What should Obama do with the Nobel money? Readers respond.

By Al Kamen

President Obama is in Oslo, Norway, picking up his $1.4 million Nobel Peace Prize, which he has pledged to donate to various charities. The Washington Post's In the Loop column ran a contest asking readers to suggest some serious -- and some not so serious -- charities he might want to help: Here are the top ten winners.

In the not-so-serious category:

1.The Tiger Woods Remedial Lesson Plan in Public Relations Foundation -- Matt Neufeld, Bethesda, Md., who also suggested The John Edwards-John Ensign Non-Partisan Marital Counseling Foundation;

2. $500 could be dedicated to the retirement of Sen. Joe Lieberman, the senator from Aetna -- Phillip Schaper, Kensington, Md.

3. Olympia Snowe's "Keep Wavering Republicans on the Democratic side" Foundation -- a State Department employee in Washington, D.C.

4 . Action on Smoking and Health (worthy recipient of a donation from the smoker-in-chief) --Marcia Lurensky, Washington, D.C.

5. Notre Dame -- to help them finally find a decent football coach! Larry Collette, Fort Worth, Tex.

There were many hundreds of exceptionally worthwhile on-going charities suggested, especially those that devote their energies to helping wounded veterans and the poor.

6. Fischer House -- "since his decision to extend the war is going to increase demand for their services. They serve family members of soldiers at Walter Reed." -- Brian Scott, Colorado Springs, Colo.

7. The USO -- the United Service Organizations -- "which delivers comfort, morale and recreational services to the United States military" Donald Rotunda, Washington, D.C.

8. There were multiple entries for charities to feed the poor in this area, such as SOME (So Others Might Eat), the D.C. Central Kitchen or the Capital Food Bank.

9. Environmental organizations, with Obama headed for the climate change conference, also weighed in, such as, for this region, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation -- submitted by Terry Parmelee, Washington, D.C.

10. Finally, on the international conservation group -- The Panama Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Project -- submitted by Valerie Maltese, who works at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Keep it. He won't satisfy anyone - especially repubs - no matter what he does, so he may as well keep it. If he gives it away, his critics will say that he's trying to sway opinion in his favor, or some other type of rubbish. So, he should put it in the bank for his children college educations.

He should give it to my favorite Charities.
One's that respect and protect children.
I could give him the name of my favorite charity, but I am sure he would not appreciate them. So I suggest that he give it to Charter Schools so children may get a chance at a much better education than the damaging public Schools.

At least Obama's prize is in the full amount. Next year, the Nobel Committee might actually downsize the prize money (via Reuters).

JRM2, just when does the Dems take responsibility for spending our country into a black hole?

And it seems, adoring Nobels aside, that Obama is largely following Bushs policies anyway. Plus a tril or two.

Since some of the "humor" here is meant to disparage conservatives
while "leaning liberal," how about using some of the money to pay for the fuel for Pelosi's numerous commutes from Washington to San Francisco?
Or, some of the money could go to pay the bill for the "refreshments" served while Democrats hold their "secret meetings" on healthcare reform?
How about reimbursing the taxpayers for the thousands of pages on which Democrats have written the "transparent" healthcare reform?
How about putting some of the "bribe for votes money" back in the budget?
So many possibilities. Hope our president gives it more thought.

Easy decision, if he had an moral integrity. Donate the money to therapists, doctors, nurses, hospitals who will be taking care of severely wounded soldiers coming home after fighting in the Bush-Obama wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The President now and those in the future could put any financial awards, etc., into a fund that would issue Presidential Scholarships to outstanding young people who either need financial help or who might study abroad to gain a better understanding of other governments and people.

Here's an idea. Use the funds to promote PEACE. Support and create organizations that teach children and young people that have been exposed to violence and war and hatred to learn to solve problems through peaceful means instead of by the violence they haveknown. Other ideas would be to fight modernday slavery and to prevent young girls from being forced into marriage.

Isn't Obama required to turn over money to Congress since it is a gift from a foreign country? I think there is something in the Constitution about the president and/or other officers not allowed to accept emoluments.

I am so tired of all of the sickness and hatred in this place. A man of color won POTUS and these hatemongers are about to blow up. PLEASE! Calm down. Obama does not hate you as you do him. You have nothing at all to worry about.

And why are you trying to tell Obama what to do with his prize money? He did not seek the prize and was as shocked as the rest of us when it was awarded.

The first thing the haters began to wail was, "He should not accept it!" Who among the haters would have turned down the Nobel Peace Prize? I do not speak of the money. The answer to that is quite obvious since that is what they are worried about in the first place. Obama has said he is donating the money to charity so you can stop worrying about that. I speak of the Nobel Peace Prize itself. NOT ONE OF THESE SICK PEOPLE WOULD HAVE TURNED IT DOWN. And not one would urge Sarah Palin or George W. Bush or Dick Cheney to turn it down either.

your ignorance is showing...
by federal law he has to turn the money over to the treasury just like Roosevelt did...
if the congress decides to return it, then so be it but until then he follows the law...
this can be used to impeach him if he disposes of the money without congressional consent...

Posted by: DwightCollins | December 10, 2009 2:01 PM | Report abuse

Whatever he does with the money, I am certain he will do it in an ethical and moral common sense manner.

Some of the above comments point to the issue of "hate" which seems to be commonplace today and very depressing. Also, dangerous.

Just imagine - a foreign body giving (bribing) the President of the United States money to influence his future decisions. Just think of it was Bush and what would the reaction be?

He received this award(?) as an employee of the United States, so technically it's not his money to give away. He has 60 days to turn the money over to the Federal Government.

give it back and say the truth for a change about the reality of this world.
Dr. Death, was the pseudonym in XIX c. press of Mr. Nobel, the inventor of dynamite and chemical explosives that made him extremely wealthy in the prussian and I World War.
His only rival was Mr. Krupp, who made grease with nazi prisoners for his cannons. But Nobel was smarter. He set companies in all countries to sell weapons to each contendant. Uncle Fred also said about the Nobel Peace he instituted not to loose his very young activist lover: 'my factories will make peace earlier than all those congresses by inventing weapons that annihilate entire nations in a second'.
Right now all the wannabe Nobels assemblied at CERN have switched a quark cannon that will shoot black holes to this planet, a Damocles Machine that menaces our very own survival, called in the peaceful newspeak of the new era, an instrument of research
You live in an Orwellian era in which all words are the antitruth of what they really mean. That is why Mr. Obama does deserves the prize, because he is the best, disguising truth, i suggest the next for CERN if we are still here LOL Humans can think of themselves to be the center of the cosmos, when they are nothing but electroweak bacteria.
‘We are a thin layer of mush on a rock speck in a corner of the Universe. Now, departing from those facts, we can talk about man.’ Schopenhauer
What humans CANNOT CHEAT are the laws of the Universe as CERN pretends to do.
If Obama wants to walk among 'giants' I suggest he stops the creation of mass bombs (M=E/c2) and the 'peaceful evolution' of black holes, here on Earth, just in case. That would be a 'change we believe in' for a change.
