Church of the Presidents Gets Presidential Visit

By Jacqueline Salmon
A rare sight in Washington -- the Obamas at church. For the fourth time since being elected president, President Obama and family attended church in the District on Sunday. This time it was St. John's Episcopal Church, the same church they attended at Easter and the day of Obama's inauguration.

It's a traditional choice for presidents. Every president since James Madison has worshiped at the church, located across Lafayette Square from the White House, at some point in their administrations. Some made it over only once, while others became regulars. The 200-year-old house of worship recently underwent a $6.5 million renovation.

No sign yet that Obama has settled on a regular church. He has said in recent interviews that he is reluctant to settle into one particular church -- because of the logistics and the political implications that it brings. Most of his church attendance has been at the private chapel at Camp David.

I STILL BELIEVE IN ONE GOD. IT DOES NOT MATTER TO ME WHAT YOU CALL HIM, I JUST KEEP HOPEING0 THAT ALL OF YOU WHO THINK YOU HAVE GOD'S EAR, WILL LISTEN TO WHAT HE HAS TO SAY.

IT SEEMS THAT THOSE WHO HEAR ARE TRYING TO LIVE IN PEACE AND LOVE THEIR NEIGHBORS.

ONE THING AMAZES ME, IF ALL THE BORN AGAIN CHRISTIANS BELIEVE THAT THE ROAD TO SALVATION IS THROUGH JESUS CHRIST, THEN WHY DO THEY SUPPORT ISREAL AND DENOUNCE THE MUSLIMS, WHY NOT THE HINDU'S, AND OTHER RELIGIONS THAT DON'T RECOGNIZE JESUS CHRIST AS THEIR SAVIOR? DO WE HAVE SELECTIVE SALVATION? YOU CAN BE EXEMPT FROM WORSHIPPING JESUS CHRIST IF YOU CONTRIBUTE TO OUR CAMPAIGN FUND. YOU WILL NEVER BE RECOGNIZED IF YOU HAVE OIL OR OTHER RESOURCES WE NEED. WE WILL FIGHT YOU IN THE NAME OF JESUS.

WHY NOT SEND MISSIONARIES TO ALL OF THESE COUNTRIES INSTEAD OF SOLDIERS?
OH! I ALMOST FORGOT, WE ALREADY DID THAT. FIRST COMES THE HOLY ONES, THEN COMES THE SOLDIERS, THEN THEY TAKE YOUR WEALTH AND RESOURCES FOR YOUR OWN BEST INTEREST.

WHERE IS JEREMIAH WRIGHT WHEN YOU NEED HIM? HE IS NOT MUSLIM BUT PREACHED FROM THE SCRIPTURES THAT NO ONE READS THESE DAYS.

Surely somewhere in the Washington, D.C. area there is a preacher like Jeremiah Wright.

Dear dottydo -- Please DON'T. The vast majority of Americans do not believe your carp and we are sick of it. And, anyway, in the spirit of Colin Powell -- if the Obamas were Muslin - who CARES!!!!

It said one can pray even in the mountains.

The Black tradition revers going to church for spiritual upliftment. But again whether its at this church or at Camp David-- with all that he has on his plate, church should be assigned (lol). That said its wonderful to see the President and his family off to church. Not to menton-- a family that prays together, stays together. From the man of "Peace" that sends a great message. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdqdsWR_hhI

Selling again.

Now, no one is really buying.

Obama's celebration dinner for Ramadan Sept. 1, 2009 seems more appropriate for who this man (with no real past), might actually be.

MR. PRESIDENT/VPOTUS/TEAM OBAMA: May your faith be your strength to finally restore human and civil rights to America:

SECRET NATIONWIDE FED MULTI-AGENCY PROGRAM DEPLOYS SILENT, CLASSIFIED MICROWAVE/LASER RADIATION DIRECTED ENERGY WEAPONS SYSTEMS AGAINST 'TARGETED' U.S. CITIZENS

• Mind- and body-degrading electromagnetic assaults, vigilante warrantless GPS-activated "community stalking" harassment and vandalism, financial sabotage violate human and civil rights of thousands of unjustly targeted Americans nationwide...

...an ideologically-driven "slow-kill" genocide hiding in plain sight, its victims slandered as "delusional" -- why complicit federal and local authorities refuse to investigate government-enabled crimes against humanity and the Constitution.

WHEN WILL TEAM OBAMA REMOVE FROM POWER THE SABOTEURS AND DR. STRANGELOVES -- BUSH-CHENEY HOLDOVERS -- WHO HAVE PERPETUATED WAR CRIMES AGAINST THE AMERICAN PEOPLE?

I find it quite sad that DROSE1 is likely correct that the Obamas are not going to be able to find a home church without drawing flocks of haters. Perhaps the better solution is to have Mrs. Robinson take her grandchildren to church, if the family feels that is important, while the parents worship privately. Surely few could be hateful enough to attack a senior citizen and two pre-teen children.

I would like to see the president, and particularly his children, "churched." But he is right to hold off on joining anywhere. His enemies will visit their vitriol on any place he chooses to worship.

For instance, there were people picketing today a K-2 school in New Jersey b/c some of the kids, led by their teachers, sang a pro-Obama song in February. These are people's children.

On "worshiped": I would have chosen a different word. To me, it implies a level of involvement in service that I think probably does not apply to most presidents who attended.

Saying that every president since Madison has "worshiped" there is correct and simply means that every one of those presidents has attended a service or services there. It does not mean, nor does the church claim, that every president has been a parishioner.

This article says every president since James Madison worshiped at this church. But JFK was Catholic. Did he really go to an Episcopal church?

This family is going to have a tough time if they join a local church and start regularly attending services and Sunday school.

I have a strong feeling that the wingnuts and protesters will come out in force, poisoning the experience for the entire congregation.
