Palin says new book tells 'a lie' about her

By Scott Butterworth and Howard Kurtz
Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin (R) said Tuesday night that it was "a lie" that she didn't know the difference between North Korea and South Korea during the 2008 presidential campaign.

Palin dismissed that and other assertions in a new book that reviews the presidential race as "gossipy anonymous accusations."

Her appearance on "The O'Reilly Factor" was Palin's first on a Fox News show since Monday's announcement that she would join the cable network as a contributor. She was asked by host Bill O'Reilly to respond to several claims cited in the book "Game Change," which was the subject of a segment Sunday on CBS's "60 Minutes."

Palin said she skipped the CBS news show, saying, "I had been warned, you know, don't watch."

But she rejected the characterization of her preparations for the vice presidential debate with Sen. Joe Biden (D). Steve Schmidt, the campaign manager for John McCain's presidential bid, told the network that he was warned she was headed toward "a debacle of historic and epic proportions."

"That is not true," Palin said on Fox News. "And Steve Schmidt told us how overjoyed he was after the debate, so pleased with the way everything turned out."

Palin said the book's authors were wrong in writing that she didn't know who her Army soldier son was going overseas to fight, or why the Korean Peninsula remains divided among two countries.

"I think that these are the political establishment reporters who love to gin up controversy and spin up gossip. The rest of America doesn't care about that," Palin said.

O'Reilly asked her whether, as the book claims, Palin thought Saddam Hussein was behind the 9/11 attacks. She responded, "You know what, on that, I did talk a lot to Steve Schmidt about the history of the war and about where, perhaps, the 9/11 terrorists came from and could there have been any connection to Saddam. ... So I admit that I have questions about it."

She went on to add that she thought Schmidt was "basing this on an anonymous source. So all that kind of gossipy anonymous accusations, I really don't pay it any mind, because, again, Bill, I know what's important."

Palin also assessed President Obama's latest poll numbers, telling O'Reilly, "Of course, they're sinking. It was just a matter of time before more of that reflection of the people's uncomfortableness that they feel towards this administration is manifesting in these poll numbers."

It's interesting to read all of the disparaging comments about Palin & Fox News. I would like to offer the following observations:

If Fox News is so awful, why do they regularly beat CNN & MSNBC combined? (This is easy to verify online) Do you really think only the smart people are watching the other news programs?

If Palin is so dumb, how did she get elected Governor of Alaska, are all of her detractors saying Alaskans are dumber than Palin? If that is the case, how dumb was her Democrat opponent, Tony Knowles, who had previously been Governor and out spent her during the campaign? And why did Polls taken in 2007 showed her with around a 90% popularity among all voters, including the democrats (are they dumb also?), which led some media outlets to call her "the most popular governor in America."

Iconoblaster, as dumb as Palin's followers may be, they're geniuses compared to her detractors.

Hey Sarah! Do you agree with Pat Robertson's harsh assessment of the tragedy in Haiti? Do you have any idea what Haiti is? Is it the opposite of Lovi?
Thanks Pat Robertson for taking the heat off of Harry Reid!
Maybe a Palin presidency would be God's judgement on the world.

"I think that these are the political establishment reporters who love to gin up controversy and spin up gossip. The rest of America doesn't care about that," Palin said.

It is presumptious of her to think that. Even if the good citizens of this country didn't care that doesn't make Mr. Schmidt's assertions false. I think a fair number of Americans do care if their presidential candidates are knowledgeable about international politics. Maybe she is referring to her own fans; they seem only to care that she is pretty and can toss out throwaway cliches and attack her opponents using labels like "socialists" and "spineless elitists". She will fit in quite well at FOX where the commentators employ slanderous and hateful rhetoric on a daily basis.

"She drew thousands to the McCain campaign. She drew thousands to her book signings. All those people cannot be wrong; dumb; uneducated as the critics claim."

Oh, really? Why couldn't they? And even if they aren't, their attendance at book signings doesn't necessarily indicate that they were Palin fans... some people will take advantage of an opportunity to get any celebrity's signature.

Posted by: Iconoblaster | January 13, 2010 4:18 PM | Report abuse

I'm no Sarah Palin fan, but her defense of her suspicions that Hussein might have had some hand in 9/11 is perfectly reasonable, even though, as it turns out, he didn't. For one thing, the crew of Bush the Lesser wasted no opportunity to promote that idea, early on, and a lot of people bought it. For another, despite the concerted effort to ridicule anyone who asks them, there are (still) a lot of unanswered questions about 9/11.

There are plenty of good reasons to oppose any bid Palin might make for high office, including assertions about all that she doesn't know. This particular item just isn't one of them.

Posted by: Iconoblaster | January 13, 2010 4:12 PM | Report abuse

She drew thousands to the McCain campaign. She drew thousands to her book signings. All those people cannot be wrong; dumb; uneducated as the critics claim. They are people looking for something different from "politics as usual."

So you're looking to this woman for something different from politics as usual? You really don't get it.

She drove people away from McCain too, have you stopped to consider that? I would have voted for McCain except for the fact that he's an old man and his successor would have been this woman.

Between Obama and this woman as potential president, I had nobody to vote for.

There are better people to follow. Your slavish devotion to one of the more fundamentally ignorant people to run for national office in recent memory is no better than the liberal hatred you despise. It's reactionary, and simplistic.

Posted by: khote14 | January 13, 2010 4:07 PM | Report abuse

The nationwide hate of Sarah Palin is incivility at its height. Alaska is an isolated state where the people primarily live off the sea, the land and the oil beneath it. They talk differently; they think differently and there is nothing wrong with that. You people who constantly criticize Sarah Palin need to get a life.

She drew thousands to the McCain campaign. She drew thousands to her book signings. All those people cannot be wrong; dumb; uneducated as the critics claim. They are people looking for something different from "politics as usual."

Is Ms. Palin"s remark about "people's unconfortableness" about Obama just her way of showing her real feelings that SHE is unconfortable with having a Black man as President?
Just wondering?

Ms. Palin gives the term "education" an undeserving bad reputation. This should be a warning to all Americans that intelligence should be a citeria in electing anyone to a public office. I personally would love to see her transcript as many students change colleges so their GPA does not register the foul grades they received only a P or F shows at the next college or university attended.

Funny how Palin mentions the polls: the latest poll shows that 65% of Americans think Mr. Obama is handling terrorism well.

Also funny how Palin continues to diss the media, even though now she is ONE OF THEM.

Wait a minute, O'Reilly asks Palin to come on his show to respond to the CBS new show about her when Palin had not even seen the CBS news show? Forgive me if this sounds like a silly question but how in the world does not having seen the show prepare Palin to respond to the show? Now I wonder if she even read the book the show was about. Considering the amount of reading she told Couric she did, I seriously doubt it.

I swear, Fox News looks more and more like bizarro world every day. Or maybe knowlege of a subject just gets in the way when talking about it on Fox News. Ignorance is bliss, especially when both Fox News and its audience work to maintain it. You did a heckofa job Sarah at maintaining your ignorance yet again. And this is what pays big bucks?

This is absolutely the perfect job for Sarah Palin. Now she doesn't have to worry about what she called the "actual responsibility" of governing. She gets to talk on TV, but no one asks her any questions! She can opine about death panels and climate change and absolutely no one will say: excuse me, Ms. Palin, but where exactly do you get that from? Back when you were governor, didn't you have to move two communities in Alaska because the ice around them was melting? She can say we hate big government in Alaska, but no one will ask her: Ms. Palin, isn't it true that Alaskans get more federal earmarks per person than anyone in any other state of the Union? Did you ever say thanks but no thanks to that? On Fox, she can continue to do what she does best -- spin half truths in her own cocoon, while advancing her political career. But ask her a question and wow -- you are a media meanie, out to get her, anti-Christian, socialist, liberal elitist.

I used to think she was just W in a skirt, but actually, she is worse. She is more narcissistic, more belligerant about her ignorance, and less willing to have experts tell her anything.

I do not blame her for quitting, I am sure that she lives in fear that one of these many, many "lies" will be proven and she will be "outed" as the fraud that she is. Thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis are now dead because of our Iraq invasion. And one of the big reasons we went was because the Bush/Palin crowd scared people into believing Sadddam was behind 9/11 even though every expert in the field said this was nonsense.

Now, years later, she's still casting doubt on that?

That is disrespectful to the memories of the countless war dead.

I don't believe anything she says now that she's a part of that gosh darn "liberal media." All the problems in our country originate with the media.

On the real, she followed advice which told her NOT to watch a 60 Minutes story on her? Really? If I was going to be the subject of a story on the best news program in television history, you bet your bottom dollar that I would be watching. How else can you accurately respond to a "story" about you unless you know exactly what that story was?

Must have been too busy reading "ALL" those magazines.

So let me get this straight...kissing her ass with praise is ok...disagree with her and it is a lie !!

Posted by: Paul2 | January 13, 2010 6:24 AM | Report abuse

Small point of truth:
She's now a news commentator at a major media outlet, not a politician. She may be pithy and good at it for all we know. She might also end up with more truthful, well researched opinions than others in a similar role on the network because she got scorched so badly by politics. This might be a good fit for her, a sort of `Jane the Plumber' kind of role in the process.

I can't disagree with her notion that it was 'Gods plan' for her to run, she did after all lose. Who am I to argue with those results. There's some degree of indirect humility in saying that.

twotimetuna: The whole "DEMOCRAT COMMUNIST PARTY" thing... Get a grip on reality. Democrats are not communists. No amount of saying it will make it true. Democrats have been the ones pushing to keep jobs in America from going to China. A communist political system is defined by one party government. There's no opposition, loyal or otherwise in a communist system. Democrats are no more all liberal than all Republicans are fascists.

Stop working to shrink the tent & start working on some new ideas. Perhaps with bit of focus on compassion to your ostensible conservatism.

Right now, the GOP is still the party of Bush/Cheney. If they'd been such a roaring success, and had good results, there's NO WAY Obama would have gotten elected.

The thing to do would be to try to figure out what didn't work, and change those things. Not get witlessly filled with rage and act like sore losers.

As one who has been slandered many times, I'm sympathetic to former Governor Palin making that claim. And I'm also sympathetic to the fact that yet another gossipy book pretends to make a contribution. But too many credible people have contradicted the accounts of the very lovely Sarah Palin, and I will remain on guard until she is consistent and contrite. At the moment she appears to be exploiting the national discontent that has its roots in decisions made by the Bush administration, and cashing in with large speaker fees as well. If she is sincere, former Governor Palin will forego huge fees in favor of only covering legitimate expenses. Until she does that, former Governor Palin is just another politician.

"O'Reilly asked her whether, as the book claims, Palin thought Saddam Hussein was behind the 9/11 attacks. She responded, "You know what, on that, I did talk a lot to Steve Schmidt about the history of the war and about where, perhaps, the 9/11 terrorists came from and could there have been any connection to Saddam. ... So I admit that I have questions about it."

So, in her typical Simple Sarah mumble-mode, no, she didn't have a clue...

Amazing, and so sad for our country.

I remember when a very conservative friend sent me an email after the McCain VP choice was announced that contained two images. One was Joe Biden captioned "They get this" and the other was the Sarah Palin running suit photo captioned "And we get THIS". I could only shake my head in total disappointment that the only thing that mattered to the GOP party faithful was that their VP candidate was a MILF and nothing more. None of the GOP were interested even slightly in her qualifications.

Then, when Palin's handlers lost their grip, it was apparent to all except the horniest and the most gullable of the GOP that the woman was a blithering idiot who, by virtue of her looks, could do no wrong in thought, word or deed.

The fact that this shallow, mentally vacuuous eye-candy could be placed on the national stage and be kept there as if she were relevent is a sad statement about the GOP, this nation and the media.

It is laughable to claim she has accomplished more than most. Let's see, she went to six colleges in four years, probably bored because she found out you actually have to study if you want to learn; she won a very minor "beauty contest", she was Mayor of a tiny backwater village, she was Governor for eighteen months of an entire state that only has about 650,000 population, smaller than the city of Baltimore, Maryland. She bores quickly, that is obvious. Now she "wrote" a book, traveled around the country on a bus while secretly boarding a private airplane and now she has achieved the grand position of a Fox Propaganda opiner. Fox is like the hell where those devoid of talent and knowledge make their living. They are encouraged by supporters exactly them, little knowledge, little conscience. Palin should shine at Fox and she better watch out or Bill O'Really will be practicing telephone-sex with her, if his ego can abide Palin being more popular. I can't wait to hear Palin and Beck together expounding on their "God" beliefs. To those who claim otherwise, No, liberals, Democrats, Indenpendents, etc do not fear her, you idiots, we laugh AT HER because she is so uneducated. If my son were getting ready to go to a war zone, I would sure as heck know where that war zone is, why we are there, and would have a map of it hanging in my kitchen.

I do not know any Liberals who "fear and hate this woman." They laugh at her and her supporters. The idea that just a regular person with what they call common sense is an example of simplistic thinking in itself.

She has been nominated for the liar of the year award for her "Death Panel" statement for instance. She will do fine on Fox (opinion) news, they will see that she says what they want her to say. That she is so popular with the loony right makes sense as she is just a loony as they are.

The real Libertarians certainly do not support her with her fundamentalist religious beliefs and total lack of anything related to actual knowledge.

Try asking her about Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton and why they so disliked each other. Ask her why Jefferson's embargo on England failed, and how it led to the war of 1812. Ask her why john Buchanan is regarded as the worst US president, who was involved in the Teapot Dome scandal, or why Hoovers economic stimulus failed. Ask her what the difference is between Keynes' economic theory and Adam Smith's theory.

Ask who Fredick Hayeck was, and will see the real paucity of he knowledge, of course most of you right wingnut posters can not answer those questions either.

Fist thing you learn in graduate school is; common sense is not sense but opinion.

Good 'ole Sarah's new stint on Fox is the best news possible for anyone interested in obtaining really reliable news or comment on the news. A TV station that hires this poor befuddled lady as a newscaster, commentator or analyst reveals itself as purveyor of silly drivel with a reliability rating a bit lower than Mickey Mouse or Elmer Fudd. Fox may however win envious notice as the newest comedy channel on the tube. Whatever else she may or may not be, silly Sarah is certainly a hilarious performer. As a source of real news Fox can now be rated a bit less than minus 1. As a purveyor of comedy, Fox has risen at a single stroke to hosting the best show since the good old days of Jack Benny, Rochester and their memorable Maxwell.

Unfortunately for her, the more she exposes herself to public scrutiny, the less credibility she has - except for the Tea Baggers and her fans. It's amazing that she really thinks she has it. Although I think the new book - Game Change - is just a tell-all-with-no-sources type of book, based on negatives and gossip, it seems probable that the revelations about her knowledge of world affairs are close to the mark, based on other reports that she was unwilling to bone up for her debate. But since it appears that her immediate plans are to raise money, fast, the Fox job is a good fit for her.

Is that true, or is she just pandering to her loyal base, many members of which still think Iraq had something to do the 9/11 attack.

My favorite part was when she announced that oh, by the way, she was giving that pesky $100,000 speaker's fee back to the Tea Party Convention... after being criticized for several days even by tea party members. Surely if she had felt that strongly about it, she never would have taken it, or would have announced her generosity right away.

So at least she's not too stupid to ignore when she blatantly appears to be a money-grubbing, manipulative, and narcissistic private citizen.

Other than that, she didn't say a single thing that wasn't a talking point, a cliche, or a campaign slogan. Couldn't even commit to her own overheated rhetoric by saying whether she'd bomb Iran or not. I also enjoyed it when O'Reilly pointed out that LOTS of politicians talk about common sense governing for the people, blah blah blah, yet still people criticize her personally so much.

Translation: Since your ideas are unoriginal and unexceptional, they must just dislike you.

If this shows the language skills of "journalists", we are doomed! Of course, Palin routinely takes a hatchet to the English language.

Sex sells and even get's you a job as shown with Sarah. The guys at Fox News are looking to get lucky and Pat Bachanan is pushing his way up in line. Now will someone please tell Sarah in 1945 War of Korea the Country divided into North and South. Putin is no longer President of Russia and Iraq and Iran are not one country. Sarah has used sex to get a College Degree and her career and it's worked very well. Fox News male employees will need the Health Care Plan with Sarah putting out.

"You know what, on that, I did talk a lot to Steve Schmidt about the history of the war and about where, perhaps, the 9/11 terrorists came from and could there have been any connection to Saddam. ... So I admit that I have questions about it."

My God! Six years after the fact and she still believes the Bush lies that have been debunked, even by Bush himself?

"She went on to add that she thought Schmidt was "basing this on an anonymous source. So all that kind of gossipy anonymous accusations, I really don't pay it any mind, because, again, Bill, I know what's important."

Oh yea, she knows what's important, except who actually attacked us on 911. Lemme guess, O'Reilly did not ask her any followup questions about her ignorant answers...

HELP SCOTT BROWN DEFEAT THE DEMOCRAT COMMUNIST PARTY GOVERNMENT HEALTHCARE PLAN

DONATE http://www.brownforussenate.com/

Also, all you fools that say anything against Sarah Palin remember: She has accomplished more in her short life than your family has for generations. Idiots.

"It was just a matter of time before more of that reflection of the people's uncomfortableness that they feel towards this administration is manifesting in these poll numbers."

Someone should publish a collection of her best sentences.

Once again the MSM misses the real story from Today as it continues to protect John McCain. At 7:11 this morning Matt Lauer asked McCain about some passages in Game Change that the vetting process of Palin was inadequate and haphazard, detailing some of the basic things that weren't done. McCain's answer was "I wouldn't know." When Lauer (aka I never met a Republican I can't suck up to) actually expressed surprise and even shock -- McCain started to babble and pretend he meant something else. Why won't the MSM report on this?

Palin says these things never happened but then only offers the lame retort that "they weren't there" as proof. This is worse than Mark McGwire's steroids mea culpa tour.

Sarah should know from "lies."

But she doesn't rely on "gossipy" anonymous sources. She just plain makes ***t up then feeds it to a ghost writer!

It's going to be fun to see how long she lasts at FOX News before they tire of her bombast.
She apparently tends to walk away from any position in which she has to actually face facts.
Since the FOX News people continue to tolerate Rove, I'm not holding my breath.
Every time she opens her mouth, I once again thank our stars and God Himself that the voters in America showed such good sense during the November, 2008 election.
Let us hope they stay aware in coming election cycles and never forget what the GOP party put this country into.

Shocking revelation: Palin is a dimwit!!! You'd have to be a total blockhead (and/or Bill Kristol) not to have known this since she unfortunately appeared.

Sarah Palin wouldn't last one round on "Are You Smarter than a Fifth-Grader" without using her Peak, Copy and Cheat. Typical ignorant Republican.

Palin is perfect for Fox UnNews and the 26% of Americans that are really so stupid that they have to be told what to believe.

You just can't fix stupid!

The reflection of my "uncomfortableness" towards this woman is manifesting itself in my refusal to watch Fox News. What ever happened to "discomfort," or is that use of that word too elitist?

Sarah Palin is a liar and a quitter, and dangerously ignorant, her denials notwithstanding. She's absolutely perfect for Fox news.

Oh, how I look forward to this idiot
giving her 'opinion' on world affairs on Fox.

Why does anyone think the super egos there will let this ditz play super donna. They'll wipe up the floor with her.

She is unbelieveably dumb. proves it every time she opens her mouth. And her wrinkles are showing....

that last quote is a doozy. She will give W a run for his money when it comes to butchering the English language. I for one am hoping she dresses a moose live and on the air.

Why does it not surprise me that Palin would be the first one to jump out and dispute what was written in the book "Game Change" concerning her stupidity and ignorance.

As of date, no one else has come out and disputed their tried and true ignorance on the 2008 campaign trail.

Honest-to-God, who cares what she has to say about anything?

Unless, of course, your IQ is hovering around 90.
