President Says Uninsured Americans Are More Common Than You'd Think

President Obama, continuing to mount a fresh surge on health care, argued Saturday in his weekly address that nearly half of all Americans under age 65 will lose their health insurance within the next decade.

"We're talking about middle-class Americans," Obama said. "In other words, it can happen to anyone."

Treasury officials released the findings of a 10-year study that bolsters the president's case. Based on a sample of more than 17,000 respondents from 1997 to 2006, the study - "The Risk of Losing Health Insurance Over a Decade: New Findings from Longitudinal Data" - found that 48 percent of Americans are uninsured at some point in a 10-year span and that the number jumped, to 57 percent, when taking people under age 21 into account.

In a conference call Friday with reporters, Treasury officials, who would speak only on condition of anonymity, repeatedly emphasized the universal nature of the danger - saying it is a "misperception" that the uninsured represent only a small slice of the population. In fact, they said, the report found that many more people, inclnuding in the middle class, went for stretches without insurance over the years.

"If you're under the age of 21 today, chances are more than half that you'll find yourself uninsured at some point" over the next decade, Obama said in the address, prepared for radio and Internet broadcast. "And more than one-third of Americans will go without coverage for longer than one year."

He continued: "I refuse to allow that future to happen. In the United States of America, no one should have to worry that they'll go without health insurance - not for one year, not for one month, not for one day. And once I sign my health reform plan into law - they won't."

“President Obama’s speech last week really moved me. Despite what my colleagues think of me. If what he says is what will EXACTLY happen, how can I not hope and work towards that cause”? Mike Oliphant runs a small Utah health insurance website www.benefitsmanager.net/SelectHealth.html and www.dentalinsuranceutah.net whom deals with hundreds of people on a day to day struggle to be approved for health insurance. “I get hopeful that I can finally tell people they can qualify for coverage REGARDLESS of their pre-existing medical condition”. Mike’s concern is that Obama’s people won’t deliver what he urges on areas within his speech. “I really have been moved by this guy and wish we could just talk so he could understand the frustration of a health insurance agent. I have been involved on a political level within the state of Utah and their struggle for health care reform. I have seen and regrettably been part of politics at work. I have learned lessons through baptism of fire with politics. For instance, I struggled against House Speaker Clark and H.B. 188 because that was what I was urged to do from our industry (that was all I knew). But after awhile and countless meetings with state and private carriers in Utah, I began asking myself if I was doing the right thing. I realized over time that House Speaker Clark really means what he says and is hard nose about getting reform done in Utah. I got that there wasn’t any behind the scene conspiracy scheme or personal objective of Mr. Clark. His bill makes allot of positive changes in the “health insurance reform” world of Utah. He claims that reform just doesn’t stop there, it must continue through “health care reform”. You see, there is a major difference between the two reforms. Clark “gets it” but I really worry that Obama’s administration doesn’t because if you have noticed the subtle language change of dropping “health care reform” and going to “health insurance reform”. See more about what Utah has accomplished here which utilizes private carrier involvement with true reform. If you can believe it, they reached it with an objective of $500,000. Now I find myself on the “other side” of the fence furthering Utah’s cause. Let’s hope we don’t all have a mental breakdown nationally and just take a honest look at the proposals.

A PUBLIC OPTION IS ABSOLUTLELY NECESSARY!
I am 61 years old and I do not have health insurance! I just cannot afford one at the moment! And I suspect that many people are in my position. In fact, 14000 people lose their health insurance every day! I fear that many more people will be in that position sooner than they think! There is no such thing as a secure job, and therefore, there is no security to be found in employer sponsored expensive private health insurance.
The majority of Americans are employed by small and medium sized businesses. The cost of private insurance will definitely rise! These businesses have to compete in a global economy. Our main competitors are in China, India and the Far East. They have no health insurance, and are a cheap source of labor and are producing cheap goods! The world does not owe us a living. We have to produce cheaper goods to sell in a competitive global market by all legal means necessary!
Expensive private health insurance is eating into the profits of all our companies - small, medium and large! But most importantly, expensive private health insurance has taken money away from the wages of our workers! They need more spending money, because 70% of our economy is based on consumer spending! The more we spend the more jobs we retain and create! The less we spend the more unemployment there will be!
Expensive private health insurance is bad for profits, bad for wages and bad for jobs! It is slowly but surely killing our economy!
This situation cannot be allowed to continue any longer! We must reduce health cost, and one of the best ways of doing so, is to have a public option, that provides much needed competition for the private insurance companies! Competition is the life blood of our capitalist system! Competition reduces cost for consumers, and keeps more spending money in their pocket! Why are private insurance companies and their political backers so scared of healthy competition?
One of the most important lessons that we should have learnt from our economic meltdown, is that good governance is absolutely essential, to protect and promote the interests of the American people, from greedy and irresponsible individuals and companies, who are hell bent on making profits, irrespective of its harmful and detrimental effects on the economy generally, and people's jobs and livelihood in particular!
Barack Obama was elected President to put an end to the unpatriotic and irresponsible practices; and to put the interest of the American people first, and to create a system where profits can be fairly made, but not at the expense of the destruction of the economy, people's jobs and our core values! Commonsense must prevail and a health care reform bill must be passed with a much needed and necessary public option.

It is really ashame that so many who have blogged on this site are so uninformed about health care in general and health care reform in particular. I read a lot of "me." There is something about the "common welfare" in our founding documents.

It is a sad day when a person not only disrepects our President in front of the Congress and country, but also when the same person refuses to go back to the very site and offer an apology to those who were present that night. The same people who refuse to apologize more than once have never heard Clinton's repeated apologies for his indiscretions and consequently have never accepted them. May the hypocrites receive the full measure of God's judgment. May those who go about terrifying people with false information also receive God's full measure of punishment. May those who blasted out "treason" in accusation of those who would even dare to challenge GWB over his intention to fight a war in Iraq receive the ultimate punishment that they deserve for the weight of the vitriol that they have unleashed against Pres. Obama. As I recall, we are still fighting a few wars.

If the USA is going into the trash heap of history, it will not be because of people like President Obama. As a white person, I am disappointed at my "race" for being so solidly behind the mean-spirited marches and speeches that we have been seeing and hearing ever since the beginning of the McCain campaign for president, especially after Sarah was foisted on the national stage.

No Medicare for All. No "public option." Nothing but $3800 fines the uninsured have to pay the government every year if they don't own health insurance. Who fattens the already fat wallets of the insurance corporations? Poor folks. As usual.

I can avoid mandatory car insurance by not owning a car. How can I avoid mandatory health insurance?

Unfair, unjust, fascist, and oligarchical: putting the poorest people's money into the fat pockets of the already super-rich! Senator Baucus is worse than preemptive war!

Give us universal health care, Medicare for Everyone, or give us death. Forget the "public option" and any other watered-down Sicko scheme.

Remember the basics of supply and demand.
We are demanding more highly qualified doctors and nurses (not a practicing techie).....(in ER situations for example)
and they aren't there.

We have no more graduating doctors. Or do we still have folks going through the long process of medical school and the internships? The whole nine yards?
Then, of course, the debt they have incurred.
The younger generationers are say "no" to medical school.
So what's that say about supply and demand?

Thanks to rcunninham for pointing out The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act of 1986 which will continue to require provision of medical care for illegal aliens regardless of any exclusionary language in the bill.

The second issue re inclusion of illegal aliens lies in our application of the 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868 to ensure citizenship for the newly emancipated African Americans, "all persons, born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”

This section of this amendment has long since performed its intended function and shoud be repealed BEFORE passage of any health care bill to preclude achor babies from indebting taxpayers for the health care of all of their third world relatives. Deportation of all illegals should also be concluded before passage of any bill.

Middle class America is an entire generation of "paycheck to paycheck poor". And if they still have their job, the company might have stopped paying insurance because they are goin' down the tubes.

What about the "out of pocket payers" that pay for their own $350 ER visit, (if it was necessary)? Or write a check for a 1500 procedure? Are they in this bill?

i haven't had health insurance for 10 years at any given time.
i may get lucky and get on some federal funding and get a limited state position for a couple years --then i can cash in on the health plans. Get some things done that are necessary---only because i got insurance because of a job.

that's today's america. a job means a health plan. you are lucky to get a job that is "long-lasting" and one passes the 90 days probation, etc. etc. and bingo, you can get some health "things" done. braces for the kids (dental).

But who has that any longer? A long-lasting job. Or had it and lost their main income resulting in debt they never saw coming.

America is thinking about how to put food on the table. The healthcare debate is way above them at this time. I don't know if that is a good thing or not.

Top-Ten Reasons to Oppose Obummer-Care

10. Illegal iummigrants are eligible.
9. Anchor or Jackpot babies are eligible.
8. Premiums are based on earnings, AKA "Affordability Credits" andf those who need AIDS pharmaceuticals will suck the system drier than the Mojave Desert, in no time.
7. Cuts in Medicare reimbursement to physicians who are already receivng 10 cents on the dollar for the usual and customary fees. Surprise, guess who's sticking-up for Medicare and it isn't the Democrats.
6. A new bureaucracy, with an unelected official / political appointee running the show.
5. An upswing in "Concierge Care" by doctors and hospitals who will not honor Obummer-Care policies. "We reserve the right to refuse service." It isn't racial, religious or creed, just business.
4. US Taxpayer Dollars are being used to float an unconstitutional piece of legislation that isn't theirs to give.
3. The US Government is not a charitable institution and should not be involved in something that will stifle avancement in medicine and science. Remember Natasha Richardson and the Medivac that doesn't exist in Canada.
2. The States are responsible for managing the insurance companies with their commissions, not the Federal government. This is a right used by the states and not reserved for the Federal Government. If it is such a good idea, let the individual states handle their own mess, not burden the taxpayers of the other states with the economic policies and faults of these states.

1. $1.6 Trillion to fund this turkey, and the CBO says there is no cost savings. How much more of a deficit do we need before we're all broke or the People's Republic of China forecloses on the Lincoln Memorial?

How many more infomercials is King Obimbo going to give? How many more talk shows and press conferences is he going to give. What part of "No" to freeloaders and enabled losers, doesn't he understand? When King Obambi flew over the protestors in Marine 1, didn't he get the message?

This debate isn’t about reducing costs or promoting better health care.

If it were, comprehensive tort reform, a nationally competitive insurance market, increasing the numbers of doctors and nurses, eliminating the ability/requirement for hospitals to transfer costs, structuring incentives to reduce costs at all levels, eliminating illegal aliens from costs by sending them home, denying insurance companies the ability to drop coverage, providing full deductions for medical costs on personal income taxes, encouraging catastrophic coverage, and removing employers as primary insurance providers would all replace socialized medicine as the topic of debate.

Obama’s health care “reform” isn’t about cutting costs or providing care to those who need it, it is purely a permanent redistribution of power from the individual to the state.

I am utterly APPALLED at the fear tactics that Obama and the Democrats are employing in their frenzy to takeover the healthcare industry.

Isn't this the self-same group that screamed bloody murder about Bush-Cheney "fearmongering?"

According to Obama, if the healthcare industry is not taken over by government, no one will have health insurance, costs will rise to such a high level that all hospital and doctor supplied care will be priced out of reach (presumably meaning only the evil "rich" can afford it), and that global warming will be accelerated.

This country has absolutely gone to H E L L in a handcart.

I fear that enough people will be fooled by this dissembling misleader for long enough to kill the nation.

As a nurse practitioner, most of the young patients I see choose not to purchase health insurance because they then cannot pay for their cell I-phones, high-speed internet, cable TV, weekend parties, you get the picture sir?? You are the one who needs to stop the scare tactics and tell the truth and I agree with the above blogger of the blatant payback to the Unions in regards to not being taxed on their insurance benefits. Also, who will care for these 48 million newly insured? I see 20-25 patients per day and they already complain of not having enough of my time and having to wait too long to be seen. Maybe we can import them from China-but oops-we will have to add a tariff to their services like Obama just added to tires imported from China on Friday-to also payback the Union Thugs!!

We are far and away the richest country in history, and yet for decades republicans have blocked universal healthcare, a right that virtually all other civilized countries have afforded their citizens (This is selfishness).

We currently pay twice as much as per person per year as these other countries, and yet our health outcomes are much worse than theirs. Where is the wasted money going? The republicans and their rich corporate friends (insurance, pharma, etc.) are looting it (This is greed).

And this nonsense about illegal immigrants, especially in relation to Obama, only brings the republicans' underlying racism into focus.

As a nurse practitioner-President Obama are you listening??? 75% of patient's I see either choose not to purchase, when they can afford it, or too lazy to inquire and fill out paperwork for pulic assistance, Medicare or Medicaid. It is so much easier to pay that cable, high-speed internet, or cell phone bill (and I might add the new I-phone) , go out on weekend and party than pay for healthcare insurnace.

The courts have rules time and time again that any legislation that is open to ALL citizens is open to ALL - - whether they be citizens, legal residents, or illegal alien invaders.

And, of course, obummer (as a former law professor) knows this - - unless he is as stupid as he is anti-American.

Obamacare supporters: Stop and ask yourself if you believe in capitlism. Will the public option be sustainable? No, it will go the route of Social Security and Medicare, all going bankrupt.

Will the public option even lower cost? Here's how it works, the government will negotiate with doctors on fees, what if doctors don't agree on lowering prices. You get rationing as a result. You get HIGHER TAXES to pay for the public option. You get doctors that don't accept the public option health plan, look at Medicaid. Ok, what if doctors agree on the lower prices, how many doctors will be in business as a result?

Ask yourself would the US be the no. 1 power nation in terms of wealth and military supremacy if the national debt continues to grow out of control. That is SELFISH and IRRESPONSIBLE to our future generations.

All national healthcare programs will run out of money manifested in one way or another (higher taxes, rationing, etc), you don't have to dig deep to know that (See all countries with national healthcare http://www.blogcdn.com/www.gadling.com/media/2007/07/healthcareworldbig.jpg).

You want low healthcare, it's simple, create competition and sensible oversight. There are plenty of ideas put forth that do not cost taxpayers a penny and bolster competition.

- Start with increasing physicians and medical schools. Why are there plenty of qualified applicants that get turned away.
- Allow buying insurance accross state lines (why is this not the case to begin with?)
- Create a market place for drug companies to compete, allow buying from international drug companies to increase supply

Then have sensible oversight to prevent abuse from companies (ie. insurance dropping patients)

Obama’s numbers make for good propaganda but are meaningless without knowing where the come from. The devil is in the details:

The reform bill attempts to address the plight of 5% and not 48% of our population.

While Obama claims the Treasury study shows 47.7% of US population lost health coverage, the average for a 10 year period is 14.7% only. However, this number needs to be “weighted” by the number of months the individual was uninsured. Doing so will results the true average of 10.43% or 34.42 million Americans.

Now, we also take Obama by his word that the approximately 12 million illegal aliens will not receive benefits. That means that the problem of uninsured is down to 22.42 million (6.79%). But the 22.4 million are composed of the ones who don’t want and those who can’t get insurance.

Since the new law will mandate that everyone has purchase insurance those estimated 5.9 million who do not want it will have to purchase it. This drops the total of 22.4 down to 16.52 million that can’t truly afford or get insurance. The health care reform claims to help that particular group. This group of 16.52 million is about 5.00% of the total of our US population of 330 million.

To pay the annual premium for those needy 16.5 million at an annual premium of $3,500 would cost 58 billion. Why then are we implementing a health car reform that costs 1400 billion?

Does anyone have an answer to this question?

I'll tell you a secret, I'm 72 and never lost my insurance. Another lie from "yeller-ama". Can't find one reason to believe one word that comes out of his mouth. Fear mongering by twisting and distorting statistical data:

A Treasury study, based on data collected by the University of Michigan, which found that 47.7 percent had lost coverage at some point, for one month or longer, during the 10 years from 1997 to 2006. Mr. Obama, using those figures to project what might happen over the next 10 years, says they amount to a dire forecast for the already insured.

Well, why not use a time interval of 20 years so that Obama could make us believe that 96 % of all Americans will have lost coverage at some point, for one month or longer? That would scare us even more.

It’s not only a bad trick but it is fundamentally dishonest to use the “power of compounding interest” to leverage the 2,6 % (= 8,6 million Americans) into 96 %.

Does his claim qualify as a lie? Technically not, in his mind it’s only meant to be a deception. However, deception is the brother to all lies which in turn validates Obama is a liar.

What will be the meaning of the text in the final bill?

btbarnes if you are out there consider this;
people who have health care, who pay premiums are being cheated out of their money and sometimes their lives. Insurance companies, because they are large and unregulated are not living up to their agreements with their paying customers.
You never know how good your insurance is with your employer until you need to use it, and then it's too late. Putting regulations on an industry with the power of life and death over us is not socialism, it is protecting the consumer from fraud and inhumanity.

I was just wandering why are we paying for lazy people. Every job I've went to has gave me a chance to have medical. I now we need help ,but dont we have the responsibilty to take care of ourselves. So i can act like a fool and hurt myself and you will pay medical bills. Oh that guy or girl that doesnt want to work for 6 dollars an hour should be covered. I grow up in a poor single family home. I should get off my ass and do something. But it is easier complain that he our she didnt want to give me a job. So let pay more taxes so i can quit and you can take care of me. Thank you for letting me be lazy. yeah all those people who want coverd how much of your money get spent on going out with friends and living like a king. How many meals do you really need to live. St0opid-do0dy heads don't even acknowledge the fact insurance companies won't cover, privately, those with preexisting conditions.

The individual costs still are astronomical to the average worker. Even the doctors and other professionals are drowning in this mess -- meaning the whole economy is affected, straight down the line.

I've never, ever seen a group of people more stupid than this one, in Washington, pretending to run this health care debate -- they show up, seemingly traumatized psychologically and intellectually, and they spew this nonsense, by rote, in the vein of Limbaugh, or Hannity, or Alinsky, or corporate cow PR.

Many experts who appear to be nonpartisan claim the uninsured number is inflated. Consider Americans who can afford insurance but don't buy, for example. The main issue with Obama quoting this number, or any other, is that those who once trusted him simply don't now. Media are remiss if they more due diligence in looking into these kinds of claims for this particular president.

I find it unsetling to hear obama talk about uninsured people in American. At first he said 47 million uninsured yet the other night he droped the figure to 30 million. Did he forget the Undocument criminal illigal aliens flooding into our country on a daily basis? Of course like he had only visited 46 of the 57 states he has a major problme with numbers and really needs help with math. Personally I do not like the slick Chicago mobster type of politics I see in his office. He has more Czars than Russia ever did and just like Capon and Mayor Daily he has under bosses (Czars) running all of his operations. Americans need to get off their collective rears and start to wake up before we have a total goverment take over of all our freedoms and the Constitution on which ur nation was founded taken down and burned before our very eyes. The followers of obama apparently do not have the mental capicity to think for themselves, especially the ones who were brainwashed in colleges today and now he is trying to do the same in the lower grades. Brainwash the children and you rule the coutry in short order.

What about the millions of ex-pat American economic refugees who live outside the US borders? They are eligible to vote absentee, but are unable to access Medicare or VA services at the present time.

If Obamacare passes, are American ex-pats going to be forced to take insurance coverage they can't use in their host country? Will they be fined if they don't enroll? It seems immigrants get screwed where ever they go and where ever they come from.

Fixing health care is a key component of fixing the overall economy of the nation.Anyone who can't understand that, shouldn't be allowed in polite society, ergo, a member of the party of NO.
The stimulus is working, jobs are being saved and created all across America, our car industry has been saved, new energy industry beginning to take shape, a long way to go, but its on the right track. Illegal immigrants - and every other person in this country - have had a legal right to health care since 1986. The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act was signed into law at that time by a Republican - President Ronald Reagan. Simply stated, the law requires that anyone presenting to an emergency department must be screened and stabilized if they have an emergency medical condition. This law has generated hundreds of millions of dollars in uncompensated care that all Americans eventually wind up paying for through cost shifting. First of all, illegal immigrants when they go to the hospital its to the emergency room. (Don't forget, they are illegal) But because of laws most hospitals will treat them and send them a bill. If the bill is not payed then taxpayer pays for it.
There is nothing in the bill that will put illegals on the plan, plain and simple. However, if your illegal maid, if your illegal nanny, if your illegal farmhand, if your illegal painter, if your illegal trench digger, if your illegal house restoration builder and if your illegal odd job helper need emergency help, then I'm sure he or she would not be kicked out of the emergency room. After all, what kind of country do you think we are? Surely, if we can tolerate paying Joe's healthcare, we can tolerate paying his helpers emergency bill.

What about active duty military - are they "insured"??
The young people, married and not, that don't think they need medical insurtance right now, preferring to buy the appliances and children stuff. They have chosen to be uninsured for now. Wait until they hear about the MANDATORY insurance the Great One will impose on them!!
Illegal aliens are assued of emergency treatment and STABILIZATION now. How about, after stabilization, we give them a ticket to their native country of record.
Why does congress think they can spend our money being nice to the illegals?!?!?
And don't give me the liberal mantra that the illegals willl not be covered! The employers wil be required to insure ALL their empoyees, legal and illegal. And what are the chances that the existing emergency treatment for illegals will terminate at stabilization?? ZERO

More lies from Obama - click on the link to the Treasury Department report - in the second sentence it quotes the Census Bureau Report that there are 46.3-million uninsured AMERICANS. Any idiot who reads the report knows that this number includes 9.5-million "NON-CITIZENS". So why does Treasury include them as Americans - I can only imagine that they are lying in their statements to us about not covering non-citizens.

A few years ago, I was part of an exhaustive phone survey conducted by Maine's MUSKIE INSTITUE to locate uninsured children for CHIPS.

Muskie redid the survey,originally conducted by a branch of the University of Chicago since there was a similar suspicion that there were many more uninsured children that the U. of C. 'missed'.

So from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. we called and called families on public assistance, etc. to locate these legendary 'uninsured' children. I guess we averaged about 100-125 calls a night.

We'd be lucky if we even found a 'hint' of a child who wasn't covered...these went to the study director for recalls.

What we found were a lot of kids who were in between parents, in divorce/separation limbo-land, and in the custody of grandparents who often just paid for their health care.

The parents would point fingers since custody was in dispute and once we inquired further the child was usually under BOTH parents coverage.

Other children were non-citizens in the care of non-English speaking custodians; in one case we got a Chinese translator to do some of the interviews. Illegals will not submit to phone interviews, so we had to involve other agencies.

I was amazed at the length at which we were paid by DIRIGO HEALTH CARE--Maine's precursor to OBAMACARE, to locate what quickly became a hunt for that proverbial needle in the haystack; and to stretch the analogy further, health care professionals grasping at any 'straw',i.e. eligible child whether in dispute or of illegal parentage to fulfill the expectation that there are uninsured and therefore, uncared for children in Maine.

After nearly a 1,000 phone calls and a handful of possibles, I quit out of frustration with what was obviously a ghost chase.

OBAMA's advisers are chasing the same fantasy....and in their zeal will enroll every child found, whether legal or illegal, and will stretch the definition of what is adequate insurance so that they can fly their grandiose plan to cover the under insured.

Funny, we don't see any statistics on the numbers of UNDEREMPLOYED...could it be because they became so during Obama's reign? hmmmm

This new tactic of Obama serves as a classic example of his cherry picking data to support his political ambition. Obama is not quite lying but certainly is not being truthful with America.

Upon examination of the data source used by criminal tax cheat, Timothy Geithner, to produce his misleading report for political gain, a smart reader will find the "Panel Study of Income Dynamics" (PSID) from the University of Michigan is a survey study of primarily low income, poverty stricken illegal aliens and minority groups.

Here are selected quotes from this PSID survey:

"...a cross-sectional national sample and a national sample of low-income families."

"...families originally from Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Cuba."

"...highly segregated neighborhood is associated with a 50-percent increase in the rate of a premarital first birth...."

These are selected titles of reference sources found in the PSID study:

"Do Unmarried Births Among African-American Teens Lead to Adult Poverty?"

"How Much Does Childhood Poverty Affect the Life Chances of Children?"

"How Are Older, Single Mothers Faring?"

Easy enough to surmise Obama and Geithner are hand selecting data to bias this Treasury report towards supporting their political ambitions.

Readers are urged to be skeptical and to examine data sources of this "report" produced by Obama and Geithner.

Should you readers not chase after truth you will be fooled and be made fools.

9/11/09 OBAMA’S HEALTH PLAN and Republican greed ignore the one real way to fix our health woes. Copyright and patent laws, a government program to protect author and inventors should be loosened so as to encourage competition. Competition is the backbone of capitalism, and it equals cheaper prices and better quality goods. If we reduced the time of protection inventors have, they would face the prospect of losing their monopoly. So they might raise the price higher for ten years instead of a lower price for 20? Not really because they are already priced above what people will pay. Not every invention costs the same to produce. Ten years would encourage the inventors to stay active and work on innovations and newer products to replace those going into the public domain.
I haven’t heard one republican offer this idea to counter socialist health care? Is it because rich republicans and democrats have a vested interest in copyrights and patents? Are they all so greedy that they would ignore one real good way to fix our health system permanently? They make believe that this socialism will be limited to health care, but things have a way of growing, and there is no guarantee that one thing won’t lead to another!
We need less government in business and reducing the amount of patent protection would solve our problems. Why should the government protect IP anyway? It's like having a soldier guard every Americans house, we don't do it, we protect our own home. The IP business would survive and prosper without patent laws, and I'm not suggesting they be done away with, just reduce the amount of time we protect them.

By fixing health care, it will help businesses become more globally competitive. Other countries business have been greatly aided by their governments by not having to pay for health care.

Even if it didn't help our economy, its sad and is a testament to some people's character that other Americans are unable to help other Americans down on their luck.

IF PEOPLE HAVE JOBS, they will be able to afford health insurance. We are running our government on a deficit now. Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, Post Office are already bankrupt. The number one crisis in america is the economy. Number two, unemployment, and number three the deficit. Let us work our way through each problem accordingly. We can not afford healthcare until these other problems are solved. Rather than explain what healthcare was going to do for our citizens, he (the President) chose to attack everyone who disagreed with him. Goverment run programs always run over budget estimates, have waste and fraud. How about we solve the problems of social security and medicare before we tackle healthcare, also. Ignoring these problems will not make them go away. All our Representatives should first solve these problems, before creating a new one with healthcare.

In college I learned to question what question the survey asked, as it made a difference.

For instance, in my immediate family we have my spouse, me, my son, daughter, son-in-law and 4 grandkids. None of us has health insurance. Why--well we are covered by military Tricare for some of us and SCHIP for others. Neither is insurance, so I would have not answer a question that says "do you have insurance?" with a positive answer.

So it's more than young people who think insurance isn't worth paying for; it's others who don't have insurance because they are already covered by the govt.

This explodes the Post's editorial position that President Obama's Plan is too expensive to enact. It also shows the irresponsibility of Kristol when he stated on these editorial pages yesterday that there is no health care crisis and that we have the best health care in the world.

We need to do whatever is necessary to provide adequate health care to all. That includes reversing the all purpose tax cuts for the rich (tax cuts that were good when we had a surplus, good when we had massive deficits, good in peace and in war financed on borrowed money, and good in the worst recession since the Great Depression). We should also end our wars. Those are what we can't afford.

All of us pre-Medicare workers are exactly one job loss and major illness/accident away from financial ruin.

With that stark reality in mind, we have to enact reforms that give society an affordable safety net.

The health care problem is about all of us.

I love my current gold-plated insurance plan. But... I don't own it and it can be snatched in a moment's notice. So for the 70-80% who say they, like me, are satisfied with their health insurance, let's not get smug and overly optimistic that we are safe.

Why the big uproar over Illegal Immigrants and Health Care Reform? If a bill is passed it will have an Iron Clad clause stating that NO Federal $$$$ will be spent on the health care needs of Illegal Immigrants. What's not to like about that? Maybe alot if you are already breaking the law by being one of the Hundreds of Companies that employ Illegal Immigrants.
The President did say something to the effect that Private Employers would be required to offer Health Insurance to their Employees. Here's the catch and what wasn't really said - EVEN IF THOSE EMPLOYEES ARE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. Now that's the game changer. A Company will no longer be able to hire Illegal Immigrants and then dump their Health Care needs on the Public by telling them to go to the Emergency Room if they get sick or injured ????
All in all it will start to make more sense to just hire Americans in America and most of the Illegal Immigrants will just go back home.

Ah, but the flaw in Obama's ointment is: Will it be affordable? If everyone is forced to have health insurance, as is the case with car insurance, what if the currently uninsured can't afford it?
Well, too bad, they would be breaking the law just like owners of cars who become uninsured because they can't afford it.
Obama says that if someone can't afford health insurance, however, the government will step in and make up the difference.
There's a lot to be settled before a bill gets on his desk, though, but one thing is sure: If health insurance is made mandatory but is not made affordable, Obama will be finished.
