Obama Delays Trip to Hill, Will Pay Visit Friday to Walter Reed

Associated Press
President Obama is pushing back a trip to Capitol Hill to discuss the proposed health-care overhaul with lawmakers.

Obama had planned to head to the Capitol on Friday. Now the White House schedule shows Obama planning to visit the Capitol on Saturday.

On Friday afternoon, Obama plans to visit Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

White House officials say the trip to Walter Reed had been scheduled before the fatal shootings Thursday at Fort Hood, Tex. They insist that the visit to Walter Reed, Obama's first as president, is separate from the incident at Fort Hood.

The last thing that the leadership at Ft Hood needs is the Commander-In-Chief on the base.

The secret service can take care of the president's safety. That's what they are for. It seems to me that the survivors of the massacre would welcome the comforting presence of their commander-in-chief as they try to regain a sense of safety and recover from a very traumatic situation that will have lasting effects. If the president is anything, he is calming and solicitous, and I'm sure as they try to regain a sense of well-being, all at Ft. Hood will recall that their c-o-c cared enough about them to visit at a time when they most needed him.
Compare to Bush NOT visiting after Katrina.

The last thing that the leadership at Ft Hood needs is the Commander-In-Chief on the base. When things calm down, maybe it's a good idea, but right now there is a serious criminal investigation going on and law enforcement resources don't need to be pulled from that to support the security requirements that come with a visit from the POTUS.

What I understand if the president visits is that a whole bunch of law enforcement personnel are required plus the Secret Service & of course, street closures/no fly zone etc. It would not be prudent at this early stage for him to go & distract from the work that law enforcement/FBI/Military etc are doing so to equate the Copenhagen trip with one to a tradegy at a US military base at this point seems so disrespectful to the military.

The Commander in Chief needs to cancel his rescheduled 'scheduled visit' and first-time as President trek over to Walter Reed Medical Center this afternoon, and instead, jump on Air Force One and head on down to Ft. Hood, Texas. Afterall, it's a much shorter flight than heading on over to Copenhagen on a moment's notice.
