Obamas leave for Hawaii vacation

By Michael D. Shear
President Obama departed Thursday morning for a family vacation in Hawaii, leaving Washington for a 10-day respite after watching his health care plan finally pass the Senate in an early-morning vote.

Obama and his family boarded Marine One on the South Lawn at 10:35 a.m. Until their scheduled return to Washington on Jan. 2, the Obamas plan to stay largely out of the public eye during their time in Hawaii.

Before leaving, however, the president spent time on the phone, calling a dozen senators, the wife of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, and David Turner of Little Rock, who was Michelle Obama's guest this September when the president addressed a joint session of Congress. (The complete list of those called is after the jump.)

Turner was Exhibit A in the president's campaign to revamp the way health care is provided. According to the White House, Turner had his health insurance rescinded in January of last year, after his insurance company reexamined his record and alleged that he failed
to disclose his full medical record at the time he applied for coverage.

Obama told Turner on Thursday that he is motivated by stories like his and promised to keep working to make sure that he signs a health reform bill early next year, according to White House officials.

The president also made pre-Christmas phone calls to several members of the military services. According to the White House, he called two members of each military branch deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

In addition, Obama wrote an e-mail to his supporters to tout the passage of the Senate bill.

"In all the back and forth, it's easy to lose sight of what this incredible breakthrough really means. But consider this: This Christmas, there are millions of Americans without health insurance who risk losing everything if they get sick," he wrote. "If we finish the job, all this can change. We will have beaten back the special interests who have for so long perpetuated the status quo. We will have enacted the most important piece of social policy since the Social Security Act in the 1930s, and the most important health reform since Medicare in the 1960s."

The e-mail was sent by Obama's political arm, Organizing for America. In it, he urges his supporters to sign a "note of appreciation" to senators who voted for the bill. But he also warns
that there is still more work to be done before the bill becomes law.

"I'm counting on your help every step of the way," he writes "But for now, I hope that as you celebrate this holiday season, you remember that the work you are doing is making our union more perfect, one step at a time. For that, I am grateful to you. Merry Christmas and happy
holidays."

List of Obama's phone calls:

-- Mrs. Vicki Reggie Kennedy.

-- Mr. David Turner of Little Rock.

-- Sens. Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.), Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.), Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.), Max Baucus (D-Mont.), Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Roland W. Burris (D-Ill.)

-- Senator

Oh my goodness people. Some of you really need to take a serious double dose of a chill pill. When has any President stayed in the White House for Christmas? Why the double standard for this President?

AuthoritativeAuthoritarian, you really seem rather jealous. What really IS your problem with President Obama?

Posted by: rmilton Ask yourselves, what would Jesus do if he had a vote in the health reform debate?

The Jesus I know and have been taught about would do everything he could to see that ALL Americans have affordable health care, food and shelter, HELLO!!!!!

AA, AA, AA, you and your comrades have got to stop being haters and whiners. You never answered Milton’s question "Ask yourselves, what would Jesus do if he had a vote in the health reform debate? "

The answer was obvious but perhaps too embarrassing for you to admit. He would have voted YES to help the less fortunate among us and their families to have healthcare, including illegal immigrants. What an irony that so many bible-thumping conservatives don’t see this, especially in this most religious period coming tomorrow.

Instead you launched into an old tirade. The fact is, BHO has done countless visits to Walter Reed, Arlington, and one of the first Chief Executives in recent history who greeted our fallen at Dover. So please, stop sounding so hateful, stop the whining, you’re bordering on sounding stupid, and I’m sure you’re better than that.

Merry Christmas & (Yes, I am a small business owner and even though business has been tough this year, I am optimistic about the new year) Happy New year!!!

i have never been to hawaii. i never will be able to. in fact, i haven't had a vacation since i was a child some 35 years ago. i don't make a lot of money. i'm not "poor", but i have pay my mortgage every month first, because i know i will be late on my other bills, and i don't want to lose my house to foreclosure. i also have for the last 6 years been taking care of my blind 90 year old mother. so, the money i might someday take a vacation with (maybe a 3 day vacation in the rocky mountains.. that is what i would like anyway), is spent on her. money doesn't grow on trees, and interestingly enough, one of the compromises obama conceded this year was reductions in medicare, in order to achieve probably the worst bill he could have passed. but the reason he passed it was, so that he could go on record as having "passed something". half a$$ anything in my book is not the worth the time.. especially if it is done for ulterior motives.

so rmilton, i'm not jealous. i'm just disappointed in obama. he has not stood by any of his campaign promises. he is all for show.. he has no go.

obama is a fraud.

Maybe the mutts will stay in Hawaii. All they do is leave the White House every few weeks to travel on our dime. About like the democrat slugs in Congress who broke records with their lavish travel this year.

These as$ holes need to be run out of office at the earliest opportunity.

Mr. Bush took vactions while he was messing things up and after all of the hard work to try to fix all of Mr. Bush's mess ups Mr. Obama needs a vaction. "Authoritative do you pray for our President as the Word of God says we should do? I prayed for Bush and still do. Stop to remember this one thing, Jesus had to rest too just read the bible you'll find that is the truth.

All of you haters who don't think we need this bill are full of it. Put yourselves in the place of the many Americans who have very little health insurance of no health insurance you might feel a little differntly about this bill passing. But some of you are just like the heartless sorry republicans who want to spend millions to kill in Irqa in a war that we should never be in to start with, yes millions to kill, but not a dime to heal.
Ask yourselves, what would Jesus do if he had a vote in the health reform debate? Do you think he would say no let's not spend money to help people have a better way of life let's spend it to take life in war? What a pitiful shame it is for those of you who don't want to spend money to help others, this bill will also help some of you who are againt but you have allowed the lying republican party to blind you. For those of you who say it's welfare don't forget about the welfare bush and other republican presidents give out to the rich and call it by other names. Farmers get money from the government not to plow their fields for every seven years and pro sports owners get government money along with other rich investors, while committing legalized theft as they remove poeple from their homes in a repubilcan backed theft system they call eminent domain, and then there is george bush's and the republican party's version of welfare known as Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) in which millions of dollars were given to the auto and banking industries with no strings attached. But you haters have no problem with that, just don't spend a dime to help the poeple who really need it. You are some sick poeple, but I pray that the Lord has mercy on you because you never know when you might have to depend on the money in this bill to help you. I say way to go to those who got this deal done and a big thank you to Mr Barack Obama for caring enough to see to this getting done. This bill might not help me and my wife and children but there are many who need it and I'm glad it's going to work for them, thank God in the name of Jesus it is going to pass and help those in need.

There is NOTHING wrong with disagreeing with President Obama. We live in a country where we have the freedom to disagree. But to make personal comments by calling him a "monkey" is quite immature.

I do NOT support Barry's seemingly endless trips to Europe. That's what we have highly paid diplomats for including Hillary. I certainly do not support him taking the wife, kids and assorted aunts, etc on his trips to Europe, and to visit the Grand Canyon, and now this boondoggle to Hawaii.

The country is broke, millions are out of work. People don't have food or shelter and our soldiers are shipping out for his 'Afghanistan 'surge''. Leading the high life on Air Force One leaves me with a sour taste.
Better be careful Barry, or you will have just three years left before you you are returned to Chicagoland obscurity.

The president stands for welfare and creates a self entitlement among the citizen. When one gets things for free, one simply won't have the desire to work for it. It's a nature of human beings. It's a nature of why socialism and communism lead to poverty. The millions of Americans who rely on others instead of standing on their feet shall be helped to stand on their feet instead of spoon fed. My family and I came to the US on $50 from the sale of our house when I was 18. We all got educated and live an American dream. No one is rich enough to cover millions of self entitled folks. As Americans keep marching down the road of socialism and welfare, Americans will drain all its wealth and the poor will not even have the opportunity that I once had when I first came here. This president and congress need to learn history of socialism, learn Chinese and Vietnamese history, learn Cuban history and stay away from the stupid thing that they thought helpful for America.

Haters are so funny . . . stupid but funny. Especially those who denounce the President for flying to Hawaii - where his family and friends live -- yes there is a birth certificate there -- but it where they have traditionally spent Christmas and they pick up part of the bill personally - unlike past presidents both Republican and Democrat. As for tax payer dollars -- so funny that is a concern now after billions were borrowed from China to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy, two wars, billions to contractors (no-bid) like Halliburton, laws eliminating basic freedoms passed under the guise of security, the list goes on and on but go ahead, nit-pick, root for our country to fail and what ever you do don't look into a mirror and see an American.

One final word on the health - is it a great bill - NO. Is it a good bill - No but it is a beginning and it took 5-10 years for Social Security and Medicare later to refine the original bill. My father was a farmer, social security did not cover him when originally passed, several years later that was changed. So finally after years a beginning has been made.

Well-done Mr. President. What a year it has been! Finally this country has found a leader, with all his imperfections, who is not afraid to meet heads on the most serious challengers we face today. All those who never lifted a finger when the previous administration squandered the nation’s wealth (surplus) on unnecessary war, tax cuts for the super rich & unregulated market benefiting the greedy, now this president is trying to clean up all the mess he inherited, all of a sudden they become overly concerned about the deficit, call his actions "Socialism". And what was their solution? Another tax cut for the wealthy! The same solution that didn’t work in the past and led us to where we are today, but still! But rest assured, time will vindicate him.

In the mean time it would be wise to take a few days break from the cable & internet media that spew hatred & division and honestly look within us and ask why all this hatred? Don’t we all have an independent and rational mind? Do we always have to be manipulated into thinking this way or that way? Can’t we disagree without being disagreeable? Well-deserved break Mr. president. Relax and rest well. You need all the energy you can muster for the challenges that await you on your return. Marry X-Mas & Happy New Year to you all!

As an American born living in Canada, I say welcome back to repectability USA!! This President has worked very hard to restore your good name......as far as the right wing personal shots written by others, you all look and sound so foolish.
Merry Christmas

A depression averted, first steps toward rehabilitating our name in the world, marginal moves forward on health care, at least meeting with the world on climate change instead of sticking our heads in the sand... not a bad first 11 months, all in all.

What did you accomplish this year?

I think he's been on vacation since last Christmas.

Congress and the Adminstration (Obama) has totally lost touch with the needs of the people and the gap continues to widen.

Sounds like sour grapes to me stephenwhelton. Sour grapes from the mouth of a 5 year old... actually, make that more like 3.

Fleeing the scene of his crimes, no doubt. At $100M per Democratic senator bought, that's about $6 Billion the president stole from our grandchildren to pay out in bribes this month.

Happy 2010, Democrats
