Primary source: Obama on 'unsettling' food security report

President Obama on Monday released a statement in response to the USDA report on the nation's food security (PDF), which determined that the number of Americans who lack dependable access to adequate food shot up last year to 49 million, the largest number since the government has been keeping track. His statement follows:

As American families prepare to gather for Thanksgiving, we received an unsettling report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that found that hunger rose significantly last year. This trend was already painfully clear in many communities across our nation, where food stamp applications are surging and food pantry shelves are emptying.

It is particularly troubling that there were more than 500,000 families in which a child experienced hunger multiple times over the course of the year. Our children's ability to grow, learn, and meet their full potential - and therefore our future competitiveness as a nation - depends on regular access to healthy meals.

My Administration is committed to reversing the trend of rising hunger. The first task is to restore job growth, which will help relieve the economic pressures that make it difficult for parents to put a square meal on the table each day. But we are also taking targeted steps to prevent Americans from experiencing hunger. Earlier this year, we extended help to those hit hardest by this economic downturn by boosting SNAP benefits. And Secretary Vilsack is working hard to make sure eligible families are able to access those benefits as well as the School Lunch and Breakfast Program. In addition, a bill I signed into law last month invests $85 million in new strategies to prevent children from experiencing hunger in the summer.

Hunger is a problem that we can solve together, and I look forward to working with Congress to pass a strong child nutrition bill that will help children get the healthy meals they need to grow and succeed - and help keep America competitive in the decades to come.

What good is throwing more taxpayers money for food to obese people on food stamps. You are contributing to the unhealthy and creating obesity in the US by increasing food stamps. Maybe eating less will improve their health. Oh, I forgot, you want to pay for their food, create obesity, and then you want to pay for Obama ACORN Head healthcare and pay for their diabetes medicine. Get a brain and solve the problem not the symptoms.

"My Administration is committed to reversing the trend of rising hunger. The first task is to restore job growth..."

Very Wrong Answer. Correct answer is to state that the Administration will immediately either through Executive Order or through emergency act of Congress PROVIDE funds and food for food distribution, food kitchens, faith based services, municipal services, educational institutions, National Guard facilities and shelters.

The first answer to HUNGER is FOOD and not rhetoric.

The scary parts of this are: if a Republican won and said this we'd be over him like a very cheap suit...AND...same for Bush if he said it.

Obama better wake his privileged, private school self up and open his eyes.

Wow. None of you seemed to read the report. You can't seem to put your petty BS aside for a minute to actually read the report or the accompanying article. So President Obama is responsible for things that happened in 2008? That is really interesting; a fantasy-land reality of sorts. Read before you react and, please, put your pettiness aside. There are solutions to these problems and our federal, state and local governments are only part of the solution. But governments (note I did not say politicians) work for the people and the people have myriad responsibilities assure this. Food insecurity is a serious problem. Give to a food bank if you can afford it. I do. Give time if you don't have money. I will. But do something instead of ranting.

I just feel that Obama can not take the time to worry about the poor going hungry, when his buddies on Wall Street are "To big to Starve". Let's make sure this administration takes care of our titans of capitalism first. I am sure that Summers & Geithner see it that way.

We elected President Barack Obama because he promised changes. I am a former Democrat and Obama campaign volunteer. A retired federal worker. Once Obama took office, almost all federal agencies went crazy misusing taxpayers dollars like if there was no end. The main culprits: DHS, ICE, CBP, Defense, Justice, HUD, just to name a few. Try comparing the salary of an ICE supervisory criminal investigator with DEA, FBI and other similar agencies. Now, if you are assigned to an internal affairs unit, you get a higher grade at ICE and CBP. Misuse of funds in buying or leasing GOVs by ICE, CBP for GS-1811s criminal investigators is hard to believe. Yet check Google and the the different U.S. Attorneys' offices. The arrest and conviction of top ICE management official is very high. No one listens....until somebody snaps...then our federal top leaders start pointing fingers. Obama needs to stop all federal spending, review the ICE's and CBP's promotion system....and listen to the GAO investigators and auditors.

Nobody but the press believes anything from govt. spin doctors anymore, and Obama is 100-percent spin. (?When are we pulling out of Afghanistan, dude?)

This is just another agency that wants to fatten its budget. No doubt illegal aliens are many of the "Americans" counted in this survey.

Americans have an obesity problem. Even those who rely on food stamps have problems with obesity--not just overweight--obese.

ATTN: White House staff / Congress / A.G. Holder (staff pls. fwd.):

How many Americans go hungry because a secret, multi-agency federal program has unjustly targeted them for financial ruin and relentless community vigilante stalking, harassment, vandalism...

...and silent, health-degrading microwave and laser radiation impairment and torture?
