On '60 Minutes,' Obama Predicts Health Care Will Succeed

Watch CBS Videos Online

By Anne E. Kornblut
President Obama on Sunday ducked a question about whether Rep. Joe Wilson should be rebuked for his outburst during last week's congressional address -- gently noting simply that the current legislative debate had become "a big circus instead of focusing on health care."

Obama, in an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes" airing Sunday night, said the mid-speech exclamation by the South Carolina Republican "was a surprise not just to me, but I think to a lot of his Republican colleagues -- who, you know, said it wasn't appropriate. He apologized afterward, which I ... appreciated. And I've said so."

Obama also repeated his belief that he will achieve a health care bill. He said he remained open to any ideas that could lead to a compromise -- but only if they led to cost savings. In fact, he said he was not convinced that putting caps on malpractice lawsuit judgments, an idea popular with Republicans, would meet that test. He offered no other examples of how he would win support from specific Republicans.

"What I would be willing to do is to consider any ideas out there that would actually work in terms of reducing costs, improving the quality of patient care. So far the evidence I've seen is that caps will not do that," Obama said, according to a transcript released by CBS. "But there are a range of ideas that are out there, offered by doctors' organizations like the AMA, that I think we can explore."

He continued: "You know, I intend to be President for a while and once this bill passes, I own it. And if people look and say, 'You know what? This hasn't reduced my costs. My premiums are still going up 25 percent, insurance companies are still jerkin' me around,' I'm the one who's going to be held responsible."

When Will Obama Confront the Saboteurs and Dr. Strangeloves Within?

• Community-based warrantless GPS-activated vigilante stalking, harassment, financial exploitation enabled by federal and local law enforcement

• Is Team Obama naive, misinformed, or complicit?

I am 61 years old and I do not have health insurance! I just cannot afford one at the moment! And I suspect that many people are in my position. In fact, 14000 people lose their health insurance every day! I fear that many more people will be in that position sooner than they think! There is no such thing as a secure job, and therefore, there is no security to be found in employer sponsored expensive private health insurance.
The majority of Americans are employed by small and medium sized businesses. The cost of private insurance will definitely rise! These businesses have to compete in a global economy. Our main competitors are in China, India and the Far East. They have no health insurance, and are a cheap source of labor and are producing cheap goods! The world does not owe us a living. We have to produce cheaper goods to sell in a competitive global market by all legal means necessary!
Expensive private health insurance is eating into the profits of all our companies - small, medium and large! But most importantly, expensive private health insurance has taken money away from the wages of our workers! They need more spending money, because 70% of our economy is based on consumer spending! The more we spend the more jobs we retain and create! The less we spend the more unemployment there will be!
Expensive private health insurance is bad for profits, bad for wages and bad for jobs! It is slowly but surely killing our economy!
This situation cannot be allowed to continue any longer! We must reduce health cost, and one of the best ways of doing so, is to have a public option, that provides much needed competition for the private insurance companies! Competition is the life blood of our capitalist system! Competition reduces cost for consumers, and keeps more spending money in their pocket! Why are private insurance companies and their political backers so scared of healthy competition?
One of the most important lessons that we should have learnt from our economic meltdown, is that good governance is absolutely essential, to protect and promote the interests of the American people, from greedy and irresponsible individuals and companies, who are hell bent on making profits, irrespective of its harmful and detrimental effects on the economy generally, and people's jobs and livelihood in particular!
Barack Obama was elected President to put an end to the unpatriotic and irresponsible practices; and to put the interest of the American people first, and to create a system where profits can be fairly made, but not at the expense of the destruction of the economy, people's jobs and our core values! Commonsense must prevail and a health care reform bill must be passed with a much needed and necessary public option.

Days after the release of hidden-camera videos led to the firing of four ACORN workers in Baltimore and Washington who assisted an independent filmmaker posing as a pimp to apply for an illegal housing loan for a brothel, a third video has surfaced showing ACORN workers offering the same kind of assistance at the organization's office in Brooklyn, N.Y.

As in their previous undercover stings, filmmaker James O'Keefe, 25, and partner Hannah Giles, 20, who posed as a prostitute, received advice from ACORN workers on how to launder their earnings and avoid detection from law enforcement officials while running a prostitution business.

"You have to find another name for it," an ACORN employee tells the pair seeking a mortgage in the Brooklyn office. "Honesty is not going to get you the house. You can't say what you do for a living."

You Republican geezers have nothing better to do than to bash a bill you haven't even seen while you sit at home collecting Medicaid. You're too funny. Obama's bill WILL PASS. You are once again on the wrong side of history. Deal with it.

snowflower, your name should be snowFLAKE

There's no change that the neanderthal running for Gov. in VA is going to have a blowout victory. You must be sniffing glue or something. Chances are he'll lose and you'll go back to your hole in the ground.

Once Obama signs this into law, he owns it. Any grade school child knows that whatever he signs into law while in office is his responsibility. This is nothing more than a campaign speech. He has done nothing except go around the country and appear on television campaigning for the next election. Obama could care less about what anyone thinks about his plans for the new USSA.

Obama's forced health care policy is like being forced to eat fast food. It will do nothing to improve our lives, but just give us another fat debt that will clog our economy. I say we stop spending and go on a diet.

No hard hitting questions from CBS. Croft almost sounded apologetic for asking even his softball questions. On trade, Obama gave up the country for a the unions by imposing trade restrictions on China. I guess he hasn't figured it out that China owns us and will reltailate at will. And, where is the reporting on the march this weekend? I've seen estimates from 450K to 1 million or more. The profile on the people who attended have to be like this. They pay most of the taxes, give more to charities than liberals, and have skills to that provide them and their families a good living. For the trip to Washington, thousands of workers and businesses profited from the money spent getting the protestors to Washington. The protestors are the people who make America work!

This is the same person who predicted that reinforcing an undermanned army would some how make its job harder. I, for one, will therefore take his 'predictions' with a grain of salt.

Who didn't see this coming?

50 million new patients? Expect doc shortages
Revamped health care system could swamp primary care physicians

"To keep up with the demand for primary care doctors, the country will need to add another 40,000 to the existing 100,000 doctors over the next decade or face a soaring backlog, according to Dr. Ted Epperly, president of the Kansas-based American Academy of Family Physicians."

"It's like giving everyone free bus passes, but there are only two buses," he said."

If the NJ and VA governor's races are blowout victories for the Republican candidates, then Obama may not see another piece of his agenda passed in his first term. This would be a great thing for America as is would stop Obama's socialist/Marxist/fascist remake of the USA dead in its tracks.

Lets see....BAXTER INTERNATIONAL received some h5n1 viruses from the W.H.O. and then amplified it to a 60+% kill rate and then delivered it to European countries marked for human inoculation where it did kill! BAXTER was never held responsible before a world court. BAXTER"s C.E.O. and 4 of the B.O.D.'s from BAXTER were in-part of the OBAMA in 08 campaign. OBAMA has stock in BAXTER ( and yes I know it goes into a blind trust while he's president). BAXTER is a recipient of some of the 7+ billion dollars that's going towards the h1n1 vaccinations.BAXTER also has a bio lab just outside Mexico City (just a few miles away) where the h1n1 first broke out...just food for thought. The drug manufacturers are one of the largest lobbying bodies in Washington D.C.Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld all have had interest (stocks) in major drug companies either before, during, and after their terms in office. It's known now that the currant strain of h1n1 is comprised of avian, swine and human R.N.A. from separate parts of the world and that it would take a bio lab to develop this strain...its mechanically impossible for it to have occurred naturally. The C.D.C. has on it's own web site an admittance of their involvement in developing the 1918 virus know as the h1n1. For proof of this go to and answers/reconstruction of the 1918 pandemic virus. Here you will find that the C.D.C,the F.D.A.,the N.I.H. and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology all contributed to the re-development of the 1918 virus. Reconstruction of the complete 1918 virus began in August of 2005. The drug giant GLAXO SMITH developed the h1n1 anti-virus vaccination a year before the out break! The OBAMA administration was going to allow the federally banned ADJUVANTS THIMEROSAL and SQUALENE to be used in the h1n1 vaccinations coming out this fall.If a national health plan was to be implemented it would only bring closer the major drug companies and OUR government officials. If this were to be allowed...I wonder what government (federally mandated)experiment would be perpetrated on the American people next???

He will get a bill passed. No one will be happy with it, so perhaps that's a sign of a good deal.
