For Shared Birthday, Obama Brings Cupcakes to Helen Thomas

Updated 3:25 p.m.
By Michael A. Fletcher
President Obama made a surprise appearance in the White House press briefing room Tuesday afternoon to deliver a paper plate full of cupcakes to honor the birthday he shares with veteran journalist Helen Thomas.

Obama, who is celebrating his 48th birthday, led the press corps in singing "Happy Birthday" to Thomas, who turned 89 today. He then delivered the cupcakes to Thomas and asked her to make a wish. "You gotta blow it out to make it come true," Obama instructed, before Thomas extinguished the one lit candle on the plate.

Obama then sat next to Thomas, a columnist for Hearst Newspapers, to pose for a picture. Before leaving, he told the assembled reporters that Thomas wished for "world peace, no prejudice -- but she and I also had a common birthday wish: she said she hoped for a real health care reform bill."

Share your Your Take on what message, advice, or gift you'd like to give Obama today on his 48th birthday.

I hope the President will now call on her once in a while...

Helen Thomas is a National treasure; during
the Bush years, she was relegated to Press
Corps Siberia because she had the guts to
do what no other reporter would...put Dubya
on the hot seat. May she live to challenge
Presidents for another 80+ years.

Why is this news? Aren't we fighting two wars, going through economic crisis, not to mention all else going on!?! Why am I seeing this on the "front page" of washingtonpost.com? Why not report on a soldier celebrating his birthday on the front lines, not some old liberal reporter in the front row on the White House briefing room. Come on Washington Post...and you wonder why people aren't ordering your paper anymore!

My best wishes for a very happy birthday to both President Obama and Helen Thomas.
40 years between them -- both have had remarkable success throughout their lives.
During the late 50s, my husband worked on the Dole plantation picking fresh pineapple.
I wish I could send them each a fresh pineapple from the Islands.

It is a matter of respect for someone older and respected. I say Hear Hear, Good for Him.

I think of what Marshall McLuhan wrote:

"Turn down the volume and watch the action". Pres. Obama did the right thing. he was not born to high society, but he instictively, almost always, says and does the right thing.

As a Canadian, I wish Pres. Obama a very happy birthday and a a successful year to come. He tries very hard, and works very smart. While he is not perfect, I do not know who is. As the Bible says, let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Happy Birthday Helen...you're the best

But where were the cupcakes from?! Come on, we hear about every sally in the president-ate-here burger wars, and no idea who supplied the birthday cupcakes? Anxiously awaiting this detail. (Seriously! ... but okay, maybe not all that anxiously.)

Another shameless plug by Obama to try and get Healthcare passed without any real independent analysis into whether the program will work

alutz, do you wake up stupid or is it something you work on throughout the day?
ditto to affirmativeactionpresident, who is also clearly a maroon, as bugs bunny used to say.

Sorry, partner but no happy wishes here. You are destroying our nation, bit by bit.

If I HAD to give you a gift, it would be a midnight visit from Helen Thomas. ENJOY!

The President shares the same birthday with my sister in law Rama Dalein. President Obama, may God protects you and your family and guides you through the right path. Happy birthday to you. God bless USA and yes for health care reform.

Happy Birthday, Mr President. Have a terrific eight years ahead. The rest should be piece of cake for someone like you anyways.

I would croon like Monroe to you, but since I am a guy, it might look a bit gayish to you.

So I am passing on it.

Aw, cute!

What a shame dullards posting neg on this light-hearted blogpost don't seem to grasp the concept of political context.

Politcal advocacy 101:

For a light-hearted non-political post involving a politician (or his family): you ignore it or say something genuinely sincere or cute.

For a post re political policy: you express your disagreement specific to that policy.

Otherwise -- and undercutting your political point -- you're babbling and one might surmise that you're just a dismissable crank.

Posted by: dadada | August 4, 2009 4:03 PM

What a refreshing gesture to see Obama treat Ms. Thomas with some respect, after the way all the classless tirds in the Bush White House childishly ignored her.

I guess if Ms. Thomas was a hot young, hairless stud with a 12" dick and willing ready and able for hot man to man action, like Jeff Gannon, Ms. Thomas would have been called on with more frequency during Bush press conferences.

These conservatives are pretty comical, with their predictable moaning about the trivial.

Shame on you too for spewing such foolishness.

affirmativeactionpresident...just your userpost name says that you should just keep your comments to yourself. How is he a fake when he is pushing for something thatt will better ALL Americans? Because his goals actually mean something he is a fake? Get over yourself and work positivly with YOUR President (wheather you like it or not) to help bring a reform bill that benifits Americans instead of critizing the guy. If you have a problem with the bill then express your views in the proper manner. The post you made in my eyes...disgraceful.

Posted by: TCobb20721 | August 4, 2009 3:50 PM

TO: This fake will use anything to get his agenda out there. He can't stay off the TV and he uses a fake celebration to get in his health care junk in the mix. What a creep.

Well, that is just the kind of thinking that got your party tanked in the last election. You couldn't say a kind word about anyone, and probably never had a birthday party yourself. So just be quiet!

Happy birthday, Mr. President! We hope your wishes do come true!

to "affirmativeactionpresident"

Your comment is as pathetic as you are pitiful.

Why are you so hateful?
