Bill Clinton going Monday to Haiti to deliver relief supplies

Former president Bill Clinton will travel Monday to Haiti to deliver emergency relief supplies and meet with the country's leaders, his foundation's office said Sunday.

Clinton will meet with President Rene Preval and other members of the Haitian government, as well as visit with those assisting in the earthquake relief effort, the foundation said.

"As U.N. Special Envoy for Haiti, I feel a deep obligation to the Haitian people to visit the country and meet with President Preval to ensure our response continues to be coordinated and effective," Clinton said in a statement from the foundation.

Clinton and former president George W. Bush have agreed to lead a major fundraising effort, the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. Clinton and Bush's father, George H.W. Bush, led a similar effort after the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean.

President Bill Clinton commented on the aid bottleneck, to the effect that "it's not anyone's fault, it's more like nobody's in charge, because of the way that the quake took out all of the local government officials..."

He didn't come right out and say it, but I shall:

Draft the Caribbean Region HQ staff of FedEx to assume a top-level advisor and potentially administrative position to ORGANIZE the relief effort, and to extend it beyond the bounds of Port-au-Prince. Perhaps a secondary distribution hub a Leogane.

I realize the former president means well, but in the midst of the "CHAOS" to visit this early in the game.. makes no sense. Now with limited security availabe some much needed time and energy must be devoted to his safety. Preval is overwhelmed. He needs working hands to get dead bodies out of the street.

All efforts should be about getting more help to doctors/and those rescuing people. All else is a distraction. http://www.zipinpolitics.com

Bill Clinton would do better to stay home and keep out of the way of the military, doctors, nurses, rescue people, etc. The fact that it was even announced to the media tells you that its just another photo opt!

Get these political hacks out of the way of the U.S. military! It is the U.S. military who is getting the job done, while the U.N. and USAID(State Department)
are creating chaos!

Former President Bill Clinton is going to Haiti to help guide President Preval in leading his people out of misery.

His strategic placement is mandatory.
And Bill Clinton loves Haiti.
No one better qualified at this time for this bibilical event.
Hillary loves Haiti. Her "performance" on Saturday was magnificent. She did a "move" during that press conference while the cameras were shooting that pretty much got by everyone else but I noticed.

A Haitian reporter, (beautiful lady) --probably fighting the crowd to get in further---got to the "ear" of Hillary in time--before Hillary starting really speaking to the microphone or cameras. This lady told Hillary that the Haitian press needs to hear this, please.
The Haitian press would NOT have been involved in this press conference in a way they should have been. Hillary caught it immediately and started waving Haitian press to the front. And then said "I want to talk to the Haitian people through the Haitian press".
This was a brilliant move. Brilliant.

Hillary just may be the first woman President of the USA.

The only ex-president Haitian need to see on their soil, is President Aristide. Pronto.

Now more security will be needed for Bill Clinton's photo-op trip on Monday. I was trying to be objective and tolerate the man for once, but he is truly despicable. What's next, a visit by the Pope on Tuesday? This is the worse natural disaster in this hemisphere, and he and his super-ego have to show up six days after the earthquake when people who could be saved are going to die because they did not get the surgery and other medical treatment they need, when entire areas of the country outside of Port au Prince are not getting the relief supplies they so desperately need, when children, the elderly and orphans are not getting the help they need.

hey jbento--
You've been posting that entry for 2 lousy days now. Knock it off.

....."am hearing from people in Haiti that our response is a major disaster in itself. Thousands of people are dying every day because the relief is so screwed up. Thousands dying for lack of water and food and from being trapped."

Then your people in Haiti are too busy on the cell or texting to get to a distribution center.
Thousands of people are dead already. Haiti released the count "100,000 at a minimum"...and that was yesterday.
More will die. Tonight may be the last night on earth for people trapped under buildings we don't even know about yet.
They are not dying because "the relief is so screwed up". Let's be clear about that.

They are dying because of a 200 year biblical buckling of the earth whereby no response like this has EVER been tried.

The trapped people are dead. Sorry but it's happening as we speak.
Water and food is there. If YOUR PEOPLE in Haiti can text and call and email, they can get to a distribution center if they are one of the 3 million in Port au Prince.

The other cities have a press black out.

I'd like to see some logical and at least gracious entries at WaPo as this issue gets worse. And it's getting worse folks.

Amazing... Bill going to Haiti to deliver relief supplies. My big question is how much will he be able to deliver in his gulfstream 3?

He is a distraction not a solution. He is too weak to handle the 30lb water cases. He is too

I am hearing from people in Haiti that our response is a major disaster in itself. Thousands of people are dying every day because the relief is so screwed up. Thousands dying for lack of water and food and from being trapped.

Obama is worst than Bush!

Bill and Hillary Clinton have been involved with Haiti since 1975 when they spent their honeymoon in that country.Through out the years they have given money, their skills and time to improve Haiti. How many politicians do you know off can say the same thing? The nay sayers commenting here are just clueless and irrational like Pat Robertson. As head of the State Department, Hillary is responsible for our nation's and the State Department's response to the crisis in Haiti. She had to travel there to work out agreements with the Haitian president so the U.S. can smoothly deliver aid to the country among other reasons. As for Bill Clinton, he's the UN Special Envoy for Haiti and any body with some functioning brain cells would surely understand why he's traveling to Haiti.

The Clintons have been involved with Haiti for many years and genuinely know and understand these people and their needs. The Bushes have also been involved with the Haitians and will work closely with the Clintons on their behalf.

this is on a slightly different note, but at this very moment, barack "the messiah" obama is in boston stumping for that bimbo coakley to replace the late senator ted kennedy. so, while haiti is in critical condition, obama mentioned the name 'haiti' ONE TIME in his speech, and then immediately went on to his politics. what a jerk. but what was great, were there were a lot of HECKLERS at this obama rally, and at first obama laughed, but when they continued, our "chosen one" was obviously getting upset.

hey obama.. maybe if you can't stand the heat, you should stay out of the kitchen!

p.s. and PLEASE bill clinton.. don't go down to haiti.. honest, they don't need the disruption of the attention a president of u.s. DEMANDS.

sally62 misread and thought Obama was going to Haiti. Good for her for acknowledging the misread.

However, she also "misread" reports on the Fort Hood massacre. Here's what she wrote:
"I do have a problem with Obama not having had the time to visit the victims at Fort Hood. (just a local police affair)"

The reality is that he postponed a long-planned trip to Asia to go right to Fort Hood, meet with the families of the dead, mingle with the troops, and give an important and widely praised speech of eulogy.

I hope this clears up sally62's "problem" with Obama supposedly not doing exactly what he actually did, which was to go right to Fort Hood.

JCM-51 is poorly informed. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived on a previously scheduled military cargo plane packed with supplies. They made sure to do it that way precisely to avoid any delay to aid arriving.

The "doctors without frontiers" plane from France was coming up against the triage rules on which planes got priority -- military, food, water and other supplies, or humanitarian workers. It had nothing to do with the supply plane Clinton hitched a ride on.

This fantasy that there is such disorder that American paratroopers are required is insane and not supported by any of the reporting. Despite limited reports of looting and scrabbling for supplies (which JCM-51's notion of dropping from the sky without any distribution, security, or control would only encourage), most reports are describing surprising calm, resilience, and self-sufficiency by the people, who are of course desperately hungry and dehydrated.

Every news story has reported on the full-on, maximum response by the federal government, directed by President Obama, which has been underway since Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. It has been fully documented in every possible way on every news source. He has been reporting regularly to the American people as well on the status of US efforts, almost every day.

However, as President Obama himself said on the campaign trail, presidents have to be able to do more than one thing at a time. While responding fully to Haiti he has also announced a tax on the bailed out banks to get back every cent the American taxpayers spent on the bailout; continued the House-Senate healthcare reform negotiation; taken his wife out to dinner for her birthday; given an important speech in honor of the Martin Luther King holiday; and yes, made (or will make) a campaign appearance for Coakley in Massachusetts. None of this is detracting from the full-tilt military and civilian response to the Haitian crisis, as is obvious.

According to JCM-51, going to Haiti, even by hitching a ride on a supply plane bringing desperately needed supplies, is shameful on the part of Hillary Clinton as the secretary of state or Bill Clinton as the UN special envoy to Haiti. Not going to Haiti, on the part of Barack Obama, is also shameful. Seems like a bit of a logic gap there.

If JCM-51 wants to know what's actually shameful, he or she should look in the mirror at a right-wing nut, trapped in a hateful Hollywood action movie version of reality, and using the death of hundreds of thousands of fellow human beings to attack prominent Americans for partisan advantage. Disgusting.

Apologies - misread - my mistake.

I have nothing against the American president showing empathy for neighbors - millions of Americans of all beliefs will be donating and doing what they can.

I do have a problem with Obama not having had the time to visit the victims at Fort Hood. (just a local police affair)

I hope his choices of venues don't have anything to do with grandstanding, being better at a "Katrina", or race. After all it appears they're having problems with getting flights in and help distributed. Is this costly trip in time and airspace really a necessity?

Will his presence even be noticed by the victims or help them in any way or just give him press coverage?

Posted by: sally62 | January 17, 2010 3:54 PM | Report abuse

Another illustration of predator Bill's huge ego.
He never passes up an oportunity to get his ugly mug on camera, regardlesss of the nature of the disaster.
If the jerk cares so much for the Haitian people, I wonder how much of his own money he has contributed. My bet is absolutely zero.
Typical phony liberal. Leech off others, but never give a dime of their own.

So will the French plane with field hospital which could not land due to Hillary's flight in now be delayed another day so Bill can grandstand? And when is Obama going to show some leadership? The military will do what Obama (The Command in Chief) tells them to do. No reason Airborne soliders can not parachute in rather than land on airfields--at least then they can begin to establish order so aid can be distributed. And in the meantime, no reason we can not parachute in pallets of food and water. People are dying for lack of the basics, Obama is off in MA trying to salvage a lost election for one of his political cronies. Don't blame the military, blame their Commander in Chief.
