Administration sees 'some linkage' between Detroit suspect, al-Qaeda

By Anne E. Kornblut
HONOLULU - President Obama and his top advisers received new information Monday night about the attempted airliner attack in Detroit that has led them to believe there is "some linkage" with al-Qaeda, a senior administration official said Tuesday.

The official said the president and his top advisers are "increasingly confident" that Al Qaeda was involved in the attempted attacker's plans.

Obama, in his remarks to reporters earlier in the day, said that if intelligence about the suspect had been handled differently he would have been blocked from boarding a plane for the United States. Senior officials said that was among the new details that the president learned in a conference call with top national security officials - National Security Adviser Jim Jones, his top counterterrorism expert John Brennan, and deputy National Security adviser Tom Donilon - on Tuesday morning.

The new information "had to do with information that was in possession of the government...that spoke to both where the suspect had been, what some of his thinking and plans were, what some of the plans of Al Qaeda were," the senior official said. The official added that the details had not been correlated as effectively as they had been in earlier instances of thwarted attacks, especially preceding the arrest of a young Afghan, Najibullah Zazi, who sought to build bombs after visiting an al-Qaeda training camp.

The flaws were twofold, officials said. National security operatives did not follow all of the established procedures, and the procedures themselves were flawed. Obama has ordered a complete review, and has asked for preliminary findings to be returned to him on Thursday of this week.

After staying quiet on the incident in its immediate aftermath, Obama appeared in front of television cameras for the second time in two days. His advisers insisted he was not reacting to criticism about his earlier silence. But the president left no doubt that he is working throughout his vacation here as Republicans continued to attack his -- and his homeland security director's -- handling of the matter.

Obama referred to Secretary Janet Napolitano by name in his remarks, signaling that her job is safe despite calls for her resignation after her initial claim that the existing security protocol had worked. His top advisers said Napolitano "absolutely" retains his full confidence.

NewsBusters -- Flight 253: Media Ignoring Two-Day Gap Between Preliminary AQ Linkage and Obama Team's 'Some Linkage' Acknowledgment

So why does someone else always have to do the heavy lifting that Ann Kornblut and the WaPo will not do?

1) Do you consider this attempted terrorist attack a MINOR ISSUE?

2) Do you think it would have been "minor" to the friends and families of those KILLED had this terrorist attack been successful?

3) Do YOU think that America is at war with terrorists, yes or no?

Posted by: JakeD | December 30, 2009 1:10 PM | Report abuse

SOME linkage?! Say what you will about GWB, he never denied that we were at war! Here is Dick Cheney’s full statement on the matter:

"As I’ve watched the events of the last few days it is clear once again that President Obama is trying to pretend we are not at war. He seems to think if he has a low-key response to an attempt to blow up an airliner and kill hundreds of people, we won’t be at war. He seems to think if he gives terrorists the rights of Americans, lets them lawyer up and reads them their Miranda rights, we won’t be at war. He seems to think if we bring the mastermind of Sept. 11 to New York, give him a lawyer and trial in civilian court, we won’t be at war.

“He seems to think if he closes Guantanamo and releases the hard-core Al Qaeda-trained terrorists still there, we won’t be at war. He seems to think if he gets rid of the words, ‘war on terror,’ we won’t be at war. But we are at war and when President Obama pretends we aren’t, it makes us less safe. Why doesn’t he want to admit we’re at war? It doesn’t fit with the view of the world he brought with him to the Oval Office. It doesn’t fit with what seems to be the goal of his presidency — social transformation — the restructuring of American society. President Obama’s first object and his highest responsibility must be to defend us against an enemy that knows we are at war."

How much information does our government need to act on a problem? We live in a dynamic world not a static world. Quick response is necessary for our survival.

My, My, MY...isn't this getting curiouser and curiouser.

THE TOP DOG WHO DIDN'T BARK....Leon Panetta, head of CIA whose policies bottled up the 'intel.' from the perp's also opens the door on how a Nigerian 'contacts' the CIA unless he was a spy for them or perhaps even receiving payment to many fathers rat out their kids?

THE SOPHISTICATED DEVICE THAT DIDN'T WORK...extremely powerful explosive and a sep. detonator, both of which went through a security check. This perp. botched it; but will the next, and next, and the next?

"it was Republicans who voted down additional funds for more body scanning and explosive detection devices for airports." minute the moonbats are riding BUSH for larding up the war on terror, the next minute they are piling on the pork--ain't that Defense Appropriations bill a beauty, but wait OBAMA said he'd veto pork, phew!

...If the poster had taken a sec. to read up on why the explosive device escaped detection; they would have learned that the only real detection is done by dogs and they are in extremely short supply.

When BUSH and CHERTOFF ran the anti-terror program, intel was coordinated and passed between agencies; under Obama, it's not and this is the result....CHAOS and weaseling.

Have they no idea that everyone in the world knows their lying through their teeth?

Isolated incident indeed....

Strange that anyone in the Bush administration could criticize Obama about the perp on this flight. Actually, unfortunately for Republicans in my party, we must accept the responsibility that our own President failed to do anything about the 9/11 mess. Bush's decision to go into Iraq was war on the wrong country. Not only did he not kill Bin Laden, he also ended up bankrupting us. Worse yet, Bush's decision to go to war in Iraq rather than in Afghanistan failed to adequately fight in Afghanistan in a timely manner and allowing Bin Laden to escape when he could have been killed or captured. Bush and Cheney took their eyes off the real perp. Now, how strange that my own party badmouths Obama before giving him a chance. Bear in mind that the plane did NOT blow up in this latest incident. Obama did not enhance the facts surrounding the government's response and straightforwardly admitted the U S missed the boat on this problem. Of course, Obama is about as responsible for this guy being on this flight as Bush was for the shoe bomber being on that flight he got onto. But most of all, the Senator who has consistently blocked the nomination of the new Transportation agency leader is the problem. Imagine worrying about politics and trying to stop the Obama agenda being more important than the safety of travelers. Now that Senator is really culpable and he is a disgrace to our Republican party. Imagine Being so small minded that he deprived our country of the safety of a leader who could have been active in stopping this sort of attacks. Republicans need to be far more fundamentally interested in the safety of Americans and avoid this anti-Obama partisanship that endangers American lives. Our party leadership screwed up royally the last 8 years so we have no room to talk.

If the bomber wasn't part of a larger plot, how did he learn to create the explosive, sew it into his underwear and sneak by security. One more small item, where did he learn to be a suicide bomber? Does he have his own brand of Muslim terrorism he learned while in solitude in Yemen's desert?

Maybe it's all common knowledge among terrorists, nothing special.

That's what Obama thought.

the world hates us because america forces it's ideals and fundamentals down the throats of anyone that doesn't agree with us.. how about america invades countries when it wants something it doesn't have it's claws on.. how about america doesn't have any heritage of it's own, so we have no morals to break..

what do you want us to say?

how about.. why do we, the powerhouse country of the world.. start ABIDING by the same rules that we DEMAND the rest of the world to abide to...

are you aware, that WE, the U.S.. was essentially VOTED off of the UN's human rights commission because of bush????? so now.. the ONLY country that has been on the UN HR committee (until the U.S. demanded it be deemed dead), was Russia? does that say anything to you??? it says VOLUMES to me.....

why is it.. the EVERY country in the middle east disavows the legitamcy of israel.. but the u.s. doesn't.. in fact, in EVERY RESOLUTION to sanction has been VETOED by the u.s.... nobody else.

why is that?

why also is that israel received 5 BILLION dollars for weapons every year from the u.s... yet, we DEMAND iran disarm...

why is that????

we don't seem to care about enforcing non proliferation in ANY country except for NK, iran, and pakistan..

why is that?????

the world is LAUGHING at us charles15.. they are LAUGHING at us...

8 years after 9/11... and we still have over 200 "bad guys" held without charges or even representation by lawyers. that is ILLEGAL, IMMORAL, AND DISGUSTING BEHAVIOR OF A COUNTRY.... and yet we admonish china?

give me a friggin break! the u.s. is the BIGGEST HYPOCRITICAL NATION IN THE WORLD!

america; "do as we say.. not as we do..."

THAT is why we have people that want to kill us.

it doesn't surprise me in the least.

This failure here has nothing to our airport screening, our global foreign policy, or Iraq, or Bush, or Muslim, or Jews. It's about how a piece of intelligence, gift-wrapped on a plater and handed to us, was not properly processed to prevent this nutjob from getting on a plane headed for U.S. For the love of God, his own father turned him in!

It is so easy to be critical of security procedures as most comments on here are, but not so easy to come up with workable alternatives. Have not read one.
So come on you critics- lets see how good you are.
For instance do any of you have any idea of why someone would want to blow others and themselves up. Is it hate? if so why? Is it the idea of martyrdom? maybe the same ideas as the old Christian crusaders had? Is it because of the the West's seemingly unconditioanal support for Israel? Is it because Muslim fundamentalists are afraid that Muslims will move away from fundamentalism, as many Christians moved on from fundamental Christianity? Is it because of the West's support for non democratic regimes- like Eygpt or Saudi? Maybe its a combination of reasons; all of which provide fertile breeding ground for the recruitment of the radicalised by terrorist organisations.
I think security services worldwide are doing an excellent job under extremely difficult conditions. That and our own determination to confront the issues and not to allow ourselves from living by a few nutters will eventually lead to the defeat of extremists.

Well, then, let's get busy, and go kill al-Qaeda. Scatter them to the four winds, hunt them all down, and destroy their no-good movement. We'll never get bin Laden, but we can utterly destroy his rotten organization. Bye bye to them all. Neocons, you suck. All's you do is say, "No." You're just like al-Qaeda--sulking and nursing your grievances. But with neocons, it's all about not owning the White House. Well, they had their chance. They wrecked the Country and couldn't get bin Laden, Dr. al-Zawahiri, Mullah Omar, or any of the really top leadership. Neocon's failures to nip this movement in the bud has led us to near-ruin, and allowed the atrocity of 9/11 to become a Global Jihad. Pffft. Mission Accomplished.

This may be premature. There is a lack of sophistication about this attempt that is not characteristic of the traditional efforts of this group. Bin Laden has not come forward to address it. It does not seem to be what it appears and we may need to dig deeper to determine who and what did this and why. It may be al qaeda inspired and influenced but not executed. Second generation trainees of the master.

When President Obama says the attack was an isolated one and Al Qaeda comes out and accepts credit for the attack it makes President Obama look pretty foolish in the same way Napolitano looked foolish in saying the system worked. President Obama is going to have to learn he can't make guarantees about the safety of flying and if the attack was an isolated one or not at this point especially when Al Qaeda accepts responsibility. President Obama said the reason he took three days to respond was because he wanted to get all the facts. It appears he still hasn't gotten all the facts.

This is just more BS and Hoax out of the right-wing (aka war-mongering and fear-mongering) US Media to distract
American peoples focus and attention from what is really Killing the American people by the 10s of 1000s which
is lack of Universal nationalized health care, something that every European country has, Canada has, in fact all
developed nations have except the US. To read one article about 10s of 1000s of Americans that are literally being
killed by American government each year for having put in place a health care system that denies people health care
because they need health care (aka pre-existing condition), a monstrosity that Europeans cannot even believe when
they are told about it, check out:

So the question is how has the US Government been able to get away with such monstrosities as for example the
lack of universal health care in US, set aside the truly criminal pre-existing condition, it is due to the US Media having
played this Hoax on American people, which is to create bogy mans to be scared off such as:
1- Communist are coming, they are going to take over the world, which has been PROVEN to have been a LIE as that it did not happen
2- We have to stop North Vietnam from taking over South since that would mean domino affect, which has been PROVEN to have been a LIE as that it did not happen
3- We have to invade Iraq because Iraq has WMD, which has been PROVEN to have been a LIE as they did not have any
4- War on Terror, Alqeada is going to attack US, which is just another fear-mongering as per above. At least in above
fear-mongering Soviet Union did have an Army to scare American people with, but War on Terror, Alqaeda are just words
as Alqeada has ZERO ships, ZERO planes, ZERO tanks, ZERO ballistic missiles, etc. etc.

As the best proof of how right-wing (99% of) US Media that is how US Media has been lying and lying to American people, well to the World, check out:

The US though has no urgency to end terrorism. Too much money involved.

This is obviously another false flag attack like 911, 7/7, and that stupid shoe bomber. We all know Obama is continuing George Bush's War of Terror because he is owned and paid for by the same people. He campaigned on ending these wars, and instead is moving toward continual war with the entire Middle East. Read the story below of an eye witness who says the supposed terrorist had an accomplice who was able to get him on the plane in Amsterdam without a passport. This shows there is more to this story than a lone terrorist who slipped by security.

A passenger who boarded Northwest Airlines Flight 253 in Amsterdam with attempted plane bomber Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab says the would-be terrorist had no passport and was aided by a sharp-dressed man who claimed Mutallab was a Sudanese refugee, just one of a plethora of startling inconsistencies surrounding an incident that has led to ramped up security and increased levels of harassment in airports.

According to Kurt Haskell, an attorney with the Haskell Law Firm in Taylor, Michigan, “He and his wife were sitting on the ground near their boarding gate in Amsterdam, which is when they saw Mutallab approach the gate with an unidentified man.”

Mutallab was a poorly dressed, young looking individual, but he was accompanied by a man in an expensive suit, Haskell told

“He says the suited man asked ticket agents whether Mutallab could board without a passport. “The guy said, ‘He’s from Sudan and we do this all the time.’”

Although Mutallab is Nigerian, Haskell said the well-dressed man portrayed him as a desperate Sudanese refugee in an attempt to elicit sympathy and as a way of bypassing his lack of documents.

“The ticket agent referred Mutallab and his companion to her manager down the hall, and Haskell didn’t see Mutallab again until after he allegedly tried to detonate an explosive on the plane,” states the report.

Also since this story was on National Public Radiow yesterday. Today Haskell was interviewd by the FBI, but the FBI didn't bring along the survelance tapes from the Amsterdam airport. I wonder what these tapes would show? Will the world ever see them? Why isn't this story being reported by other main stream news? Is this whole incident going to be used to attack Yemen?

President Obama has surrounded himself with incompetent and inept advisers. They were chosen for political purity and dedication to the world communist cause. Obama himself is incompetent and inept, and is completely sold on the Marxist philosophy. Ideology comes before any measure of job knowledge or qualifications. His various departments are headed up by political commissars rather than performance minded individuals. The head of Homeland Security is a great example. Janet Napolitano was picked for Marxist purity rather than job competence. While Jim Jones, John Brennan and Tom Donilon give the outward appearance of job knowledge, it is doubtful that they have any real influence with the President. Obama is much more likely to follow the counsel of a Marxist ideologue than to heed the advice of a realist. He has been spoon fed Marxist and communist doctrine since childhood. That kind of indoctrination is difficult to overcome. The sad truth is that he probably actually believes that communism is better than capitalism. He also probably believes that his social engineering plans take priority over any pretension to the importance of national security. Because of his personal convictions, he is much more likely to view terrorism through the prism of self-serving excuses that Muslim radicals use to blame the United States for every ill in the world. Mr. President, it is time for you to wake up and smell the truth. Otherwise, 2012 will be bye bye to you and your communist friends.

Q - Do you think Ms Napolitano will get the ax?

Unless Abdul was one h**** of a seamstress, he was obviously part of a larger plot. Just FYI.

Do we use "harsh" treatments to get more information out of this terrorist, hoping that it leads to preventing another attack and thus saving lives, or do we do the liberal thing and give him American rights?

See what happens moderate voters when you put a radical into the White House? Once a radical, always a radical!!

If this were a mess (and notice I'm using the subjunctive here, because I don't believe it was), as one of the commenters has claimed, then why hasn't Obama done something about it before now? When are you liberals going to stop blaming George Bush. Obama has been in office almost a year; that's one fourth of his only term. Maybe he didn't know enough to "fix this mess." Maybe that's because it wasn't a mess. Maybe it's a program that needs to be updated monthly. Maybe, just maybe, one of these days, Obama will admit that he's way over his head here.

The worst part of this fiasco is that the terrorist isn't being treated as a terrorist, but as a criminal. Lawyered up, there will be no interrogation of any substance; no hard intelligence will be obtained about his handlers, methods, etc. This is what we have become; an apologist's dream; it's all our fault that people want to blow us up. Please, someone, anyone start impeachment proceedings.

Posted by: apberusdisvet | December 29, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

"....some linkage with Al-Quada...."; no kidding; the President and his advisors actually figured that do you imagine is going on with the terrorists? Amazing, they are plotting and trying to carry out attacks against our citizens! And, they are using airplanes! How novel! Maybe, just maybe, the administration will finally begin to wake up and face reality. It's a War on Terror! They declared war (jihad) against us some time ago. Did this administration not receive the message?

Looks like Obama's appointees are as incompetent as Obama is. Who would have thought?

The father of terror suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab met on Nov. 19 with the Central Intelligence Agency at the U.S. embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, and told of his son's likely radicalization, according to U.S. officials. That led to a broader meeting the next day in which the information was shared with representatives of the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the State Department, a U.S. official said.

The news Ann Kornblut doesn't want you to read.

You know, with you geniuses, why do we even need intelligence organizations? You'll tell us from your extensive knowledge who all the terrorists are, when and where they're planning attacks, and we'll all be safe forever!
What a bunch of catastrophic, Monday-morning quarterback morons you people are.
Where was Bush when New York was attacked? Reading a story to school kids. He didn't even bother to stop when he found out. Then, after successfully beginning, I repeat, beginning to remove Afghanistan as a haven for jihadists, he and Mr. Cheney dropped the ball and started an absolutely unnecessary war in Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with Al Qaeda or 9/11. More brave Americans dead than were killed in the Twin Towers, all in vain. For nothing, except Bush's ego and Cheney's megalomania.
So who's your hero, you ignorant fools? Who should be in charge? McCain? Palin?
I've got news for you: it was Republicans who voted down additional funds for more body scanning and explosive detection devices for airports. That's right, your heroes, not so interested in keeping us safe as you think.
Unless you have some facts to contribute to the discussion, STFU, you're just useless complainers. Anyone can make up a name to call a politician they don't like, but it takes actual brains to suggest a better alternative.

This is scary. Obama and his administration are "increasingly confident that al-Qaeda was involved." I give up. Who hit them over the head to wake them up? This honestly isn't funny anymore. And this is the administration that makes fun of George Bush and Dick Cheney? Are you kidding me? This is worse than the worst screwball comedy of the 1930's It's slapstick - except we're all going to die from their total incompetence!

Its humorous that the libs are blaming Bush for Obama's administrations ineptness, hey morons the guys dad told the Obama embassy officials in NOVEMBER of THIS year. Freaking retards.

Who's human and systemic failures President Obama ? George Bushes ? You are a failure (human) and your administration is a failure (system -atic). I see a lot of paid speech making gigs in the year 2013 for you at a few sickening liberal universities. You can tell everyone for the 1000th time that George Bush left such a mess.......blah...blah...blah.

Posted by: nobama2012 | December 29, 2009 8:12 PM | Report abuse

How frightening is this? The President is just now coming to this conclusion. Why is it necessary to be so gentle with these terrorists?
Bush was scorned for his two hour "pause" before addressing the attack on 9/11 and yet Obama waits two days before issuing a statement, and then calls this terrorist an alledged suspect.
There is a serious lapse in common sense.

Posted by: bill80 | December 29, 2009 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Remember how big a deal the left made of George Bush's six minute delay upon hearing of the 9/11 attacks. Barack Obama waits four days to respond and the left is totally silent.

What bothers me most is Janet Napolitano retains his complete confidence. If she retains his confidence, he should lose the confidence of the American people.

Fun to see all the right wing wing-nuts who defended the Bush administration incompetents for 9-11 out in force against Obama. Who do you think was on the job when this guy should have been watched? B-U-S-H! Still trying to blame the current administration for the right wing failures.

i am in recollection of pre-9/11 when, it seems, the only people capable of reacting to the imminent threat were the hard working F.B.I. people on the ground who KNEW something was up.
As the information passed up the chain of command, NOTHING happened. Nothing in the F.B.I. because, as it turns out, they don't have computers that can connect with one another, and when it finally DID filter up to the higher-up people, they didn't want to hear about it.
The CIA knew enough about it to put it into the President's daily report of "what was going on", but, he decided it was simply as case of the CIA "covering their butts" and did nothing whatsoever about the information. These are well known facts at this point.
So, does the FBI have computers that can connect with one another yet? NOPE. Funny, isn't it. One would think that this MIGHT be a priority. But, NOOOOO.
Are the "systems" that Congress and all the commissions recommended be put in place in place? NOOOOOO.
Are we, as a nation, so mired in domestic political fights that we CAN NOT provide for our own security? YESSSSSS.
I fear that it will take some HUGE domestic, on our own ground, catastrophe before the American people unite in the effort to MAKE our elected officials provide for OUR safety instead of their OWN political safety.
This applies to both political parties. Neither a dead Democrat or a dead Republican can vote.

Wow I'm amazed at how perceptive the Lyin Hawaiian is. So it took Barry the Bungler four days to learn what every intelligent person in America already knew, what a d!ck.
I'm very confident that the Government will do a much better job running an easy thing like the American Health Care System than they did Airline Security. Yea right.
B.O.= Incompetent B00B.

Well!! Scolly WOlly!! Did it take Obama this long to figure this out?? What is his administration doing other than wasting tax payer dollars, and trying to 'charade' himself as a leader!!!!????

He needs to fire his Sec Janet Incompetino! Just hope America sees the disaster he is and let's him join the unemployment lines in Jan 2013!

Well, Odumbo, now that you've stopped effective military interrogations, plan to prosecute our own patriots, and shutting down Gitmo, are you going to change your mind?

Nah. He's too busy having liberal White sycophants kissing his behind.

Wow! the President had NEW information...which everyone else on the planet had been aware of for days. Wow again! this was not an "isolated" extremist." I feel so much better knowing that our President is so on top of this.
