Obama Takes the Girls For Frozen Custard

By Michael A. Fletcher
On the eve of Father's Day, the First Father showed how it's done, taking his daughters Malia and Sasha for some frozen treats at The Dairy Godmother, a boutique custard parlor in Alexandria.

President Obama and his girls motorcaded over to Alexandria from the White House this afternoon. Malia had a waffle cone of vanilla custard and Sasha had her vanilla custard in a cup. The president enjoyed a cup of vanilla custard with hot fudge and toasted almonds, a pool reporter was told by the shopkeeper. The three were in the shop for about 15 minutes, where they sat at a table to enjoy their snacks.

As they left, the trio received applause from the staff and customers inside and a small crowd outside. Carrying a bag of frozen "puppy pops" for the First Dog, Bo, Obama waved to the crowd before stepping into his SUV for the short jaunt back to the White House.

I see thee American people are awakening to the b.s. that the press seems wont to do. Obama takes his daughters out for treats whilst thousands of people in his own country lack Health Care and thousands arouhd the world are starving! I wonder if the people in Africa and India would like the article??

When there are 375 news stories in Google News about Obama taking his kids out to get ice cream you know your in trouble. The state run media continues to worship the man like he is a God. This is not news....

Posted by: capsnumber1 | June 23, 2009 9:14 AM

It's very difficult for me to continue to believe that most of you Obama haters hate him for the fact that he's not the stereotypical black man that you want him to portray. I know many of you want to really spread the hate because of what he looks like. The insults to First Lady Michelle must stop! Can you really be anymore racist? Yes, go President Obama! Thank you for being who you are sir, MY PRESIDENT! Thank you for setting a good example of a good human being and a great husband and father. The haters will keep on hating regardless. It's just shameful. We all ought to be supporting our PRESIDENT!

Posted by: Revolution95 | June 21, 2009 12:47 PM

I have to wonder how racist you are by asuming everyone that critizes Obama and his plethora of bad decisions is a racist. I didn't vote for Obama because he is black, unlike 95% of blacks who did vote for he because he is. I didn't vote for him because the junior Senator from Illinois had no experience. He has never been in a position to run anything, not even an icecream stand. He has never served his country and fought for anything resembling American values. He was a community organizer for ACORN, and we all know just how corrupt ACORN is. He has a socialist marxist upbringing and we can all see how that is playing into every decision he is making.

@Alex511 - No need to go there. I voted against McCain/Palin, but I think she does have a compelling family story. If Republicans are derided for hypocrisy when they don't live up to their public stance (see: Ensign, John), then it is worth applauding when one holds to ones values even at great personal cost.

Throwing rocks at Obama's kids is inexcusable. Throwing rocks at Palin's is equally so.

fr klick99:

>...Many Obama fluffers recently excused David Letterman's perverted jokes about statutory rape and Gov. Palin's child because Palin 'brought it on by bringing her kids out in public'...

The ice queen palin dragged her kids, esp that poor baby, all over Creation, as well as blab to the entire world that her daughter was pregnant. (nice talk of abstinence-only education there, mom!) She LOST (thank Heavens!) and refuses to admit it. President Obama restricted, and rightfully so, the photo shots of his children, out of concern for their safety.

Posted by: Alex511 | June 22, 2009 2:40 PM

I had no idea there were so many people with HATE in their hearts.......
I for one enjoy hearing about the FIRST FAMILY AND WHAT THEY ARE DOING....some of the language is disgraceful......just goes to prove how nasty some people operate....HATE IN THEIR HEARTS will only manifest into murderer's....just what this county needs.......another person to go around and murder people....citizens....
also, let me say I'm shocked at the number of racist still hanging on out there. WAKE UP FOLKS AND SMELL THE ROSES........TODAY COULD BE YOUR LAST DAY........BETTER ENJOY IT IF YOU CAN!

Posted by: sparky111 | June 22, 2009 1:11 PM

WAPO - I signed up just to say this: You should be ashamed and embarrassed reporting on this. This is not news. You're being used you tools. Wake up. Respect yourself, or at the very least your readership.

Posted by: connorrsmith | June 22, 2009 12:41 PM

Is this really news? The Post continues to cheapen its image by reporting fluff like this. Are we supposed to be surprised that President Obama is a father to his children? Did he really show us how it is done by taking the girls out for frozen custard? The fact that this is a headline for your paper is laughable. I guess, since the Post has everything riding on a successful Obama presidency, anything to take the spotlight away from how poorly he has performed is newsworthy.

Posted by: UVA2000 | June 22, 2009 9:31 AM

Oh for Petes sake people, is he not entitled to take his children out for some stinkin ice cream? He is the President, but that doesn't mean he isn't permitted to take time with his family, THEY ARE NOT THE PRESIDENT, they were NOT elected, he is entitled to sleep, eat, take a crap, walk, take his wife on a date and keep his marriage healthy, play basketball to keep himself healthy, go to his kids soccer games, take a family vacation, like where are the family values when it comes down to brass tacts, all these idiots want to do it complain. Obama's family is entitled to a normal as it can be family life. If he hid his children then you would be screaming elitist! They are not props and he can't go anywhere and be a normal dad without some Looney right wing nut, insane person morphing normal activites into some comspiracy or malfeasance, because a black guy is the president, picking on what ever he does. It wouldnt be right if he even agreed with you. You idiots, please don't procreate so we can give the world a chance to be reasonable.

Posted by: jacquie1 | June 21, 2009 10:55 PM

It is amazing there are so many negative comments about the president taking his daughters out for ice cream or whatever. Barack didn't start any of the wars we are engaged and he didn't create the financial crises. 50% of this country voted for this guy so if he wants to play golf 4 days a week, go to Hawaii 3 or 4 times a year, etc. That is his perrogative. I didnt like Bush an didn't vote for Barack or anyone else out there but we are free for the most part and not living anywhere else in this evil, violent world. If Barack needs to do anything right now it is to fix this country, that is it. The damn mexicans are invading this country like locusts, killing, kidnapping and over running the ability of the police forces in this country. Did anyone watch 60 Minutes tonight!!!!!!!! This country is quickly becoming unsafe.

Posted by: BJ13 | June 21, 2009 10:43 PM

Sue1980 (I guess you miss Reagan and the '80s, I'm sure), that is PRESIDENT Barack Hussein Obama. McCain-Palin lost on 4 November 2008. Move on and join the future!

mb56...I know its sad that others can pro-create and have children and be fathers..Republicans mis-spell because it drives you liberal nutcase wipe your eyes go back down into your dark basement...hug you puppy and call him 'son or daughter'..thats the best we can do for you....its not our fault your a male and like to pole dance.

Posted by: JWx2 | June 21, 2009 7:37 PM

in other news...Obama adds two more americans to his personal body count in the Obama War of Afganistan.

Afghan rocket attack kills 2 US troops, wounds 6 Americans.

you think? obama taught any of them girls to be thankful they are FREE in enjoy icecream...or is it that obama wants others fathers to be real fathers..unlike his to teach their children respect and pride.

Posted by: JWx2 | June 21, 2009 7:32 PM

Don't you just have to admire our part-time president? Friday night is "date night", Saturday is for the children and Sunday is for golfing. Never mind that North Korea is threatening, Iran is on fire and the situations in Afghanistan and Iraq are deteriorating. I guess he'll do something constructive when he gets around to it if working doesn't interfere with his sybaritic lifestyle.

Posted by: Rbeca | June 21, 2009 7:21 PM

How sad to see the pathetic little minds that fill the ranks of the Republican party look for anything and everything to vent their hate on. They are out of power and out of constructive ideas. Most can't spell or write a coherent sentence. But that doesn't stop these members of the party of "family values" from spewing vile and hateful comments on a busy father spending time with his children. How very, very sad, how very, very pathetic! They are looking more and more ridiculous all the time.

Posted by: mb56 | June 21, 2009 6:34 PM

Everyone has a right to their own opinion whether they like the president or not. All I ask is that we say it in a respectful manner. I did not vote for President Bush and did not agree with a lot of what he said, but I did not go around posting profanities and could respectfully disagree without getting personal and calling names. It seems a lot about a person's intelligence can be gauged by the type of response they make in these comments. I'm not very impressed. Obama going out for an ice cream cone should not invoke a post about him being the next Antichrist or being a Communist. If you don't like him, then don't give him the time of day or even post about him, your just giving him more press. Not all of his policies are to the liking of us Democrats that voted for him either, but can we say any President did 100% of what we wanted them to do?

President Obama cannot reverse the damage done to the financial system in a matter of months. Just like it took us years to get in, it will take us years to get out. This is not a microwave society. This will not fix in an instant. Be patient and continue to participate in your local and state governments no matter what side your on so we can have our voices heard and get some work done.

I am so happy to have had the chance to read this wonderful article. I was sitting here thinking about the economy, what has happened to my 401K, my rising cost of health care, the riots in Iran, North Korea, etcm and then I had the wonderful chance to see the American press, known for being bipartisan and only reporting relevant news, slobbering on and on and on and on about the president and his daughters buying treats for their dog. I would say more, but I have to throw up now.

More Obama fluff. Never anything of substance. Photo op here, photo op there - he's like the coolest, bestest celebrity in the world!

And once again, he's parading his kids out as props. Many Obama fluffers recently excused David Letterman's perverted jokes about statutory rape and Gov. Palin's child because Palin 'brought it on by bringing her kids out in public'. Where are those complaining gasbags now? Oh, writing articles about Obama and custard.

Posted by: klick99 | June 21, 2009 3:12 PM

Obama hater? Racist? No. I should say????

I like paying more in taxes so others can suck and mooch off of the system.

I like a wimpy, metrosexual monarch who thinks that every day is either "historic" or "critical."

I like a monarch who thinks he has his own reality show.

I like a monarch who does town hall infomercials and uses the public or his daughters as props.

Do you think I am on drugs?

Look, he's a wimp who waves his finger like a dictator or two I've seen.

The only thing he's done is run the money supply up, along with unemployment.

Where's all the "Green jobs." Where's the recovery? Where is anything, except as an orator, he sounds like a used car salesman from Ralph Williams Chrysler-Plymouth.

He isn't the only father out there. There are a lot of them looking for a J-O-B. Why doesn't the post report this.

Also, why doesn't the WAPO report the booing he gets, when the motorcade goes by?

In 2012, the ballot box shall speak of many things; including, "Your Fired!"

Yawn. The right wingnuts are busy copying and pasting from their usual screeds. My favorite is Tim Nguyen who STILL hasn't figured out how to spell socialist.

As we've descended into political name calling, I'll take my leave. That and plan to drop by the Dairy Godmother soon. Note to the wingnuts, you don't have to respect the man, but you should respect his choice in frozen custard. It's yummy.

It is hilarious that in previous blogs the Democrats continually rake Palin over the coals for "using" her children for political gain and now when B.O. does the very same thing, use his children to try and prop up his falling popularity, he is a good father. Dems can't have it both ways. And the Obama celebrity tour continues with the media.

Posted by: rosecoloredglasses1 | June 21, 2009 11:02 AM

How sweet that they live in a free country.

As an american, i apologize to the iranian people on behalf of our people for the shameful passiveness of our president at a time you are fighting for the most fundamental freedoms. As Burke said, nothing is necessary for the triumph of evil but for good men to do nothing.

Posted by: georgejones5 | June 21, 2009 10:39 AM

Does anybody care about the Obama-brats? I certainly don't. I care about the unemployment rate, the cost for gasoline, my 401k, my nation.

Who really cares about some clown who is spending money faster than Johnson did on the Vietnam War?

Is it 2012, yet?

Posted by: Computer_Forensics_Expert_Computer_Expert_Witness | June 21, 2009 10:09 AM

I think that the President's decision to keep some mid-American normalcy in his life and that of his family is one of his wisest.

Hey Republicans, your hypocrisy is showing. Aren't you supposed to be the "family values" crowd? It would probably be a lot cheaper to protect the first family if we just locked them in a closet. Interesting that none of you raised these objections when Bush was in office. How much do you think it cost us to protect them on the ranch (where he spent about a quartet of his Presidency)? Face it losers; you had your wet dream in D.C. and they systematically robbed our treasury and destroyed our country. Your failed 2009 candidate would have started dropping bombs on Iran last week if he had won. Thank God he got his droopy old butt kicked instead. So get over it; your bitterness is unbecoming.

No surprise that California, one of the richest but also most liberal state, especially in fiscal term, is the first state to go bankrupt. Now Californian socialist model with its highest tax rate, strictest enviromental protection rules, and very generous welfare and health care systems is copied by Obama administration with its ambitious, costly health care reform for everybody including 12 milliions illegal immigrants who would be naturalized under Obama immigration reform.

Oops. Evidently Dairy Godmother was the Dreamery. I forgot there was a name change (I think a trademark conflict). As it happens, just a few blocks from the birthday party I attended.

I also had an unfinished thought. Those of us who live in the area like the fact that the President enjoys getting out occasionally. Nothing against Bush (he went to the TexMex place down the block from where I used to live). Bush liked eating in.

You can all now return to throwing spitballs at the President and the Post.

@ Jan521977, Pam83, Bcamp55, Karen2009:

Grow up a little. It's a blog, folks. And you apparently haven't noticed that the blog is 44. You know? As in the 44th president? If you're so thick that you can't figure out that a blog about the 44th president may occasionally have items about said president, I suggest you read elsewhere. Or did you simply register so you could whine on the Post's web site? If so, job done. Obama likes getting out in the area occasionally. Those of us who live here

As it happens, the Obama visit got some live mention at a birthday party I attended today in Del Ray. Though I guess they had it a little wrong as they thought he went to the Dreamery (another sensational Alexandria ice cream shop).

Posted by: bruiserND | June 20, 2009 10:33 PM

I strongly object to calling the President the First Father. He is not. He is an employee we hired. What next -- call him the "Dear Leader?"

This is the second time I have seen this term in the Post. Is it a sign of the lack of editing that it remains, or is it blind leader-worship?

Posted by: GABinOdenton | June 20, 2009 10:26 PM

Good choice. I would have had the same exact thing and then wrote about it on Twitter or on a blog or something. Yup. B/C I'm a cool dude too. I take my kids for a nice snack from time to time. Yup. I do, I really do. Change we can believe in!

Posted by: TheDubb | June 20, 2009 10:26 PM

And a final thought for the moment: I like short, light feature stories on topics of interest, particularly on the Web, where they can be thrown onto the site any time during the 24 hour cycle to keep things fresh and add a little levity to a difficult time.

I'm bipartisan about it. I liked the stories about Milly and her puppies. I worried about the Bush's dog Barney when he bit that reporter--was Barney not feeling well or scared? I enjoyed hearing about the time Jaques Chirac tried to warm up American-French relations by kissing Laura Bush's hand and gazing into her eyes, over in Paris.

These are fun stories that take all of 3 minutes to read, are worth a light chuckle, encourage watercooler conversation, and do no harm. They have always been part of the media mix. If you take them out in favor of some grimly humorless relentless treatment of the world's woes, with no variety, no sports, no gardening tips, no comics, etc., you will actually have designed an even LESS successful business model than the modern newspaper, because nobody in the world would buy or read it. A mix of things and tones is appropriate. If you don't like some of them (whether it's silly Obama fluff stories or sports stories or travel pieces), don't read them.

Posted by: fairfaxvoter | June 20, 2009 9:52 PM

I'm so glad that our president is fighting hard to avoid the echo chamber of the "bubble" created by modern White House security. The last thing I want is a leader out of touch with normal American voters, surrounded by yes men and yes women, and isolated from the mood of the nation. This is a huge risk in every presidency and he is smart to avoid it strenuously. I don't want a latter-day Howard Hughes to be running the federal government, as would soon be the case if he stayed restricted to the White House property.

The most recent "complaint" (ie, desperate concocted smear) against this president was that he was "doing too much" and "taking on too many issues." Now the same peanut gallery is saying that "all he does is flit around" and doesn't pay attention to the people's business. Both can't be true, right? In fact, I don't think either is. He's working from morning to evening every day, never gets a full weekend off, and is still taking time to be a good parent. And that's a bad thing why? (That's a rhetorical question. It's actually NOT a bad thing.)

How insensitive, doesn't he know the world is going to heck in a hand basket? And all he does is flitter around with his kids and wife.

Shouldn't a mouthpiece for the Repubs be issuing an outrageous statement to protest? Have they gone soft, lost their voices, turned in to cowards?

As usual, attempts to report the two pieces junior-high vulgarity from goziner (in this case) bounced. Something about my set-up means my e-mails don't get through but produce an error message.

If someone else would report the weird comments about defecation and people's rear ends, and ask that the comments be deleted, I would appreciate it, since kids probably read a story like this and the following comments. Of course they've probably heard similar comments from the playground bully, if they're eight or younger.

I'm so glad they take advantage of the area from time to time. Frozen custard - what a yummy choice!
