Obama's Backyard Summit

By Garance Franke-Ruta
Vice President Biden joined President Obama at Thursday evening's much-anticipated "beer summit" -- a phrase that by day's end had become a leading trending topic on Twitter -- at the White House with Harvard University Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Sgt. James Crowley of the Cambridge, Mass., police.

The men quaffed beers from clear glass mugs and snacked on peanuts and pretzels served in small silver bowls. The president, as anticipated, had a Bud Light, and Crowley had a Blue Moon. Gates mixed it up by having a Samuel Adams Light -- a gesture of peace towards Massachusetts? -- instead of the advertised Red Stripe, while Biden sipped on a non-alcoholic Buckler.

Crowley did most of the talking during the brief moment that reporters were permitted to glimpse the men; Gates appeared to be leaning in, listening intently. At one point, the president laughed heartily.

Both Gates and Crowley brought their families to the White House, and the two men -- brought together by a 911 call that ultimately led Crowley to arrest Gates on (since dropped) disorderly conduct charges -- toured the East Wing together prior to meeting with the president in the Oval Office, then moving out into the Rose Garden for the sit-down.

Gates was accompanied to the White House by his children, fiance and father. Crowley was joined on his visit by his wife and children. The families toured the West Wing while Gates and Crowley enjoyed beers with the president and vice president.

About that shift in Gates's beer selection, it's interesting to note that Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.) wrote the White House this week, urging the president to include Sam Adams in the beer selections, citing it as the only beer that would be wholly owned by a domestic producer. The beer is owned by Bay State brewers.

Looks like President Obama has brought the two parties together and has made sure everything worked out. It is so wonderful to have a President who takes lemons and turns it into lemonade with such grace and good nature. Everyone is much better off because President Obama is the wise and sensible man he is.

So is JakeD. Apologize to the cop who arrests you for breaking into your own home after showing him ID? Is that stupid or retarded??

I suppose if a black cop did that to JakeD he would send him a thank-you card. Like hell!

OBAMA and GATES: APOLOGIZE TO CROWLEY!

gregp1:

I believe that Sgt. Crowley and his friends were the ones being called "racist" in that post.

John Patrick Grace:

Please quote the words you believe comprise Obama's "apology". Thank you in advance.

I ADMIRE THIS PRESIDENT. HE WORKS VERY HARD. IF YOU WORK HARD, YOU ARE BOUND TO MAKE SOME MISTAKES. IF YOU DO NOTHING, THERE IS NO SUCCESS.
BECAUSE THE PRESIDENT CALLED THE POLICE STUPID, I FIND STUPID LIKE BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER BUT EAISER TO DEFINE. I DEFINE IT AS LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF THE ACTION.
THE POLICEMAN AND HIS DEPARTMENT WERE "STUPID"
THET VIOLATED THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS OF MR. GATES. NOT RACIAL PROFILING, NOT DISORDERLY CONDUCT BUT YOUR RIGHT TO DO AS YOU PLEASE IN YOUR OWN HOUSE SO LONG AS YOU DO NOT HURT SOME ONE ELSE.
IN SOUTHERN UNITED STATES AND IN MOUNTAINOUS REGIONS OF THIS COUNTRY, ESPECIALLY TEXAS WHERE EVERYONE IS ALOWED TO CARRY A GUN AND PROPERTY RIGHTS ARE VERY MUCH RESPECTED, THAT POOR POLICE OFFICER COULD HAVE BEEN LEGALLY SHOT FOR DEMANDING THAT SOME ONE EXIT THEIR OWN HOME FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN TO GET ARRESTED FOR INSULTING A POLICE OFFICER.
I THINK THE PRESIDENT HANDELED THIS VERY WELL. THE PROBLEM WILL NOT GO AWAY. POLICE AUTHORITY HAVE INCREASED OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS. NOT ONLY BLACKS AND HISPANICS BUT ALSO WOMEN, THE SICK, THE ELDERLY AND YOUNG WHITE MALES ARE HAVING THEIR RIGHTS DENIED AND THEIR HEALTH AND SAFETY CHALLENGED BY POLICE. IT APPEARS THAT NONE OF THESE POLICE ACTIONS ARE REPREMANDED AND THE VERY SERIOUS ONES ARE AQUITED.

I agree, this was a class act on the part of all four participants. I saw the photos of this very simple meeting and was proud to be an American.

What a refreshing change from a Bush White House that rarely admitted making a mistake. Any mistake. And never apologized. Obama's Beer Summit was a class act. In my view all three participants made errors in judgment: Gates by becoming mouthy with a police officer, Crowley by not explaining his order to Gates to "step outside" when Gates was, after all, in his own home, and Obama for using the miscalibrated adverb "stupidly" referring to Crowley's behavior.
There should indeed be apologies all around, and perhaps at the Beer Summit there were. It's now time for the right-wing Obamaphobes to disown their bile and apologize to the country for all the poison they have spewed over this incident.

WAS PROFESSOR GATES AMONG THOSE 'TARGETED' FOR IDEOLOGICAL REASONS BY 'COMMUNITY STALKERS'...

...THE 'STREET MUSCLE' OF A SECRETIVE MULTI-AGENCY EXECUTIVE BRANCH PROGRAM OF 'VIGILANTE INJUSTICE'?

• Rule of law subverted by fed-funded, nationwide vigilante volunteer "Gestapo" that has co-opted and compromised local law enforcement.

* Microwave/laser radiation "directed energy weapons" deployed to silently TORTURE and degrade the health of American citizens.

• "Intelligence-based policing" a pretext for a security/military/intel SOCIAL PURGE, executed at the GRASSROOTS with the cooperation of local law enforcement.

Pres. Obama is a miracle for America in the year its fate will be sealed - ascent to greatness or descent into meaninglessness. To those that continue to tear him apart, from the left and right, remember, the Wall of Shame is very, very, very large with plenty of room for your name, for your children to remember, and despise you.

Joe Biden must have loved yesterday as he's not in hot water for something he said! Have to wonder though if the other three came away from the encounter "Schlitzed Budweiser".

Also, Mr. President, if you're going to have a beer, have something with some body to it. "Lite" is like taking your first cousin to the movies on a Saturday night.

Wish I could say "all's well, that ends well.

But somehow the statements and mistatements around this will continue. Race remains a sore point; only working at it, will in time help in changing attitudes. What the president showed was leadership.. Its always better to be wrong, than weak.
Despite the chatter, only a strong, confident person, can fess up when something slides in the wrong direction. In this "chess" game President Obama made the right moves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m32iJgIpyL8

MESSAGE TO: seemstome | July 30, 2009 9:49 PM

Two coons? What the hell is wrong with you boy!? Your naked display of racism PROVES Obama's point. Thank you.

Crowley, after arriving back in Massachusetts, went to his favorite bar where he was enshrined for his "Blue Moon with two Coons summit meeting". He had to leave early though because he has a racial sensitivity class to teach tomorrow.
