Obama blames 'human and systemic failures' in Detroit incident

Updated 4:47 p.m.
By Anne E. Kornblut
HONOLULU -- President Obama on Tuesday cited a "mix of human and systemic failures" in allowing Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to fly into the United States, where he allegedly attempted to detonate an explosive device aboard an airliner above Detroit.

"Bits of information available within the intelligence community ... could have and should have been pieced together" about Abdulmutallab, Obama said. "Had this critical information been shared ... the suspect would never have been allowed to board that plane for America."

The president also ordered a preliminary review of airline security measures to be delivered to him by Thursday.

If TSA was so important a post, why did it take Obama 280 days to nominate someone? I think he golfed 56 times during the time there was no nominee for TSA. Harry Reid only had to go through 3 days of procedure, and he NEVER started it.

The nominee won't answer questions. He should not be confirmed.

Find someone who will answer the questions of senators. We have seen what happens when you have politicians like Napolitano in a job they are unqualified for, and the damage they can do.

Remember, the US authorities had the list of airline passengers 2 hours before take off from Amsterdam. You can't blame Bush, Holland, and underwear -- the buck stops at the bosses.

ObamaBots have a straw-man argument from their messiah, they're blaming Republicans because the TSA doesn't have a director.

Yeah, right! The TSA can't function because it doesn't have a political appointee.

TSA employees must be all hiding under their desks, praying and shouting out windows, "What should we do? We don't have Obama's political appointee to tell us WHAT TO DO!!!"

Boy, OH-BOY! I sure as beans hope Obama's crony is appointed soon, so we aren't all doomed!

Remember to think, it's the ReThug DeMint's fault, 'cause Obama's crony hasn't been appointed.

Yep, yep, yep. Love those lame straw-man excuses. Sucked up by idiot followers every time. Have the idiot ObamaBots carry the water, that's all they can do...never think for themselves.

Posted by: TheBabeNemo | December 29, 2009 6:09 PM | Report abuse

Okay it is time to get a few things straight. The two people released from Guantanamo Bay were released in 2007, two (2) years BEFORE President Obama became President. Done by the Bush administration. Give credit where credit is due.

The Director of the TSA who has already received bipartisanship support is currently being held up by South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint. He is holding up the nomination, playing politics because he doesn't like unions. Republicans have also voted against funding for several homeland security projects. Face it, Republicans in Congress are playing politics with terrorism and the the American people because they want President Obama to fail.

I believe the goal for the President is to prevent terrorist from striking the United States. I never knew that preventing an attack regardless of how it was done would be vilified. This was a FAILED attempt. No one got killed, no planes crashed, no property was damaged. Isn't that the point? Some of you people act like President Obama and his administration did something wrong because an attack was prevented. It seems that some people are upset because a disaster DIDN't happen. That is really sick but par for the course.

As far as accountability, who was held accountable for 9/11? Any attempt to even investigate what really happened on 9/11 and hold someone accountable brings Republicans out in droves screaming and whining about how unfair Democrats are trying to hold someone accountable for 9/11. Bush and Cheney won't even talk about it on record or under oath. Until you people are able to answer to tha , whining, bi!ching and moaning about this failed terrorist attack and accountability rings petty and partisan.

Obama is an ignorant person.

First, he weakens national security, and goes on apology tours trying to make friends with serial killer dictators.

Now, he says there's a systemic failure in our national security system.

Go figure, Obama. You should look in the mirror if you want to find the systemic failure.

It would appear that most of them need to first of all get at least a 3rd grade education before they write anything here. Where do these ignorant people come from? Is this the kind of idiots the American educational system turns out? If this is the case, I can only say how sad and dissapointed I am. Where do these people come from, and why are they so vitriolic, is it because President Obama is so much more inteligent than bubba Bush? Such sad little people!

Duh. No kidding. Systematic failure. The question is why? The answer is the failure to read Bin Laden's 2002 "Letter to America" in which he articulated seven demands the US must meet in order to bring an end to terrorism. Unless and until Americans read OBL's letter, we will fail to grasp the enormity of the threat. This guy was no isolated wannabe. He came very close to blowing up a wide body jet over Detroit and killing 270 on the plane and who knows how many more on the ground. The next attack is imminent.

So sad, an entire nation goes into a knee-jerk reaction tizzy, because one loner with a stand alone complex decided that it was his time to "show the world". Americans need to stop acting like a bunch of scared sheep everytime a "terrorist" act is attempted. Random acts of violence happen everyday, and for people to think that they can be kept safe from all harm need to remember that there are over 6 billion people in the world and no matter how much security any given country puts in place, there will always be the one random person that just "goes crazy".
What is lost in all the chatter of "what should we do next?" and "how did our policies fail?" is that it was the act of fellow human beings helping other fellow human beings stopping the lunatic fringe from accomplishing its goal. That is where the focus needs to be on. It is within communities and families is how these people are identified. And it is within these zones of influence where hearts and minds are truly transformed. We could spend billions on more airport security or we could spend that money on humanitarian efforts in these areas such as Yemen, where helping people improve their lives and education will do more harm to terrorist recruiting than any bomb dropped on their houses.

I can't believe so many of you knuckle draggers really believe racial profiling is the answer. Then what is your answer for persons like Tim McVeigh, Eric Rudolf, and Ted Kaczynski do you think we should start profiling random white males as well? What about the two white males in Columbine, also affluent kids who went off the deep end. What about all the terrorist acts the IRA did? Serial murderers can be of any color or religion it is up to us to put on the labels of "terrorist".

However, the ultimate irony in all this is that the right wing is now calling for more "government oversight", hahaha. The very same group asking for less government control but are more than ready to take their trousers down for a government official to do a "freedom search".

Obama miraculously managed to announce on Christmas Eve (the holiday version of his patented Friday News Dump) that he was lifting bailout caps on Fannie and Freddie Mac entirely -- ensuring another housing bubble. Yet actual attacks on this country take days for any recognition to percolate up to the high office. The reason is becoming increasingly obvious: this Administration is focused on its social engineering objectives, and views any actual worldwide events as mere distractions that fall outside its preferred narrative.

http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-the-secret-justification-for-lifting-the-bailout-caps-on-fannie-and-freddie-2009-12

Honest to god, what is there even to report about with this bomber? If someone's OWN FATHER calls your embassy and expresses concerns about his terrorist son, you should probably not let that person on a plane (and, frankly, shoot them in the face). This is not rocket science -- although the way Obama is going I wouldn't be surprised to see a suicide bomber astronaut included out of respect for "diversity."

To all the blind fools who believe in the "War on Terror": I will put it in simple terms
Osama bin Laden is a Saudi prince. What other American family has the strongest ties with the Saudi royal family and can exert the most pressure? The Bush family. Why? Oil.

The CIA has been involved in Afghanistan since the 70's and even trained OBL. Who was head of the CIA at that time? Bush 41 was head of the CIA from '76-77 during the time we supported the Afghan insurgence against the Russians and a year befor OBL joined one of the militias. Throughout the 80's Bush 41 was vice-president and the CIA was run by Bush 41 understudies. The CIA taught OBL everything they know about escape and evasion and guerrilla fighting. And now you mean to tell me that the entire intel force of the CIA cannot capture or kill this guy after over 15 years. This is either willful negligence or epic ineptness.

It is my conjecture that there are members in the CIA who are wilfully keeping this war on terror going on. It may or may not lead up to the Bush family but their are connections. I know this may come to a shock to many Americans but their are members in our military and defense agencies and government who are not the most scrupulous of persons. Why was the CIA not given the green light when they had OBL in their sights back in '01 or any other time they were close?
Isn't funny how we do know that much of Al Qaida and some other terrorist groups are supported by the drug trade in particular the poppy trade but yet we don't go in and destroy their crops like we did in Columbia and Bolivia against the FARC and drug lords there, perhaps since the South Americans weren't giving a cut to the CIA? Example: Bush 41 decides to invade Panama cause Noreiga decided not to play with us anymore. Manuel Noreiega, known drug trafficker, and money launderer long before he was ever a dictator we once backed.

REVIEWING THE HUMAN SITUATION

The "System" didn't work nearly as well as it should have, but the passengers and crew on the plane did. It is, however, time to realize that the "System" is the people who work within it. In far too many ways we have become a complacent, lazy and obviously not always attentive to detail people. People let the wannabe bomber on the plane, not any “System.” Fortunately without any loss of life or injury, we have received a reminder that the full of hot air gun toting PR balloons floated by Bush/Cheney was nothing but smoke & mirrors, NOT Homeland Security. So don’t be fooled by sound bites. We’re not super human. However, we are "We the People" and those on the Christmas flight revealed the best in us, while the people in charge of reviewing and circulating the data for our Homeland Security did not. It's not always the people at the top who should bear the responsibility for what happens. Maybe it's too many "cooks in the kitchen" or maybe agencies are still competing with each other rather than with our real enemies. Either way, at a time of Holiday celebration, when Americans stepped up to the plate and saved the day, all the Media & Republicans can talk about is why isn't the President talking as much as they are. Maybe instead of “talking the talk” about the “war on terrorism” and calling himself a “doer,” he actually is busy doing something about waging it effectively and intelligently. Frankly, I find it reassuring to have a thinking President, who before reacting, actually seeks information, rather than shooting from the hip cowboy style, for the best sound bite effect. If the attempted terrorist Christmas attack had been successful, I certainly would have appreciated seeing the face of my President on television with clear and reassuring words of wisdom. However, as the bomb attempt failed, I'd rather think of him pursuing necessary knowledge regarding the specific source, as in starting point, from which such a young man was motivated to destroy innocent people. When the President has all the facts, whether he tells them to me or not, I trust his response will be worthy of a Statesman elected to "preserve, protect and defend," unlike Reagan's castration of government responsibility to its citizens or the self-serving oil crusades of Bush & Cheney or Congressional GOPs.

Let's all stop a moment and reflect on what is most important to this country:

Is the little billionaire boy with the boo-boo on his chin going to be okay??

Is it obviously very, very important to the Obama Administration - heck, they totally lost their cool, speeding out of the golf course, going over 100 mph to get the emergency band aid to the vital golfing buddies offspring.

I mean, really, how could a terrorist attack be more important???

Obama is on vacation. The guy needs a rest. Stop trying to bother him with such matters.
God help us if we had another 9/11. Who knows how long it would take for the White House to react.

Obama is a Marxist, you don't really think he cares, do you? (sucker)

Joyce16, you wrote "Two of the people that the failed bomb terrorist planned this bombing with, were in Guantanamo, and had been released. Thank you Obama for realeasing some of the prisoners of war...."

You need to check your facts, hon. Those 2 released Gitmo prisoners were released *in 2007*. Guess who was President in 2007? Hint: It didn't start with an "O".

Which of the big-name, esteemed contractors have been doing studies, hardware R*D, and ops support for DHS regarding the watch lists, airport technology, and info sharing? And which have claimed major success for their work. If their client, DHS, is not successful, are they?

Systemic: in that State didn't yank his "Multi-entry" visa when his father told them his son had been radicalized AND the Britsh Embassy had denied it's visa because of irregularities there ... the Nigerian US Embassy wanker needs to be recalled, and Madam Hillary needs to be pilloried about their weak-knees/slackness.

Or Janet Napolitano: 'The system worked' one day, and "we failed the next day" who doesn't seem to understand how this information system works/or is interconnected in this war! Or how about denying any Aircraft that comes from the Netherlands to land in the US (Netherlands does not allow Air Marshall's on ANY aircraft - they deem it too dangerous and intrusive).

Or the President not realizing that this was NOT a lone radicalized person, but a 'Chinese Water Torture' drip effect of a larger, very fragmented, individualized, spread out Al Queda attach on Western culture/Civilization.

They all need to find other profitable work - elsewhere ... before 235 or more Americans come down in a terrorist attack.

The President stood did the right thing. As always, he treats the voters like adults. Perhaps some of the respondents commenting here find that confusing. Its certainly a change from the previous administration.

Napolitano's assignment:

'The president also ordered a preliminary review of airline security measures, returning veteran's, anybody associated with Tea Party's or conservative groups to be delivered to him by Thursday.'

That is who Janet said is America's biggest security threat...

Hey MNightShamalamadindong.....look who is on the computer...blaming Bush again, and defending the leader who goes around bad mouthing this country to evil leader of evil countries who want us dead.

When does your night in shining armour take the blame. He has been in office for the past year, and he is the one who appointed, Janet Napolitano, the head of Homeland Security. I know, that's Bush's fault also....right?

Being a Independent, I could care less about parties, but I do care about how our leader runs this country, and your man has dropped below 50% in the Rasmessen polls, and now her heiness, Michelle, is dropping also. Wait till the elections come next November.

A lone man on an airliner makes a badly botched attempt to ignite what appears to be some kind of hastily cobbled-together device that might or might not have caused some kind of unspecified but apparently non-crippling damage to the plane. The plane lands safely; no one is killed.

Here is another story in the news: in an isolated rural province in Afghanistan, 10 people were killed in a raid by American-led forces. The Afghan government, installed and sustained in power by the United States, said the victims were all civilians -- including eight schoolboys

As with most things government, security is not working because it's too big. Everyone's sitting around thinking, "Not my job". We need less, not more and we need to hold the ones left accountable.

well, we could start with the 3 to 5 watch lists we have. and why so many people are on them but the people that count, aren't.

Yet another "Erkle Moment"...

Posted by: seawolfR | December 29, 2009 5:05 PM | Report abuse

Obama should give a pink slip to ALL the Bush Boyz in the TSA!
Republicans are blocking Obama's nominee for TSA Director because they're afraid he would unionize the TSA. This silliness prevents Obama from appointing his own TSA Director and generates confusion about the Republicans' stated "concerns" over national security.
iow - Republicans are more afraid of unions than terrorists.

Glad we got that out of the way!

This is called leadership, folks. Bush failed horribly in this dept. He isn't candy-coating anything or spouting ridiculous "tough talk." If there is blame, he will apply accordingly. You Obama haters need a different hobby, you sound like babies who need their dumbed-down Texas-sized bottle. Waaahhh. You lost, get over it. The guy's a pro - you on the other hand, are just someone who was taught to use a computer and string together hateful words.

Obama comes out with \"audio\"!

He can't show his face, because his Administration totally missed the ball on this terrorist attack. At least today we heard some truth!

Now it's time for heads to roll including Holder, Napolitano, and Clinton!!

Posted by: jjcrocket2 | December 29, 2009 4:58 PM | Report abuse

Let's start a little closer to the top when it comes to who is to blame. Two of the people that the failed bomb terrorist planned this bombing with, were in Guantanamo, and had been released. Thank you Obama for realeasing some of the prisoners of war.....now they are planning their next event. Maybe the next event will happen when the trial starts for the 2 prisoners brought to America to be tried.

This country is so unsafe with Obama and his appointed adminstration, at the helm. When are people going to open their eyes and wake up? Obama always say's the words that people want to hear, and never the action that the people want to see. This is pathetic what is happening to this country.

Posted by: Joyce16 | December 29, 2009 4:57 PM | Report abuse

I guess this act of terrorism wasn't worth Obama getting all wee weed up over. If it is systemic we need a new system to protect us and if it was a people error we need a new head of Homeland Security - like Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Napolitano has to go.

I don't know about the rest of you but I feel much safer now that the President has figured out what happened. I knew he would get to the bottom of it. These complex matters involving muslim extremists are best left to the experts on them. We are lucky to have just such and expert as President.

A FISH ROTS FROM THE HEAD DOWN-THE BUCK STOPS HERE!
Who chose Janet Napolitano to head up the most important agency in the United States? Barak Obama. Who chose Eric Holder to be Attorney General?
Barak Obama. Who chose Leon Panetta to head up the CIA? Barak Obama. These were lame political appointments period!

Mr Robinson: "Don't misunderstand. I'm not blaming the Obama administration for Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's alleged terrorist attack, and it would be reprehensible for anyone to try to use the incident to score political points."

Obama made points politically by appointing these people to jobs they were not qualified to hold. The ALLEGED terrorist got through and Ms. Napolitano said the system worked and the next day said it did not and that her words were taken out of context. If they were it was because she is not smart enough make precise statements that cannot be taken out of context. She is a fine woman. Put her on the Court of Appeals where she can use her talents to support Obama's rotten policies but she must be transferred out. Eric Holder is a major fool. He ideas about those who attack us on our soil get a civil trial in New York City or wherever, and those who do not get military trials merely encourages attacks here. Wait until the Federal Court tries to give the five mutts a fair trial in New York City. The President and Holder both convicted him in statements and the crime was committed near the Courthouse. These people are enemy combatants and should be in GITMO. Trials should have started there but Obama stopped them. The transfer of these combatants to Ill. is beyond dumb. During WWII FDR ordered a military tribunal for six nazi spies. They were tried and hanged. The Supreme Court in In Re Quiren upheld the President.

The Obama administration has made so many blunders. From the bailouts that fail to produce jobs, to his dithering on Iran, his travels all over creation giving speeches to bolster his mistakes and of course the coming twin disasters of Obamacare and Cap and Trade.
2010 elections tossing out his one party fascist group think is the only hope America has to survive Obama.

TEAM OBAMA: EXPOSE BUSH-CHENEY CELL TOWER TORTURE OF AMERICANS -- OR BE BLAMED FOR THAT, TOO

If Team Obama were really smart, they would CHANGE THE SUBJECT...

...and expose the Bush-Cheney legacy misuse of a U.S government cell tower- based microwave/laser directed energy weapons system that has been TORTURING AND IMPAIRING unconstitutionally "targeted" and persecuted Americans since the early '00s.

Perhaps the government perpetrators of this heinous torture matrix are among those who see the heightened threat of terrorism as a convenient diversion.
