Lautenberg releases video of Newark airport security breach
Updated 3:40 p.m.
Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) released Thursday a surveillance video that shows a man sneaking through security to meet a woman Sunday at Newark Liberty International Airport, causing the terminal to shut down for six hours.
The video also shows a guard leaving his post, allowing the man to sneak into the terminal without going through security. The resulting shutdown caused massive delays at one of the country's busiest airports.
The video shows a guard leaving his podium for several seconds. The woman then comes from inside a secure, passengers-only area and motions to the man, who ducks under a rope. The couple embraces and walks arm-in-arm past the vacant podium.
The footage was captured by cameras operated by Continental Airlines after cameras used by the Transportation Security Administration were found to be not working properly.
Lautenberg requested the video from the TSA, and he said he released it publicly to help authorities identify and arrest the man.
"After viewing video of the security breach, I am even more outraged by the lapse," the senator said in a statement. "The more people who see this image, the faster we will find the person in question."
The security officer has been placed on administrative leave.
