reverent Wright is a racist. There is also a big difference between being a Zionist and being Jewish. Most Jews are not Zionists. Zionist believe that God gave Israel to them. They also believe that non Jews are inferior. Zionist and Nazis share much of the same approach towards the world. Instead of Aryan supremacy they believe in Jewish supremacy.
Military power and the backing of the US created Israel and permits its continued existence. If there really is a God he/she/it is not Jewish, Christian, Muslim or any other denomination.

The Good Reverend is neither a racist nor a bigot.

He is an ignorant old man that needs to learn to keep his mouth shut.

Posted by: aklein1404 | June 11, 2009 11:02 PM

Wright is such a bigot and coward. He got caught in his nasty bigoted anti-semitism and then what does he do? blames Hillary! Go back to the rock you crawled out from under or move to a "tolerant" Islamic theocracy that shares your view of Jews and women. Bigot.

Posted by: medogsbstfrnd | June 11, 2009 10:44 PM

That's OK, nlynnc. I've managed to survive having 20+ year friendships with a rock hard conservative and a far left liberal. Your call as to what that makes me.

Posted by: FairlingtonBlade | June 11, 2009 10:39 PM

Oh, he only meant Zionists--well that makes it all better....

This doesn't "tamp down" any controversy. It doesn't "walk back" his comments. It just proves what we've all thought all along about Rev. Wright. He's no friend of the Jews.

Posted by: TheFingerman | June 11, 2009 10:37 PM

I think Rev. Wrights point and the point of this article is to question the undue influence that the Israeli Lobby has on American leaders in the White House and in Congress. Jews make up less than two percent of the population of the US yet they hold 13 Senate Seats and that is the body that votes for War and/or Police Actions. AIPAC, PNAC, Joe Lieberman, Douglas Feith, Richard Perle, Henry Kissinger, Robert Reich, Casper Weinberger, Sandy Berger, Paul Wolfowitz, Ari Fleischer, Rahm Emanuel, Lewis "Scooter" Libby etc. ,just to name a few and no one disputes the fact that these individuals have "dual-citizenship" and can rightly be questioned as to where their allegiances lay. Do they work for America or do they work for Israel. Blacks, on the other hand, make up approximately 20% of the American population yet they have only "one" appointed Senate Seat. Our unswerving relationship with Israel has resulted in Israel being caught spying on us and stealing state secrets many, many times over and the deaths of over 37 American naval personnel when Israeli Jets (bought and paid for by the U.S.) knowingly fired on the American Naval vessel USS Liberty and its life-boats during the so-called “6-day war”. They receive 10's of Billions of Dollars in loans and aid that they never have to pay back ( thanks to the late Democrat Senator Alan Cranston, a staunch supporter of Israel and a Jew) and when you add this amount to the stealing of 10's of Millions of Dollars worth of "PELL Grants" during the Clinton administration (money meant for inner-city youth college funds) perhaps you can at least understand the Rev Wright and many other individuals attitude towards the nation of Israel, it has nothing to do with Anti-Semetism. The fact that honest Americans dislike jewish gangsters "Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky" does not make them Anti-Semetic, it makes them cognizant. I keep my eye on these organizations and question everything that they promote and if it is in America’s best interests. They are the "tail" that wags the "dog" and I and other Americans are getting sick and tired of it.

Posted by: Taylorsucram | June 11, 2009 10:36 PM

It's quite clear, Zionist is code for Jew. The good reverend just forgot to use the code.

Looks a little like someone from the Obama administration spoon fed him the all caps, official statement. But I'm guessing he was free associating when he couldn't resist making the sarcastic reference to Mrs. Clinton.

No matter how people try to reposition it and sweep Wright under the carpet, there's no getting past Obama's 20 years of bad judgment in his friendship with this -- and other -- misguided ideologues.

Posted by: nlynnc | June 11, 2009 9:54 PM

I'm impressed with Rev. Wright. What a guy! From "G_D America" to "..them Jews.." Nothing like telling it like it is, eh Rev?

Scumbag..

Posted by: pwhited | June 11, 2009 9:23 PM

If Jeremiah Wright were something other than a nutjob, he would know that President Barack Obama is not talking to him because his racist anti-Semitic tone will discredit anyone with whom he is associated. Perhaps Wright has become so senile that he no longer chooses his words well, and Obama recognizes that.
On the question of ethnic cleansing, Jeremiah Wright seems not to have noticed that the Israeli government removed Israelis, not Palestinians, from the Gaza strip, and did so by force. The thanks the Israeli government got for doing that is that the Hamas terrorists have been sending Katusha rockets to kill Israelis in Israel. Those actions receive no censure from Wright. He objects only to the Israelis striking back to destroy rocket implacements and the tunnels which the Palestinians have been using to import still more armaments.

Posted by: jrsposter | June 11, 2009 9:21 PM

How could this man have been the pastor---the spiritual mentor---to our president for so many years?! He is indeed a despicable bigot and a nutjob. How exactly was he not more of an issue in the election? HOW did that NOT happen?! Because the GOP candidate pulled a punch during the race. Maybe even a knockout punch. Remember that, Dems.

Posted by: RealityCheckerInEffect | June 11, 2009 9:08 PM

Obama must be thinking, "Hmm, what's worse, hemorrhoids or Reverend Wright?"
The answer is, of course, Reverend Wright.
Hemorrhoids can be removed surgically, however Obama will never get the Reverend out of his passt.

Posted by: seemstome | June 11, 2009 9:04 PM

Can you guys really get upset over what an old fool says?

You have to wonder at how little intelligence and self-worth people have who actually show up at his "house of worship".

These types of people have preyed on the black community in the U.S. for decades.

Posted by: Ombudsman1 | June 11, 2009 8:49 PM

No, Rev. We heard you, loud and clear. What you said, you meant. Even trying to say "zionist"-- well, that's just coat-tailing on muslim miso-Judaism.

Haters are haters, no matter their color.

Posted by: dahozho | June 11, 2009 8:34 PM

Well, the "Reverend" Jessie Jackson had his "hymietown" moment, the "Reverend" Al Sharpton has been quoted disparaging the "diamond merchants" in Brooklyn, and now comes the "Reverend" Wright for his anti semitic remarks.

Do you get the sense that you must take a course or two in "Hate the Jews" to become an ordained minister in the black community?

I do.

Posted by: Curmudgeon10 | June 11, 2009 8:33 PM

Reverend Wright is such an angry hateful man he should be ashamed of himself and his disgusting anti-Semitic remarks. I will say that every time I hear The Reverend Wright speak his HATE I wonder how it must of affected Obama who listened to that for 10 years. It really does make me wonder if he is anti Semitic as well.

Posted by: mimi31 | June 11, 2009 8:19 PM

What a disgusting, hateful anti-Semite he is.

He and van Brunn have a lot in common.
