White House Asks Media to Let Obama Girls Enjoy Their Vacation

By Michael D. Shear
The White House pleaded Friday for privacy for President Obama's daughters as the Obama family prepared for a week's vacation on Martha's Vineyard, Mass.

Press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters that Malia, 11, and Sasha, 8, are fair game when they are at public events with their parents, like a run to the ice cream shop.

But he practically begged that the girls be regarded as off-limits when they are with friends or at locations, such as the beach, where they might be seen from far away.

"It is our strong hope and desire that you all, during this family vacation, will respect the privacy of Sasha and Malia," he said. "If the girls are out and about on Martha's Vineyard without their parents, it's our strong desire that you give them their space, their privacy, and you do not cover two little girls who are on vacation."

The plea seemed particularly targeted at local media, who are intensely interested in the Obamas' first presidential visit to the island, and the paparazzi, who have sought to photograph the Obamas from far distances on other vacations.

In part to ease the media's desire for information about the vacation, White House officials added a local print "pool." That will allow journalists from small, New England outlets, who don't normally travel with the president, to see some of his movements up close.

And Gibbs promised that officials would strive to provide reporters with some "readouts" about what Obama is up to when he is behind the walls of the compound that he has rented for the week.

Obama will be staying at Blue Heron Farm, a 28-acre waterfront estate that should provide him plenty of opportunity to relax without having to emerge onto the rest of the island.

Back on topic: pResident Obama has asked that the press leave HIM alone for a week too, not just the girls. This should get interesting.

I care, so you statement that "nobody else cares either" is false. That's all I was proving.

Fine, fine, just as long as we can get a new pic of the Prez in his swim trunks - love those abs!!! Can't deny it, we've got the hottest President in the whole world!!!

Posted by: JadedJade | August 23, 2009 3:13 PM

Ok, people, let's remember GWB spent a third of his presidency at his ranch or Camp David (a matter of public record)...Obama seems to be at the White House most weekends. He doesn't have a ranch or a family compound in Kennebunkport to stay on vacation, and some of his staff and the secret service have to travel with him. Your typical Days Inn can't accommodate a group of that size. I expect he'll continue to get his daily briefings everyday.

Posted by: RationalDem | August 22, 2009 9:31 AM

I voted for him, i wish him well in his private life, But i do wish he would be more focus on the issue,s at hand.Being president is a full time job.

Unlike Palin, Obama doesn't use his daughters as human shields .

CS_GUY and Jake D are examples on why parents should NEVER SHAKE A BABY.

And CS_GUY, so what is Obama? Jesus, Hitler, a monkey, a muslin, marx, Satan, and now George Jefferson? Pick a lane 4sshole.

Posted by: Joseph-IraqVet | August 22, 2009 12:38 AM

Wake up sheeple! Those aren't little girls, they're secret midgets, and I bet they're spies for the commies! Didn't you people watch "The Orphan?"

Posted by: oiuoiklashdfkjhaskjdh | August 21, 2009 10:49 PM

How many days has Obama actually worked? It seems like every week he is on vacation. This is really pathetic. We have an incompetent clown in the White House. It did not take long for the wheels to come off his wagon. It is going to be a long time until 2012, we can only hope our Country will survive that long. On second thought, maybe Obama should go on permanent vacation. It is doubtful anyone would miss what little contribution he makes.

You are posting on a public forum -- if you wanted to ask a "private" conversation with someone, I suggest you ask for his/her e-mail address -- I simply wanted you to know that many of us are disgusted by pResident Obama and not "enjoying" it one bit.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're just pretending not to understand. I didn't say I was having a private conversation. I said I didn't ask and don't care what your opinion of the president is. You said:

So, JakeD,
Whether or not you are disgusted, like being so, or dislike it, is all still completely irrelevant. That you somehow think that my statement is a canard because you personally don't embody it, implies that you think I was talking about you. Nope. Better luck next time.

Posted by: lostinthemiddle | August 21, 2009 9:04 PM

Do you want me to answer your questions?

Posted by: JakeD | August 21, 2009 8:44 PM

fr JakeD:

>...Oh, yeah, Chelsea Clinton was "well-behaved" (NOT!).

You never saw/read reports of Ms. Clinton getting DRUNK on FAKE ID while underage, did you? NO. Never saw/read of her playing dodge the Secret Service did you? NO. The bush babies should have been trained better, but unfortunately, the apple didn't fall far from the tree with "daddy".

FIRST AMENDMENT "Freedom of the Press" (you'd think that a Constitutional Law Professor would know something about that ; )

Posted by: JakeD | August 21, 2009 7:23 PM

Back on topic, the Obamas knew what they were getting into, so I dispute that either Sasha or Malia shouldn't be followed, photographed, or (God forbid) even asked a question or two on public property. Welcome to the big leagues, girls!

JakeD. Is it possible that you can't read? No, clearly you can. So why do you keep responding to things I've addressed to someone else as if I'm talking to you? I said that thornegp1 enjoys being disgusted by the President. What you enjoy or don't enjoy couldn't possibly be more irrelevant. No one asked; no one cares.

Obama has to fly all over the world because GWB ruined our relations with most countries on the planet and in most cases did not bother to visit there. Obama's first four years will be involved in cleaning up all the messes that Bush created. That is home and abroad. Incompetent people cause their organizations a great deal of money both at the time and afterwards undoing what has been done. Bush the president who ushered in the Great Recession.

Thank you Mr Obama for being so patient with your opposition despite the fact that most of them are your intellectual inferiors.

Posted by: Gator-ron | August 21, 2009 6:42 PM

John Roberts messed up the oath of office because he gets flustered when he is on television. Roberts also proved that Obama could do his job better than he could.

Posted by: Gator-ron | August 21, 2009 6:33 PM

jarvarisgoss:

Let's assume I am Chief Justice Roberts, then. What do you suggest I can legally do to stop Obama from being sworn in (other than try to mess up his Oath of Office)?

Alex511:

Oh, yeah, Chelsea Clinton was "well-behaved" (NOT!).

Posted by: JakeD | August 21, 2009 6:28 PM

Don't you guys think if he was here illegal or not able to be President. Chief Justice Roberts would have put the brakes on his election. The Chief Justice is a Republican. He would have loved to put a halt to Obama being President.

fr JakeD:

>...(remember how the press hounded after everything Jenna and Barbara Bush did?)....

The bush brats were NOT "hounded". At the time dumbya was in the White House, they were a constant pain for the Secret Service, by playing "ditch the Secret Service and get drunk on FAKE ID's while underage". I see Malia and Sasha as two well-behaved young ladies, like Chelsea Clinton was. It's too bad the bush babies didn't take lessons from Ms. Clinton; they could have used them.

Good points. But, it seems as if "nellie3ster" thinks that they are reimbursing costs for this vacation. I doubt it, but let's see if she actually provides any back-up for that claim.

Here's how much we taxpayers are spending to run the White House / fly pResident Obama all over the world:

what a coincidence...10 day vacation (run and hide) after announcing that the 10 year projected deficit isn't 7 trillion..but is going to be 9-10 trillion.....when is obama going to push another bill making it mandatory that families have at least 9 kids..to help pay for this incompetent lunatics spending.

The hutzpah of this Obama clan is over the top. It's the economy stupid. Don't you get it. I'd love to take my family around the world on million dollar vacations. This is a historic time, low key should be on the agenda not the flamboyant life-style he feels he deserves, and on our dime. Now, shut up stupid I'm the boss.

Seriously, though, it costs us taxpayers more than $2 BILLION per year to fly Air Force One all over the world and run the White House -- shouldn't Obama be cutting back on travel during this recession -- you know, leading by example?

JakeD and CS_Guy

What’s up with all the animosity directed at two little girls...don't you think young children should be allowed to enjoy their summer vacation?

Posted by: brdieR | August 21, 2009 3:41 PM

So long as the children are as young as they are, they should be afforded some privacy. And CS_GUY, you're clearly just here to make off-topic and outlandish remarks about the President. Calling him George Jefferson? Really??

Posted by: JakeD | August 21, 2009 3:06 PM

His kids have enough trouble with the parents they have. Leave them alone, but whatever you do, do not let up on him for even one second. We know he doesn't run his family,or the nation, with anything resembling courage. Real fathers don't befriend terrorist, put their job over their kids, or lie whenever their mouths are open. He truly is "George Jefferson".
