On Smerconish Show, Obama Seeks to Clear Up Misconceptions

By Anne E. Kornblut
Pressed by a radio host and listeners calling in from around the country, President Barack Obama tried on Thursday afternoon to clear up confusion surrounding his health care proposals -- and insisted a government-run insurance option would be only a small, and optional, part of it.

"What we've said is, we think that's a good idea," Obama said, referring to the concept of a public option that has drawn fire in recent days. "We haven't said that's the only aspect."
Following days of stories about an apparent shift in the administration's approach, after Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius last Sunday said a public option was not essential, Obama repeated his aides' argument that the position is not new. "The press got a little excited, and some folks on the left got a little excited," Obama said. "Our position on this hasn't changed."

Obama was a guest of Philadephia-based radio talk show host Michael Smerconish, a contrarian, and sometimes conservative, commentator who supported the president in the election. In the 20-minute interview, which took place in and was broadcast live from the White House, Smerconish was polite but direct, as were the callers. In addition to health care, Obama was asked about the cash-for-clunkers program, the release of a Lockerbie bombing convict and the elusiveness of Osama bin Laden.

On health care, Obama said he is holding out for a compromise with Republicans, but that he believes some Republican leaders are being obstructionist for political gain. "As far as negotiations with Republicans, my attitude has always been, let's see if we can get this done with some consensus. I would love to have more Republicans engaged and involved in this process," Obama said. But, he said he believes some Republicans have decided, "Let's not give them a victory and maybe we can have a replay of 1993-94...I think there are some folks who are taking a page out of that playbook. But this shouldn't be a political issue." He singled out Republican Senators Olympia Snowe, Charles Grassley and Mike Enzi for trying to work in a constructive way.

"We are willing to make compromises," Obama said, adding that he is not willing to give up on "core principles."

Check out this video where AMA physicians answer patient questions about health system reform and debunk some of the myths that are still out there. www.hsreform.org

So would it be better to take baby steps toward health care reform and pass a scaled back bill that might actually get bipartisan support? I'm still waiting to see what the Senate Gang of Six come up with before I start to panic. For me, any reform no matter how small would be an improvement, particularly it lets me buy insurance across state lines. Here in New York state we probably have the most limited choices and highest premiums anywhere in the nation. Want to drive costs down? Then let me buy my insurance from companies that sell in Connecticut without having to move to Connecticut.

Posted by: TheNervousCat | August 21, 2009 3:52 PM

One of the misconceptions is that President Obama doesn't understand how the health care industry functions. He lacks the knowledge of our nation's health care system and how it works! He is avoiding key questions Americans are asking about the Health Care Reform. Why is he and his administration pushing so hard to change our entire health care system when 85% of the insured are satisfied with their health care coverage? Why is he wanting to throw the baby out with the bath water and wanting to overhaul our entire health care system when his primary focus should be on reforming Medicare, Medicaid, Medical and the VA. All of these are government run entities which are going bankrupt. Where is all of this funding for this Health Care Reform going to come from? Does he and this administration not realize the status of nation's economy with job losses, the flailing housing market, the ping-ponging stock market, etc...? He really needs to get off the campaign trail and research and study our health care system currently and what he is pushing for...

Oi! I'm no republican, but slaughter my own cow every time I buy a burger, mate.

Don't confuse 'social' with 'socialist'. Yeah, we all know we're dependant upon one another, but that's what the free market's all about. Reform's critical, agreed, but taxing the Haves to cover the Have-nots until the Haves BECOME Have-nots is a self-destructive line of reasoning. It ain't the answer.

Texas went from 48th in the country in healthcare quality to the low 30's in just the past few years by instituting tort reform. Yeah, take away unnecessary and unwarranted litigation against doctors and one of the biggest costs associated with healthcare drops like a stone and then so does the cost of insuring people. Seems pretty obvious, but I'll give you 43-million 'legal' reasons why your Saviour isn't drafting THAT into his 'reform'!

"NOBODY WANTS THIS PLAN.
PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

No one.

Except...

The approximately 46 million people who have NO health insurance what so ever.

The approximately 80 million who are either under-insured (i.e. high co-payments, high deductibles, or astronomically high premiums).

The countless others who are dropped from coverage if they become ill or if a "pre-existing" condition is found by the insurance company allowing them to cancel your health insurance.

To my Republican friends you have to realize that a private for-profit health insurance company has a fiduciary responsibility to its shareholders to maximize profits. Insuring sick people or paying out insurance claims is NOT how a private insurance company maximizes profits!

The rest of the adult population is one pink slip away from losing their insurance.

Democrats and Republicans have completely different views with regard to governance.

Republicans believe that providing health insurance for it's citizens is NOT a legitimate function of Government and it is up to each individual to provide for his or her own health care.

Consistent with this "every man/woman for him/herself" ideology, Republicans opposed Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Social Security.

I wish Republicans would be honest with the American people about this and just simply say "Look, your Government doesn't owe you diddly if you get sick."

Democrats, on the other hand, believe Government can be used improve people's lives especially when it comes to health care. Democrats further believe in a sense of community, shared sacrafice, and that we are "all in this together." There are no "rugged individuals" who are "self reliant" but rather we are dependent on one another for all our survival needs (i.e. food, clothing, shelter, etc).

How many of Republicans out there slaughtered your own cow today, made your own clothes, or built your own house?

Also, if any you Republicans become gravely ill or are involved a serious accident you are totally at the mercy of strangers (i.e. doctors and nurses) to save your life.

So much for the "rugged individualist" who wants the Government to "get off hus/her" back. Tell that to the doctor when you get sick! I'm sure you won't be any mood to comparison shop either for the best deal to save you life.

Also, I'm willing to bet even conservative Republican victims of hurricane Katrina did not refuse help from the Federal Government if their house was totally destroyed and lost everything they owned.

Unless you live on an isolated island you are dependent on others and completely helpless on your own. As you become more old and fragile this even more the case.

So I say to my conservative brothers and sisters you didn't accomplish anything on your own and you owe somebody, big time! That "somebody" you owe is your fellow countrymen who you derisively refer to as the "big bad Government."

I am so tired of reading comments from folks who insist that they have "read the bill." Aside from the point that the bill is a moving target, what is this supposed to add to the equation?

We all know that our current situation is untenable, that insurance companies keep squeezing the poor risks out of their pools and raising the rates on the rest of us, that our employers are slowly dropping out of the market, and that somebody declares bankruptcy each 3 minutes in this country because of health care bills -- and the majority of those bankruptcies are people who have health insurance.

So, you've read "the bill," whatever that is. Assuming you're insured, have you read your health insurance policy?

Didn't think so. In fact, unless you're one of the folks who gets the ironclad multimillion dollar salaries that come bundled with Cadillac health insurance, you're not covered if you really get sick. Remember the little girl who died of leukemia because her parents' health insurance wouldn't pay for the treatment that would save her life?

If you're so excited to read turgid incomprehensible prose, please do tell us about your own health insurance plan. I can bet it's a downer.

Obama is the "misconception"

Posted by: JaxMax | August 20, 2009 9:15 PM

I just want to know if the people who are defending this plan tooth and nail have actually taken the time to read the bill? I have read 864 pages....believe me, that was more than enough. If you read the bill, the argument will be over. He has lied bold-faced to the american public. He says, "you can keep your plan". Yes, ONLY if you don't change anything like your job, type of coverage, or premium. If you do, you lose that right. Why does the plan not start until 2013? Oh yeah, that's after the election. Hmmmm. Please don't say another word of argument until you know what you are arguing for. Read the bill!!! Then, you won't say another word, because you will be embarrassed that you got played....again!

A lot of the screamers are self-proclaimed Christians with out compassion. They tend to wear the cloak of self-righteous to conceal the motives of their hearts. If they love not than they are not what they claim to be. They’re not dumb nor ignorant to the facts but their hatred blinds them with rage. I have more respect for the KKK guy who speaks without pretense than these posers. Remember the lyrics from, Eve of Destruction by, Barry McGuire. “Hate your next neighbor but don’t forget to give grace”. I’m a Christian but not one of those.

Look around and you’ll see the burden that the high cost of medical insurance is having to those around you? A Kaiser Family Foundation states that the average employer-sponsored medical insurance cost have risen 119% since 1990 and average $12,360 per policy. At that rate they could double to $24,720 in 7-8 years. A study by the American Journal of Medicine says, that the leading cost for family bankruptcies are for medical cost.

Weatherford Oil company just received a $224 million oil contract to drill 20 wells in the southern region of Iraq now managed by Halliburton wanted for rape, murder and stealing oil. Iraq had no air force, navy, missile system, aerial defenses and it never fired a bullet at us. Ray Gun armed Saddam to gas the Iranians and the Kurds and the inbred moron ranting about how Redneck is a HERO didn't give a Flying Dead Fallujah baby when Saddam gassed the Kurds. Redneck let the army go home with their guns not because Saddam was a nuclear threat but because they were already ramming the NEW OIL LAW DOWN THEIR THROATS, THE SURVIVORS. For inbred morons from Dixie where I live to say they have an ordained right to murder whomever they want because they're illiterate American jackasses is a list of war crimes longer than their lies, alibies and GED's. Blackwater is being investigated for rape, murder and genocide to mention a few. Nineteen Saudis attacked us and all the the little Republicans with their itty bitty inbred brains cain't fetch up no oil contract for themselves. $224 million for Weatherford oil company of Houston. I'm a Vietnam War veteran and you need to go fetch some manhood at your own expense. Bubba!

SIMONBM- Republicans are not the ones that played dead for 8 yrs and allowed enemies to become emboldened TERRORISTS on 9-11. ..."THEY"...went to war against the Taliban in Afghanistan ... and Saddam Hussein & IRAQ WITH A COALITION of more than 30 other countries ...INCLUDING Great Britain, Italy, Spain Poland and Australia! ..CLAIMING your insane inaccuracies DISHONORS our FRIENDS and the lives lost there! HOW DARE YOU? ... THE U.N. Weapons inspectors were given 12 yrs to find weapons and turned a blind eye as Saddam violated 16 U.N. Security Council Resolutions!!!... If BUSH LIED then the Bill Clinton Administration did too because.. CLINTON DEC 16 1998 (after ordering a strike)..."The mission is to attack Iraqs , nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and it's military capacity to threaten it's neighbors.".. 1998 Tom Dachle said that Clintons forced resolution would " SEND A CLEAR MESSAGE AS POSSIBLE THAT WE ARE GOING TO USE FORCE" ... "WE HAVE EXHAUSTED VIRTUALLY OUR DIPLOMATIC EFFORT TO GET IRAQI'S TO COMPLY WITH THEIR OWN AGREEMENT" .. KERRY SAID" , Saddam Hussein has already used weapons and has made it clear that he has the intent to continue to try , by virtue of his duplicity and secrecy ,to continue to do so." ... USING LIBIDIOT logic is like saying that we should have only attacked Japan because HITLER's Germany never did anything to the U.S. ...WAR HAD ALREADY BEEN DECLARED ON US When KERRI wanted to defeat Howard Dean, he argued that WE MUST deal with Saddam Hussein aggressively and to do otherwise would preclude that candidate FROM BEING PRESIDENT. Your guys ALWAYS enable enemies of our great country Then REPs grow a set and do what it takes to keep us safe . 9-11 wouldn't have happened if CLINTON would have done what he should have after the U.S.S. Cole was attacked .... and what the PEANUT FARMER should have done after Cosovo. ...Use your head for something besides a sex toy.

Obama and his cabal of dishonest A holes continue to lie to the people about their takeover of our health care system.
They plan to create a Kremlin like bureaucracy with a Commissar who makes unilateral decisions about what is adequate care, adequate costs and is mostly above judicial review.
Want to see their plan in action? Look at AMTRAK, the postal service or the VA debacle.
The government will artificially reduce costs in comparison to private insurance companies to ultimately drive them out of business.
These leftist liars just cannot afford to tell people the truth about rationed services, increased costs and taxes, as well as the loss of our privacy to the Commissar and the IRS, his enforcement agency.
Gutless, incompetent liars are all Obama and his goons are.

Yo, billisnice. You're lost son. You should cut your medical organs from the dead muslims you slaughtered for oil contracts. You might run across a spine. Nothing is dumber than a Republican. You kill your own sons for oil contracts. You kill children from 40,000 feet. You know no god or jesus. You're lying, child bombing oil thieves and the only thing the health care reform will do is lower your insurance payments due to competition and all the idiocy about socialism and hitler is again the rant from the illiterate, racist half of this nation chemically bombing colored chillen into a mush to fetch some manhood and oil contracts for oil thieves. You are petty thieves and you will die a stupid, petty thief, with no medical insurance. Ditto head!

This is unbelievable! I guess wind insurance is ok for government takeover in Mississippi.

Aug 17, 2009 –Monday-
Gene Taylor (D-MS) TOWN HALL, on C Span Healthcare Hub, the majority were there for ‘anti-HC Reform’.

D- Gene Taylor is not voting for Obama’s Healthcare Bill. He made that very clear.

Gene Taylor D-MS Blue Dog- at TOWN HALL stated –
“…the only wind insurance in the state of Mississippi is GOVERNMENT RUN INSURANCE”!

His words- not mine!

After Katrina- all other insurance companies left state. So much for Public Option eliminating the INDUSTRY!

Remember all those claims not paid?

Over $1 billion government dollars were paid to residents in Mississippi; because their insurance companies refused and were allowed not to pay.

Rep. Gene Taylor stated “If another catastrophe with wind damage occurs in their state without insurance (the Federal Government) their state would be wiped out immediately.

Where is Socialism?

Where is Nazism?

Where is Marxism?

Where is Hitler?

Where were the guns?

All anti-HC Reform- many seniors complain about all the fraud reported and nothing done- But- they are all anti HC Reform!

"The only wind insurance in the state of MS is GOVERNEMNT RUN INSURANCE!"

Wow- I guess the one and only PUBLIC OPTION is acceptable- When it comes to their home insurance.

The only option- A PUBLIC OPTION-and where is their outrage?

Where is their “I want my country back”?

Where is Socialism?

Where is Nazism?

Where is Marxism?

Where is Hitler?

Where were the guns?

Unbelievable!

Mississippi- 49th in the nation for quality, affordable, accessible health care

Louisiana took their place at 50!

I am astounded by the level of incivility and stupidity--in the dictionary sense of that word (and I don't distinguish here between liberals or conservatives)--that characterizes the "comments" section of the WaPO website. I guess an unmoderated comments section makes that inevitable. I hate to call out by name the Post's primary competitor but the NY Times website maintains a high level of discourse without reducing the commentary to mush....I recognize that a moderated comments section requires resources to manage but I really would have expected more from the "readers" of the WaPo.

protest against this plan includes republicans, democrats, libertarians and every other party inbetween.

misconception: :: that you will not meet with resistencne when you attempt to put something in place concerning ALL americans without having ALL AMERICANS represented at the table.

misconception::: that a single opinion (obama's) is more important than that of MILLIONS.

reality check: obama continues to ignore THE PEOPLE to get his way.

Medicare and SS are broke, Obama want to increase the age folks get SS.

My opinion is both side play games, and we are the losers. We need real reform, not the open ended bill we have now. A bill that put the government in charge of you health care, not your doctor. They can not manage $. Just another pot for them to rob like SS and give away overseas...

Those of us not history challenged know that state-control of private industries is not mere regulation it is domination. Czars we did not elect running everything and even deciding the compensation of our largest corporation movers and shakers. What happened to the board of directors and the shareholders rights? The State trumps them with a czar in some office some where deciding what is good for these varioubecause they had the bad sense to take government handouts.
Medicare is a bureaucracy that is a nightmare for doctors is very costly. The paperwork and the bureaucratic lunacy are mindboggling.
One more layer of bureaucracy to run Obamacare, whatever it might be of tens of thousands of federal workers, better insured than those on the new program, that cannot be fired and get paid well to shuffle paper and decide if you can have a CT Scan or not. It took Medicare years to get around to approving many innovative techniques.
Cuba and Venezuela are examples of socialist/fascist regimes. Is that what we have in America right now?

How about we get rid of Medicare and give every 65+ citizen today's per capita Medicare dollars to buy health insurance from those wonderful "retail" health insurers that truly care about health more than profit.

The reason that the GOP is doing all this hate filled lying is only because they want to be the ones to take all the glory for it. They have never had a plan to help Americans with health care reform and now that the Obama and the Democrats are going ahead for the first time in history to cover all Americans the Republicans can't allow the Democrats to be victorious because then the Republicans will be shown up for what they really are, big mouth belligerent corporate Americans, and the people who continue to vote for them are the ones always getting it stuck to them. And that is why they believe the big mouth Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity and all the rest of the ones who have never served a day in service to America, and they continue to laugh at their lemmings all the way to the bank.

Posted by: billisnice | August 20, 2009 5:46 PM

Obama is the source of a multitude of misconceptions. It is time for Obama to stop the hostile propaganda campaign and start giving factual information. Otherwise Americans will have him run out of town when their taxes go up, their benefits go down, and their out-of-pocket co-pays increase.

HHS is spreading misinformation today that insurances deny employer coverage based on health care status - the insurance does not refuse coverage, they inform the employer of the cost of adding a new employee and the employer determines whether or not they extend coverage.

So penalties for non-coverage of employees should be in the form of a hefty tax penalty to the employer.

Posted by: mgd1 | August 20, 2009 5:46 PM

Thank God, for leadership that wants to save America’s health care system. The President recognizes the fact that adequate health care should not be rationed based on ones wealth or social status. No one can deny that our system is quick to perform a transplant for a wealthy sports star after years on alcoholism. However, a homeless person is allowed to die on the streets because the funding is unavailable. Governments and big business caused our current recession. Why should the workers who lost their jobs and insurance die on the streets because of healthcare rationing? Go into any county hospital and wait ten hours plus to see a doctor because you only suffer from the flu. Tell us then how the uninsured are adequately provided with care.

The reason that the misconceptions are so hard to finish off is that there is just enough truth to them. It does not help that the Congress has no idea what they are working on and the President is being reduced to being a shill for policies he has no concept about cost or how to get it done. Once the actual costs of the bailout programs are really known he will be ducking for cover. The banks, car companies, AIG etc have already told the Administration to go home and play somewhere else. Obama's real problem is that he has this desire to be loved and the American people want a leader not a whinner.
But health care can be passed in less than week if the American people are provided the exact same care that members of Congress receive.
It is a national disgrace right there with how Katerina was handled that Americans have to obtain health care via a charity clinc in LA.

Good luck clearing up those misconceptions! Everyone, from every political per persuasion spreads lies, distortions. The health insurance industry lobbyists send out some new rumor faster than the old lies can be put down. And we have twist on the left like E.J. Dionne, at the Post, trying to link every gun owner with the nut cases that carry guns to the town hall meetings while the Brady Bunch piles on with invented "statistics" and "facts" for banning gun ownership. Corporations an Wall Street trot out campaigns to convince a gullible public that outsourcing our jobs is somehow going to lead to a good economic future for this country and advocates for illegal immigrants try and convince us that the 20 million or so illegals here don't cost all that much and 'only take jobs that no American wants'. Obama made a deal with the pharmaceutical companies and insurance industry that results in their getting huge profits and a $16 annual federal subsidy, deals that none of the "health care reform" proponents talks about. In the end, without a public option the various health care proposals all need to be defeated and that industry cut off from any government subsidies, and they need to be regulated like public utilities. The real lesson in all of this, however, is that we need to eliminate business money from any public debate in the future.

Posted by: mibrooks27 | August 20, 2009 5:23 PM

The law only that "SEC. 246. NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS.

The bill says illegals are not included in this mess. What does this mean? It mean they will still get the free ER visits for aspirins and the tax payer will pay the bill. Illegals will not have to buy ins. You do. They will not be taxed to help pay for this mess, you will. Just another way to say if you are illegal you are protected and get freebies at the tax payer expense.

In this grand United States of America, we're arguing about reforming the sad state of affairs with our health care system, where our citizens are robbed of their money at high charges, and/or denied service, and many cannot afford.

What is there to even discuss about this?
ADD THE government OPTION to the table, for a cheaper price and let the people decide for themselves what works for them.

What is NOT okay, is to do nothing about this situation. This is America 2009 and the years are counting. We should be making improvements, not going into regression, or sitting stagnant on matters.

Make it happen =)

"Critics of President Obama’s health-care overhaul are zeroing in on his senior adviser David Axelrod, whose former partners at a Chicago-based firm are the beneficiaries of huge ad buys — now at $24 million and counting — by White House allies in the reform fight."

“David Axelrod has fully complied with the toughest ever ethics rules for administration officials, including divesting from AKPD before the administration began,” said Obama spokesman Ben LaBolt. “The notion that Mr. Axelrod should decline to participate in all health care policy work because his former firm — from which he has divested himself — has retained a single client which he has had no contact with is absurd.”

"Nonetheless, the selection of Axelrod’s former firm to push the president’s top initiative raises appearance questions, particularly since Axelrod’s son Michael still works there, said Bill Allison of the Sunlight Foundation, which advocates for stricter government disclosure and ethics rules."

“The big issue seems to me whether there is a quid pro quo with PhRMA,” said Allison, adding “there’s no evidence that Axelrod steered the business to the firm. But the fact that special interests like PhRMA and the American Medical Association working hand in glove with the White House picked a firm that is so close to the White House shows how incestuous Washington can be.”

A public health plan is needed. One that focuses on giving you choices and saving you $. This bill does not give you either. No bidding on drugs, etc. This does not guarantee you ins if you can not pay the premium. Is does not protect your property if you can not buy a plan or pay the co pay. It is to open to intrepretation. It will be another government stimulus disaster...Think

The law only that "SEC. 246. NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS.
Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States."

So to the extent they push higher premium costs off to higher income brackets, illegal aliens in lower income brackets do benefit. I do not see anything where it states they have to check immigration status, which I can assure you is used as a loophole used in many programs now, for example in the State of Illinois.

Nonresident aliens are exempt, which covers several type of visas, including student visas and temporary worker visas, and other visas.
So apparently if they need health care, we still cover the costs.

nosam32:

Please explain how illegals will be covered. Frankly it is beyond me by what mechanism would they be included since it would be an announcement that they were illegals. I am skeptical of this point and since you do not like Obama, it makes me skeptical of everything.

The other question I have is do you have a working relationship or an association with one or more insurance companies or to the health care industry in general.

They think Obama is a Manchurian Candidate from Kenya (sinister plot hatched 47 years ago), that global warming is a commie plot to steal their SUVs, and that health care reform is all about killing grandma and caring for illegals.

When will these people return to reality? Have they ever even visited there? These people need antipsychotic medications, but unfortunately they are fighting the very health care expansion that might allow themselves to get treatment. Kind of a deadly catch-22 for these afflicted people.

Simple question for the anti-reformers out there: You say things like, "you can't trust government to run your health care." My question is, are insurance companies trust-worthy? If insurance companies deny you coverage or scr ew you, what recourse do you have? NONE. If the government screws up, at least you have a vote, right? Or is that too complex for you?

Here is some information you WON'T see on the nightly news!

From a former military officer who was here.

Subject: The Date

First, let me say that I've moved three presidents up to now and I've seen incredible waste. But, the "new" guy really takes the cake. I don't have an issue with the President promising his wife dinner and a show or that he even takes his wife out.

The news say that the date cost $24,000, here's what you DON'T know.

Three days before "dinner" a C-17 flew Marines and the helicopter maintenance equipment to JFK Airport .

The day before "dinner" the USSS (Secert Service) and the motorcade flew to JFK
Airport

One crew of 5 spent two days and nights at the Hilton in Times Square. The average hotel bill: $621.66 plus $64 a day in per diem. The USSS guys were at a different Hilton in NYC, so figure that cost another
$14,000 (or so) plus per diem. The Marines had to have cost as much and were there four days, so figure another $55,000 plus per diem for 44 Marines).

Back to JFK, while the pilot was turning the plane (C-17) around to park, he noticed a rotor blade sticking out of the hangar where the helicopter was parked and informed me that either it wasn't ready to transport or it was flying home. There were FIVE helicopters, not ONE in the hangar.

The Marines guarding the "fleet" were flying all five helicopters home. The White House requested FIVE
helicopters. It cost about $140,000 to keep 5 helio's plus crews there and the trip's total had to be about $1,000,000.

The President didn't use Air Force One (the 747) his party came in THREE Air Force Lear jets.

So, date night consisted of: 2 C-17's flying three missions, 3 Lear jets, 5 Helicopters, Presidential Motorcade, 44 Marines, more than 20 USSS personnel and who knows what it cost the NYPD and NY Port Authority (at the airport) in overtime.

These are the same people that chastised the automobile CEO's for using their aircraft.

It further proves that the media only use the facts that make the President look good and hide any facts that will detract from his persona..

Is this the 'change' we expected?

Remember, 2010 is just around the corner. All we have to do is survive long enough.

REMEMBER, YOU, JOE TAXPAYER, PAID FOR THIS DATE!

Posted by: KBlit | August 20, 2009 5:04 PM

I find it pretty hilarious when Repubs say things like, "he's lying, you can't trust him, he's this, he's that." Seriously, do any of you recognize how silly you sound considering you supported Bush for 2 terms?? REALLY. Bush is viewed as the most dishonest and incompetent pres in US history. When he tapped your phones, did he give an explanation or consult with the people? When he lied to you about Iraq were you this upset? When he drove the economy into the ground did you protest?

Your comments expose you as hypocritical fools. Not only that, you continue to repeat claims that have been thoroughly debunked. There are NO death panels. NOBODY is forced into the public option etc. etc. No wonder someone like Palin is your brightest star!!! haha. And she can't get out two sentences without exposing how uninformed and ignorant she is. What company will want to pay for higher insurance if they can get you on a cheap government plan? A plan with fewer options and choices. With high deductible and less choices? NON...Think!

I can understand a little higher taxes to pay for folks who can not afford ins, but to ram this down out windpipes is rediculous without a savings is not moral.

Posted by: billisnice | August 20, 2009 4:58 PM

Obama is full of himself. A Chicago Mobster. He is lying. Telling you it is not moral to pass this bill? And, yet he is promotion homosexuality in out nation? I do not want my kids exposed to gays and lesbians. What a double talking mobster.

The Democrats have the votes in both houses to pass this bill. Why not? When it fails voter will retaliate and vote them out and put the GOP in power. But, if the get GOP and Citizen support they can say the GOP and voters wanted the bill. Making their seats in congress safer. The trick is on you. I can hear it now, maybe another stimulus package will help with health care? Sound famililar?

Use to be they would go after your property if you had a high doctor bill, now, if you do not buy or can not afford the government options they will get your property.

They were out with men, women, and children, signing the petition of Redress of the 2009 United States of America Federal Governmet for NO CONFIDENCE by recall of the ( every Name listed) Congress, the Hill, the Cabinet, the Czars, and Obama.

The petitions go to the County recordations offices to be come recorded documents and then entered into the Library of Congress by the people of the State, to congeal with the other 49 states to show a documented majority "will of the people" that defenders of the Constitution can then act upon.

How popular and powerful is this Petition, and it's historical location in the Library of Congress?
Ted Kennedy is trying to remove his name from the list Poste Haste Tthe old coot is shrewd and will the let others be remembered as Benedict Arnold's name is.

How popular is Obama?
He is on the radio, because he can't find prop supporters any longer for a photo op it seems.

The lies being told about Obama's health care overhaul are way beyond sound debate and rational opposition. The obvious reasons surround unreasonable hatred aimed at Obama by a party that has a "win-at-all-costs" mentality. Good sportsmanship seems to be dead in the USA, at least when losers are concerned.

Posted by: EarlC | August 20, 2009 4:17 PM

He didn't cover any supposed misconceptions, simply put. Rather, he attempted to create the perceptions that any negation of his offerings should be considered misconceptions. All this from a guy who ran as a moderate- now, THAT is a misconception! When his administration misspeaks- it's the media that gets excited. When he misspeaks- it's just a miscalculation. Yeah, tell me anything on a Wednesday afternoon, and I'll believe you.

Cash for Clunkers was not a financial success- period. Essentially, future sales were made at the taxpayer's expense. In fact, we haven't gotten the bill for that, yet. In addition, dealers have not been paid. Why didn't they just offer a rebate for vehicles that are manufactured in the USA? As it it, many of these "clunkers" have been resold at used car dealerships- no win there, either.

Interestingly, Obama continues to state that illegals will not be included, but goes on to give an example of how they will. Of course, all one has to do is look at the language that is used to cover this bit on page 50 (section 152) of the current proposal. Now, add 30m+ to the lines to see the disinterested doctors. In fact, one can only imagine the "migration trail" that will lead from the south!

Did you get the bit on Afghanistan? How did that get in there? Regardless, we're chasing human weapons of mass destruction, no doubt. It was quite revealing to hear Obama state that he's been writing/issuing more "death letters" pertaining to Afghanistan than Iraq these days. Perhaps, the war protesters ought to key into this? After all, people are dying and they can't seem to find these (human) weapons of mass destruction. What happened to bring home the troops?

It certainly appears as though the "health care" plan cares little about health no matter how it is sliced. However, it certainly does resemble a financial/freedom reform plan that will tax us into oblivion. Of course, it wouldn't sell with descriptors like that.

This just in from the Associated Press.

Firms with Obama ties profit from health push.

President Barack Obama's push for a national health care overhaul is providing a financial windfall in the election offseason to Democratic consulting firms that are closely connected to the president and two top advisers.

Coalitions of interest groups running at least $24 million in pro-overhaul ads hired GMMB, which worked for Obama's 2008 campaign and whose partners include a top Obama campaign strategist. They also hired AKPD Message and Media, which was founded by David Axelrod, a top adviser to Obama's campaign and now to the White House. AKPD did work for Obama's campaign, and Axelrod's son Michael and Obama's campaign manager David Plouffe work there.

One man's "clearing of misconceptions" is another man's "propaganda".

Ask yourself this. "If your company could save money by dumping to a public option, would they?" Next ask yourself "How long do you think private insurance would last when companies dump to the public option"? Then follow that one up with "Hey, am I really keen having the government run my healthcare the way they mismanage Medicaid and Medicare?"

It is pretty evident a public option would serve as a trojan horse for a single payer government run system, which is why people object so strongly to it. No matter how hard Obama downplays it and lies to you about its importance, you can see through his misconceptions and perceive the truth of Obamacare.

Democratic leaders were never obstructionist for political gain during the Bush years, right?

Posted by: thelaw1 | August 20, 2009 4:06 PM

Which story of Obama's do you believe, the one where he tells crowds that he believes in a single payer system that will take 15-20 years to accomplish or the one where he tells you that if you like your coverage you get to keep it?

It should be an easy answer. Obama has promised both things. Which do you believe?

This one is easier. Do you believe the Obama promise to planned paranthood where he promises that all women's reproductive care (abortion) would be covered under his plan or the promise to a bunch of religious leaders that abortions would not be performed with government funds?

Just pick which you believe and the other ones will be lies.

Fact: Democrats are starving small business...no loans. Their foreclosure relief programs are a miserable failure. Cash for Clunkers where are the reimbursements for car dealers?

Fact: Democrats will tax small businesses to fund Gov. Controlled Health Care.

Fact: Messiah Care bill states many places about boards, committees etc. to administer Gov. Controlled Health Care. Do you trust brown shirt gov. workers with your healt care.

Fact: How can the so called 47 million people without health care be treated in the Gov. Controlled Health Care without medical cost inflation, rationing of services or complete breakdown of the whole system like the post office or Amtrack.

Fact: Do you lemmings really think rich people will just crawl into a ball and pay all these new taxes on income or their businesses....look for massive unemployment for the middle class.

The reason there is so much screaming and shouting from the Right is because being so outnumbered in Congress, that's all they can do really. In reality, significant legislative progress has been made towards giving Obama exactly what he wants. Three of four committees have put forth a bill that has the public option and all the other reforms that Obama wants. Healthcare reform with a public option is a done deal in the House. The Senate is trickier, but the Democrats only have to work out a deal amongst themselves to move it through the Senate. Democrats don't need 60 votes in favor of the bill in the Senate, just 60 votes in favor of cutting off debate (ending the fillibuster). After that, only 50 votes are actually needed in favor of the bill since Biden can break a tie. So Obama and the Democrats still hold all the cards even if they have been temporarily thrown off-balance by all the shouting and lunacy on the Right.

REPUBLICAN PROPAGANDA DRIVING POLLS

There is this Republican and Republican pollster propaganda trying to convince us that the President and Democrats are losing and that their popularity is falling. It is not falling. People have been made by Republican pollsters and Party to base their answers on things that are patently false. But look at SurveyUSA poll that came out today. In that poll, 77% of Americans support public option in the health care bill. And there is another funny propaganda coming from the Republican side. I call this one the MITT ROMLEY HYPOCRISY. Ambitious Mitt just said the President should forget "extreme" left wing Democrats and negotiate with "extreme" right wing Republicans (led by Rush Limbaugh) who have been saying no to everything! Republicans get to keep their base; Democrats throw theirs overboard. Absurd logic indeed!

That is not what Obama said. The word twisting of right wingers never ceases.

What he said that in a life threatening emergency or a case where public health is at risk (i.e. T.B., Swine Flue) where the sick would spread their disease to health Americans we have an obligation to take care of an illegal alien. Further more, that accommodation is not under THIS bill, but is the current practice.

Posted by: Single_Payer | August 20, 2009 3:44 PM

Points.
1. No matter what happens to health care there will be a middle class tax hike that will most highly be above 5%.
2. Health care is not dead but very sick and the American people can thank all the lobby groups who paid of Congress.
3. Health care will begin to resemble the stuff the free clinic is giving away in California while we pour billions into wars we do not want.
4. Obama had no plan from the start and as for 'change' that quite likely is what Americans will have left after all the bailout's.
5. GM is taking new car production to Mexico due to cheaper labor which is a thank you for the bailot.
6. Obama is beginning to look like a lame duck and there are still over 3 years left.
At some point he starts heading overseas to avoid the problems.

Maybe impeachment and certainly COngress takes a hit in the mid-terms.

I very much appreciate seeing a change in mainstream media coverage. I see a lot more mention of sites like PolitiFact and FactCheck.org which do actual fact checking (revealing the truths and exaggerations of both sides impartially).

Prior, I thought the media covered the easy stories like the raucous town halls. Those stories are cheap to cover vs. stories that take real digging and fact checking.

President Obama tried to do the same on the radio talk show (which I heard most of). He tried to honestly answer questions. Some might dispute what he said, but that too can be done within the environment of checking the facts and clarifying the issues.

Health care reform is a subject which deserves fair, rational discussion with exaggerations on both sides sorted out.

"I have not said I was a supporter of single-payer..."
"I will not sign a bill that adds to the deficit..."

President Obama is in the chicken coup with Axelrod and those Democrat consultant firms trying to win favor of public opinion on national socialized heath-care legislation. The White House delivered one fried chicken in a letter to private health insurance companies from an Obama Federal agency notifying some 19 of the largest private health insurance corporations in the U.S.A. that they are under investigation regarding employee wages and benefits.

What a “low blow” by the Obama Democrats and their consultant firms to intimidate the private health insurance companies. Do you think it has anything to do with a government-run health insurance program? You can call it Coop or Pub Opt or whatever you want.

It translates to a U.S. government-run State as in Socialism. We will have a centralized national power governing and deciding what is best for the people. U.S. business and capitalism will be squashed by Obama-Rahm big government and even bigger taxes will be imposed on the working people. Your wages will go to the government-run State.

There is so much misinformation and ignorance in both camps that I can't even begin to list them. This is a serious NATIONAL concern and vitriol gets us nowhere. Come on people! Close your mouths and open your minds and we might find a viable solution that benefits all Americans.

Posted by: deborahfitzpat | August 20, 2009 3:05 PM

Q- Would a single-payer plan actually provide a tax cut for Americans?

A- Yes! We spend over $6,000 more per person for health care coverage than any other nation. If we moved to single-payer we can lower the amount spent and give taxpayers a tax cut.

Posted by: Maddogg | August 20, 2009 3:04 PM

Nuzreporter correctly quotes Factcheck.org - if employers close their plans or in 5 years private plans don't meet (higher) standards, then people will have to change to a plan that does meet higher standards (and perhaps costs less)- But that is not Obama's doing. Rather it is because of actions that private sector employers choose to make (or not make). That seems to be a fault of the private sector, not the Federal Government.

Posted by: mkh19411 | August 20, 2009 2:59 PM

Nuzreporter says:
"...the Democrats' health care plan could lead to employers switching plans, and thus forcing their employees into different plans and perhaps to different doctors."

And this is different from the current situation how, exactly?

My company has changed providers 3 times in the last 8 years as it ties to keep premium costs from eating it alive. Our raises have been puny for the same reason.

Grassley is a sad old man whose party is rapidly leaving him behind (or is it ahead). It's just weird to see him referred to as a "moderate." It just shows where the GOP has gone. His reputation in Iowa has been based on his image as your curmudgeonly grandpa, crusty but honest. Now the honesty part is gone and all his is is curmudgeonly.

Posted by: SteveIowa | August 20, 2009 2:47 PM

Oh, and by the way, if you buy your insurance individually, you can keep the plan if you like it. And your employer can keep its coverage if it wants to, but if your employer changes plans, that's his prerogative. No one is forced to change plans any more than they may be now if the employer decides to change the insurance plan. So, what's worse about the universal proposals than the way things are not on that point? Now, that's a fact check.

Posted by: gparker1 | August 20, 2009 2:46 PM

Again, why will he not answer if he and his family will sign up for the government healthcare option? Why will Congress be exempt from signing up for it? If it's not good enough for them it's not good enough for me.

Posted by: nobs4me | August 20, 2009 2:46 PM

In the bill before congress, choice disappears if your coverage changes, your premium changes or your employer changes ANYTHING about current private insurance. OBAMA IS LYING. He is on record going back to 2002 as saying a single payer option is the best way.

Look at states who have already provided "Universal Healthcare"; Hawaii, Massachuttes and Tennessee. It has been a dismal failure in each of these states.

There is NO concensus in ANY poll in favor of government run healthcare.

Posted by: jimbo561 | August 20, 2009 2:46 PM

Only a fool would trust Obama:

"A public option will put the private insurance industry out of business and lead to single-payer. This is not a principled fight. This is a fight about strategy for getting there, and I believe we will."
Rep. Jan Schakowsky

"We're going to get there, over time, slowly, but we'll move away from reliance on employer-based health insurance as we should, but we'll do it in a way that we're not going to frighten people into thinking they're going to lose their private insurance."
Barack Obama

Obama is a liar on this subject and even Factcheck.org who is usually an Obama supporter is pointing it out.

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/story/74035.html
It ended with him bemoaning those who bear "false witness" against his plans — and then making a claim of his own that's been widely shown to be false.

"There's been a lot of misinformation," Obama said, complaining about people who are "bearing false witness."

He said the first thing he wanted to correct was the idea that the proposed overhaul would force some people into different health care plans. "If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan," he said, repeating one of his stock lines.

That's not true, however, according to FactCheck.org, an independent truth squad run by the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania.

"He can't make that promise to everyone," concluded FactCheck's analysis, one of several that point out that the Democrats' health care plan could lead to employers switching plans, and thus forcing their employees into different plans and perhaps to different doctors.

THIS IS IT!

More than two thirds of the American people want a single payer health care system. And if they cant have a single payer system 76% of all Americans want a strong government-run public option on day one (85% of democrats, 71% of independents, and 60% of republicans). Basically everyone.

AND NO INSURANCE MANDATES OR TAX PAYER SUBSIDIES WITHOUT A STRONG GOVERNMENT-RUN PUBLIC OPTION ON DAY ONE! An insurance mandate and subsidies without a strong government-run public option choice on day one, would be a DISASTER! And it would be worse than the GREED DRIVEN PRIVATE FOR PROFIT HEALTH INSURANCE HORROR! SHOW you have now. YOU MUST MAKE CERTAIN!! THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN AMERICA.

The healthcare reform bills released by the first two committees of the House Of Representatives are excellent bills as I understand them. They are bills with a strong, robust, government-run public option, and an intelligent, reasonable initial funding plan to cover almost all of the American people. They are carefully written, and thoughtfully constructed, informed, prudent and wise. These bills will save trillions of dollars, and millions of your lives. They are also now supported by the AMA.

These are the type of bills that all Americans can feel good about. And these are the type of bills that have the potential to dramatically improve the quality of healthcare for all Americans. Rich, middle class and poor a like. Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and all other party affiliations. These bills have the potential to dramatically improve the quality of life of every American.

The house healthcare bills released by the first two committees should be viewed as the minimum GOLD STANDARD by which all other proposed healthcare legislation should be judged. All supporters of true high quality healthcare reform should now place all your support behind these healthcare reform bills released by the first two committees of the United States House Of Representatives, as the minimum Gold standard for healthcare reform in America.

You should all now support the first two committees bills with all your might, and all of your unrelenting tenacity. These first two House committees healthcare bills are VERY, VERY GOOD! bills for all of the American people. Fight tooth, and nail for every bit of these bills if you have too. Be aggressive, creative, and relentless for these bills.

From this time forward, go BIGGER and DEEPER with the American people every day until passage of healthcare reform with a robust, government-run public option.

FIGHT!! like your life and the lives of your loved ones depends on it. BECAUSE IT DOES!
