OAK BLUFFS, Mass. -- President Obama issued Wednesday a presidential proclamation on death of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, calling him "one of the most accomplished Americans ever to serve our democracy."

The proclamation orders that flags be flown at half-staff "at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset on August 30, 2009."

The order extends the flag directive for "all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations."

The action is the first of what will be many official recognitions of Kennedy's life and career. It was released by the White House even as Obama spent time with his family at a private beach on the island.

I didn't like what this man did but we need to respect him now that he has passed on.

No thanks, erichk1 and DC2Amsterdam. I could argue there were over 100 "greater Senators" and accomplished citizens to serve our democracy (technically, our Republic). No disrespect to Sen. Kennedy intended.

Ted Kennedy was a man with faults and convictions. He served the USA for a lietime of such convictions, he never swayed in his political viewsm he was respected and known for all his deeds, even the one bad one. His brothers died for this country and he served all his life for this country, his suffering is over and he deserves all the respect of this nation. All the complainers should try to achieve his accomplishments, until then shut up and mourn the loss of the man to his nation.

My god all the same nasty-grimies gathered together here just like at The Fix. And leading the pack is that stupid jerk JakeD with his short list of routines. We've seen them all a thousand times and he's too stupid to come up with any new ones.

You'd think that even disagreeable ideologues could take a break from their recitations to honor the passing of an old and dedicated public servant. Liberals were able to honor Nixon or Reagan, but when a liberal passes we see such ugliness and lack of humanity that it really makes one wonder if what we call "conservatives" these days are even human.

So far it seems all the comments should be reported as offensive.
I will comment that the flags flying at half-mast that is truly an honor; and this is indeed the honor that our President of the U.S. of A. should bestow on someone who has served our country so long and so well!!!
My prayers and thoughts are with the whole of the Kennedy family this evening. We have lost one great man - he carried on for all his brothers - those named Joe, John and Bobby...but more he carried on for EVERY Brother & Sister...even those he never met or knew their names.
God Bless Ted Kennedy - he is back with his brothers & sisters now - rest in peace - at least we had him for the many years that we did.

President Obama:

BAN microwave / laser "directed energy weapons" use (read: TORTURE / slow-kill homicide) on American citizens...

...and warrantless GPS tracking/surveillance of unjustly targeted Americans...

...the electronic backbone of a Bush-Cheney spawned American Gestapo that is now operating on YOUR watch.

Ted Kennedy was NOT "one of the greatest senators of our time and one of the most accomplished citizens to serve our democracy". Hell, is Obama even a natural-born citizen and therefore "President" authorized to sign such a proclamation?
