Obama Indonesia Trip Set for 2010
While all eyes domestically are on President Obama's big decision about whether to increase forces in Afghanistan, the president and administration are also making some moves involving other nations.
Obama will visit Indonesia next year, Agence France Presse reports today:
JAKARTA -- US President Barack Obama will visit Indonesia next year to "showcase the importance of growing US-Indonesia bilateral relations", the US embassy said Wednesday.
The embassy statement echoed comments from a spokesman for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who also said 2010 had been earmarked for Obama's trip to the world's most populous Muslim-majority country.
It said Yudhoyono met Obama on the margins of the Group of 20 summit in Pittsburgh last month and they "agreed on the importance of having a visit that would showcase the importance of growing US-Indonesia bilateral relations."...
The statement ends speculation that Obama would visit Jakarta in November when he attends his first summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in neighbouring Singapore.
On the other side of the globe, The New York Times' Adam Nossiter also reports today that the recent crisis provoked by the public rape of female anti-government protesters in Guinea has drawn the attentions of the Obama State Department:
CONAKRY, Guinea -- The Obama administration has injected itself into the crisis in Guinea, taking the unusual step of sending a senior diplomat to protest the mass killings and rapes here last week.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "appropriate actions" against a military government that she said "cannot remain in power."
"It was criminality of the greatest degree, and those who committed such acts should not be given any reason to expect that they will escape justice," Mrs. Clinton told reporters in Washington. She said that the nation's leader, Capt. Moussa Dadis Camara, and his government "must turn back to the people the right to choose their own leaders."
