Obama Urges Senators to Back Cap and Trade Bill

By Michael D. Shear
President Obama called on senators to disregard what he called the "misinformation" offered by critics of his energy bill, which passed the House of Representatives late Friday night despite GOP predictions that it will further damage the economy.

"We must not be prisoners of the past," he said in his radio and Internet address. "Don't believe the misinformation out there that suggests there is somehow a contradiction between investing in clean energy and economic growth. It's just not true."

Obama congratulated the House for passage of the bill, which would mandate reductions in carbon emissions and allow companies to trade the rights to pollute while lowering overall pollution over the next decades.

The president said the bill's passage is a testament to a changing dynamic in both the scientific community and in the public -- both of which have become far more convinced of the dangers of global warming, he said.

"There is no longer a debate about whether carbon pollution is placing our planet in jeopardy. It's happening," he said. "And there is no longer a question about whether the jobs and industries of the 21st century will be centered around clean, renewable energy. The question is, which country will create these jobs and these industries?"

But Obama appeared to recognize what analysts have been saying for weeks: the bill's passage is far more uncertain in the Senate, where concerns about its impact on the economic recovery are strong.

Critics say it will stifle the economy in part by driving energy costs through the roof. A press release by the Republican National Committee just after its passage in the House said: "House Democrats Ram Through National Energy Tax That Will Cost You Monday Through Friday."

Republican Whip Eric Cantor said in a statement following the House passage, "After a year of higher electric bills, gas prices, and food costs, Americans will remember this vote in 2010."

But White House officials counter that the bill will spur innovation by creating incentives for companies to produce or use cleaner energy. In his address, Obama pointed to several examples in Michigan, Florida and California to support his contention that the bill will create jobs.

"The list goes on and on, but the point is this: this legislation will finally make clean energy the profitable kind of energy. That will lead to the creation of new businesses and entire new industries. And that will lead to American jobs that pay well and cannot be outsourced," Obama said.

The 219-212 victory for Obama in the House was a narrow one in which many Democrats defected to the Republican side, an indication of the difficulties that the legislation still faces.

Obama aides appeared at least a little taken by surprise by the bill's passage.

An earlier version of the radio address was released to reporters at 5:27 p.m. Friday evening, with the usual instructions to hold until 6 a.m. this morning. In that version, the president argued his case for comprehensive health care reform.

But at 8:20 p.m., that version was officially retracted by White House officials, who indicated it would not be posted on the White House website. Twelve minutes later, the version about energy was released.

What most people are not aware of is that this false claim to climate change, global warming and many other buzz words, is actually called Biospheric rift. Its the renaming of Karl Marx theory called Metabolic rift.
What we are watching occur is the implementation of the Hegelian doctrine. This is the same doctrine on which all Progressivism, Socialism and Communism are founded. It is a political and religious doctrine. It is by the constitution, completely illegal, as it is the establishment of laws in respect of a religion. Those of the democratic hegelian party are forcing the remainder of us to accept their religion, through the establishment of law. This is not the will of the people at work, its actually tyrannical forced religion. All of the negative reactions to the column (which are the majority) tell you that the will of the people is not at work here.

"Hello, Mr & Mrs tax payer, consumer, have you ever heard of "Service Charges"."

Yes. And how much have we already paid to fight oil wars?

Posted by: JohnQuimby | June 28, 2009 10:04 PM

Just once, instead of elaborating on the number of jobs that will be created, I would love to see an impact statement. What was the effect on foreign nations that have attempted the Cap and Trade? I have not read one shred of good news showing this will not drive this nation further in debt and jepordize the GDP.

Who will pay the additional cost of companies that have to buy into the authorizations for emissions, Al Gore? Hello, Mr & Mrs tax payer, consumer, have you ever heard of "Service Charges"? This administration is delaying the major taxation that is inevitable throughout this nation through each and everyone of us. Read my lips "no new taxes!" These politicians aren't fooling anyone, it will happen. Unless some think we can live without the major social programs, pensions, retirement, roads, schools, fire, police, medicare and medicaid, and social security we have all come to learn and love. Our county offices are closed half day on Friday's simply due to budget constraints. Vacation pay is not authorized during this period. We have cut our budgets 40% this year thus far. That Stimulus Bill is truly doing a bang up job, thank you Congress and Mr. President. By the way while the nation enjoys a less than 10% unemployment, we're now at 13.1% and rising. Oh, that's right, recovery is right around the corner. Well excuse me if unemployment checks don't pay the mortgage, and the Stimulus bill jobs are no where to be found in our county.

Obama and the Democrats are doing everything in there power to kill American capitalism, with the energy act, the bail outs and now cap and tread, is it because thy can't govern in a free society?

There is a very quick and sure way to cool the Earth. It is called "all out nuclear war among the US, China, India, Pakistan, Germany, France, Brazil, Mexico and any other populous nation you can think of. Of the ones without nukes we will jointly nuke them as a favor. If by now you have not figured this as a sarcasm, good for you. In any case the CO2 will drop to zero the next day, the Earth will freeze, we all will be dead and quit producing the green house gases but we will live in
paradise; no need for cars, food, etc. Hence no CO2. What more do you want???

What B.S. This leftist a__hole doesn't get it. If alternate energy was profitable it would already be selling massively.
These democrat creeps who buy into the manmade global warming scam are about as corrupt as Obama.
What an embarrassment these lowlife pond scum are.

Thank you, tdl62, for pointing out the complicity of General Electric in Obama's scheme to empoverish and enslave us.

Yes, we must keep in mind thad GE has bombarded us with daily propaganda -- through its NBC networks, that includes MSNBC and CNBC -- to make us swallow the scam. Why? Because GE stands to make BILLIONS from the scam at our expense. Not only is GE the largest wind turbine generator maker, but it may benefit as the sole “secondary market” trader of the cap-and-trade credits.

Mainstream media outlets (except for FOX) have become mouthpieces of Obama and his accomplices. They helped our enemies by brainwashing people to get Obama elected and now to get us to believe the most ridiculous fairy tales to get us enslaved.

NOTHING coming out of the mainstream U.S. media is to be trusted.

Posted by: AntonioSosa | June 28, 2009 1:51 PM

Obama's accomplices -- Gore, George Soros, Goldman Sachs, Obama’s Chicago Climate Exchange friends, General Electric, the United Nations, etc. -- have been promoting this hoax to further empower and enrich themselves at our expense and at the expense of our children and grandchildren. That's why they want to force us to swallow this economy killing "energy bill". We must stop them

Posted by: AntonioSosa | June 28, 2009 1:41 PM

Obama and his accomplices are desperate to get their killing done as soon as possible because they know that scientists all over the world, in greater and greater numbers, are speaking out against the moronic man-made global warming/climate change fairy tale.

The House passing of the bill was indeed historic as far as the lies, manipulation, intimidation and bribes used to force the House to pass Obama’s jobs killing, economy killing bill! House members were not even given a chance to read the bill! Corruption and coercion have reached levels previously seen only in Marxist dictatorships like those of Cuba or Venezuela.

Obama’s cap and trade is another giant step towards Marxism — and the corruption, poverty, enslavement, destruction and despair that Marxism entails.

Obama is working much faster than Hugo Chavez at destroying the economy and imposing Marxism. No wonder the Russians are gloating:

From Pravda: “…the American descent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed, against the back drop of a passive, hapless sheeple, excuse me dear reader, I meant people…” http://english.pravda.ru/opinion/columnists/107459-american_capitalism-0

We are NOT hapless sheeple! We must do whatever is necessary to defend ourselves and our children from the Marxist dictatorship that’s being set up in Washington.

GE has started a joint venture called Greenhouse Gas Services, which invests in — and hopes to manage the trade in — greenhouse gas credits. But these investments and this trading floor are of basically NO USE and nearly NO VALUE WITHOUT GOVERNMENT RESTRICTIONS on GREENHOUSE GASES.

Hence the lobbying, buttressed by generous campaign contributions:

Employees and executives gave $1.35 million to politicians in the past election while GE’s political action committee shelled out $1.55 million. About 64 percent of this $2.9 million went to Democrats, with OBAMA easily the TOP recipient of GE money.

Obama’s budget includes the payoff, promising to start a multibillion-dollar greenhouse gas industry by 2012.

In a letter this week, GE’S Immelt told shareholders that current events present an “opportunity of a lifetime,” because “capitalism will be ‘reset.’ ”

Immelt wrote: “The interaction between government and business will change forever. In a reset economy, the government will be a regulator; and also an industry policy champion, a financier, and a key partner.”

Posted by: tdl62 | June 28, 2009 1:07 PM

Obama’s hidden bailout of General Electric

While many companies hire lobbyists to win earmarks, General Electric’s unmatched lobbying force has secured a tax increase — or its equivalent — in President Barack Obama’s budget.

Labeled “climate revenues” and totaling $646 billion over eight years, this line item in Obama’s budget has inspired confidence in GE Chief Executive Officer Jeff Immelt. As Immelt put it in a letter this week, he believes that the Obama administration will be a profitable “financier” and “key partner.”

On page 115 of Obama’s fiscal 2010 budget is Table S-2, titled “Effect of Budget Proposals on Projected Deficits.” The chart forecasts the costs of Obama’s spending proposals and the added revenue of his proposed tax increases. It also forecasts, beginning in 2012, billions of dollars a year in “climate revenues.” This budget line, which has struck fear into some lawmakers from coal-dependent states, could spell salvation for GE in these times of uncertainty.

How can Obama generate “climate revenues”? By forcing companies to pay for the right to emit greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide.

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/politics/Obamas-hidden-bailout-of-General-Electric_03_04-40686707.html

Obama has given the UAW shares of corporations and now the time to repay GE for getting him elected.... Yes we can! pull the wool over the uneducated and make them believe we really care....YES WE CAN...

Those supporters that honestly believe life will be better after 4 years of Obama, I have empathy for each of you...Life as you know it will only get worse....

We are dealing with the most corrupt congress in American History. Where is the outrage??? Has anyone picked up on all of the alternative energy money being funnelled into General Electric---not to mention the billions of payback money to them from the White House. Where is the media reporting on this unprecedented funneling of public money into private businesses? Payback for campaign contributions AND MEDIA BIAS. The American people are being treated with contempt and disregard. Everyone needs to call, or e-mail their representatives and stop our runaway congress....

Cap and trade has already produced a phenomenal success story - who hears about acid rain these days? Cap and trade was passed under the first President Bush and succeeded.

Regardless of whether or not you support the evidence of global warming caused by human activity, what is wrong with cleaning pollution from our air? I'd love to be less reliant on allergy pills and have fewer days when people are advised that the air quality is so bad we should limit our outside activity.

Mindless attacks and spewing quotes from FOX News and right wing radio, who have an agenda (and truth is not part of their agenda), just make you sound uninformed and ignorant. It's just not helpful. All Americans need to learn to think critically about the information they get and the source, do some research and make informed decisions.

If the cap and trade on carbon emissions is as successful as the cap and trade on sulphur emissions was in the 1990s, we will live in a cleaner world.

The troglodytes are out in force! Watch out, Obama. You're ticking off that important constituency, the Moron-Americans.

Posted by: nodebris | June 28, 2009 12:06 PM

If there was a profit to be made in alternate energy, the private sector would be doing it. That is something the leftist A hole in the White House and his corrupt party either fail to realize of just plain deny. I suspect the latter.
These ignorant maggots are bankrupting our country...just like their party has done in California.
Time to wake up America!

Ridiculous. Obama complains of 'misinformation' and then talks about 'carbon pollution'. And THEN he practically DEMANDS that it no longer be debated.

Carbon Dioxide is NOT a 'pollutant', Cap & Trade is a giant TAX that will allow the Government to spend more money, and Obama is nothing but a Clinton-style Liar.

Posted by: cloudshe | June 28, 2009 10:21 AM

Both parties are interchangeable and the SAME THING. I can't believe I fell for it again, I voted for Obama, or against the republicans, I don't know. Now I WILL NEVER, EVER, vote red or blue again, ONLY THIRD PARTY. Wake up America, you will KEEP getting screwed by voting left or right, they both work for the same people!

Posted by: clickron | June 28, 2009 8:53 AM

I knew Obama would be greener that Bush, but I thought he would encourage car pooling and community cleanups, not the largest tax in history. Now I realize the environmental movement was viewed by politicians as another way to scam us out of the last few dollars we have. How despicable. I encourage everyone to THROW OUT those who voted yes on this, they are corrupt!

This bill is nothing more than CAP and TAX!!!!!!! Wake up AMERICA.

Posted by: Jimbo77 | June 28, 2009 8:44 AM

All those (Dems or Reps) who voted for this Kill-America bill are traitors and will be 'former' Congresspersons next time around.

If, in fact, there were already developed and ready-to-use 'green' technologies that could be substituted for traditional energy, the obummerzombies might have an argument. But this is simply a 'tax Americans into poverty' and 'mechanism for exporting the rest of American industry abroad' bill.

Every single post and poster here has completely missed the point.

The whole purpose of "cap-and-trade" is to allow Goldman Sachs to reap Billions on trading profits that this bogus concept will create.

Don't any of you read, or do research?

Good g-d, you people deserve exactly what's coming to you because you are so willfully ignorant of how Wall Street has had its way with you since the Great Depression.

It's not about politics, or Dem vs. Rep, or any of the other drivel posted here. It's purely for GS to make a killing yet again, as they did with the Internet Bubble, the Housing bubble, and lately with the Bailout Bubble.

Why do you think there are so many GS alums entwined in the government's financing apparatus?

Stop, read, and THINK !!!

Cap and trade is fine unless you think individuals have inalienable moral rights.

It amounts to forcibly preventing manufacturers from operating their business as they see fit, then giving them Monopoly money to play with to let them pretend they are still free, are still capitalists, and that we're not trying to roll back the Industrial Revolution. It's a moral, political, and economic abomination.

What would happen if we declared -- because citizens CAN commit murder -- that we should "cap" people's time outside their home to 15 hours per week, and they can "trade" hours if they want to stay outside longer? After all, the less people are free to wander outside their homes, the fewer murders we would have.

There is absolutely no difference in principle between this and CO2 cap and trade. The only reason we don't have such laws is because the Constitution protects individuals. Unfortunately, it does not protect commerce.

The proper way to deal with global warming, if it is indeed happening and is the result of human action, is by means of tort law. Just like with criminal law, business should be free to act until they actually do harm. IF -- and only if -- someone harms you, you sue them, and try to prove it in a court of law. If it's a company, then organize all the victims and sue them as a group. This type of action should be the focus of any attempts to prevent harm to our surroundings, not preemptive laws that violate manufacturer's right to act freely. Such laws are a violation of individual rights and are selling our freedoms and our economic prosperity down the river at the beck and call of the environmentalist lynch mob.

Cap and trade is morally wrong and it should be stopped.

Just for the record: NaCl is salt.

Posted by: danielhancock | June 28, 2009 12:10 AM

Let us assume for argument's sake that global warming proponents are right and that the earth is warming and it is man made.

So it must have taken a long time for that to have happened. I think Al Gore starts with 1856 on his famous graph. Never mind that he makes the horizontal line between 1856 and the present very short to make the increases in temperature seem more dramatic.

Assuming that man (and woman) have caused global warming it can be impled that it will take a long time to reverse it. So then next question is should we try to reverse it or try to adapt to it.

Maybe it would be better to use conventional energy sources until they run out and try to adapt to global warming particularly since China and India are not going to adopt any measures to reduce CO-2 emissions and any efforts that we make will be greatly offset by the CO-2 emissions from India and China. But I guess it is the thought that counts.

Incidentally CO-2 is relatively harmless while CO is poisonous. I think CO-2 is unfairly villified. After all we put catalytic converters on our cars so they would emit CO-2 instead of CO.

Whats next? An attack on NaCl?

MEMO TO POTUS (Attention, David Axelrod, Rahm Emanuel)

The word is DISinformation.

Like the disinformation your team is getting from rogue elements among your security/military/intel agencies and commands...

...which are running a covert, nationwide, vigilante "Gestapo" force -- under the cover of some of the federally-sponsored citizen volunteer agencies that you promote in public service ads.

Such as: Infragard. Citizen Corps. USA on Watch. Among others.

You are being co-opted and misled, Mr. President, as a multi-agency "coordinated action program" -- an extrajudicial targeting and punishment network with federal and local components -- makes a mockery of the rule of law...

...and commits human and civil rights violations with microwave radiation "directed energy weapons" under the false flag of "keeping America safe."

PLEASE, MR. PRESIDENT -- wake up and smell the police state that is co-opting you to become its enabler and mouthpiece:

rankdavis said:

"These are good alternatives to add capacity but they are not a substitute for nuclear and coal power plants. The numbers don't balance unless you pursue increasing all forms of energy production...nuclear, oil, coal, wind, solar."

Good point. You left out reduction in demand through engineered efficiency which is also a legitimate way to ensure more energy from all sources and lower costs to consumers.

We can argue global warming 'till the cows drop dead in a drought. Some will still insist it's all politics and economics.

Very well then, let's add up ALL of the hidden costs of importing oil and see what we're really paying for a gallon of gas.
Make sure to include the cost of the gulf wars and the interest on our foreign trade debt. Did you remember to carry the corporate tax breaks?

Now, let us see how that cost balances against the allegedly "costly and job killing" home-grown alternatives.

If carbon really can be sequestered from coal - as the coal industry says it can - the purpose of cap and trade is to make it pay.

A huge source of clean, domestic energy would be a good thing. Coal could also transition us into hydrogen, which could in turn use existing petroleum delivery systems.

The possibilities are pretty cool.

Only in America will you find people who think they are being patriotic by arguing against efficiency.

"I want to be wasteful! I demand my right to be wasteful! We should preserve our god-given right to use three times more energy per unit of economic output than anyone else in the world! Because it is our wastefulness that makes us special and competitive! It's tyranny for our elected officials to pass laws encouraging efficiency! Only Nazis or Communists would encourage efficiency! We want waste! We want waste! The dirtier, the better!"

If you all ever find your way out of that paper bag you're stuck in, let us know.

The United States is the only first world country with a pack of mouth breathers that rejects the well thought out, well supported almost and almost unanimous opinion of world scientific community.

Of course, this same bunch also believes that the Grand Canyon was carved by Noah's flood, Obama was born in Kenya, the sun revolves around the earth and the WMD were moved to Syria.

Go to www.petitionproject.org, you will find that this is not settled science. 30,000 US scientists have signed a petition against the findings of the IPCC.

This mantra is no more than a way to suppress different opinions. Insinuate all you want that those that have the audacity to disagree with you are stupid. The fact is that those that question and do not just accept the popular line fed to them are the intelligent ones.

A trip to the NOAA web site would show you that we have been thru this cycle a number of times. Of course watching Al Gore's movie is easier or see what Rosie O'Donnell or Barbera Streisand thinks, that whole idea of research sounds like work.
That the only support of you views you can come up with is to denigrate those you disagree with shows your ignorance.
To question is the bedrock of science, to suppress dissent or to deamonize those with competing ideas is not only ignorant it is dangerous.

Great posts below against this bill. But, is Obama even legally "President"? I would hope that someone with standing to challenge this law (if it passes the Senate) also challenges Obama's legal capacity to sign it into law.

Death knell for manufacturing and 1300 pages worth of regulation on freedom to use energy for domestic and industrial use.

The idiots in Congress can only think of how to make you pay astronomical prices for everything from gasoline to electricity,, while sending our jobs overseas. With all the unemployed we have here now, how in the blazes does this Congress think that these huge increases in cost are going to be paid for? Oh yes, we'll pass the debts down to our children and grandchildren. In all my 81 years, I have never seen such ignorance on the part of an (intelligent?) president and a Congress that does not read a bill that they have approved! Absolutely disgusting! Lets make sure that we note who these legislators are (Republican and Democrat), and vote them out of office....sooner rather than later!

Since Dems attack others how's this: Pelosi wants to lower "toxic" emissions, right? Then the b1tch should use less than a gallon of botox each month. God, that woman looks like a dance partner for the Mummy.

That's rights liberals - attack the person not the position.

Another bills passes and not one who voted in favor of it - read it...C'mon Dems?...Change you can believe in? We are hosed. hopefully the sentate will come to its senses on this piece of garbage...How many carbons were generated just to create this bill........Dem's - please - you cant really be in support of this - can you?...

This bill is hubris for the pathetic, nearly extinct elephant. This is the final legacy of the Bush dynasty - a Democratic rubber-stamp Congress.

The shrill, repetitive, moralizing messengers of right-wing paranoia like Hannity and Limbaugh have destroyed the Republican Party.

Posted by: alance | June 27, 2009 11:07 AM

This bills main purpose is to make energy cost so much that people cant afford to use much of it. That is in the bill, in a more leagle gobldygook way but that is one of the stated purposes. THE purpose.

It says the "green" energy must ammount to 20% of our energy produced. That still leaves the bulk of our energy coming from regular means. 20% is the goal and in order to do it OUR president and the socialist in congress are going to send up to the poor house. Just think of how many poor in America will die next winter and in the following summers and winters because they can't afford heat in the north and airconditioning in the south.

Logic, not retoric dictates that the price of gas and diesel is going to skyrocket past the $4.00 of 2007. That is in the bill also. The republicans tried to put a measure in the bill that would suspend the cap and trade on gas and diesel when it reached $5.00 a gallon but the soviet socialist democrats would have none of it. They want a gallon of gas to cost $8.00 or more. Some of you on this board have said the very same thing.

Think about this: If gas and diesel were $8.00 a gallon what would a gallon of milk, that had to be raised using a diesle tractor, hauled to the processing plant using a diesel truck, processed by a company that was BUYIING carbon credits and then hauled to the retail store in a diesel truck... a retail store that was paying 4 x or electricity to stay open than what they are now ..... how much would that gallon of milk or loaf of bread, or diaper, or medicine cost .... probably 4x what it cost now ... at least. There would be 4 spots from the farmer to the retail store where the price would have to increase in order for the trucking company, the farmer, the processor, the trucking company hauling the finished product and then the retailer to make a profit .... all passed on to you, we the people of the United States of America ... not to mention the new taxes this administration will be adding in the years to come..

This bill will not make us more secure. This bill will not create but kill jobs (in all the countries it has been tried it kills 2.5 jobs for every "green" job. This bill will only make us poorer and weaker. .... and it will not change the temperature of the planet even a fraction of a degree ... no effect what so ever. THAT is the worst part. Real science show it will do NOTHING to effect the climat.

We won't be able to burn coal even though we have a 200+ year supply of the stuff; it is now going to be taxed out of existence. And when it's gone, what is going to replace it?

Can't dam a river for hydro-electric power. It's nearly impossible to get EPA approval to build a dam anymore, the environmentalists will have you tied up in court for decades.

The U.S. invented nuclear power and gave it to the rest of the world, who gave the technology to their scientists and engineers. The U.S. turned and gave the technology to our lawyers. According to the U.S. Dept of Energy, the last reactor built was the "River Bend" plant in Louisiana. Its construction began in March of 1977. This country hasn't built a new nuclear power plant in 30 years.

T. Boone Pickens made billions in the energy industry and he is totally committed to transitioning to next generation power sources. He is about as non-partisan as they come and he gives his advice freely to both parties. I watched the presentation he gives to anyone in industry or politics that will listen. I like the part where he gets to the bio fuels, wind and solar power.

He says you can plant corn from the Mississippi to the Pacific ocean and you will not offset enough oil use to stop foreign imports. And even if the U.S. sprouts windmills like mushrooms and carpets miles of the western states with solar panels you still only offset a small percentage of our energy needs and it isn't a stable power source because the sun and wind aren't "on" 100% of the time.

These are good alternatives to add capacity but they are not a substitute for nuclear and coal power plants. The numbers don't balance unless you pursue increasing all forms of energy production...nuclear, oil, coal, wind, solar.

Congress wants us to believe if we just pay hundreds of billions of dollars in new taxes every year they will "save the planet" and everything will be fine.

Personally, I think the more likely outcome will be that American industries move overseas or shut down and unemployment will go higher and last longer.

But that clearly is not important to the Dems in office. Why do we think this would bother Congress? They just voted on a 1500 page bill than none of them have read. All they need to hear is that there are billions to be made from all the new "eco-constituents" that this tax bill creates.

This pattern of Dems jamming through insanely huge pieces of legislation that nobody has even read and with little to no debate is the only thing that appears "transparent" with this new administration -- it's transparent that everyone sees the BS clearly for what it is.

Can't wait for the 2010 mid-term elections...

"There is no longer a debate about whether carbon pollution is placing our planet in jeopardy. It's happening,""....Thats why most countries w/ a cap and trade system are abandoning them....as even more of the scientific community is backing away from the man made carbons. We are so hosed with this Lib..Him, Pelosi - Reid..Can you imagine - the 3 stooges are running this country. Cap n Trade = TAX..Universal healthcare = TAX, etc, etc.....

“We must not be prisoners of the past”
We must be prisoners of a community organizer in way over his head

"Don't believe the misinformation out there that suggests there is somehow a contradiction between investing in clean energy and economic growth. It's just not true."

New jobs when ? How many windmill builders do we need ? Will they outweigh the jobs lost

"There is no longer a debate about whether carbon pollution is placing our planet in jeopardy. It's happening," he said

Do you mean Global warming? No debate? Will other countries fall in line? Will this give them an unfair advantage in the manufacturing sector?

Obama aides appeared at least a little taken by surprise by the bill's passage.

I couldn’t believe it either.

It's interesting that Australia and countries in Europe are moving away from their cap and tax systems! They've found it inefficient and costly.

The only one who benefited where the investors who traded the cap and tax financial instruments.

Wake up America, you are about to pay more for a system already proven not to work!!!

VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THEIR ARROGANCE; THEIR FAILURE TO EVEN READ THE BILL; THE WILLINGNESS TO STICK THEIR CONSTIUENTS WITH A BILL BASED ON JUNK SCIENCE. PLEASE FOLKS, LET US RETURN THE FAVOR IN NOVEMBER 2010!!

“Dear Congress,
You Cap Us,
We Trade You.
Love,
Your Boss”*

*This is from Scrappleface, but totally agree with the message. Where is the hard facts science that says the earth is warming – other than from Al Gore who had difficulty getting through divinity school (oh, excuse me – now that the earth is cooling, we now call it ‘CLIMATE CHANGE)?? What does the Congress have against jobs in America? Have they given any thought to the impact of their actions on American business? China and India must be laughing their heads off at the idiocy in Washington, DC!!

The bottom line is Liberals in their Arrogance and Stunning Ignorance believe they can control the Planet's Natural Cooling and Warming Cycle. And their method is to Destroy the Economy, Limit Growth and Weaken the Nation. Their true motive has nothing to do with the Fantasy of Global Warming, its to destroy Capitalism. The Asinine Stupidity of Liberals is way beyond belief.

I have come up with a way to save some money to help pay my electric bill. I live in an area where curbside trash pickup is optional. I will cancel it and burn my garbage. I will also convert my clean burning propane fireplace back to wood burning. They can stick my carbon footprint up their a**

Posted by: jamba | June 27, 2009 9:45 AM

Actually the 219 - 212 vote was not as close as it appears. Democrats had the votes and it was just a matter of allowing the most vulnerable Democrats to cast a no vote to provide political cover. Most of the forty four Democrats that voted no could have voted yes if the leadership needed their votes.

I think I heard that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said that this bill has little support in the Senate. I doubt if he wants any part of it because he is up for re-election in 2010. This could lead to a conflict between him and the President.

It is also possible that moderate Democrats will convince the President not to push this bill because it is toxic to them in the upcoming 2010 election. But I have been wrong every time I thought the President would not push a specific wacko idea.

Posted by: danielhancock | June 27, 2009 9:34 AM

Oh yeah. This ridiculous bill, if it becomes law, will create more jobs. The solar panels, wind-turbines and other electro-mechanical devices will be made in China; while Americans can work at lower-level jobs assembling the items for what will be temporary jobs until the device is installed.
Obama never worked at anything where he was under time-constraints, unlike most lawyers working at a firm, or building a damn thing.

Posted by: sperrico | June 27, 2009 9:20 AM

What is the problem??? What planet do you live on??? Is earth suddenly melting??? The problem is Obama is not telling everyone what it costs, and as it is, there's NO MONEY in the bank.

WAKE UP, AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would you go out and buy a fancy water filter for your sink if you couldn't pay the electric bill? That's what he's doing with OUR bank account. The government is YOU and ME and EVERY American in this country. When did we plant the money tree? When did we give up our place as the leader of the free world?

I'm sick and tired of Obama not doing the job of the PRESIDENT. No excuses, and I'm sick of hearing how great and clean it's going to be. Wouldn't Utopia be nice? Of course! That's the problem. It's HIS Utopia! And this is still America, not Utopia! He should go help some underdeveloped country, if he wants to try out his left-wing polictics. He's the LEAST AMERCIAN PERSON I can think of, and he's destroying America.

When 800 Republican contributor auto dealers were put out of business (including some of the largest and most profitable) it was perfectly obvious we are in the hands of a thug and under the control of a fascist thuggish Democrat party. These dealers did nothing wrong, but they lost everything, their businesses, their homes, their children's College education and their retirement. How do we think they must feel seeing their Democrat competitors still in business because they gave bribes to the Democrats?

This is what the energy bill is about, bribes for energy licenses (the so called cap) -- plenty for Democrats, peanuts for Republicans unless they bribe the Democrats too. The Environmenetalists love it because they want people out of cars and on bicycles and on foot. The Democrats love it because it puts an end to free enterprise and requires political influence (i.e. big contributions) to get a "cap" large enough to survive. This is how Obama will bankrupt the coal industry and shut down 50% of the electrical utilities who depend on coal.

Here in Europe, countries adopted a mild form of this scheme called the Kyoto Protocols in 2005. The result in the great majority of the cases was a double digit INCREASE in CO2 emissions. Why? Capping energy use means stopping industrial activity. Politicians did not want to be voted out of office because it was obvious the costs of everything would skyrocket. Elderly people would freeze to death, families would suffer from lack of food, the poor would not be able to afford shelter, people would go live on the streets, and in parts of the world there were food riots. Raising trillions of dollars this way is the second reason for the energy bill.

What about renewable power and "green" jobs? Even Denmark (with the world's largest percentage of wind power) knows that even if the entire country was covered with windmills, it could not produce as much power as a single coal power plant and would cost four times as much. Neither would exist without subsidies.

What about controlling the climate by reducing man's CO2 emissions? This is like believing in the tooth fairy. The whole argument is based on observations from 1975 to 1998 when temperatures were rising, but if you do the same analysis for 1940 to 1975 or from 1998 to the present, the earth cooled in the face of CO2 increases. Plus, the computer models which the climate alarmists use have never given forecasts that were even close to reality. So, the alarmists say "believe us, the earth is warming even though the measurements say it is cooling." Orwell would be proud.
