Obama Cautiously Takes Credit for Economic Turnaround

By Michael D. Shear
President Obama on Saturday continued his administration's careful efforts to take credit for the slowly improving economy, using his radio address to tout the economic turnaround since world leaders met in London in April.

At the time of the G-20 summit, the world's economic situation was dire, Obama said in the radio address. The meeting in London marked "a crisis that required unprecedented international cooperation to jumpstart the world's economies and help break the downward spiral that enveloped all our nations," he said.

Next week, Obama and the same world leaders will gather in Pittsburgh for what Obama called "a five-month checkup" on the financial actions taken by their countries.

"Because of the steps taken by our nation and all nations, we can now say that we have stopped our economic freefall," the president said in the address, which is broadcast on the radio and the internet.

But the president was quick to note that he is not satisfied with the extent of the recovery in the United States or globally, saying that "stopping the bleeding isn't nearly enough."

"Our work is far from over," he said. "We know we still have a lot to do, in conjunction with nations around the world, to strengthen the rules governing financial markets and ensure that we never again find ourselves in the precarious situation we found ourselves in just one year ago."

In their own radio address, Republicans focused on health-care reform, and reiterated their opposition to the Democratic plans making their way through Congress.

North Carolina Congresswoman Sue Myrick, who gave the GOP address, talked about having been diagnosed with breast cancer nine years ago. She said her diagnosis came quickly after tests from her doctors.

"Under the government-run health care system they have in Canada and the United Kingdom, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to get those tests so quickly," she said. "One international study found that three times as many citizens in those countries wait longer than a month to
see a specialist. When it comes to life-threatening diseases like cancer, delay could mean death."

She added: "Replacing your current health care with a government-run system is not the answer."

Obama has railed against claims like that, saying repeatedly that people who have health insurance will not be required to give it up and that no one would be forced to join a government-run health plan.

Obama is booked on five Sunday-morning talk shows, where he is expected to continue the push for health-care reform.

Sad, 51% of Americans say the economy is the most pressing problem today. If anyone saw the heart wrenching PBS special, hosted by Al Roker and the Sesame Street characters then you would understand the enormity of the situation. The program featured jobless Americans and how they and their children were dealing with the recession. Everyone interviewed was teary eyed or just outright cried, and there were experts giving cheery advice to people who had lost everything.(not hard to do when You have a job. I am in that position, and I have procrastinated in signing up for welfare, food stamps and rental assistance as the Governor of the state of New Jersey has advised because my unemployment benefits have been exhausted. I am a single Dad who has sent out numerous resumes, even to companies out of state although I have no idea how I would afford the cost of relocating. I have applications on file everywhere. The largest job market available to me (New York) is experiencing their highest unemployment rate ever. Trying to keep an upbeat frame of mind is very hard but I have to do it because I have a child and I cannot let my fears affect her, although she knows we are running a tight ship. I even applied to the White House, so if Mr. Obama needs someone to scrub the White House floors, clean toilets, mow the lawn or be the pooper scooper for his dogs then I am available. I try to avoid my other displaced co-workers and I find myself envying those who have jobs. After watching that PBS special I finally broke down. Maybe Health Care Reform will have its benefits because so many of us will need therapy to help us deal with the with the fear that this will happen again. I doubt if the economy will ever get back on its feet because spending means the economy is healthy. I know that I, and many people like me will never spend a dime unless it is necessary. So Mr. Obama, Mr. Roker, cheery advice experts, and Muppets, be thankful that you have a job.

Comrades: As usual, the political chop is cheap and easy. There is no concrete acknowledgement as to how the miraculous economic turnaroud is playing out on Main Street. Therefore, the President shall appoint a Decimation Czar. This person is authorized to visit all White House, Capitol Hill, and Supreme Court offices, post haste. The Czar shall summilarly discharge 10% of any and all staffers, Reps, Senators, Judges et al., on the spot, whether present or not. The 10% roughly matches the unemployment pain being felt on Main Street. Pack it up 44 Representatives, 10 Senators, 1 Justice, and their assorted Hangers On In Good Standing. Dedd Kennedy has graciously initiated the cleansing. Power mongers/brokers, pain . . . . FEEL IT.

Obama should focus like a laser beam on the economy, it's the #1 Issue. If he does not, someone like Romney will cream him in 2012. He has been too unfocused lately, hence his slippage in the polls.

The President did not create the economic situation, he's trying to fix it. We are all feeling the pinch.

Employment statistics have been high in many states for years. This downturn started not on Main street but on the Side Streets (Urban American) since 2006.

If you have the answers -- to correct this overnight..please, just STAND!!

Is the King Obambi on drugs? What improvement in the economy?

Unemployment and the "Misery Index" hasn't been this high since the Carter Administration.

Gold and silver way up.

Dollar- Way down

Oil- Way up

Folks, the unemployment rate in California is over 12%, not including those who have fallen off the unemployment rolls.

All of the issues started when the Dummycrats took control of Congress. They are more interested in " investigatin'" instead of " legislatin'."

Now King Obambi wants to end flex-spend and health savings accounts. He want to curtail capital investment by raising the capital gains tax and tax on dividends.

Folks, King Obambi is indeed the Joker.

How's that " Hopey Changey" thing working out for you?

I would love to - it would certainly save taxpayers a lot of money.
Teabaggers could be eliminated IMMEDIATELY from Social Security and Medicare that's provided by the U.S. government they HATE!
And for those paying in now - we'll return your money with (a small) interest.

Job market expected to recover in 2014
The rate at which jobs were cut slowed in August, but the gap to be filled will be with us for a while. With 14.9 million people looking for jobs according to Moody's, the unemployment rate won't hit 5% -- considered "normal" -- until 2014. To put this in perspective, we still have one presidential election and two mid-term contests between now and a full employment recovery.

Data published by the Department of Labor Friday puts the unemployment rate at 9.7%. In December 2007, it was only 4.7%. And, as BloggingStocks reported on Friday, it could pass 10% by the end of 2009. For teenagers, the unemployment rate has reached 26%. The number of job-seekers who have given up completely is above 750,000 -- the highest level since the Department of Labor started keeping score in 1994.

Obama says he has saved the economy. For who? Do the math. 2014? Plus, with Obama's health care, cap & trade plus MANY millions of legalized illegal aliens added to the mix, the above picture is just a rosy scenario. Obama is already trotting out Amnesty as a way to provide free government provided health care to millions of illegals. All we need to do is legalize them.

Make no mistake; Amnesty is the REAL GOAL of the socialists. The “open borders” mob has been telling everyone for almost a decade that there are about 10 million illegals here. That’s a lie! Some estimates are placed at 37-39 million. But let’s just say that there’s about 25 million illegals here. Now this is where things get interesting...

What is typically not talked about in the Amnesty debate is this: Most of the illegals here are men, with their wives and children remaining in their native countries. Of course, they will b included in the Amnesty (as well as others in many instances). Do any of you think these are small families? A wife and one child? Think again! By the time the final tally comes in, you can look at adding a bare minimum of 60 million mostly illiterates to the society. They will cause wages to drop through the floor. They will obliterate any puny remaining quality of education in K-12 and they will also bankrupt the welfare system. The middle class in this country will be eviscerated.

But the main goal of Obama and his socialist comrades would be achieved. 90% or more will vote for the one promising free goodies – socialists. America will become a one party socialist state.

And please, don’t you “progressive” idiots remind me that Bush & McCain support Amnesty. Doing so you will make the erroneous assumption that I am a fan of these two idiots. I am not.

Obama is a liar and a socialist cockroach.

Ask youself this, what has cost the American people more - Bush's tax cuts and wars or Obama's proposed health care plan. It is not even close? On the economy, give the man sometime. Under "W" the stock market hit all time highs as did employment. According to the BLS more people had jobs in 2007 than at any other time in history. Did the Dems at WashPo report this? hell no. Also, productivity, personal wage growth and disposable spending all hit record highs. Obeyme is now turning us into a dismal 3rd world Marxist land of malaise. But, after telling us we are in a depression, expects us to believe he has brought us out of it in 5 or 6 months? When the last real depression lasted from 1929 until 1940?... Business just got hit with a huge tax increase in the form of the min wage increase, the effects of which are still to be felt. Last time anybody reported on it... only about 15 to 20 percent of the stimulus money had even been spent... so if Obama says things are getting better it means about 560 billion dollars of the stimulus was not needed... and that is assuming things haven't cycled out on their own.

Can you imagine if unemployment was 9.7% during the election and John McCain tried to tell us things were getting better? He simply tried to say the "fundementals" were strong and was a laughed at by Obama and his buddies in the media.

It is unfortunate our President has other plans in mind or we'd have reached this economic up turn by April of this year, but creating the deep well of misery from the Chinses was what you wanted. First of all, as the often-cited but often little read or understood MARX would have been happy to point out, the kind of economic blow-out we are currently living through is a regular, cyclical feature of capitalism. Not to say our current economy is or at any time has been actually "capitalist."

Second, Obama is not a socialist. He is not a "Marxist." His actions demonstrate that he's someone who very much wants to save the current system...he believes in the market!

Actually, he has no objection to our ordinary high-theft economy save when it proceeds towards self-destruction, as so recently it has. And he might well be through its collapse would (perhaps well enough WILL) be horrible.

Those guided by extreme right wing propaganda and personal malice (some of that well enough understandable amongst those who are suffering in this economy) fail to notice it is there old enemies who are manipulating them with distortions and lies. One of the least credible being that Obama is a "socialist."

I love "foxblows" comment. The Republicans have not been included in the health care bill, in fact, not even invited to the White House since April, according to logs. The stimulus bill was written by Pelosi and Reid behind closed doors. Oh, and Obama, in a speech in August in Virginia, said he wanted the Republicans (people who caused the mess) to shut up and get out of the way. How is that considered reaching out? By the way, Obama also said with the stimulus unemployment wouldn't go above 8%. He also promised 7 million new jobs by August. Neither of which have panned out. I love the folks that continue to blame Bush even though Obama has tripled the deficit. The way we are printing money, hyperinflation is just around the courner. Unemployment in Michigan, 16%, California, 12%+. And as an aside, the man who died because his health insurance was rescinded...a total lie. It was re-instated, he received his stem cell surgery and lived almost another 4 years. I just threw that in for "foxblows", because I feel sure he believes that Mr. Raddatz died because of lack of insurance coverage. Just a little misrepresentation by the POTUS.

The only place the economy has turned around is in the corporation he has bailed out and the companies the government now owns. Those people have unlimited funds now thanks to the taxpayers. Their bonus checks are still being cut on schedule.

I don't think the financil crisis was President Bush's or President Obama's fault. But when our government is giving billions to the banks and financil institutions that are in trouble because they gave out loans to people that had no credit history and these worthless loans were bundled and classified as "AAA" investments by AIG and sold all around the world creating a Ponzi scheme and financial disaster that makes Madoff look like small patatoes something is wrong. Shouldn't some of these elected representative that promoted worthless loans be going to jail along with the greedy wall street promoters of these bundled worthless securities? It seems that our government has a very hard time recognizing right from wrong and only think in terms of legal and can we get away with it. Representatives similar to Barney Frank, Waters and other liberals that refused to limit or regulate Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac should be voted out of office and made to answer for their negligence.

Well, I remeber last year at this time that the recession should be about 1 year in length with a slow jobs recovery like most recessions. So if all is going to plan, did he really do anything or did the American people do something? Like investing in the stock market? If we are coming out of the recession the President can then ask congress to cancel the rest of the recovery act as over 80% has not been used. Oh wait, I forgot they want to spend that in 2010 to help democrats keep control of the house and the senate.

Yup, Obama has solved our economic crisis. I can just hear him, "Keep those presses running 27/7." He can't print his spending money fast enough. He would do more for this Country if he led by example and not the do as I say, not as I do. He could stay in the white house and do back drops of his "speeches" that way he is not expending our tax dollars to bus in his hand picked audience, nor would we be paying for all the support staffs' traveling. His wife, can have the cook do the shopping at the organic market. Millions and millions of dollars can be saved just by having the first couple stay home. This family needs to understand it is our money they are wasting and I don't think it is 'cute' or necessary to continually waste our money. Actually I'm tired of it and I believe many believe the same as I do. How can we get it through Obama's pea brain head to stop, just stop, stop, stop, stop, spending our money!!!

The recession is far from over and the true unemployment rate - excluding government reporting gimmicks - is near 21%. Instead of letting the economy stabilize naturally and allowing the market to liquidate failed companies, problems have been papered over and failed companies have been propped up, leaving a distorted structure of production to the detriment of all. The serial bubble-blowers and the Fed have fixed the interest rate at a value far below what free market participants would choose, which will encourage further malinvestment and overconsumption. Bush, Obama, Geithner, and Bernanke are all adept politicians but also economic ignoramuses.

Obama is going to get FULL CREDIT for the total economic disaster he is causing. He can call it whatever he wants, but his words are...pardon me...lipstick on a pig.

Well - fact is - many of us feel like screaming WHAT TURN AROUND??
Many of us are frightened. Being old - never before in my long life have I ever felt so insecure about the future of my country and if I were young or even middle aged I would be more horrified at the goings on.
Even if there were a glimmer of TURN AROUND - there is an overriding fear among many average people in this country -fear of what bills will be coming out of Congress that will adversely strain our economy more. Fear of our country becoming weaker and weaker due to the amount of debt we carry as a nation.
This President does not provide the "average, hard working American" with confidence in his ability to properly handle any aspect of our government.
This was not the time for an inexperienced, unqualified, far left leaning person in the White House.
The country needs tax cuts on individuals and businesses, drilling and other programs to secure our independence from middle eastern countries and create jobs, more stress on our security - not less, in order for Americans to feel optimistic.

How sad that this Marxist anti-American reparations seeking liar continues to pull the wool over the eyes of the state run media. It's time of Obama, his radical anti-American anti-capitalist czars, thugs, and henchmen to leave the govt. along with 80% of Congress.

Pump the brakes and step back people. Of course he's going to take credit, it's a distraction. Watch what the left hand is doing.

The real quesion is; since when did the American Dream become a hand out?

I thought it was an opportunity.

Any improvement will be negated if "universal healthcare" and/or "cap & trade" is passed. It will be the big "W" or a double dip recession. Or maybe it will finally be a real depression.

Would it be delusional, or diabolical?

Come on Post, If you are going to feed us this BS at least get the date right. I seriously doubt this is posted on Oct 19, 2009. Talk about inventing the news.

Now he's "cautiously" taking credit? He's got balls, that's for sure.

His socialist interference aggravated the problem and extended the problem. We'd have seen recovery sooner, if his ego and he and his team's ignorance of economics, among many things, hadn't been injected.

His "cautiously" taking credit would be laughable if he weren't serious about it.

But, wait: It is laughable.

dear bcs2k:

seems first part of your post is making excuses for no quick fix.

Then you give him credit for your investment portfolio.

Which one is it? are you biased beyond recognition or are you just stupid?

Of course, a direct cash infusion from the govt during cash for clunkers was responsible for ever bit of the "apparent" turn around.

Sure, a pure govt handout of 2billion+ dollars wasn't just a one time artifact.

Simple people in that white house, simple.

This I know for sure, during the Reagan admin, Detroit loss plants and jobs, I graduated from college with no job prospects, during the Clinton Administration, I lived better, raises every year, I am a fundraiser, people donated more, Under the Bush admin, My pay stagnated, people donated less, Now under the Obama administration I have already received a raise and people are pledging to give more. I think you have to give Obama some credit, for stopping and turning things around, because all the Bush admin. did was put policies in place that help the 1% of the population make more money off the middle class.

I'm confused -an economic turnaround - does California know. The state's at 12.2 percent unemployment. Florida's at 10.9. The stock market has lagged along with slight to modest gains.

But then again, more people are on food stamps - Obama's dream to get us all on the government dole. May be that's what he's taking credit for.

SpringMountaineer; Please? You sound rather bitter. What planet do you live on?

@all; The man has only been in office for 9 months. What did you expect? Instant improvement in all sectors? YES The economy has improved under Obama's leadership. It nearly collapsed under Bush. You need to step out of your state of denial and deal with it. My 401K is in better shape now than the last year of Bush's disaster. My stock holdings have doubled. MY job is secure and we are hiring. If you are unemployed I suggest moving where the jobs are. Sitting on your hands and pouting will get you nowhere.

We are moving from a down cycle to an up cycle as would have happened anyway if obama didn't stick his nose into the private sector. When we are further into the up cycle, he won't be so cautious about taking credit for something he had no part in.

Why shouldn't the president take some credit for the amazing economic turnaround? When we're seeing positive numbers we haven't seen in three years, that's a big deal.

So, lemme understand. If things go bad, it's Bush's fault and you inherited it. If things improve the slightest, it's because of Obama.

This guy now thinks he is improving the WORLD economy! He hasn't even fixed the US economy. Unprecedented International cooperation, who is he kidding. He better see a real advancement from unemployment in the next 6 months or he is toast. What an inexperienced piece of crap this guy turned out to be. I am sorry, shouldn't have said that. I must be a racist.

Posted by: werb2 | September 19, 2009 8:42 AM | Report abuse

then obama will take credit for the economy contracting and the loss of tens of millions of jobs...
obama may have stabilized the financial markets and wall street but he has done nothing for the people...
and the people are the ones that vote...
