Van Jones Sends Supporters a Letter

By Garance Franke-Ruta

Van Jones, the White House environmental adviser who resigned Sept. 6 under fire from conservatives, thanked supporters Tuesday for their "outpouring of love and support" and asked them to support President Obama's goals, work for green jobs generally and to "speak up for me via your favorite blogs...on message boards and all of your favorite social networking platforms."

Jones did not provide details of any internal White House discussions that might have preceded his resignation, and said he had remained silent for the past 10 days in order to "not to be a distraction during a key moment in the Obama Presidency."

But, he promised, "In due course, I will be offering my perspective on what has happened--including correcting the record about false charges. In the meantime, I must get my family affairs in order and sort through numerous offers and options."

He also offered a statement of unwavering support for Obama. "I want to be clear that I have nothing but love and admiration for President Obama and the entire administration," he wrote. "White House staffers are there to serve and support the President, not the other way around."

The letter was published Wednesday by the environmental Web magazine Grist.

Criticism of Jones's past statements and associations threatened to become a distraction early this month, as Obama sought to focus public attention on his health-care reform agenda. Jones issued two public apologies before resigning as a top adviser to the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

One was for signing a petition in 2004 from the group that questioned whether officials in President George W. Bush's administration "may indeed have deliberately allowed 9/11 to happen, perhaps as a pretext for war," and the other for using a crude term to describe Republicans in a speech he gave before joining the administration.

Addendum to post, below:

Do the conclusions of this noted mechanical engineer about the collapse of World Trade Center buildings 1, 2 and 7 have something to do with the apparent censoring of my earlier attempted post?

Check out this web site and consider the evidence presented:

This journalist's post, entitled "Van Jones: Scapegoated to keep the truth hidden about 9-11," elicited the "held for blog owner" message, despite the fact that The Washington Post's political blogs to not "hold" comments unless software detects foul language.

I believe what happened is a case of real-time interception and blatant censorship and/or prior restraint of the telecommunications of American citizens by U.S. government operatives who use warrantless surveillance as a pretext to harass and censor.

I have attempted to post the comment at the following thread of the ACLU "Freedom Blog." Please scroll to the bottom and read up:
