Conservative Radio Host Smerconish to the White House

Updated 9:28 a.m. 8/20/09
By Garance Franke-Ruta
President Obama has invited conservative Philadelphia talk radio host Michael A. Smerconish to broadcast his nationally-syndicated radio show from the White House Thursday afternoon, a first for radio during his administration.

Smerconish, who unusually among conservative radio hosts endorsed Obama for president in 2008, teased the move on his Twitter account Wednesday morning, writing, "Haven't tweeted for a while....but this is big...making major announcement on air at 730am....clue: fireside chats"

A major topic of discussion on the show, which will involve a call-in component, will be the president's health care reform efforts, which have draw increasing criticism from conservatives and independent voters. "There are no ground rules. I am not prescreening with the White House on what the subject matter will be," Smerconish said in a statement announcing the show. But he used his morning and afternoon programs Wednesday to seek out listeners with "pointed direct and substantive questions about Health Care," he said.

"We're looking for questions that have not already been asked," he added.

Smerconish told The Post that he had submitted multiple interview requests to the White House through his publisher over a period of months before his producer got a call last Thursday inviting him to come down to do his show from the White House. He said he did not know why his request was granted now.

Michael A. Smerconish

Smerconish gained fame for his morning radio show, which airs on CBS RADIO's WPHT-AM, and launched his nationally-syndicated afternoon show on Feb. 2, 2009. It airs between noon and 3 p.m. Eastern on 50 radio stations across the country, including WOR-AM in New York, KFWB in Los Angeles and WHFS 1580 AM in Washington, D.C., where it also reruns at 9 p.m.

"He's the only talk host in America to do the show from the White House," boasted Amy Bolton, senior vice president and general manager of news and talk for Dial-Global, which syndicates Smerconish's show in partnership with CBS Radio. "He's the first and so far the only one."

A the White House, Smerconish will have "a twenty minute live, one on one interview with President Barack Obama," according to Dial-Global. The interview itself is set to air at 1:10 p.m. Eastern on the radio and online.

Smerconish is also a regular contributor to MSNBC.

Smerconish does not claim to be a conservative. I have listened to him many times here in Philly and I assure you he leans conservative, but is more an opportunist. He is in it for the money. Either that or he's a just a lousy judge of character. I stopped listening to him after he supported Obama.

If the bill is passed it would required ever one to join the plan. If you don’t join you will be fined! Also it will include illegal’s plan at no cost to them. Also any tourist can come to the US and get free health care. Yes I agree we ne reform but do it in baby steps. Look at the reason why health care is so expensive! Most of the people in Washington are lawyers that’s why tort reform is omitted from the bill and if this such a great bill all, of congress should be mandated to join the plan as well.

Who's heard of this talk show host, outside of the Philadelphia area, that is. No one who listens to any of the well known talk show conservatives would take this interview seriously.

Obama couldn't have done a talk show with any of the "big boys" because he couldn't have stood up to the hard questions. Frankly, the President is so overexposed at this point that people are beginning to be sick of the sight and the sound of him!

Why does he keep taking to the airwaves? He has nothing NEW to say, he continues to repeat the same message even denying that items which appear in writing in the health care (House Bill)are true. He's shouting into the wind, there have been so many lies that we've ceased listening.

To those Moveon.org "members"...

No one ever said President Obama wants to euthanize "grandma"!!! What we do object to is government "FORCED" end of life counciling. It's since been removed because of the onerous language and potential abuse. BTW - The AARP does NOT support this bill.
(Section 1233 of H.R. 3200)

Nobody is claiming that HR3200 is going to elminate private insurance and force you into a government plan...at least immediately. What HR3200 does say is IF you have a change in your benefits or policy, you have 12 months to go to a Govt plan. So, will it immediately and directly eliminate your private insurance? No. Will HR3200 eventually eliminate private insurance? YES!

Nobody ever said President Obama wants to implement Soviet-style rationing. But,
the truth is HR3200 will expand access to health insurance and burden an already limited resource - Doctor/Hospitals. Nothing in HR3200 addresses this. Also, HR3200 adds 30,000,000 patients to Medicare while slashing Medicare budgets by $500,000,000 over the next 10 years. How can you add coverage and take away funding and claim there will be more services?? To claim this, is a flat out denial of the principles of economics - supply and demand.

Nobody said Obama is secretly plotting to cut senior citizens' Medicare benefits. But, HR3200 says that. $500,000,000 cuts over ten years to be exact.

We have been saying Obama's health care plan will bankrupt America.
Right now, we spend more than $2 trillion dollars a year on health care. HR3200 ADDS, according to the CBO, another $1.7 Trillion!!!

President Obama claims his reform plans would be fully paid for over 10 years and not add a penny to the deficit. YET, he hasn't been able to articulate HOW he thinks this is going to happen. Remember, the non-partisan GOVT organization CBO is suggesting HR3200 will cost $1.7 Trillion MORE than what we are spending now on healthcare. Also remember Medicare's estimates in the beginning were off by 9 TIMES MORE! If the CBO is wrong and HR3200 ends up costing $13 Trillion...America will go bankrupt.

Jack Smith...I urge you, like I urged our congressional representatives...READ THE BILL! You are spewing misinformation that is just not supported in HR3200!!!!

You claim this bill will:
"These bills will save trillions of dollars, and millions of your lives."
WHAT!?!?! Didn't you read that the bill will CUT Medicare spending while adding another 30 Million patients? How will that save lives? NOWHERE does HR3200 state that it will save "Trillions"! In fact, the CBO estimates that HR3200 will COST $1.6 Trillion MORE!!!!!! The CBO was also WRONG when estimating Medicare costs when it was first introduced. The CBO was wrong by 9 TIMES!!! Medicare is 9 TIMES more expensive than what they estimated!!!

Get the facts yourself and READ THE BILL!!!

Jack Smith...where in the heck did you dream this up? I told you to stop smokin' crack!

"More than two thirds of the American people want a single payer health care system. And if they cant have a single payer system 76% of all Americans want a strong government-run public option on day one (85% of democrats, 71% of independents, and 60% of republicans). Basically everyone."

Where???? Move-on.org? Whitehouse.gov? Where??!!! Show me the facts!!! Stop spreading this misinformation!! freakin' lying radicals!

Posted by: NO-bama | August 20, 2009 2:41 PM | Report abuse

THIS IS IT!

More than two thirds of the American people want a single payer health care system. And if they cant have a single payer system 76% of all Americans want a strong government-run public option on day one (85% of democrats, 71% of independents, and 60% of republicans). Basically everyone.

AND NO INSURANCE MANDATES OR TAX PAYER SUBSIDIES WITHOUT A STRONG GOVERNMENT-RUN PUBLIC OPTION ON DAY ONE! An insurance mandate and subsidies without a strong government-run public option choice on day one, would be a DISASTER! And it would be worse than the GREED DRIVEN PRIVATE FOR PROFIT HEALTH INSURANCE HORROR! SHOW you have now. YOU MUST MAKE CERTAIN!! THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN AMERICA.

The healthcare reform bills released by the first two committees of the House Of Representatives are excellent bills as I understand them. They are bills with a strong, robust, government-run public option, and an intelligent, reasonable initial funding plan to cover almost all of the American people. They are carefully written, and thoughtfully constructed, informed, prudent and wise. These bills will save trillions of dollars, and millions of your lives. They are also now supported by the AMA.

These are the type of bills that all Americans can feel good about. And these are the type of bills that have the potential to dramatically improve the quality of healthcare for all Americans. Rich, middle class and poor a like. Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and all other party affiliations. These bills have the potential to dramatically improve the quality of life of every American.

The house healthcare bills released by the first two committees should be viewed as the minimum GOLD STANDARD by which all other proposed healthcare legislation should be judged. All supporters of true high quality healthcare reform should now place all your support behind these healthcare reform bills released by the first two committees of the United States House Of Representatives, as the minimum Gold standard for healthcare reform in America.

You should all now support the first two committees bills with all your might, and all of your unrelenting tenacity. These first two House committees healthcare bills are VERY, VERY GOOD! bills for all of the American people. Fight tooth, and nail for every bit of these bills if you have too. Be aggressive, creative, and relentless for these bills.

From this time forward, go BIGGER and DEEPER with the American people every day until passage of healthcare reform with a robust, government-run public option.

FIGHT!! like your life and the lives of your loved ones depends on it. BECAUSE IT DOES!

Liberals are back to their same ugly, mean-spirited tactics seen during campaign last year. Ugly, ignorant, mean. It quieted down after Obama was elected, but now they're back. Just goes to show you, you can change the environment, you can give them something to be proud about, but it doesn't last long...they're still the same ignorant, close-minded people who don't want to listen to any other viewpoint.

You claim:
"republican party's worship of money, and hatred of the poor and middle class sick and afflicted"
Show me one credible republican website that supports this...In fact, based on Joe Bidens charitable giving, I'd have to say he and his party fit your description:

2006 Adjusted Gross Income. $248,459

You claim:
"Millions of American citizens have faced REPUBLICAN DEATH PANELS."
Wow...show me a credible website that proves this...

You claim:
"death panels are insurance companies refusing to insure Millions of Americans because of pre-existing conditions"
You really are misinformed. Show me anything that supports this. Insurance companies CHARGE more for pre-existing conditions and some may not cover certain conditions, but I can assure you ANYONE can get coverage if they are willing to pay for it.

You Claim:
"those DEATH PANELS which are sponsored by the party of american fascism, the republicans..are GUARDED BY THE WORST BUREAUCRATS IN THE WORLD..INSURANCE COMPANY SALESPERSONS, POLICY UNDERWRITERS, AND CLAIM EVALUATERS..DEATH PANELS EXIST TODAY..AND THEIR EXISTENCE IS GUARDED BY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!!!"

alysheba you are in a dream world devoid of fact. You said "As UPS and FedEx show, a gov't run program will not destroy an industry that is giving people the goods and services that they need at a competitive price."

This is just a regurgitation of another stupid Obama comment. Let me remind you and Obama of some facts:
UPS and Fedex were created out of a void created by the failings of the United Postal Service (USPS). If you recall from recent history, the USPS could not deliver a package to the correct address or on time. Behold, the private sector stepped in (UPS, Fedex, and others) and PROVIDED what the government could not. That is; efficiencies and a product people want.

Also, the GAO just announced that the USPS is going to LOSE $7,000,000,000 this year!
That's our freakin' tax dollars!!

I think your comment gives credence to a reason NOT to let government interfere with healthcare IN ANY WAY!

I don't think Obama is wise to use "competition" in the postal industry as a poster child success story.

congress tried to pass a procalmation to denounce France for naming a street after this cop killer. His name is well known through out washington, chicago and hollywood.
you gave him a pass
2# Smerconish helped write a book with Maureen Falkner the widow of Danny.
3# you need to brush up on what a real conservative is, wake up you live in the city where I was raised and the founding fathers struggled to make sure we never fall in the wrong hands. Read Liberty and tyranny.

gtc360 - I don't even know where to start with you. You obviously don't watch MSNBC, go figure, since it's actually "fair and balanced" unlike the conservative talking points circus over at Fox News. Pat Buchanan is on all the time, and Joe Scarborough hosts "Morning Joe". I like them both, Pat adds some pizazz when he's on Hardball with Chris Matthews.

Just because Smerconish voted for President Obama, doesn't mean he's not a conservative. That's an extremely dumb assumption. And endorsing him at the end of the campaign goes to show you that, just like General Colin Powell, the decision was a tough choice, but a choice based on who was and is best for the country at a time of crisis. It's true change, not to sound cliche, that we're voting someone different to the WH, someone that has a different vision for America unlike any we've seen since JFK.

Unfortunately, the right has grown so accustomed to being negative and pessimistic, no matter what the discussion is about. No matter what good the President brings to this great country, you'll always find a reason and way to complain instead of support someone actually trying to help the American people. But I guess you'll never realize that, since Obama is Hitler and he's a "socialist" and wants to destroy this country. What a bunch of rubbish bull.

Perhaps there is a conservative smart enough to know what the terms "socialist" and "socialism" really mean.

Socialism:
An economic system in which the production and distribution of goods are controlled substantially by the government rather than by private enterprise, and in which cooperation rather than competition guides economic activity.

As President Obama is saying that private insurance companies will still have their place in the market, there is no socialism involved in his health care reform. Any insurance company is welcome to be in a competitive market, all they need to do is be willing to lower their prices to remain competitive. As UPS and FedEx show, a gov't run program will not destroy an industry that is giving people the goods and services that they need at a competitive price.

Dear supsteeleliotknights2 ,

You stated "It is so nice to have a president whose reputation is not besmirched with scandals." Are you for real? Chicago political thugs are rejoicing from your words!

When you look at anyone if you look hard enough you will find the "bad" in them just like if you look hard enough you'll find the "good". With Obama you really didn't have to look that hard to find the "bad"... but that is more of his personal affilliations and poor personal judgement to advance his career. I don't think I need to recount all of them.

As far as his policies I don't think he has ill will towards people. I think he has a mind-set that Govt knows best and Govt need to be the provider for all. I have the mind set that individuals make the best choices for themselves given the opportunity to do so.

There is no way the absolute spending frenzy he has been on can be sustained or will get us out of debt or out of a bad economy. Things are cyclical and will turn around. It is unfortunate that the Govt had to step in and bail somethings out. I'd even agree that there was little choice with some of it.

But, healthcare reform is the last nail in the coffin for most Americans. Enough already. Put the check-book back in your pocket and stop spending what you know you can't pay for. Adding taxes onto small businesses to pay for it will sink the economy. These employers will lay-off, cut staff, cut healthcare and put all workers on the Govt plan. This only makes the situation worse.

The reason I'd like to see him debate a Hannity or Rush is it would make awesome TV. Not that I am a fanatic about either one. I listen occasionally but I also listen to NPR. And, if Rush and Hannity or so whacked out BHO should be able to decimate them and expose them for the frauds they are.. right?

Posted by: tbastian | August 19, 2009 5:27 PM | Report abuse

These idiotic stunts only prove that the people's concerns are correct. If you really want to convince people of the "goodness" in your healthcare bill, then invite a real, wellknown, trusted, well established conservative radio host to the Whitehouse. Another puppet is just not convincing at all. It will be another demonstration of what questions will not be asked and/or answered. It smells like another plant.
My first question is: Why is Section XIII of the Stimulus Bill in that bill? The Stimulus Bill was so urgent that it could not wait one day but there was enough time to stuff 200 pages (1/3 of the Stimulus Bill) of healthcare in it. How is that possible?
HB3200 cannot be intelligenly be discussed and/or evaluated without Section XIII of the Stimulus Bill. The combination of the two JUSTIFIES the concerns.
The only reason for this to provide deniability. You claim that it is not in the Healthcare Bill when you hide it in the Stimulus Bill.
Your open and transparent adminstration has cheated and misled the people again.
I am against any bill bill that allows for exemptions by congress. If it is not good enough for Congress then it is not good enough for me.
Why is Congress always excluded from the suffering they impose on people? There is only one logical reason; they know the suffering is coming!

OMG, Smerconish in the White House, maybe the CIA will shoot him for being a Russian spy ?

This guy is not a conservative, that's for sure! He's been filling in on a Boston station the last week or so and he sounds like a typical "moderate" aka "liberal" to me. He is completely bowled over by Obama's rhetoric and thinks he means well. He won't let any callers use the words socialist or socialism, even though they are very accurate, because he thinks it is "mean spirited." Obama will chew this guy up and spit him out and Smerconish won't even know what happened.

Michael Smirconish a "conservative" ????

Is that how they are billing this?

Now I see why they picked Smirconish.

First off, he is no conservative. He voted for Obama and waited until the last minute to make his big announcment.

He's seems to be a nice guy when it comes to the Phillies, sports, etc but he's certainly NOT conservative philosophically.

I can't say I have ever heard him say anything critical of Obama either before or after the election.

"get Rush in the Whitehouse for his show!"

YAY!!! However, you can be sure Obama would not face Rush one-on-one.

Bring Hannity or Rush to the WH and then it would be news. Never heard of this guy at all... wonder why? BHO wouold never entertain having a "real interview with someone who could out match him or seriously challenge him in debate. How can you use a teleprompter in that case. Perhaps the 3-4 second speaking burst and silent ..ummm.... pauses wouldn't go over so well with someone who can think and speak more clearly and with real substance to their words.

"Conservative Radio Host Smerconish". That's a joke.

At one point Benedict Arnold was a patriot... and so was Matt Cassel

Lets see, he endorced Obama for pres. as a so-called conservative, and now he gets to go to the whitehouse. Obama will have the questions handed to him on paper ahead of time, no need for the teleprompter! The speach writter will still be needed though.
