Obama begins receiving assessments of intelligence failures

By Anne E. Kornblut
HONOLULU - President Obama said on Thursday that he has begun receiving preliminary assessments about the intelligence failures leading up to the attempted airline attack on Christmas Day. But he made clear that much of the review process had yet to occur.

"I anticipate receiving assessments from several agencies this evening and will review those tonight and over the course of the weekend," Obama said in a statement issued by the White House.

On Thursday morning, the president and his family were at an Oahu movie theater seeing "Avatar" - the 3D version, in a special screening closed to the public and arranged just for them, in what was his latest attempt to maximize recreational time on a trip that has been repeatedly interrupted with crises.

Obama said he had spoken to his top counter-terrorism adviser, John Brennan, and Homeland Security Director Janet Napolitano earlier in the day. He plans to meet with the agency heads that oversee intelligence, national security and air travel next Tuesday, once he is back in Washington.

This president thinks hard about what he's doing, bases his actions on reliable intelligence, learns from the past and plans for the future. It's ridiculous to attempt to undermine his entire administration on the basis of this one security breach represented by the jockstrap jihadist.

One will not hear Obama blithely proclaiming "Mission accomplished" or "Bring It On!" Without such simple-minded bombast, he will go about plugging security leaks in a much more efficient manner than anyone dealt with the New Orleans levees prior to Hurricane Katrina.

Our military presence in Muslim countries, meanwhile, guarantees that our security will continue to tested by terrorists.

And the west continues importing this genocidal vermin! The article just highlights what the Egyptian government stated some time ago; if muslims are allowed western style freedoms, they will exploit that freedom for radicalization and jihad. Flying in and/or importing this mass murdering scum is pure suicide for what is left of Western civilization.

The only thing lower than this muslim filth are the PC imbeciles who justify or excuse these terrorist attacks. The existence of stupid republicans in the US or the crusades does not justify terrorism, you PC retards.

Obama waits three days to address the blotch terrorist attack but speeds through city and residential streets for a friend’s scraped knee. If Bush did that the liberal bias news media would have crucified and ridiculed him. Obama has already played more golf in one year than Bush did in eight years. The news media are not journalists. They are his mouthpieces and cheerleaders.

America and other countries should learn from the Israelis on how to screen airline passengers before it's too late and more people are killed.
1. Israel has plain clothes security walking inside their airports looking for suspicious behavior.
2. Israel security interviews everyone traveling to their country.
3. Their security works closely with and shares information with airlines and the airlines ticket counter employees.
4. They profile airline passengers and single some out for further screening.
5. Israel doesn’t use full body scanners. They use common sense. We use political correctness.
6. Isaac Yeffet, retired head of Israel airline El-Al said full body scanners conflicts with Islamic religious beliefs and privacy concerns.. That is why Israel does not use them.
7. Israel airline El-Al has not had a terrorist incident in 30 years.

omaarsblade _ figure you for a public employee - fat, lazy, under worked, over paid, and completely clueless. Just about everyone else either has had their job outsourced by this ratbag traitor of a President or they live under the constant threat of that. The Democrat's, and please go look it up, are on track to break every outsourcing record Bush ever set. They are the greatest threat to the security of ordinary American's in this nation's history. We either completely and ruthlessly destroy the Democratic Party, defeat it's leaders, cripple Obama's ability to wreck more harm, or we will simply not be able to survive. Sure, the Republican's are bad. The Democrat's KNEW BETTER, though. The RAN on a platform of ending outsourcing, ending the H1-B and L-1 visas. THEY LIED. So, all we can do is punish them, utterly and ruthlessly wreck that party. Both they and the Republican's will get the message.

This President and this Congress are the biggest bunch of liars the citizens of this country has EVER encountered. They were going to put a stop to job outsourcing -- more than 4 million jobs have been outsourced on their watch, in less than 11 months! They were going to end or curb the H1-B and L-1 visas. In one of his first acts in office, Obama granted more than 50,000 "emergency" H1-B visas to the six largest Wall Street banks so they could fire their entire U.S. IT staffs. He is on track to issue, in one disastrous, awful year, more guest worker visas than Bush did in his final four years! Everything these crooks do, from Wall Street and corporate bailouts to the new healthcare legislation is a gigantic corporate giveaway. The Democratic swine are the enemies of every American worker and they need to be absolutely crushed in 2010. In the meanwhile, if your trust these monsters with ANYTHING, you need your head examined.

_____________

A request for "an increase in troops sat on desks in this White House (during the presidency of George W. Bush), including the Vice president's, for more than 8 months, a resource request filled by President Obama in March."

_____________

Big Note: The public doesn't have access to McKiernan's formal request for more troops.

But we know that he was talking about it publicly in September 2008, at least 4 1/2 months before the end of Bush's term.

And McKiernan told reporters his request went back nearly to the start of his taking over as the top U.S. commander four months before that.

That would suggest Gibbs' claim is correct that it had been sitting on desks in the White House for eight months. And so we rule his statement True.

Airport Security? What's that? Just as I read through these articles; over my shoulder I am watching the local Dallas/Fort Worth 6 PM News on Channel 5 -- and wallah, they just reported that one of the gates at D/FW Airport today went unmanned for 90 minutes today. Anyone, with anything, could have walked right through. Someone finally observed the situation and called TSA; they checked by running the security camera tapes and sure enough there had been not a soul there for an hour and one-half. They are going to investigate who dropped the ball; sure makes one feel secure to know they are going to make sure it doesn't happen again; or should I say, too often.

ahengst _ You need to stop reading the American press! Over in Europe you get the actual facts. The "terrorist" didn't have a passport! A well dressed man, with U.S. government credentials, got him on the plane! Likewise, the "explosives" were nothing more than the powder from inside some fireworks. Couple that with the fact that this guy was mentally ill AND slow and you have to pretty stupid to not believe that you government, likely the Obama White House, *created* this situation to draw attention away from their continuous disasters. If this "terrorist attack" was a box of cereal, all of the ingredients would be artificial.

These comments are hard to take and not particularly civil, to boot.

First the Dutch blew it, maybe Christmas is the day the better people take vacation. The Europeans are big about that. They failed to apply the Mark I eyeball. Apparently we did as well. Time may tell.

Flying international, one way, without luggage is no longer an alert? Puhlease.

I could not fly from National to LaGuardia some years ago without an external body search and questioning. The Dutch, who can be pretty thorough, even anal retentive, if they want to be, blew it, just on the basics of international air travel.

Hard to believe, but my guess is that the French are still on top of things, given my own experience with they way they treated USA inbound and outbound passengers in 2008.

We can make our own lives very miserable by overreacting. Let's take a look at the system and processes that we have have and give them a chance.

Oh, by the way, I was born, raised and educated in the Netherlands.

On 9/11, we came together as a nation and trusted the president to lead us. We trusted that the office of the white house would strive to use our best intelligence to reach measured and effective decisions. But it didn't take long for that trust to become skepticism, as we realized decisions were being made by political paper-pushing hacks (Rumsfeld and Cheney), who disregarded intelligence, sought out only those opinions they agreed with, and made most of their decisions based on whether or not it would score political points for Republicans. We also had no idea that president Bush was too weak and-or ignorant to question his "advisors" and instead simply rubber-stamped what these two idiots gave him.

And look at Republicans now... Thank God no one was hurt or killed in this latest incident. If that had happened, the Republicans would waste no time in exploiting it to even more preposterous extremes to further their own power.

President Obama wasted no time to admit the agencies he oversees made some critical mistakes. And these mistakes ...allowed a single crazy extremist to try lighting some chemicals hidden in his pants.

One point that seems lost today is how these terrorists aren't nearly as formidable or organized now as they were on 9/11.

And shame on all the Republican politicians who fan the flames of ignorance among some of the commenting folks here. Our government is doing an excellent job of collecting intelligence. They still have institutional issues sharing it, but at no point is anyone - from analyst to the commander in chief - taking their eye off the ball here. We all want to protect our country, and anyone who accuses the opposite is only doing so out of ignorance or intent. Bush made mistakes. Obama has made mistakes.

But at least Obama is focused on finding long term solutions to these issues, rather than scoring short term political points.

Definition For The Dumb, Like You:

It consists of cutting the connections to and from the prefrontal cortex, the anterior part of the frontal lobes of the brain. Whilst the procedure, initially termed a leucotomy, has been controversial since its inception in 1935, it was for more than two decades a mainstream medical procedure employed to relieve the symptoms of psychiatric and, occasionally, other conditions.

This was so despite the acceptance in the psychiatric, neurological and wider medical culture that the procedure often produced serious side-effects.

Not much reported in this newspaper, or Anne's screed, is the fact that this guy got on that airplane with a passport and, then, only when a "well dressed Western man" talked authorities into letting him on! Moreover, the "powerful explosive" was the powder gotten from cutting open some common fireworks. This whole incident stinks to high heaven. Given that our government routinely lies to us about job outsourcing, guest workers, the actual number of unemployed people, "healthcare reform", everything and anything, you would need to be pretty stupid to not suspect that this "terrorist attack" was simply this government's way of changing the subject from public attention to their corruption, incompetence, the utter disaster the Democrat's have wrought upon this country. We should target all Muslims for extra security at airports and other transit hubs. Will innocent muslims pay the price in extra time traveling, certainly, but they are safer along with everyone else on a plane. It seems inconceivable to me the MI5 file data on the suspect was not in our database. Bush & Cheney "Dithered for 8 Months and Never Filled Request for 22,000 Additional Troops to Afghanistan, from Bush-Cheney's "On The Ground General" General McKiernan...

President Obama Filled that Request, Not Bush Nor Cheney, Now Go Tell that Semi-Senile Ole Man, to Shut Up, Permanently !!

It is imperative that Obama take disciplinary action against any top administrative official found to be accountable for the miserably failure of our U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies. At the end, we the American taxpayers are the one who suffer. Eight years ago, a terrorist carrying explosives in his shoes was stopped and arrested before carrying out his horrible intended terrorist act. Subsequently, ever since, the FAA and later TSA implemented a permanent policy of having any and all passengers boarding a domestic or international commercial airline, remove their shoes and have them be examined and inspected by X-screening machines.

Since this time the explosives were found in the terrorist underwear, I assume that soon any and all passengers would have to remove their underwear, or better yet not wear them but sign a form under oath declaring that he or she is not wearing underwears. The failure of our own U.S. government to protect us from the act of terrorism on December 25, 2009 cannot be counted as a positive one. Our U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies have received an "F" grade. Now, it is up to president Barack Obama to carry on on his promise of holding anyone found accountable for the failure to stop the suicide bomb body carrier international terrorist who thanks to some unknown heroes, aircraft flight attendants and passengers who took immediate action and restrained the suspected terrorist and helped avoid the loss of almost 300 lives in our American soil. If Obama fails to take any action, it may cost him his chances of winning a second term.

CBS NEWS Implicates The CIA: Yemini-based Al Qaeda group has claimed responsibility for the attack, praising Abudulmutallab's attempt to blow up Flight 253 with about 3 ounces of the powerful explosive PETN stashed inside a pair of specially-made underwear, reports CBS News chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian.

For many the global security breach represents the kind of system failure detailed in the 9/11 Commission Report.

"We're sharing information better than we did prior to 9/11, but this incident surely illustrates we've got a long ways to go," Hamilton said.

NOTE: IN A STATEMENT,THE CIA DID NOT DISPUTE CBS NEW'S REPORT.

"We learned of him in November, when his father came to the U.S. embassy in Nigeria and sought help in finding him. We did not have his name before then," said Paul Gimigliano, a CIA spokesman. "Also in November, we worked with the embassy to ensure he was in the government's terrorist database - including mention of his possible extremist connections in Yemen. We also forwarded key biographical information about him to the National Counterterrorism Center. This agency, like others in our government, is reviewing all data to which it had access - not just what we ourselves may have collected

The bellowing by Republicans over the Obama administration's supposedly lackadaisical response to the attempted bombing of an airliner over Detroit seems as much about political posturing as legitimate national security concerns.
____________

Note: How else to explain the GOP's relatively quiet reaction eight years ago to President George W. Bush's detached response after a similarly-botched terrorist attack?

On December 22, 2001, Richard Reid -- known more infamously as the shoe bomber -- failed in his attempt to blow up a Miami-bound jet using explosives hidden in his shoe.

Coming less than 4 Months after September 11, there already were deep concerns about a potential attack during the upcoming holiday break.

One must reluctantly admire your blind allegiance to the president and his policies. But blind allegiance usually ends up as wasted loyalty. As is always the case, your "facts" are nothing more than half-truths and/or non-existent altogether. Check the archieves and you'll find that, post 9/11, no serious terrorist attackjs took place against us. Now, take off your shoes and socks and count the attacks/attempts since your guy took over. Safer? You're delusional. Our enemies have already identfied Obama as a p-ssy...witness Iran, N. Korea and Yemen just to mention the obvious ones. And with Holder and his ACLU masters and the rest of your surrender monkeys doing their level best to make defense almost impossible, you'll end up wishing that "cowboy" you hate was still in the saddle - mistakes and missteps included.

PS- The only thing gained from reading Obama's books is the knowledge that he, like his wife, his pastor, and most of his Chicago friends, believes our country is evil and in need of massive redistribution of wealth and influence...and he's well on his way to achieving his goal.

Happy New Year! Maybe Obamacare will have in it a provision for you to get the rabies shots you so obviously need. I'll probably have to pay for them.

“The system worked!” I might accept any other ersatz excuse, but not this one. It reeks of incompetence! No Agency Head(?)ever seems able and/or competent enough, to prevent a problem they are charged with watching out for, before it occurs. Or, for that matter, to deal with it after it does occur! Rather, they seem always to be scrambling to find excuses and/or someone to blame for their incompetence, "after the fact". This is particularly prevalent among Agency Heads, congress-people, senators, etc. Incompetence is apparently a traditional requisite for employment in DC politics. I would submit that the reason being that any one of competence would pose too great a contrast against other members of the existing "Ex-post-facto" Gang.
These Washington incompetents seem to be all "calm sea sailors". When rough seas require a strong hand at the helm, they dive under their bunks!
Further, I would ask the Administration to change the "Agency Head" title, which implies capabilities far in excess of what can be expected from those so titled, to "Agency Manager”. A Title of lesser import, but more compatible with the non-existent capabilities and performance of those now Titled: “Agency Head”!

It would be nice if Ms. Kornblut noted a couple of things--first, on July 14, 2009, Napolitano asked fpr a review (to be completed within 60 days) of security procedures. What was the outcome of that? Secondly, Barack Obama campaigned on making sure the terrorist watch lists were effective. He took office almost a year ago, and apparently nothing had been done. Ms. Kornblut, why isn;t that in the coverage?

I have no issue with Ms. Kornblut's characterization here. If anything, it shows a little naivete about the degree to which any senior executive can go on "vacation" and assume everything is going to run hunkey dorey. Having been one, the minimum that one does is check email, talk to whoever you left in charge, and take decision briefings when there is no option to delay the decision.

The President has been public about the "bubble" he lives in, and at the same time bemoaned the loss of his "regular life." Tough cookies, bub. You are the leader of the mightiest, most prosperous and most powerful nation on earth, and the country is fighting two discrete wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and a generalized global war on terrorism.

You're lucky you got a few hours to see Avatar. Man up. And WaPo, you need not make excuses or try to elicit sympathy.

"...in what was his latest attempt to maximize recreational time on a trip that has been repeatedly interrupted with crises..."

Interesting that we were never bombarded with sly and leading wordings like this during the Bush years, when the president was on vacation a greater percentage of time than any modern president.

It sounds like the paper that misled and cheered us into the Iraq war is pounding that Republican meme, that the president doesn't care, doesn't realize we're "at war", etc.

Kornblut's conservative/AIPAC McLean roots are showing through again.
