Axelrod Won't Rule Out Tax Increase

By Michael D. Shear

President Obama's top political adviser refused today to rule out the possibility that the White House might agree to a tax hike on health insurance plans that would hit middle-income Americans.

Speaking on ABC's "This Week" program, David Axelrod declined to repeat Obama's "firm pledge" during the campaign that families making under $250,000 will not see "any form of tax increase, not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes."

Instead, Axelrod said the president has no interest in "drawing lines in the sand" on the issue of how to pay for the costly health reform plan making its way through Congress.

"One of the problems we've had in this town is that people draw lines in the sand and they stop talking to each other. And you don't get anything done," Axxelrod said. "That's not the way the president approaches this."

Axelrod insisted that Obama is "very cognizant of protecting people -- middle class people, hard-working people who are trying to get along in a very difficult economy." And he promised that the president "will continue to represent them" in negotiations with Congress over health reform.

He also repeated Obama's preference for a cap on the deductions that people making over $250,000 can take on their taxes as a way to pay for health care changes.

But under repeated questioning from host George Stephanopoulos, Axelrod said the White House is open to "a lot of different formulations" for paying for health care reform.

He also waded into the ongoing questions about the Iranian elections, dismissing the harsh words about U.S. meddling from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as "bloviations that are politically motivated."

Axelrod also appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press," where he ducked questions about South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's bizarre behavior and defended the administration's decision to coordinate with a reporter in advance of a news conference to ask a question posed by an Iranian.

"I'm very comfortable with what we did," he said.

On CNN, Gen. Ray Odierno, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, said he believes the Iraqi military forces are ready to take over from American soldiers in the country's biggest cities.

The handover takes place on Tuesday even as there have been several very large attacks in the country that have killed scores of Iraqis.

"I do believe they're ready," Odierno told John King, host of "State
of the Union." "They've been working towards this for a long time. And
security remains good. We've seen constant improvement in the security force, we've seen constant improvement in governance. And I believe this is the time for us to move out of the cities and for them to take ultimate responsibility."

Madoff gets 150 years for his ponzi scheme and the treasury bails out Goldman Sachs for theirs.

Ain't it great to have government in bed with capital?

All you have to do is mention "Taxes" or "Climate Change" and Boom! The morons start typing like mad. Those two issues are red meat to the least informed among us.

One of the problems in this town is that politicains make promises that they have NO intention of keeping and spending other people's money...
"The One" has carried this trait to a new extreme...He and his Democrat cohorts never met a tax they didn't like and Cap and Trade is one of the worst, non- productive taxes in the game. Too bad so many Americans are too stupid to see and understand what their politicains are doing TO THEM instead of FOR them and the country. Obama is a great one for looking you in the eye while saying one thing and doing another. We have four years to look forward to his lies and the Dems raping this country...

Here's a couple of thoughts.

(1) Write your posts in a text editor and then copy into the comment window. Also, disconnect your computer from networks until you're ready to post.

(2) Assuming your views are not delusional, buy a cheap netbook and never ever ever hook it up to a network. Copy files only to a keychain drive which will then be connected to a computer

(3) Get a Mac.

If this nation were a laboratory, it would indeed have been interesting to keep federal spending at 2007 levels, and deny George W. Bush, Hank Paulson and Ben Bernanke the deficit spending they desperately sought toward the end of Bush's eight year nightmare.

Fortunately, though our elected leaders are not perfect, most of them are unwilling to treat us as lab rats.

By the way - the American people elected Barack Obama president. There was no confusion about this.

Some people seem very unhappy with that outcome, and would like to *create* confusion.

Those people don't like to abide by the results of elections. And a lot of them are stockpiling guns.

Like the guy in Pittsburgh who delusionally thought Obama was going to take away his guns. He killed three policemen. His name was Poplawski.

Need I cite more examples?

Let's go item by item.

"Higher health care taxes". Those would be what?

"Reduced social security benefits". Please provide details.

"Continued offshoring of jobs". This one's especially charming - where's that in the president's proposals?

"plenty of bailout money for bankers" - have you forgotten how to type "George W. Bush" so soon?

Answer up, propagandist.

What do you think the energy bill was about? Cap&Tax. Health care reform = tax. Stimulus = tax on grand kids. Dumbocrats believe transferring money from your wallet to Washington solves every problem. In a way it does...you become a serf of the state, dependent on the dole of politicians, unable to fund a job or pay your bills without connections to the political class. It's exactly what they want. However, what they get might be closer to Honduras or Iran..

What's at issue here is an effort by Democrats to provide health insurance to people who work and whose employers don't provide it.

The poor who don't work already have the best health insurance plan in the USA - Medicaid.

When those working people who don't have health insurance are hospitalized, they are charged somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 to 50 per cent more for every procedure and every day in a hospital bed, than people who have health insurance.

It bankrupts them.

I wish that every Republican who posts here in opposition to the president's health care proposals would say right up front, "I'm sorry, but if you work at a grocery store, my plan is that you get no health care."

Don't wait for that level of honesty.

They just passed the largest tax increas in American history wiht out even a wimper form the left wing nut jobs. The reason is no one has actually seen how far and deep this will go yet. The democrats have it so convoluted that it will take a couple of months for anyone to have time to review it and see what it says and how it will effect the American public at large. Most of the middle class won't take government handouts like you.

Posted by: charlietuna666 | June 28, 2009 6:52 PM

Republicans - today's batch not being know for their acumen - miss the point of this article. Obama is telling Congress he is willing to listen to any suggestion, though it may not be his preferred option, and though in the end he may be unwilling to accept it.

His other option is to tell Congress, "It's my way or the highway".

To exercise that other option would be stupid, and one thing President Obama is not, is stupid.

So he has a choice. He can use his office in an intelligent way, as he is doing now, or he can make it absolutely impossible for dull-witted Republicans to charge him with violating a campaign promise, and govern stupidly.

Why am I not surprised that the Republicans in our midst insist that he govern stupidly?

Obama misled or lied to win enough votes to be elected president. What's new? Some candidates and incumbent presidents have been deceiving or outright lying to try to win elections since at least Wilson during the 1916 campaign. Franklin Roosevelt followed in 1940, Johnson in 1964, Nixon in 1968, Bush I in 1988, Clinton in 1992.

One problem with most politicians and pundits is with their six figure or higher incomes, they have very little, if any understanding of how most of us cope with bills, inflation, trying to save enough money, limited income, etc.

The Obama/Democratic Congress agenda may be financially disastrous for most people receiving less than about $100,000 a year.
Combine higher energy costs, if the climate bill is enacted, likely high inflation because of recent fiscal and monetary policies, an expensive health care mandate with manifestly inadequate subsidies, taxes on employer provided health care, reductions in Medicare spending, the result is very likely to be significantly lower living standards for most people in this country.

Posted by: Aprogressiveindependent | June 28, 2009 5:15 PM

This is from the Boston Globe:

"Since President Obama’s stimulus plan to trigger job creation was passed, the economy has shed 1.6 million jobs. The administration has focused instead on its estimate that the stimulus has created or saved 150,000 jobs."

If this keeps up, taxes for everyone will come IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER. Econ 101 says: if gov't is broke, raise taxes, period, and that's regardless if it's republican or democrat.

Posted by: recharged95 | June 28, 2009 4:30 PM

Oh, so Obama lied during the campaign.

Knock me over with a feather. NOT.

2010 can't come soon enough.

Posted by: WashingtonDame | June 28, 2009 4:29 PM

The evil axis of the insurance companies, the drug companies and the American Medical Association is pulling out all the stops to defeat any public health care program.
They have a license to steal and they do not want it revoked. They will not go quietly.
Their representatives in the senate in both parties will kick and scream all the way to the final vote. Big money is being spent on television, radio and newspapers to convince people that this country can't afford decent health care for all it's citizens. I wouldn't be surprised if some of it wasn't being spent to pay people to post in this forum.

I wouldn't mind being taxed by the Federal Government if I (me, myself AND I) got something valuable and tangible in return. Mostly, the money simply disappears outta my paycheck to be used to fund ill-advised wars, welfare for favored, sole-source government contractors (e.g. Halliburton, Kellogg-Brown-Root), to finance debt obligations to the Red Chinese, to bailout perpetrators of high dollar FRAUD who, the government believes, should not be prosecuted, and to fund government programs that permit FRAUD to occur and recur and which do not deliver on their promises (e.g. Medicare, Social Security). Government's managers should stop arguing and start delivering.

MEMO TO D. AXELROD: POTUS IS BEING CO-OPTED AND MISLED FROM WITHIN

POTUS is being co-opted into being the pitchman for a federally-enabled "multi-agency coordination action" program of nationwide extrajudicial targeting and punishment...

...a vigilante Gestapo that is misusing federally-funded volunteer programs to subvert the rule of law -- persecuting, harassing and stalking unjustly targeted citizens and families with covertly implanted GPS devices.

This secretive multi-agency "program" also misuses government surveillance operations to censor, and maliciously tamper with, the telecommunications of these "targets."

An array of "programs of personal financial destruction" decimates the finances of "target" families -- contributing to economic chaos. And microwave "directed energy weapons" are being used to degrade their very lives -- a gross violation of human rights.

And no authorities will investigate -- using the "Gulag" tactic of dismissing those who raise their voices as "delusional."

Please, Team Obama: Wake up and smell the police state that is co-opting your administration and making POTUS a pitchman for an American Gestapo.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

So much for telling the truth. The liar wins and the truth teller loses.

Liberals - please comment. Please comment on the "transparency" pledge. Please comment on the firing of the Inspector General that was on Obama crony Kevin Johnson's tail. Democrats want watch dogs and regulators until they don't like what the watch dogs/regulators tell them.

Obama is coming out in support of the deposed Honduran President that defied a Supreme Court ruling.

This administration is downright corrupt. No wonder they are trying to force garbage legislation through Congress now. They will be so unpopular soon, they won't have a chance.

Killing off seniors because some beancounter in Washington said so is sure hardcore Chicago politics of punishing those who didn't vote you, while on the other hand unions not having to pay healthcare taxes while non-workers making the same amount would have to pay those taxes is just showing how the "change" from Washington politics to Chicago politics is taking things from bad to worse. Killing off the elderly because they're too expensive reminds me of Logan's Run.

Posted by: sperrico | June 28, 2009 1:42 PM

Well of course he won't rule out tax increases, the lords of money would be very displeased by that. The only problem is, if you bleed the American public dry, whether through taxes or inflation, to the point of idiotically disrupting the motor of American commerce and prosperity, then you have no host body to sap and feed upon. No matter what scenario you play out, it all simply ends by demonstrating conclusively the fundamental error of selfishness, and no amount of rolling over and monetizing will stave off the ultimate failure of the scheme.

Posted by: hrow | June 28, 2009 1:39 PM

We tried to tell them and they would not listen. Obama told them in an article I read today to not listen to people about the cap and tax bill, but to "...listen to me!" Why would anyone listen to him since all he has done is tell lies. How stupid does he think we are. Even those who voted for him are not THAT stupid!! Obama should be tried for treason! Who do we get to do that? The elections will be so rigged in 2010 we may not be able to get rid of anyone!

No one in their right mind ever bought into the Obama campaign lies about tax cuts. Obama appeals to uneducated, naive and self-centered children who look to the government to bail them out for their ignorant decisons. Just as little children must sometimes learn the hard way that bad choices lead to bad consequences, now the mental-defectives who voted for Obama will have to learn a hard lesson in economics. The so-called "tax cut" for "95% of taxpayers" is about to be replaced by a massive increase in medicare taxes, plus taxes on health benefits, plus a projected 97% increase in home electric bills, $6/gal. gasoline and such benefits as rationed medical care and the complete denial of health care to persons over age 75. yessir, your drooling libs sure must be proud.
