Obama Names Manufacturing Adviser

By Scott Wilson
President Obama has named Ron Bloom, an influential figure in the national labor movement before joining the administration's auto task force earlier this year, as his senior counselor for manufacturing policy.

In that role, Bloom will help Obama try to rebuild a U.S. manufacturing sector that has lost millions of jobs in recent years, the White House announced Sunday. Obama is expected to discuss Bloom's new position Monday when he speaks to the AFL-CIO in Cincinnati.

"Last week we learned that our manufacturing sector expanded for the first time in 18 months and had the highest monthly output in two years," Obama said in the statement announcing Bloom's new role. "It's a sign that we're on the right track to economic recovery, but that we still have a long way to go."

Bloom is currently a senior adviser to Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner, assigned to the auto task force that earlier this year recommended billions of dollars in government aid to help see General Motors and Chrysler through bankruptcy.

He will keep that position and add the new role. In the White House statement, Obama said Bloom's "extensive experience with both business and labor" would help in "creating the good-paying manufacturing jobs of the future."

Bloom has worked at the intersection of organized labor and business for years.

Before joining the administration in February, he served as a special assistant to the president of the United Steelworkers Union. He specialized there in collective bargaining with companies in financial distress.

He also helped found Keilin and Bloom, an investment banking firm, whose clients included some of the nation's largest unions. He was also an executive at the investment bank Lazard Freres & Co., where he focused on arranging financing for union-led bids to purchase companies.

Manufacturing czar? I see a lot of labor experience, but I don't see any manufacturing experience. My prediction is that this guy will be no help at all to America's business economy

CORPORATE AMERICA DOES NOT SUPPORT AMERICAN INDUSTRIES. BY GOING OVERSEAS, THEY DON'T HAVE TO PAY HEALTH CARE, PENSIONS, SAFE WORKING CONDITIONS, ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION OR LIVING WAGES.
NOW WATCH THE GOP START A CAMPAIGN TO FIGHT OBAMA ON THIS ISSUE.
THE BEST FOR AMERICA IS A VOICE FOR THE WORKING FAMILIES. OBAMA HAS GIVEN US OUR OWN LOBBYIST.
UNDER RONALD REAGAN, THE UNIONS WERE FOUGHT EVEN AT THE RISK OF OUR SAFETY WHEN HE FIRED ALL OR THE AIRLINE CONTROLLERS. THEN HE DE-REGULATED THE FINANCIAL SYSTEM.
THE GOOD THING ABOUT MR. OBAMA'S ADMINISTRATION IS THAT HE HAS PUT SO MUCH STUFF ON THE TABLE THAT THOSE SLOW THINKING CORPORATE FINANCED CONGRESSPEOPLE FINALLY HAVE TO WORK FOR A LIVING.
LOBBYIST HAVE TO FORK OUT A LOT OF MONEY TO FIGHT SO MANY ISSUES THAT THEIR BUDGETS ARE BEING STRETCHED.
IF WE CAN BE SMART ENOUGH TO SUPPORT THE PRESIDENT, HE WILL BE ABLE TO CHANGE HOW WASHINGTON DOES BUSINESS.
A GOOD EXAMPLE IS THE ISSUE OF A PUBLIC INSURANCE OPTION, WE KNOW THIS WILL LET MANY PURCHASE INSURANCE WHO DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE AND ALSO LET THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOW PAYING A LARGE PART OF THEIR INCOME TO BE ABLE TO PURCHASE A PUBLIC POLICY THAT WILL PROVIDE THE SAME COVERAGE FOR LESS MONEY.
THE INSURANCE COMPANY IS PAYING MANY SENATORS LARGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY TO BLOCK IT.
THE BIG ARGUMENT IS THE COST. BECAUSE THE OMB HAS NOT FACTORED THE PREVENTIVE AND EDUCATIONAL FACTORS THAT REDUCE HEALTH CARE COST, THE COST OF THE PLAN IS GREATLY INFLATED.
A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THE DECREASE COST BY LIFE CHANGES IS THE REDUCTION OF COST RELATED TO SMOKING REGULATIONS AND EDUCATION. NOT ONLY DID IT REDUCE MAJOR ILLNESSES TO THESMOKER BUT ALSO TO PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY CHILDREN WHO INOCENTLY SUFFERED FROM ILLNESSES RESULTING FROM A SKOKE ENVIRONMENT.
BUSINESSES ALSO SAVED BY NOT HAVING TO DO EXTENSIVE CLEANING AND PAINTING DUE TO SMOKE DAMAGE. ALSO THERE WAS A DECREASE INCIDENT IN FIRES CAUSED BY CARELESS SMOKING.

A Union sympathizer as Manufacturing Czar? Is this not what we expect from Obama?

Somebody should look into how well Mr. Bloom's financial deals involving unionized companies have fared. I know of a company that backed away from purchasing one of the companies he was involved with because of the "progressive" union he put in place. They made a once strong company unmarketable and it is now struggling to survive.

Obama is colleting votes for 2012 and not
tending to Business at Hand. He must give in to the Big Money people and Socialist
groups.. to win in 2012. The use of Czar is a way to get
around the US Constitution.....

Most of you people are not independently wealthy or productively self sufficient.

You depend on your wages for a living.

Your wages have been stagnant or declining for ten years.

But you are against an initiative to create more jobs and better wages?

Good luck.

That is exactly what the manufacturing “Czar” needs to be for efficiency. I am with the rest of the citizens asking “what happened to the Presidents Cabinet of advisors?” A little too much scrutiny I suppose. The Obamanation is a very dangerous joke.

A financial accountant advisor? I do not believe it. Does anyone need to know about manufacturing or just money and who needs to get it. I would say we can expect more corruption on the horizon.

Financial Gurus always have excellent ideas about manufacturing, engineering and production. That must be why our major corporations (GMA) is doing so well because all of the witless accountant/ banker/ stock brokers are now running the corporations into the ground. Hell they care nothing about jobs and manufacturing. All they want to do is make companies look good to sell to Europe for a handsom profit.

Senior advisor to Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner. That sure makes me feel safer knowing the whole corrupt Fed banking family is now overseeing the country’s Manufacturing Corporations. It could be made worse only if we were Communist and no one wanted to work for a living?

While it is probably true that Bush and the Republican leadership allowed corruption within the financial system that Clinton started. Obama tried to collapse the economy by implementing a Chavez style Socialist takeover for his elitist handlers. There could be nothing worse taking place in a Democratic Republic.

I still believe the members of Congress that voted along his Communistic lines should be tried as traitors and treated as criminals. All of the benefits of the Senate and House of Representatives should be reviewed and challenged by a true citizen’s panel and they should have to survive on the same Social Security benefits they allocate for their constituents. This would help to insure the working people are treated just as fairly because as I see it, they are no different or smarter than the average men and women, and deserve no better treatment or benefits than the corporations are presently being allowed to remove from the workers. The bloated and corrupt Labor Unions are on their own for being allowed their socialist indiscretions.

Obama seems to have no use for a cabinet, other than the occasional photo op.

Why not get rid of 'em?

Posted by: Tupac_Goldstein | September 7, 2009 6:29 PM

A Union Organizing lawyer??? For creating manufacturing jobs???

Isn't that exactly what went wrong in California? Between the union lawyers and Acorn, it's not difficult to see the damage they caused to that state's economy.

Good Grief! We're now gonna run that scam nationally?

Posted by: playfair109 | September 7, 2009 6:02 PM

"Advisor". LOL. This Rag is a joke.

Posted by: ChangeWhat | September 7, 2009 3:38 PM

Two Czars I want Obama to get rid off: Vivek Kundra (CTO) - he is a shirt thief and guilty in the corruption case while he was a CTO in DC. He should also get of Aneesh Chopra (CIO), he is also as corrupt as Vivek. Both of them are unqualified for the job. It's just pay back for the election campaign. Wake Up America.

Flood Congress with letters, emails AND, calls to DEMAND that they do their job and investigate the illegal use of CZARS by the Obama Administration.

We the PEOPLE must not allow an end run around our Constitution to avoid Senate Confirmation of Presidential Advisors

CONGRESS WILL NOT ACT WITHOUT THE PEOPLE SPEAKING OUT LOUD

America WAKE UP.  Obama's objective is to overpower us WITH CRISES, CZARS, CAP AND TRADE, GREENING EVERYTHING, DEFICITS, TAKEOVER OF INSURANCE, BANKS, GM, CHRYSLER, GOVERNMENT HEALTH SYSTEM ETC.,  while  raising our National Debt to the point of a complete BREAKDOWN in our CAPITALIST SYSTEM. Then, he can "REMAKE AMERICA. He said he would do this but few of us knew how or what he meant.
He wants us all DEPENDENT ON GOVERMENT for our BASIC needs.
Obama's plan for social justice includes short circuiting our Constitution, taking property and making us all equally poor.  We will be kept under Government Control by his CIVILIAN ARMY, which OBAMA said must be funded to be as large and as strong as OUR MILITARY.
How could PATRIOTIC Democrats, Republicans, Independents, or ANY AMERICAN ever agree to the formation of an AMERICAN CIVILIAN ARMY? Obama would be Commander-in-Chief of his private ARMY. He would become our smiling and charming DICTATOR.

What in the name of all that is holy does a union man know about business - except how to trash one? Unions bankrupted the automobile industry, the steel industry, et.al. with their constant deamands for more and more money and benefits and he is going to be in charge of renewing our manufacturing base?

Posted by: sandynh | September 7, 2009 12:18 PM

This "czar" business and an adviser for every little thing NEEDS TO STOP! The Democrats have always bloated bueracracy and are doing it again. Congress has the Poer of the Purse and is doing nothing to reign in the spending spree at the White House.

Posted by: HDVet | September 7, 2009 11:57 AM

Steel, airline and auto industries wrecked. Now the stakes go up and they trash what's left of the economy and get paid very well for doing it. The investment banking model wrecked the banks. Prepare for doomsday.

Posted by: Dermitt | September 7, 2009 10:58 AM

union people don't know anything about business except how to ask for more money and benefits and make a business less competitive.

When has a union ever started a business? This shows just how stupid obozo and the democrat socialist party is. they are absolutely clueless when it comes to job creation other than government handout jobs which cause less jobs in the private sector.

Posted by: charlietuna666 | September 7, 2009 10:57 AM

This is important. The people who liquidated manufacturing are going to figure out how the government can manufacture things. Maybe we'll get a government newspaper next and be like China. We can call it the Washington Toast. I need a drink! A double in fact. I'm still on Operation Homefront and it's a tough op.

Posted by: Dermitt | September 7, 2009 10:53 AM

So anyone the president hires is now a czar?!? The President is not allowed to hire people; is that what you people are saying?

GET A GRIP, PEOPLE !!!

Posted by: lostinthemiddle | September 7, 2009 10:39 AM

Surely no one, even Obama's closest advisors, think a union guy is going to develop "manufacturing policy" that will revitalize our industrial sector.

Does the administraton continue to think we are all complete idiots?

Posted by: Curmudgeon10 | September 7, 2009 9:41 AM

yet again, another radical socialist union boss appointed as "czar". Old Communist Russia had Czars too - where in our constitution does it say our Pres has the power to appoint "czars"? Wake up America! Wake up!

Posted by: NoVaPatriot | September 7, 2009 9:29 AM

Gee Glen Beck and Limbaugh...another white man in the Obama Administration. Bet you don't want to mention that one do you.

Posted by: DwightCollins | September 7, 2009 7:42 AM

now I get it ---It takes me longer----

These czars are hired to break down the issues into bit sized kindergarden language so the president and his so called staff can understand.

So now the USA has an Executive branch run by hired hands ( whom we did not elect btw and do not control)

we have the Great Imposter in the white house. who knew.

Posted by: JohnAdams1 | September 7, 2009 4:34 AM

During the Bush administration I commented on the people that Bush surrpinded himself, especially in the Whitehouse. My post was something like this:"Incompetend people wanted for Whitehouse high level staff positions."
After watching Obama's various appointments, especially tghe high level Whitehouse staffers, my comment is ewish-Americans wanted for high level Whitehouse staffer positions."

Posted by: maitami | September 7, 2009 1:47 AM

Sorry guys and gals...Drudge links WWW.DAILEYMAIL,CO.UK. that British GOV.says that OBAMA and HLLARY both knew of pending release of LOCKERBEE BOMBER and didn't object til after the release...DISGUST...HOW COULD YOU?!!! HOPE AND CHANGE MY B*TT!!!!!

Posted by: rdonrichardson | September 7, 2009 12:00 AM

Another Czar for the president.

He has so many czars you'd think his cabinet is clueless. That couldn't be the case, could it?

Posted by: Ombudsman1 | September 6, 2009 11:28 PM

The Obama Administration is beginning to resemble some kind of comedy routine - Keystone Cops or Stan and Ollie or something. There are no statesmen or mature politicians still alive capable of even grasping the joke that is official Washington today, but rest assured there are plenty rolling over in their graves.

Posted by: chatard | September 6, 2009 11:03 PM

When will the New Car Dealers be paid the Clunker money ? The banks squeal like pigs & get their money right away.

Posted by: wasaUFO | September 6, 2009 10:59 PM

This is not a logical appointment. If the objective is to help figure out how to get the manufacturing industry growing again, you simply don't appoint a union man to run that initiative. This is industry suicide. Why does Obama have Czars? is he going to disolve his cabinet? I have voter's remorse.

I think Obama will become a better president after the house and senate turn over control to the opposition.

Posted by: joebart | September 6, 2009 10:39 PM

unions greed bankrupted GM and obama puts a union thug as car czar...yep...obama is a compete idiot.

Posted by: JWx2 | September 6, 2009 9:23 PM

Sounds like Ron Bloom should be called
"Union Czar" not manufacturing czar.

Posted by: ohioan | September 6, 2009 9:05 PM

Have the writers or editors googled this guy yet?

WaPo, here is your chance to get ahead of a story for a change.

Posted by: harmony2 | September 6, 2009 8:55 PM

The shadow government name of Czars squeakes like a bad wheel, or nails on a chalkboard with most Americans, who wonder why hasn't Congress demanded some over sight on it.

Posted by: dottydo | September 6, 2009 8:48 PM

Wonder how many days it'll take to find out this jerk is a commie/tax-cheat/Weatherman bomber/Black muslim racist...

Posted by: TXSFRED | September 6, 2009 8:46 PM

Obama just doesn't get it. On the day Van Jones departs he announces another czaar or advisor. Is this guy's ego out of control or what?
