Palin, Biden spar over N.Y. congressional race

By Garance Franke-Ruta
Quoting Ann Coulter, former Alaska governor Sarah Palin took to Facebook on Monday to spar with Vice President Biden over energy policy and the special election in New York's 23rd Congressional District.

Voters in Upstate New York will go to the polls Tuesday to choose between Democrat Bill Owens and Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman after moderate Republican Dede Scozzafava, sensing defeat, dropped out Saturday and threw her support to Owens. Polls show the two candidates in a virtual dead heat.

The vice president stumped for Owens on Monday at a rally in Watertown, N.Y., where he had some pointed words for Palin, who was an early and influential backer of Hoffman.

"Sarah Palin thinks the answer to energy is 'Drill, baby, drill,' " Biden said, according to ABC News, of his onetime vice presidential competitor. "It's a lot more complicated, Sarah."

Palin, who has developed a substantial presence on Facebook and now has more than 950,000 Facebook friends, quickly sent a retort out across the social network. "As the vice president knows, I have always advocated an all-of-the-above approach to American energy independence," she wrote in her "Response to Vice President Biden's Comments Today About My Position On Energy Independence."

"The vice president's extreme opposition to domestic energy development goes all the way back to 1973 when he opposed the Alaska pipeline bill. As Ann Coulter pointed out, 'Biden cast one of only five votes against the pipeline that has produced more than 15 billion barrels of oil, supplied nearly 20 percent of this nation's oil, created tens of thousands of jobs, added hundreds of billions of dollars to the U.S. economy and reduced money transfers to the nation's enemies by about the same amount,'" she wrote.

"There's one way to tell Vice President Biden that we're tired of folks in Washington distorting our message and hampering our nation's progress: Hoffman, Baby, Hoffman!"

Some here give the Quittacuda too little credit...after all, she could have endorsed any number of GOP candidates, but she doesn't want GOP cred. She knows the Base of the Base is her only support. So naturally, she looks around America (or rather, an aide with an actual analytical thought process looks for her) and finds the reddest necked, gun-totinist, backwoods livinist, hate cityfolkiest place with a Flat Earth (the soon-to-be Party the 'cuda will form) Candidate, which would be upstate New York, and endorses him. This practically assures some right right right wing cred when he wins.
Then she will go around challenging the "RINO" part of the GOP, calling for a 'return to REAL Republican values', etc.
This is because she knows the G-Old-P is not interested in a dim bulb candidate who would get smoked like a salmon against either of Obama's daughters in a debate. So she does what she does best...she quits. The GOP, in this case. "Fine," she says to herself, "I'll just steal their base and run as an independent."

This will be fine, because she will siphon off the whackjob GOP element they spent so much time kissing up to last November, split the Right vote, and Democratic champaign all around.
If she somehow decides to enter the GOP primary run, her own side will skewer her in order to save their own hides (and stupid is stupid, no matter who points it out), leaving the Dems unsullied by that mudfight. Again, Dem Perignon all around.

So set up a lawn chair and enjoy the fireworks, Dems. Just keep cool and you won't even have to acknowledge her. But it will be interesting how many teabaggers threaten to move to Canada after her annihilation.

What does the flaky former Governor of Alaska know about upstate New York? Oh yeah, another state where she can see right into Canada! For a moment there I forgot about her impressive foreign affairs credentials.

Biden has the mental faculties of a mollusk.

In 1973 this derisory magic mollusk following the "leave it in the ground" liberals claimed the Alyeska Pipeline would only support oil supplies for six years! Its still pumping oil. Biden the magic mollusk also argued with conservationists and environmental groups that the pipeline would prevent caribou from being able to transverse the wilderness blocking traditional migration routes. The Davidson Ditch disproved this flimsy theory. When Alyeska pipeline drew up plans to bury part and raise part for 100% caribou egress Biden the magic mollusk argued with conservationists that the "hot" oil in the pipeline would melt the permafrost in the buried portion and undermine the stanchions in the raised. Syrofoam and gravel in Alyeskas plans showed the fallacy of this argument.

Sensing the "leave it in the ground" argument was failing conservationists and the Magic Mollusk switched from contesting the pipeline on NEPA grounds to supporting legislation that was doomed to fail. Specifically A costly and (at the time) ineffective pipeline twice as long, a Trans Canada Railroad or pipeline. Biden the Magic Mollusk signed on to the defeated Mondale-Bayh Amendment. In and out of the courts back and fourth America argued and the Mollusk did too, magically. In August of 1973 Biden the Magic Mollusk voted agaist Mike Gravels amendment to settle the NEPA debate once and for all and allow for a larger right of way satifying the Mineral Leasing Act. With a vote of 49-49 it took Vice President Spiro Agnew's vote to tie break.

The frivolous insanity and partisan opposition to meeting America's energy needs was compounded two months later in October 1973 when OPEC embargoed America. With 35% of our oil supplies cut off, astronomical prices at the pump, and gas rationing Biden the Magic Mollusk STILL voted against the Trans-Alaska Pipeline by opposing the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Authorization Act!

Considering all this absurd history from this...Mollusk, who would you trust more with solutions to our energy needs? Biden or Palin?

Bidden's votes are often a minority protest to green tech or mileage issues being excluded from legislation - this is some done when his vote would not alter the outcome of the bill. His comprehensively examined record is solid and clear.... green tech all the way!

We don't really know what Sarah's record is because she quit...

Palin hides from real-time comprehensive counter questioning - behind her face book facade.

Palin is relegated to virtual reality politics.

Because she is dim witted - we know her record!

Funny how Palin haters can't even acknowledge when she is right on an issue (and Biden mistaken).

Palins July 14/09 Post Op-Ed "Cap and Tax Dead End" calls for creating jobs and developing ALL energy sources in America (including Green tech).

Does Biden favor American billions and American technology continuing to support off-shore drilling in Brazil and Africa ? but not America ? Of course he does. He is another silly Democrat who cares little about American energy jobs.

Biden always votes green technology and mileage issues.

Just think we could have saved all that oil and have better cars by now! But Republicans always vote against fuel mileage requirements ( well of course - because that is a government take over - Ha!).

Palin is more bush brain ideas. That ain't my America!

Let your concerns be put to rest here ... You know ... the media that gets all tingly when people chant mindlessly?

The "PROMINENCE GIVEN TO HER" ... AN EXPIERENCED GOVERNOR ... is certainly more validated than that of a NEIGHBORHOOD ORGANIZER surrounded by TERRORIST FRIENDS AND AFRO CENTRIST , RACIST PREACHERS !

" Sarah doesn't care about right or wrong ? " She dropped out because of her priority to her family after the CANNIBALS on the left and their SERVILE MEDIA started peppering her family for the stew ... just to get eyes ((OFF)) of the SLEWFOOT in charge of them .

small error in my calculation, trying to do too many things at one time, the $1680 is at $2.80 a gallon, so add $600 to the expense, making it $2280, and reduce the savings by the same, to be $420.

This makes more sense, sorry for the math error.

Although I laugh at Sarah's dimwittedness it concerns me that she is a reflection of the millions of Americans who support her.

Similarly, look at the great many Americans who cling to the diatribes that emanate from Fox-TV.

People like Sarah have been making policy and law in the US since the Union was formed. The prominence given to her and her inane remarks and her pretensions of being learned, knowledgeable and experienced in life and government administration are unquestioningly absorbed by many Americans because they think in the same simplistic way as she does.

God save America and God save the world if nutters like her are put in charge of the steering wheel.

Palin does not care about being right or wrong. She resents being left behind, having her points of view being challenged because that invalidates her as a person. I have assumed that many of her followers have the same kind of resentments as the basis for standing up for their beliefs.

20% wow, if we increased the fuel economy of our vehicles by 5, or 10, MPG, we could probably get that to 30%. or more. If we bought less imported crap that needed to be shipped all over the world we could get that to 35%. If we had more efficient appliances, light bulbs and air conditioners, we could get that to 40%. All without producing any more oil that we currently do. Our demand would decline, and our imports could be slashed. Just think how many good jobs that would create, in manufacturing and hospitality. But, none of those jobs would be for lobbyists and PR flacks and politicians, so I guess no one will ever really push this idea, which is the resolution.
What about a $1.00 per gallon gas tax. Hypothetically, if you drive 15000 miles per year, and your vehicle gets 15 miles per gallon, you use 1000 gallons of gas. At todays price, $2.80, that is $2,800. If there is a $1 per gallon tax, making the gas $3.80, and you increase your mileage to 20 MPG, you would save just about break even. Your new gas usage is 750 gallons, at $3.80 which is $2,850. Now, if you drive 20000 miles a year, at 15 mpg you use 1333 gallons, or $3732. Increasing to 20 MPG, you just about break even, 1000 gallons at $3.80 is $3800.

Now, if you increase your mileage by 10 mpg, you will use 600 gallons in my first example, at $3.80 a gallon comes to $1680, or a SAVINGS OF $1020. HOLY COW!!!!
In my second example, 20000 miles per year, your gas usage becomes 800 gallons, or at $3.80 a gallon, $3040, a savings of $692.00 WOW, INCREASE TAXES RESULTS IN MORE MONEY IN YOUR POCKET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought she was a muppet.

Palin can think whatever she wishes about Biden's vote against the Alaskan oil. She could do us all a favor, however, and quit repeating statistics about the pipeline that we all know are false.

No matter how many times she repeats it, the Alaskan pipeline has not supplied supplied nearly 20 percent of this nation's oil". It produces about 15% of the oil produced in the united states. This represents only about 5% of the oil consumed by the United States.

One would think that the former governor of Alaska would know that.

The current economic downturn was caused by a lack of petroleum to fuel further growth. Certainly many unsound financial practices were exposed as a result but the primary cause was the unprecedented runup in the price of petroleum.

The Democrats can play pretend that the huge gambles on growth on Wall Street were the primary cause and their stunted development envious followers will nod approvingly but the cause was an energy crisis, something this administration has not addressed. Biden weighs in on Afghan troop deployment while Palin pushes her guy in a district suckling at the socialist breast of an unneeded for defense Ft. Drum. I forgot conservatives were all for useless military expenditures, regardless of what Gates and our armed forces require. Can you say starwars Reaganites?

Biden is just another stupid liberal As$ hole. He's been wrong on just about everything he opens his big fat mouth about.
Another liberal incompetent like his slug of a boss, Odumbo.

It's an "affirmation" against RINOs, that's for sure. Maybe if the Republicans had run an actual conservative (rather than McCain) against liberal Obama, they would not have lost last time around.

Posted by: JakeD | November 2, 2009 6:12 PM | Report abuse

I think it's pretty funny that conservatives are crowing about winning a conservative district that was theirs to lose.

If Democrats win this, it would be a fluke caused by the spastic convulsions of the right; if they lose, as they have since the Civil War, it's hardly an affirmation of conservative resurgence.

But I guess the GOP is so desperate for victories, it'll settle for victory over its own moderates, and throw a party celebrating success in driving them out of its coalition. That's some kind of advanced strategery, there, guys. Ever heard the word "Pyrrhic?" Many more such victories to you.

That was only part of my question. Here it is (one last time):

"If the 'RepubliKKKans' nominate Palin for President, AND SHE WINS OFFICE, will you then agree that said entire political party was not destroyed and rumors of its demise were premature?"

It's a simple "yes" or "no" question. Either you will agree or not.

Poor NY-23!
Poster children for the failed KKKonservative political philosophy are flooding through sewer cracks and raising a real stink there.
C'mon guys, we remember last fall when you said let the banks fail, let the market sort it out -- of course your brain trust Greenspan, after leading the country down the 'No, no musn't regulate anything' path, then announced "I was wrong -- for 40 years." Shocking, simply shocking.
Can't imagine why you haters are fighting so hard -- unless you feel your philosophy and party sliding down the steep, slippery slope of extinction. And, since you believe you can't evolve, there's no other choice.
Go with God, but go.

This is what political support for the grassroots Gestapo has wrought:

SECRET FED PROGRAM SILENTLY TORTURES, IMPAIRS U.S. CITIZENS WITH MICROWAVE/LASER RADIATION, SAYS MAINSTREAM JOURNALIST

* "Directed energy weapons," portable units and a nationwide installation camouflaged as cell towers, induce weakness, exhaustion, physical and neurological impairment, strokes, aneurysms, cancer -- and many victims do not realize what is making them sick.

* Thousands of Americans held hostage in their own homes to police-protected, fed-supported vigilante "community policing" stalking units, equipped with warrantless GPS devices, who vandalize and terrorize unjustly "targeted individuals" and their families.

* Regional Homeland Security- administered "fusion centers" reportedly serve as command centers for covert electromagnetic radiation attacks, pervasive surveillance, financial sabotage of those identified as "dissidents," "trouble-makers" or slandered as threats to society.

* Use of microwave weaponry to torture and impair political opponents recently confirmed by deposed Honduras President Manuel Zelaya.

* Pleas for justice, to local police and FBI, go unanswered -- as do demands for a Department of Justice Civil Rights Division investigation and congressional hearings.

"These are crimes against humanity and the Constitution, being perpetrated under the cover of national security and 'safe streets' by multiple federal and local agencies and commands -- an American genocide hiding in plain sight, enabled by the naivete of those who think 'it can't happen here.'" -- Victor Livingston, former reporter for WTXF-TV Philadelphia, Phila. Go, Sarah, Go! Democrats can only hope that she continues.

The Republicans, by emphasizing the most extreme and polarized of their members, are thankfully cutting their noses to spite their faces.

Meanwhile, across the significant domains of health care, the economy (the largest gains in the S and P since the Great Depression), and America’s role in the world, Obama intelligently, thoughtfully, and without Flight Suit Grandiosity, makes the changes the nation needs.

Look at every area–if you go to the 24/7 Daily Obama News Site, the LT, you can see the gains in every area–each day:

I guess she has abandoned the Republican party now in support of the third party candidate so now she is a fringe at best political dropout quitter. Is this the best the Limpbuugh-Krystal group can do?

And he will become part of the rightwingnut freak show along with Palin and Bachmann. His teeth will become a national joke. He will have no influence whatsoever. So your point is what?

If foot-in-the-mouth biden wants to play dirty dozen with Sarah Palin, he'll lose because he is mentally unarmed.
Liberal socialist democrats like biden cling to the idea that we should suffer by going without, rather than tap our huge reserves of fossil fuels.
Tuesday's elections will begin the purging process of removing supporters of the obama socialist agenda. The silent majority will be heard and the attempt at bloating government and taxes put to sleep. The Tea Parties were a call to arms and America has responded.

Biden and Palen have two different views. Palen is thinking about her constituents who want free money and to drive gas guzzlers as cheaply as possible. Biden is thinking long-term. I say, let OPEC pump oil for us and keep ours in the ground. You think the oil in the ground is worth something today, let me tell you something about compounding interest... 30 or 50 years from now. Now we primarily require oil to continue being wasteful without any regard for future generations of Americans. Sometime within the next 20 years the world-wide increasing rate of consumpution is going to pass the rate of oil discovery. 50 or 100 years out, oil is going to be precious stuff, even if we are able to convert to other energy sources; hydrogen, solar, fusion, or whatever. I'd prefer we burn through OPEC's wealth now and beggar them later. Chavez is the crowing cock on the roost right now, but his populist wisdom is burning through Venezuela's oil wealth with domestic consumption at 17 cents/gallon. There, my friends, is an energy-inefficient economy. Chavez is out-Palining Palin.

Ann Coulter?!!? I cannot believe the KKKonservatives haven't hidden this waste of space somewhere. It's only a little funny that 'people' listen to her hate filled messages, it's mostly just pathetic.

Hard to imagine that the RepubliKKKans haven't found a faster way to distance themselves from this kind of garbage. Guess we should be thankful that we're getting to witness an entire political party destroyed because they sold out to extremists.

The 23rd Congressional district in NYS has been in Republican hands I believe since the civil war. To say tomorrow's election will determine who has more influence, Biden or Palin, is giving it way too much importance. Just as the election won't be a national referendum on whether the Republicans should boot out all the moderates. Nor should it be interpreted to mean that all of President Obama's policies are okay if Owens wins in the 23rd. There are those with political agendas that would like you to believe that the race, and its endorsers, are the end all and the be all - but, really, it's a race in a predominantly Republican rural district that has over the years moved a little bit towards the middle. But, other than two governor's races, it was the only game in town for the media, the pundits, and the politicos, to sink their teeth into. This time tomorrow there will be a hundred more types of spin.

Sarah Palin's couple of Facebook posts were worth more than the couple hundred thousand dollars from Club for Growth. You'll see that tomorrow. As for returning to "The Fix", I am not, especially since I promised mark_in_austin that I would simply ignore drindl and the other one.

It's stunning to see how the republican party has overnight become an extreme lunatic-right fringe party led by people who aren't even in public office, ie. Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and Joe the Plumber.

Biden is the vice president of the US. Palin has a lot of friends on Facebook.
