Ramadan Dinner at the White House: The Guest List

Updated 7:38 p.m.
By Michael A. Fletcher
President Obama will host a White House dinner Tuesday night celebrating Ramadan, the Muslim holy month during which the faithful fast from dawn to sunset each day.

Obama will be joined at the dinner by three Cabinet members, five members of Congress, nearly two dozen foreign diplomats, and 33 community leaders. Among the invited diplomats are the Israeli ambassador and the chief of mission for the Palestinian Liberation Organization, as well as the Indian and Pakistani ambassadors to the United States.

Asked about the unusual step of inviting the Israeli ambassador to the dinner, the White House described it as a small part of the event. "Tonight was an opportunity to continue the tradition of hosting iftars at the White House, while celebrating Muslim Americans, and tonight's dinner is made up of a diverse group of individuals from business leaders to members of the US military," White House spokesman Thomas Vietor said. "Additionally, we thought it was an opportunity to reach out to ambassadors of nations with sizable Muslim populations, including the ambassadors of France, the [United Kingdom], India, and Israel."

Obama intends to highlight one story in particular: that of Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, a young woman who broke high school basketball records in Massachusetts before heading to the University of Memphis -- while wearing a traditional hijab.

Obama, who held an intimate Passover Seder at the White House in April, will host the dinner beginning at 8 p.m. tonight. Ramadan, which started on Aug. 22, will end on Sept. 20.

On Aug. 21, the president released a Ramadan video message to Muslims around the world.

George W. Bush held several Ramadan dinners at the White House when he was the president. This tolerance in the Whitehouse has existed before and undoubtedly should be highly appreciated.

But I'm a muslim, and to be honest, for me the "H." in his middle name is the only link between Obama and me.

"Those that danced in the streets, honked their horns in glee, and were totally ecstatic over some news a few years back. 9/11/01."

Misused footage, try again.

Let's top this with something the media is not bringing to light: Bill 1388. Anyone remember Hamas? Those that danced in the streets, honked their horns in glee, and were totally ecstatic over some news a few years back. 9/11/01.
We aren't just hosting a dinner. We are giving them transportation, food and lodging to come to the USA as "refugees". They just won the taxpayer lottery to the tune of 20.3 million $$$$. Why isn't the media commenting on this? www.thefederalregister.com/d.p/2009-02-04-E9-2488

Diskipulo:

Are you SURE about that?

Posted by: JakeD | September 2, 2009 12:22 PM

I am trying to understand why The Washington Post did not make a big deal over the fact that George Bush also hosted Ramadan dinners. I don't care if Obama wants to do it, just don't make him out to be the saint and George W. the devil. Furthermore, why don't you list that four out of five of the Senators are Democrats? I noticed you only indicate when someone is a Republican. I think you need to balance that out a bit. Maybe it should be 3 Republicans and 3 Democrats.

Posted by: gem803 | September 2, 2009 11:59 AM

There will be Christmas at the White House. George W. Bush hosted eight Ramadan dinners during his two terms.

So saniyyah, you think Americans are funny?
I'll bet you don't live in one of our little war zones do you.

Posted by: shrink2 | September 2, 2009 9:35 AM

Wow! Watching and listening to the American people since July 2008 has really been like watching a comedy show. Do you really listen to yourself before you make a complete babbling idiot of yourself? Do you see what everyone else sees?

Please step back and watch the show. You will be really disgusted! It is time to check yourself before you wreck yourself!

I read a lot of the knee-jerk often bigoted reactionary comments and think to myself, "We can't possibly have this many stupid Americans every day!" and then it makes me wonder if it's simply puppet commentators running some long-term new-age swiftboat campaign. The sky seems to be falling every day since Jan 20, yet my actual life has never been better. Go figure.

Posted by: Crucialitis | September 2, 2009 8:19 AM

Wow! TheWhite house and Congress is out of control. Hang in! it will end, armed with the Consitstution and your vote we will win! Freedom is the greatest gift we got and many die so we my be free.
Mr President how many wars have you served in? Freedom was given to you and you never has to put your life on the line for privilege to SERVE as President of United States.

Where in your public school education did you liberals get the notion that it is HATEFUL or PHOBIC to vehemently oppose an ideology, religion, or lifestyle? Do you really accept all ideologies as equal? Do you really close your eyes to the injustices, the violence, the mistreatment of women and children condoned by an ideology or religion?

Posted by: patriotrebel | September 1, 2009 11:14 PM

No, but I certainly don't point at every adherent to that faith and call accuse them of being the culprit of said violence and injustice. It's the same as how I don't point at everyone with a rosary thinking they're doctor killers.

Part of making progress with people is actually opening your mind to their way of life. Something too many commenters here and elsewhere fail epically to do on a daily basis.

The same folks who suffered greatly with BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome) now suffer just as intensly with OAS (Obama Arrangement Syndrome) - The syndrome requires that people interpret or ignore events in a manner that reinforces their preconceived, and rigid, notions about Obama.

bob59 asked, "What are the odds Obama will announce he's 'converting' to the Muslim religion?"

---

Nil. Obama converted to Hinduism and is a practicing Hindu idol worshiper. He carries with him at all times the image of the Hindu pagan "god" Hanuman.

For proof, just google together the search terms: Obama Hanuman

or simply visit:

Maybe the Muslims will remind Obama the deaths of over 51 million American babies to abortion is wrong. Obama is an abortion supporter.

What are the odds Obama will announce he's "converting" to the Muslim religion?

he told the instructor he does not have to worry about those landinglessons

by his actions he will protect women from hair dyes and wrinkle creams

Go away; you make Islam look bad.

Good people are trying to ignore you,
We either have to ignore you or the nut jobs will want to kill you,
do you Islamists understand that?

GEE ZEBRA4...YOU MUST BE OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE REAL WORLD! HEY, IGNORANCE IS BLISS. OH...I FORGOT, WE CANNOT PUT DOWN THIS PRESIDENT BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE RACIST! SERIOUSLY, YOU ARE CORRECT, I HAVE NO SHAME PUTTING DOWN A PRESIDENT WHO IS RAMMING SOCIALISM DOWN OUR THROATS AND EVERYDAY DREAMS UP NEW WAYS TO TAKE AWAY OUR FREEDOMS AT AN ENORMOUS EXPENSE TO OUR CHILDREN'S CHILDREN. DRINK YOUR KOOLAID FOR OBAMA LIKE A GOOD LIBERAL!

So what is the White House planning for Zoroaster holidays this year? Surely there must be a big party planned for Scientology. The Church of the Infinite Frisbee? We do not want to discriminate.

Soon we will start hearing why it will be acceptbale to allow Sharia Law in this Country under "special circumstances", like they have in England. Read up on Harold Koh who supports that legal argument.

Muslims are children of God too. Listen people, hate takes us no where. What happen to love my brother.

Posted by: swhite5 | September 1, 2009 10:42 PM

YES, our women in the West enjoy "freedom" to be exploited by men. Our young girls are socialized into displaying their bodies to attract men.

They have the freedom to wear bikinis or halters. It does not matter that by the time they get in their 30s they live in constant fear that their husbands will leave them for younger women because they started getting wrinkles or grey hair.

They run to buy wrinkle creams, hair dyes, or get a face lift.

And when their husbands leave them for younger women, they have to run to the singles bars, where unsavory men offer them a drink or two for one night stand.

Then these women write to Dear Abby: "There aren't any decent men out there".

Posted by: zebra4 | September 1, 2009 10:31 PM

What if you people worried about something that matters? Are you done with Army Men?
Ready for your proxy wars, do out of control warriors sound good to you? It sounds like Africa to me.

"Civilian contractors working for the Pentagon in Afghanistan not only outnumber the uniformed troops, according to a report by a Congressional research group, but also form the highest ratio of contractors to military personnel recorded in any war in the history of the United States."

Posted by: shrink2 | September 1, 2009 10:31 PM

Wait, I thought Ramadan was a Muslim holiday in which one fasts from sunrise to sunset?

Isn't having dinner to celebrate the "holy" month of Ramadan considered ironic?

Posted by: member8 | September 1, 2009 10:26 PM

I just love all the slobbering bigots whining about this because Obama is having it.

Holding a Ramadan iftar (breaking of the fast meal) has been an annual feature of the White House since the 90s, including Clinton, Bush and now Obama.

What I find objectionable is not that Obama in particular is hosting it, but the hypocrisy inherent in a murderer of Muslims smiling and giving Ramadan greetings.

But the Islamophobic outpatients are here to protest because it has to do with Islam and because Nurse Ratched has not yet given them meds for the evening.

Posted by: bloggersvilleusa | September 1, 2009 10:21 PM

To all those ISLAMOPHOBES:

Do you know that world's 1.3 B Muslims do not go to work, try to put food on the table, provide shelter for their families, or provide schooling or medical care?

Do you know that Muslims have huge nails, flat faces, short noses, small eyes, and proportinately large heads? They look like demons.

Is this kind of demonizing new in America? Are you happy now? Obviously, you have no shame in putting down our President too.

Posted by: zebra4 | September 1, 2009 10:09 PM

It is true Islam TREATS WOMEN LIKE CHATTEL
but you Christians, you just wish you still could. Ask Sanford. Ask the C Street gang.

Religions are only about controlling womens' bodies and children and therefore: property.

Islam is just a little more primitive at this point. It is a horrible Religion. But in historical context, Hindus (caste slavery), oh it does not matter.

Obama is an idiot liberal.
Conservatives are the problem.

Koranic Law? You mean the law that requires women to cover their bodies and faces in public at all times, including when they are concealing bombs? You mean the law that promotes suicide bombings by cowards hiding behind masks? You mean the law that requires severance of one's hand if caught stealing?

Hum, after some thought, maybe that wouldn't be such a bad idea after all. I can just picture all the dead muslims and blown down mosques (sp)in this country. Maybe tougher laws is just what we need. Burkas to cover up ugly feminists? Wow, I would even vote for that! Pelosi, Finstein, Reno, Ginsburg, Waters and Clinton fully covered in black. What a blessing! I might even bow to the East for that...

Oh, and there's so few women present, aren't they? Oh, that's right. They're Muslims. Women at another table, please.
They sure aren't going to be able to sit boy/girl/boy/girl/boy/girl etc.
Women are very rare in Obama's power circle and he golfs to make sure it stays that way.
Oink, oink. All 3 major religions loathe women and place them in subservient positions.
Way to go, Obama. Celebrate that!

Posted by: Beckola | September 1, 2009 9:15 PM

He is a communist while also a fascist, a black power socialist, he is pro-Hispanic, a racist, a Muslim, he loves Jewish bankers (even though his Pastor Reverend Wright, oh never mind) and I've heard he favors Israel, no matter what (Rham Emmanuel's dad, etc.).

I am trying to understand.

What is that the Republican position?

Posted by: shrink2 | September 1, 2009 9:15 PM

I don't want ANY religion in my government. They are tax-exempt rich, amazingly rich, organizations and most are knee deep in evil--child molesters, anyone? Terrorists? Doctor-killers?
Why should they be in the White House? What's their agenda? When is the Atheist and Agnostic Dinner? When is the Philosopher Supper? The Scientists Soiree?
No? Why is he kowtowing to religion so much? It has no place in Government. But he's inviting it to dinner.
And the only church he knows is the church of the Screaming Bigot, Rev. Wright.

Posted by: Beckola | September 1, 2009 9:12 PM

The LA Times refused to print my comments.
So, I'll try here.
If it quacks like a duck, walks like a duck and looks like a duck it must be a duck. Obama said in December that Michele would be picking out a church, not him. Well, it's 8 months later and we're all agasp waiting to see which one she picks!
It looks like Barack has now taking the lead. None of the US holidays or Christian Holidays were observed in his household. But we will invited muslims to dinner at the White House and celebrate a muslim holiday. That tells all of us Christians that the muslims are here to stay. 9 million now in the USA and unfettered Green cards for the rest. We're looking forward to Turkey Day and Christmas to see if they observe them. Aren't we?

I think that the Ramadan dinner is a great idea, a commendable show of fairness and even handedness. And,folks, For those who made comments on the subject, Ramadan fasting ends at nightfall. Actually when you can't tell a white thread from a black thread but, close enough. And, also, they invited the Israeli ambassador and two rabbis. OK. Now, how many Arab ambassadors and muslin clerics did they invite to the "Intimate" Seder celebration? Anyone?

OBAMA MOCKS BIBLE, WHILE EMBRACING RAMADAN

You-tube, a internet website which posts viewer videos, has a speech Obama made on June 30, 2006 mocking the Bible books of Deuteronomy and Leviticus by name.

Obama's political demise will be linked to those very books of the Bible he mocked.

JaxMax will document how and when.

Obama dining with Muslims may cause many Americans to lose their lives, malignant hypertension and perhaps even status epilepticus is a serious risk here. Republicans, take your medicine.

Laughing at Republican irrelevance pretty much all day every day since Sarah Palin showed up...is distracting me from being annoyed by Obama's political decisions.

Posted by: shrink2 | September 1, 2009 8:42 PM

While the president's revolutionary leftist posture would seem to argue against this, his sensitivity to Ramadan brings hope that eventually by executive order we'll have Koranic Law in America.

This deprived the Muslim world of a stable and centralized authority, and much of the chaos that we're living in today is the result of that."

Ah B. Hussein Obama is getting back to his Muslim roots. However, after 20 years of listening to Reverend Wright and apparently not having a clue as to what Wright as shouting about I hope he puts more effort into the so-called Religion of Peace. If the RoP doesn't meet his needs perhaps he can call on one of the Hawaiian animistic deities.

Posted by: fenoy | September 1, 2009 8:31 PM

Gee, I hope he doesn't flatter the audience with more fairy tails about all the great accomplishments of Muslims, as he did in Cairo.

He may give them credit for the first man powered flight and the invention of the microchip if he thinks it will make them like him more.

And I don't get one poster's comment about Islam being a "proud relgion." Pride is PART OF THE FREAKIN PROBLEM with your religion. Less PRIDE, more TOLERANCE might be something you could try.

This is a great move. Islam is a very proud religion. Humiliation is worse than death. Show a little respect and Islamic moderates will quickly conclude that taking a seat at the table is a better deal than trying to blow up the house.

Our right wing nut jobs will have kittens over this, but as long as they don't actually hurt anyone we should just ignore them. Hopefully Islamic moderates will follow our lead and insist that their nut jobs stop hurting people too.

After Obama observed the Ramadan fast during his "vacation" it only make sense to celebrate his the end of his holy days with a good old fashioned whitehouse Ramadan dinner!

Let me see. Christ was tortured to death by Roman soldiers. I'm just guessing, but I suspect Jesus would be against torture. But Bush is in favor of torture, and Bush SAYS he's Christian. Huh. Obama has taken a stand AGAINST torture, advocated peace and forgiveness, basically reading out of the Bill of Rights and the Book of Matthew, yet you call him the Antichrist. I'm just not seein' it. Could you give me some examples? I seem to remember that the Antichrist was supposed to fool us into following him into false wars, and cause armageddon in the Middle East...no, that was Cheney, not Obama. I dunno, I'm still not seein' it.

Barry is a Muslim. Just another thing that he lied to the American people about.

"He's not a traitor. Just a communist. "

You mean like Ronald Reagan:

"The ultimate cost of the S&L crisis is estimated to have totaled around $160.1 billion, about $124.6 billion of which was directly paid for by the US government—that is, the US taxpayer"

Clearly George Bush and George Carlin are members of the same church, because they both have George in their name.

November 2006, George HW Bush visits Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim nation.

January 2008, George HW Bush visits Egypt.

January 2008, George HW Bush visits Saudi Arabia.

I don't think that McCain would have held a Ramadan dinner ("Bomb, bomb, bomb / bomb, bomb, Iran").

I also think that McCain would not have been eligible to become President, because he was born in Panama.

There was a great photo (in Newsweek, NYT, WAPO) of W strolling hand in hand with Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah in the bluebonnets at the Crawford Ranch in 2005. It's easy to find on google. The Bush family is deep into a couple of enterprises with the Bin Laden family. Eleven members of the Bin Laden family fled Boston the day of the 911 attacks, from the same airport where the hijackers flew from. This was in the papers within a week of the attack. The Bin Laden connection, the Saudi royal connection to the whole Bush family has been known forever- it is presumed to be a major reason why we continue to support that miserable, despotic regime. Obama is inheriting the connection from Bush, and I'll bet his skin crawls when he has to shake hands with the SOB's. Obama, unlike Bush, has no connections to the Saudi oil industry. The Bushes have been attached to Abdullah's teats for decades.

You folks don't understand. This guy is a citizen of the world first. He doesn't give a damn about this country. He keeps putting the USA down on his trips and apologizes for our sins aagainst mankind. If he went to church once a month while he was a desciple of reverend Wrong, he had at least 240 times over the 20 years to Rev Wrong say G--d-- America.., etc/. etc. My folks back in Western Pa, who "Hide behind wheir Bibles and guns, call him the "Anti-Christ." Food for thought at the time his favorables have dropped to 46% from over a 60% high 3 months ago. He's "Goin Down" baby!!

Posted by: veritas7 | September 1, 2009 7:46 PM

What a wild assortment of comments. I do not see anything inappropriate about this dinner. I hope it becomes an opportunity for the President to emphasize the need for Muslim tolerance, civilized behavior and expressions of outrage at terrorism and atrocities in the name of radical Islam.

Wow...I hope he has a big halloween
party. I wanna go as a pirate.

this is why obozo doesn't go to church on Sunday's. Anyone with Hussein in his name is Muslim. Does anyone see any Jews on the invitation list?

Hey wingnuts, by your logic, George W. Bush must be Muslim, too, because he went to mosque.

Posted by: frantaylor | September 1, 2009 7:33 PM

Good for him. It takes some cojones to stand up for an unpopular minority -- especially when you've been "accused" of secretly being a member of that minority.

America is a land of religious tolerance. I'm proud to have a president who can host a seder, have guests for Ramadan, and will celebrate Christmas and Easter with his family. What a nice example for the rest of us, both within and without our borders.

Posted by: davestickler | September 1, 2009 7:30 PM

The nuts will be falling out of the trees for this story. They ignored the Passover dinner story, but they'll be all over Barack "Hussein" Obama for this. Jeepers. All I can say is, they better have a Christmas tree...

Posted by: jacquescustodian2 | September 1, 2009 7:26 PM

Will Obama recite the Koran during his Ramadan dinner? Hopefully he got something from all that time he spent in an Indonesian madrassa. What a joke this punk community organizer is. We've never had a President who was so under qualified for the job. He better enjoy it now while he can. Life won't be so pleasant when the Republican-majority Congress is seated is Jan 2011.

Posted by: kathymac1 | September 1, 2009 7:22 PM

I thought you fasted during Ramadan?

Anyway, I salute the president. I think it's wonderful that we're finally recognizing muslims as brothers in this great American experiment.

The president would be wise to show these guys some down-home American cooking. I suggest some Iowa pork chops, lots of mashed potatoes & sawmill gravy, and of course, some beer to wash it down.

I would go to a Ramadan dinner with a feast like that!

Hats off to the commander in chief!

Posted by: Ombudsman1 | September 1, 2009 7:16 PM

And Obama CLAIMS not to be a muslim?????? Won't participate in National Day of Prayer, but participates in muslim garbage. What a hypocrit.

Here comes the avalanche of vile anti-Islamic bigotry who haven't the faintest club about the Qur'an and its widely-varied interpretations other than the ravings they've read on other right-wing sites. "The 9/11 murderers were all Muslims! Muslims are evil," they cry. Of course they were. Timothy McVeigh, American terrorist par-excellence was also a Christian, like me. Therefore, all Christians must be terrorists.

Posted by: ozma1 | September 1, 2009 7:03 PM

Not surprised at all......This administration has a "America is to blame" attitude, so is anyone really surprised that he celebrates the religion under which the terrorists who killed 3,000 on 9/11, and kill all over the world every day, follow?
