Bernard Kerik sentenced to four years in prison

Associated Press
Former New York City police commissioner Bernard Kerik, who was hailed as a hero after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks and nearly became chief of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, was sentenced to four years behind bars Thursday for eight felonies.

Kerik admitted in November that he lied to the White House, filed false taxes and committed other crimes.

"The fact that Mr. Kerik would use that event (9/11) for personal gain and aggrandizement is a dark place in the soul for me," said federal Judge Stephen Robinson.

An apologetic Kerik said before the sentence was pronounced: "Allow me to return to my wife and two little girls as soon as possible." Federal guidelines indicated Kerik's sentence should be between 27 and 33 months in prison. Robinson said he went beyond the guidelines because they could not account for certain factors.

Kerik was "the chief law enforcement law enforcement officer for the biggest and grandest city this nation has," Robinson said. The crimes were committed "in the process of attempting to become a cabinet level position in the government of the United States."

Kerik, 54, has already been ordered to pay $188,000 in restitution and to pay past-due taxes and penalties on six years of tax returns.

"I know that people across the country share my deep concern for these federal employees and the trauma they have experienced," Colleen M. Kelley, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, said in a statement.

Wow! What a statement. Sounds like she is angling for PTSD treatment, paid time off and hazardous work environment compensation for government union members. Sounds like these union members are attempting to get personal "financial gain" after a tragedy. We're gonna need a bigger prison.

Maybe Rudy Giuliani will now retire one of his favorite 9/11 anecdotes, the one in which he (supposedly) turned to Bernie Kerik and (supposedly) said ‘Thank God George Bush is President."

It doesn't play so well, now that Bernie is sporting an orange jumpsuit.

Kerik has been found guilty of being the sleaze he appeared to be. So he lied to Federal officials and engaged in tax evasion. OK, he's a crook-- lock him up.

But, here's a news flash for the Judge:

If we're going to start punitive criminal punishment for perceived personal "aggrandizement" and "financial gain" arising out of the events of 9/11, then the prosecutors and the courts should plan on some major exponential expansion of their facilities/staff, because that is a very wide net to cast, and a very large number of individuals and companies to haul in.

Let's start with most politicians, defense contractors, [and, yes, even some 9/11 "heros", "first responders", and "survivors"], the former Mayor of NY City, and the list goes on and on.

Kerik is no different than hundreds if not thousands of other people/companies who attempted to, and in many cases did, successfully cash in on a tragedy, the only difference being that he violated the law in the process and got caught.

In that respect, the events of 9/11 no more made either Kerik or former Mayor Rudy a "security expert" than a meteorite hitting my home would make me an expert in protecting one's home from meterorites.

The bottom line is a lot of people, politicans, individuals and contrators have all received a lot of traction, personal aggrandizement and financial gain to the tune of Billions of tax $$ for the unfortunate events of 9/11. And in that respect, no matter how sleazy I find Kerik, I must question the Judge's comments in sentencing him.

He should of been thinking of them when he devised the scheme to line his pockets with unlawful gain. Of all people a cop should know the consequences of committing crimes.

I feel this is all karma related. The energy he put into the universe is returning to him tenfold and with a zealous revengance.

Makes you kinda' wonder how many innocent men and women are behind bars because he lied during a criminal investigation.

How many innocent men and women are behind bars because he planted evidence.

Criminals seldom get catch the first time they committ a crime. This really makes me think about the type of person this Kerik really is.

What other heinous crimes did he committ and was not caught?

Convicted of "Lying to the Whitehouse, and filing false tax returns"??? WTF??
The Whitehouse lies to us, repeatedly, and continuously. The Tax Czar, Timothy Geithner, failed to file and pay his taxes. This is '"not" justice, This is a stark case of "selective punishment." Charlie Rangel has committed multiple violations of the tax codes. He's still being paid by the taxpayers that he's stealing from.

Justice will come.

Kerik sentencing for tax cheating before and at the time he was seeking a cabinet appointment does not deserve mention in a Washington Post column labelled "44: Politics and Policy in Obama's Washington," unless the column also offered an explanation why Obama did not seem to mind that Secretary Geithner was cheating on taxes before and at the time he was seeking a cabinet appointment.

mipost1 allegations like yours during the 50's would have cost people their jobs, their families and possibly their lives. if you have evidence that people in this administration are un-american and are working for un-american intentions express the with references and not inuendo. Also I am curious how you differentiate maoist communist socialist marxist, leninist, etc. For people who are so anti-intellectual it seems to me that you would need quite a bit of skill to make these nuanced differences.

In truth, the tragedy of the current leadership is that it is status quo and that should not frighten you but somehow it seems we are fighting the culture wars of the 60's and 70's and believe the fire next time is the issue of the culture war. Well I ma afraid you are living in the past. The culture war of today is everyone looking for work to support the house, car 2 kids and save for college. Obama's inner soul is no different then yours or mine

You're probably unaware that in the US they have this funny ritual called "trials" where the state has to prove the alleged is guilty.

Guilt or innocence isn't determined by Rush, Glenn Beck or Bill O'Reilly. Shocking as they may sound.

It was only in Aug 2009 that William Jefferson was found guilty. Admittedly, that was 7 months ago which is beyond your memory capacity, but the was is Democrat.

We're still waiting for the trial of Tom DeLay. Let's all hope that happens before Tommy passes away.

I'm not exactly sure what your memory conjures up about various political figures. Fox News reported that Larry Craig was a Democrat when he was caught in the airport restroom doing a tap dance. When Sanford was caught humping the Argentinian tail, Fox reported he was a Democrat; and when Mark Foley was caught hitting on the pages, yes you guessed it, Fox News reported he was a Democrat also.

White guys who blame everything on race are pathetic. Any white guy worrying about affirmative action in this country is weak by nature. That means even with a majority status in the food chain in this country for 200 years and you are still a step behind thats on you as a white male for not maximizing your potential as the majority race all this time here. You have no excuse and no one to blame but yourself. Man up little boy.

Another future felon of America that GWB would have as a cabinet member. But why is Donald Rumsfeld still a free man? He caused the deaths of more American servicemen than any 100 ied's combined. His "on the cheap" philosophy, like purchasing inferior body armor because the contractor lowballed the competition and was a good Republican, caused our service people to be underprotected by the richest military in the history of the world. Not to mention his overall incompetence ("There is no insurgency.") and his obvious enjoyment of his new found celebrity after 9/11. That he even had the nerve to utter the phrase "support the troops" when he was more concerned about the contractors is in itself an obscenity. Lock him up in a room full of mirrors.

I didn't believe or support any of those lies. I heard Colin Powell say in June, the summer before the war that Obama didn't have WMDs. I read a statement made by Cheney months before the start of the war that Hussein wasn't a threat to the US. Others were saying the same thing.
