Obama Responds to Growing Criticism of Recovery Act

By Michael D. Shear
President Obama, still traveling abroad, responded to increasing criticism that the Economic Recovery Act that he pushed through Congress is not working to prevent job losses in a still-struggling economy.

In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama said those critics -- which include many GOP leaders in Congress -- have little credibility.

"When we passed this Recovery Act, there were those who felt that doing nothing was somehow an answer," he said. "Today, some of those same critics are already judging the effort a failure although they have yet to offer a plausible alternative."

The criticism has become intense as job losses have continued to grow.

In his own Republican radio address, House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (Va.) expressed for many Republicans the concerns in stark, partisan language.

"Remember the promises? They promised you that if you paid for their stimulus, jobs would be created immediately," Cantor said. "In fact, they said that unemployment would stay under eight percent. Yet just months later, they are telling us to brace for unemployment to climb over ten percent. They promised jobs created. Now they scramble to find a way to play games with government numbers by claiming jobs saved."

To that sentiment, Obama responded that critics need to have patience. He countered that his administration never promised immediate results, but always counseled that it would take time.

"As I made clear at the time it was passed, the Recovery Act was not designed to work in four months -- it was designed to work over two years," Obama said, adding later that: "This is a plan that will also accelerate greatly throughout the summer and the fall. We must let it work the way it's supposed to, with the understanding that in any recession, unemployment tends to recover more slowly than other measures of economic activity."

The debate is likely to continue when Obama returns from his week-long trip abroad. Administration officials forecast that the unemployment rate is likely to spike to above 10 percent -- a double-digit figure that is sure to generate more criticism.

Obama is not working for us. He's working for our enemies. He's siding with Castro, Chavez, Zelaya and against the rule of law and the human rights of Hondurans.

As his parents, relatives, friends and mentors, Obama is a Marxist who hates the U.S. As such, he sides with Marxist dictators and would-be dictators who seek to enslave their countries and destroy the U.S.

He's destroying the U.S. economy and will destroy our children's and grandchildren's future with his socialized health care system and his cap and trade Ponzy scheme.

No wonder the Russians are gloating. As per Pravda, “…the American descent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed, against the back drop of a passive, hapless sheeple … and “The final collapse has come with the election of Barack Obama.” http://english.pravda.ru/opinion/columnists/107459-american_capitalism-0

As Alan Keyes said, "Obama is a radical communist and we are either going to stop him or the U.S. will cease to exist."

Earth to Republicans...... the cancer that was the Bush/Cheney administration that was allowed to spread unchecked for the past 8 years cannot be cured overnight, nor in 6 months time. It's time for Republicans to GROW UP, act like adults for a CHANGE, and except their responsiblity for this HUGE mess we're in now, and be part of the solution - quit being the damn problem! Whine whine whine.... The only thing Republican leaders are interested in right now is working against Democrats (who are actually trying to get this country back on its feet), by badmouthing Democrats every time they open their mouths - for one thing - to get Republicans elected in 2012. THAT'S ALL THEY CARE ABOUT. Not YOU, not our COUNTRY, just THEMSELVES and POWER GRABBING. Look how well their power grab worked for the country the past 8 years. Face Reality for a CHANGE Repubs! And tell Rush to stick a dirty sock in it. What a pathetic piece of crap he is.

Obama can't even bring the troops home - that would ADD to the unemployment in this country. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

It appears as though the Big O did learn something while at Chicago ... economies tend to be cyclical...

So, "in any recession" ... nice. So since his plan isn't working the way he sold it it's become "any [old] recession" that we need time to recover from.

We could have gotten that much from a chimp!

normally it takes 2 years before a new admin gets over the effects of the last. We have to recover form the War for OIl and Haliburton,
and the Real Estate BURST Bubble and the Wall Street shadow market hedge bets that created bad loans and then pushed them to fail.
I FULLY EXPECT RECOVERY TO BEGIN IN SPRING 2010 FROM THE 2007 RECESSION turned to a late 2008 DEPRESSION..
though a lot does depend on how well the LOCALS INVEST/ use THE stimulus.
- USA make sure your STATE invests in job creation !!!!!!!!!! fix the broken programs and services so they really do give a hand up not a hand out.
stop wasting time on complaining and chicken little predictions.
Get to work and make sure your govt works for you. !!!!!!

President Barack Obama, is doing his best in the short 6 months he has been in office. Give him a break. After what the 43rd. Pres. and Vice pres. left all sorts of political, financial, and housing markets, as well as he managed to undo the positive standing that we had in the (bank) and spend it as if it were their own to just spend as they like. It was not theirs it was and still is the tax payers of America. Our 44th President also inherited not one war from the prior 43rd. but Two major wars. He is trying as best as he is able to do what is right for this country. I had been sadly a Republican for years. President Barack Obama opened my eyes. I had some contact with he as well as his wife while they were on the campain trail. They did not know I was a Republican, They did not ask and I did not say. But the answers I received from them personally, told me all I had to know. That is that he would be the best choice to get us out of this mess, and I know I am still right 6 months later. Also, I know I will still be right 8 years from now. He is and has been doing his best. But we have to remember that he is still dealing with some people in Washington that are stuck on Stupid!

What is the difference between a rich republican and a rich democrat? Both pay high taxes. The Republican is watching out for his self interest and the democrat believes what is best for all is also best for himself. "Country First" is a DEMOCRATIC notion.

What is the difference between a POOR dem and a POOR repub? They both pay little taxes. The POOR republican is just foolish puppet of the rich republican. Hooked on socail issues that the rich pretend to care about.

Inherited? Yes Obama inherited his OWN parties’ irresponsible actions and the incompetent Democrats who controlled FNMA who turned a mortgage program into a welfare program and pressured, backed, profited and signaled for years to others that these loans were OK.
Add to that, the rising energy cost that made the cost of EVERYTHING rise along with it and helped push those tenuous loans off the cliff.
Who blocked ALL new practical energy sources for years? Democrats!
Yes Obama you inherited this crisis from the actions and inaction of your Democrat accomplices who were the Catalyst of this crisis.

Obama/Pelosi as President now is as comforting as finding out your plane is going into the Hudson and Britney Spears is at the controls.

SURPLUS TO DEFICIT UNDER BUSH CHENEY
8 YEARS OF STUPIDITY

Bush and cheney took a strong U.S. economy and killed it!!! Under bush and cheney for the past 8 years the U.S. spent Trillions and Trillions of dollars. It was "hard work" to spend so much money borrowed from China in just 8 short years, but they did it!!! Our children's children will be paying for the stupidity of the bush administration for generations to come.

OBAMA STIMULUS PACKAGE
ECONOMIC RECOVERY

We all want the economic recovery to go as fast as possible, but let's get something straight...

The U.S. can't spend Trillions of dollars for 8 years, kill a strong economy and expect a 6 month turnaround.

After just 6 months with Obama in office Republican Whip Eric Cantor wants everything to be Rosy and Wonderful?

The Far-To-The-Right, Foaming-At-The-Mouth, Nutjob Republicans who spent 8 years spending money like a bunch of drunken sailors need to understand that 8 years of stupidity can't be reversed in 6 months. Change is going to take a little time.

The Republicans who are criticizing Obama's economic recovery program are hypocritical and unjust. As an ex-Republican I found it obvious that the Republican party has offered nothing in any way to help in this economic downturn. In fact, they were, to a great extent, the cause of it because of their laisse faire attitude and lack of government control and regulation. The economic downturn would have been a lot worse if nothing had been done. In fact, our countries financial/economic system could have collapsed. Obama does not justify being criticized and in fact should be complimented on the actions taken. The Republicans have offered nothing in the way of any corrective measures. All they are capable of doing is to criticize. They are the epitome of hypocrasy

The economy is in the tank and what is really being done as we sink into quick sand. Since around 1998 I have promoted developing technology parks in Missouri and this spring around 15 state representatives were on board. I even pushed for a bill that would allow all industrial parks to be changed in name and concept to technology parks. Indiana passed similar law a few years ago that allows cities to apply to establish as Tech Parks. www.technologypark2006.org and www.nonewtaxes.4t.com are websites with information on the issue.

We have the problem of not having a national economic plan, or transportation like rail, and environmental plans. Does global economy (our wages lowering while theirs rise), and service industry (we do not make things they come form overseas), ring a bell? We need new innovations to start making products of the future now. Can our government say emergency? It is going to take more than a few road projects and giving money to banks (like Bank of America that is so bloated they do not know how to help save people in trouble). Hello, we have problems of the magnitude that I think we may end up seeing 50 separate states if we do not wake up. Companies are saying hire no more get by with what we can. VP Joe Biden does get it!

Obama, did indeed promise us that this stimulus would create Jobs - Immediately. As a matter of fact, he said that with "this" bill, job losses would cap at 8%; he was wrong.

The only thing left to do is to stop spending on this wasted effort and put the money back into the public coffers.

To JohnQuimby you are so right in your assessments.

Not to mention the instant answers and solutions the "child' in us demands. Surely, not even the best 'magician' among us can fix the severe economic problems created over the last eight years. Therefore to expect President Obama to clear up such a mess in six months-- ridiculous!!
But knowing how impatient we are, I can only say that most of us fully realize we are worst of now than we were eight years ago, and Obama had nothing to do with that. So despite our impatience and demands, he must apply the needed medicine. What we have experienced/seen as the cause of this recession should never, ever happen again.

Am I among the cry babies? Possibly? ButI still believe the President is honestly seeking to do more than using a band aid to fix a rotten situation. And on that, he shows great leadership. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhwPssa8-sc

Back in the day when your daddy owned a garage or had a union job, your momma stayed home to raise you, your house was paid for and you had a nice new Chevy in the driveway. You weren't rich but you had enough.

Your parents helped you through school and saved a modest amount of money to send you to a public University.

If your daddy was a farmer, he could sell a few dozen hogs in the fall and buy a new truck.

They weren't rich but they had enough.

Now you can't get a job with benefits like overtime pay for extra hours of work, or a health plan you can count on or a retirement pension you earned so that you could take care of yourself and not burden your children. And you'd need a thousand hogs to make any money.

You're still not rich and you don't even have enough to get the same for yourself or your children. And you wonder why.

I'm not looking for a handout or freebies from the governemnt. That's fiction and drivel from desperate middle class whites who've seen their place in our country eroded by outsourced jobs and class warfare raised up as progress.

How did you conservative and independent middle class working folks do under conservative government? Are you better off today? I know the answer.

If you're a small farmer or a small business person - you're on the endangered species list.

Obama's the only president since I can remember who's trying to help US. I'll give him some time to sort it out because I don't have hope for anyone else. And I don't believe that one more tax cut for corporate executives is going to help me.

You seem to have forgotten: The President, who heads up the executive branch (which is the branch of government that spends all that money approved by the budget) draws up the budget for congressional approval. In the eight years of Bush's presidency, Congress failed to trim down his budget requests. They also granted him trillions in funds he requested but never included in the budget (for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan).

You also seem to be very confused. Yes, stocks rose a lot during Bush's presidency. This is the exact bubble you were talking about, as opposed to the steady growth under Clinton, at least outside of the .com sector (which screwed itself over). Companies were immensely profitable during Bush's reign, yet unemployment continued to rise, and so did costs! In the health sector alone, insurance costs doubled while companies' profits quadrupled.

Like it or not, the rise in stocks during Bush's reign were the bubble you speak of, fueled only by deregulation and shady business practices. The billions those companies earned went to shareholders and executives even while they were "trimming the fat."

What you all don't seem to accept is that Bill Clinton left this country in great shape. There was very little for George Bush to do other than maintain. Instead, Bush decided to do everything opposite of what Clinton did and we see the result. Now, President Obama has inherited a mess, why would he accept responsibility for something he didn't do? I think since Republicans think Bush did such a wonderful job, they should be more than willing to accept responsibility for what occured on their watch.

Where is the media as the honest broker here? How many jobs did W's stimulus last year (remember those 2008 rebate checks) create? The Republicans just want to reduce taxes, as if that won't result in a yet bigger deficit as well. But the Republicans ushered in the biggest tax cuts in history in 2001, 2002, and 2003. How have those tax cuts helped the economy? The economy never grew as they hypothesized, and we continued to dig ourselves into more government red ink while the rich got fat and happy off the stock market, flipping houses, Wall Street bonuses, and outrageous executive pay for their false profits. Of course, when profits go down, they blame the economy - when they go up, it is due to their terrific performance. RIGHT!

If Obama is suppose to work out every problem created over the last 8 years in 6 short months, then he truly would be a mircle man. Not one time has he ever said the stimulus would an instantaneous fix. First and foremost was to stop the massive blood loss. The trauma this country has suffered economically has been coming for years. What President Obama did say was this would be a steady improvement felt over the next two years. That it would ultimately create jobs by investing in our infrastruture and technology. Did the republicans miss that part or are they too busy tearing down our country and screaming like chicken little. They weren't screaming while we were going down the tube. President Obama implored us to build a financial plan, save and economize our resources. Knowing this was going to get worse before it got better, I did just that. I've scrimpted and saved. I knew 2009 was going to be the turning point with no quick fixes.

To gneubeck: Bush destroyed our great nation, and Obama is salvaging it. Lying to invade Iraq which has cost us trillions, leaving Afghanistan prematurely to go to Iraq has cost us 7 years of waste, Bin laden who masterminded 911 has not been caught in 8 years, Bush's anti-regulatory bank policies caused the collapse of our economy, etc. Obama has nothing to do with the damage and collapse of our economy and massive unemployment. As of 2007, jobs were beginning to be lost. Obama was elected Nov. 2008. The US economy is not like some motorcylce that one can maneuver quickly for a turnaround. Those who think that Obama can fix what Bush created are stupid.

Without the Stimulus, we would be a a worse condition, near starvation. Following the orders of their Beloved Leader Rush, dittohead Republicans point to their Rolex watches and bark at Obama, 'you've been here SIX MONTHS already and you haven't fixed the economy; therefore, your stimulus program is a FAILURE! YOU are a FAILURE!'
Never mind the Republicans have been screwing up our economy, our country and parts of the entire world for at least 8 and more probably 40 years. Since '68, Republicans have ruled the Oval Office for 70% of the time. For much of that time they dominated one or both houses of Congress. And from '94 to '06, the GOP controlled BOTH houses of Congress and from 2000 to '08 they had the White House, too. The GOP owned the whole shebang--and now they're carping about Obama's 'failure' to unravel in barely 180 DAYS the Gordian Knot of disasters he and fellow Democrats inherited last November. The American economy is like on overloaded super tanker and you can't turn it around on a dime like a jet ski. Especially when it's overloaded with the toxic detritus from the worst administration in history.

The stimulus bill, signed into law less than a month after Barack Obama took office, reached 1,434 pages and will eventually cost the nation more than $1 trillion.

This topic reminds us of the premise that the only legitimate government is one so limited that it can hardly be considered a government at all. It should be roughly the same for lawmaking: Any bill that goes beyond the basics should never be considered legislation. That would bring needed sunshine to a murky federal process. Only politicians and those who feed off of them wouldn't be better off.

Obama’s “stimulus” is a train-wreck- these jobs figures are far worse than the ones the White House warned us about if we DIDN’T pass the bill- so it was passed, and then unemployment soars anyway?

Instead of creating jobs, interest rates were bumped up, the dollar slid… and it didn’t help anybody get any work. Much of this is due to the fact that Obama’s agenda has mortified almost every machine of job-and-growth creation in the country.

The One couldn’t deliver the type of “temporary, targeted, and timely” bill that he promised repeatedly, and regardless of his image in the press, Obama simply lacks the the political stature to control Pelosi and Reid… who hit the trough hard, while bickering like siblings.

And the lack of GOP co-conspirators exposed Obama politically… this legislation now looks to be a HUGE gamble. And when all this pork-n-welfare fails to generate any real economic gains, the Democrats will face a bloodbath in 2010.

As one of the unemployed, I have paid careful attention to the President's Stimulus Plan and I can flatly state that I never once heard him say that it would work immediately. Every discussion I heard said that the effects of the Stimulus Bill would start to take effect in the Fall of 2009. Why do I remember this because as an unemployed American I had to take into account that my lenght of unemployment might stretch to that time or slightly beyond and make personal fiscal accordingly. That meant slashing expenses to the bare minimum in order to stretch my raided savings.

So I can with equal certainity state that Eric Cantor is lying through his little weaselly nerdy teeth who claim otherwise. Likewise for all the parroting Republicans that repeat everything their Leaders say without thinking those statements through.

Also to address the Republicans parrots who like to scream "Acorn" every chance they get - again please go check the facts and not the talking points. First off reputable news organizations, who would have loved nothing better than to find a juicy scandal, found no substance to McCain's claim about Acorn, which he made as yet another Hail Mary Pass in his campaign full of Hail Mary Passes. Not a single individual from Acorn has been charged with voter fraud. Please remember that one of the many Bush Scandals involved the firing of Republican AGs because they did not find any case against Acorn on voter fraud. On the other hand there is the Young Political Majors, a Republican Get-Out-The-Vote organization. This Republican organization, Young Political Majors, and its founder have been charged with voter fraud and deception in one state and are being investigated on similar charges in two others. So if you Parrot Republicans are generally upset about voter fraud you need to change your rally cry from Acorn to Young Political Majors.

Obama is a one term economic incompetent who rivals Jimmy Carter in his lack of understanding of our economic system. He has already shown himself to be more or less a joke in foreign policy (contradicting his own V.P., who was chosen for his supposed foreign policy expertise, on Israel and Iran was really something) so he is akin to Carter in that regard as well. But Americans are a bit more tolerant with foreign policy incompetence that they are with domestic policy incompetence.

With the real unemployment rate at between 16 and 20%, depending upon which estimate you believe, and Obama's failed stimulus package and his other silly bloated spending, he is setting us up for a long, painful economic period that will rival the Great Depression but will perhaps be longer and more insidious. Obama supporter Warren Buffet understands this and a few weeks ago stated that an economic recovery is years away and then promptly followed up his words with actions and fired a large number of Berkshire Hathaway employees this week.

Obama and the Democrats have a great deal in common with the Jimmy Carter era except that back then the Democratic Party was well know for supporting democracy around the world but now seems to support supporting dictators like Chavez and the lunatic in Iran in the name of "nuance." Just when the country thought that Richard Nixon and the Republicans had really wrecked politics and our national image along came a savior named Jimmy. Think Bush/Obama and you get the picture. I celebrate what is happening now because it will be a good lesson for the suckers who fell for the silly political sloganeering of a used car salesman.

I don't think anyone advocated "doing nothing". And there is no "lying" on the part of the President. He believes the economic advisors that tell him that any spending is good so you might as well reward your party and your supporters.

It is as unfair to criticize President Obama for his draconian flood of money because of what he has been advised as it was to criticize President Bush because he was told that Saddam possessed WMD and intended to use them immediately.

But in true, "don't confuse me with the facts" partisans, both polarized sides will leap on the half of the previous statement that they agree with. The problem with all of this viciousness is that we throw out the good with the silly. In healthcare, the incentives for computerization is amazingly good for all of us, while it is silly to throw massive amount of government money at "the healthcare crisis" when the healthcare industry can solve the problem given the correct incentives and rules.

It's like all of us are painting ourselves our team colors and mindlessly ranting. But it ain't a sports game -- when you leave the stadium, your car will be gone and you'll have to walk home.

Not only is he lying, everyone knows he is lying. It takes a special kind of arrogance and hubris to lie so unconvincingly. When he stampeded the Congress to pass the stimulus it was clear he was lying then too -- the money is disproportionally going to Democrats, unions, and other Obama supporters like the vote stealing ACORN group.

It is exactly the right answer to do nothing. If Obama announced "we cannot afford either the health bill or the energy bill, and we must cancel the rest of the stimulus because we must face the fact that we just don't have the money and the deficit is dragging down the confidence and the will of the American people to spend and invest

That is what Americans want to hear, no more government seizure of assets, controls on compensation, tax hikes, no increased energy costs, no more uncertainty that our freedoms will be curtailed, no more redistribution of wealth, no more Obama -- the fascist dictator who would kill our economy.

When pushing his stimulus (wink wink) bill it required swift actin to keep unemployment from going above 8%.

"If we do not move swiftly to sign the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act into law, an economy that is already in crisis will be faced with catastrophe," Obama said during a meeting with fellow Democrats in Virginia.

"What Americans expect from Washington is action that matches the urgency they feel in their daily lives, action that's swift, bold and wise enough for us to climb out of this crisis," Obama wrote in the Washington Post

Unemployment is at 9.5% and now:

The plan "was not designed to work in four months," Obama said.

But Obama, you said it would keep unemployment under 8%....SAre you sure you know what your doing because I don't think you do....

The election of Obama was tantamount to writing the obituary for a formerly great Nation. America is in an economic crisis as a direct consequence of the mortgage meltdown that proliferated toxic assets throughout our financial industry; and, unless we own up to the historically documented cause factors, we may well be doomed by Obama's policies, that he now attempts to sell to the G-8 and his African homeland, to repeat this debacle. Obama and his Democrat colleagues militantly protected Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac from Republican efforts to tighten the Quasi's grossly irresponsible lending practices in the acquisition and disposition of fraudulent/worthless mortgage assets. After which, our "Reparator-In-Chief", "ACORN" Obama, having led the charge to prohibit mortgage lenders from tightening their lending terms for low-income recipients in the full knowledge that these individuals DID NOT have the capacity to repay these loans, welcomed the principal executive offenders, who had cooked the books to cover up this fiasco, into his Administration structure. Impeachment cannot come soon enough.

MEMO TO POTUS, Obama Cabinet (via WH Staff capable of penetrating "the bubble")

Your economic policies, your administration and the rule of law itself are being subverted from within by a nationwide, multi-agency extrajudicial targeting and punishment "matrix" that seems to be below your personal radar.

CIA Director Leon Panetta and DHS Secretary Napolitano appear to perceive the depth and breath of this authoritarian, anti-democratic apparatus bequeathed to you by your predecessor administration and its "leave behinds" -- some of whom seem to hold you in an insincere embrace.

Upon your return, you must confront and disarm the betrayers of the Constitution who comprise what some regard as "the shadow government" -- before democracy and your presidency become their victims.

Good people are being destroyed in what amounts to an American genocide-politicide.

Is the "bubble" so impermeable that you no longer can perceive the proximate danger?

When george w. bush took office the United States had a surplus. And now, House Republican Whip Eric Cantor and the rest of the far to the right, foaming-at-the-mouth, nutjob republicans want Obama to fix their sins in six short months?

JUDGE NOT, LEST YE BE JUDGED
