Biden defends stimulus, calls Washington "broken" (Video)

By Rachel Weiner
Vice President Biden gave a mini media tour to defend the $787 billion stimulus package on its first anniversary -- while saying the country is in "deep trouble."

In a USA Today op-ed, Biden touted jobs created, taxes cut and infrastructure projects started because of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. "The best is yet to come," he added.

We've gotten the act moving ahead of schedule, and most projects are coming in under budget. A tough, independent group of inspectors general is on the lookout for fraud, and we've killed scores of projects that don't pass muster. Your tax dollars are being used wisely and quickly to turn the economy around.

Americans know this downturn isn't over yet -- we have a long way to go before we are over the economic chasm left by the Great Recession. Year Two of the Recovery Act will build on the successes of Year One, continuing to generate jobs while seeding the transformative investments needed to ensure that our economy remains the world's strongest.

On CBS's "The Early Show," Biden said he understood why people were angry. "We get it," he said. But he said the White House was doing better than Congress.

"Washington, right now, is broken. I don't ever recall a time in my career where to get anything done, you needed a supermajority, 60 out of 100 senators."

"I've never seen it this dysfunctional," he said.

Biden also talked about national security, saying he was less worried about a large-scale terrorist attack than a lone bomber.

Too much debating and no action. Just Go! Pick an idea and go with it.

1.Build the largest solar farm in the world.
2.Build the largest wind farm in the world.
3.Give all Americans free generic antibiotics.

Just Go and Debate zero! There is no time left!

I don't know what county these idiots posting these comments live in but the republicans are interested in only one thing, using this country as their own personal cash register. They block and obstruct any relief for the middle class and in 8 years set this county back 100 years.in the 50.s and 60's people who made over 2 million dollars had a tax rate of 91% and now it's 21% and the're still complaining. Obama is not perfect but he is trying to level the playing field.Unfortunatly most people due to the right wing media's propaganda consistently vote against their own best interest. WAKE UP AMERICA!

Joe should have been told, that he can not say that. His people have been in charge since 2006.
The public is not accepting that 'this began in order to crippled the Obama administration'.

Like the rest of the dimwits in the Obama Administration, Joe "5 college deferments" Biden doesn't have anything better to do between now and when he gets his walking papers in 2012. The 2010 elections will be the start of the two part house cleaning when most of the Reid and Peliosi congressional followers land in the unemployment line.

Yes, indeed Washington is broken and this is why:

Michelle Obama spends $447.39 at The Waldorf Astoria for one meal for two people. Then she has the gall to lecture the public that we have to 'give up a piece of the pie to let someone else have a slice.' Say what?

Our country is broken! The Democrats and Republican puppets controlled by the Federal Reserve, have been tearing our country and our way of life apart. Americans are made to believe that The Federal Reserve is a branch of our government, THEY ARE NOT!! They are a central bank that has it's own best interests at heart not those of this country and it's people!! The Fed controls our monetary system, our economy and they own our politicians!!

Obama needs to ignore the lying, mindless. Wait a minute, you cannot be mindless and lying. Oh well, we'll use republican conservatives instead. And use the power of his office to jam through appointments, set policy, embarrass the conservative republicans with the facts, and save this country from the mindless and lying aka conservative republicans.

bored by baseball...has it completely correct!

Biden:
"I don't ever recall a time in my career where to get anything done, you needed a supermajority, 60 out of 100 senators."

Boredbybaseball:
"I do not remember that since the FDR administration we have had a president try to push extremely unpopular socialist legislation through Congress. The Democrats had a golden opportunity to be heroes had they tended to the important business of repairing the economy instead of jamming environmental cap & trade and health care legislation through congress. It was a year completely wasted. (Yeah, Yeah, I know, it's all Bush's fault.)

We the people are going to change things, Mr. Biden, in the 2010 and 2012 elections. And it will be a change we like for a change."

I have to ask you out there. How dumb it Joe Biden? Please tell me.

Mr. Biden is one of the leading criminals in Washington that have for years stolen tax payer dollars. It is time to be blunt and brutally honest. Obama has a lot of nerve talking about jobs saved when so many are without. Balance the budget Obama. Crush...Biden and the rest of the Washington Pork. That is your only chance. You will be out of office so fast...nobody will even remember your name!

If Washington is "broken", then the USA is broken (logically, of course)!
Doesn't it mean the current administration admits its failure? If so, then what's the purpose of the administration continuing business as usual instead of stepping down when the more competent "hopefuls" are longing to serve the country better, not questioning the effectiveness of the "dysfunctional" legislature in particlular and the characteristic democracy in general.
Among all the querries as regards the credibility of the government, "stimulus package" as a Life Support System for the overall economy obviously highlights an effort like a survival mechanism. But, are the deserving ones receiving their fair shares of the dose, or parts of the stimulus incentives vanishing in the "Black Hole"?
Despite claiming credits over "light at the end of the tunnel" optimism thus far, the first priority of the administration has recently been reset on unemployment situation that remains about 10% (15 million). The fear undermines all hopes as to who and how many among them will be employed in foreseeable future after their UIB? What if the concerned department fails to help the job seekers with suitable employments? Doesn't the anticipated situation seem to be more horrible than the Quake scenario?
All in all, what good is the stimulus dose to The Great Recession that can not guarantee essential needs to the voters and taxpayers who are unable to support themselves?
The only Hope stays alive with "The best is yet to come", only if the right persons come to the right places to do the right jobs.

It is called, Invest in America, as opposed to the conservative idea of, Invest in Iraq. The conservatives need to follow all the jobs they sent out of this country under the phony free market, unregulated capitilism. Keep screaming the mindless mantra, socialism, but I would like a regulation requiring CFO's, CEO's and republicans to go with the jobs sent out of this country. The more someone cries the mindless socialism mantra they get sent to those jobs and enjoy all the deregulation they could want.
And, by the way, Roosevelt laid the foundation for America to be the strongest country in the world.

egw7777...so, it's Obama, Pelosi, and all their lies that have placed us in this terrible situation? The previous 8 years have meant nothing. I love that you Republicans get your feathers ruffled when someone suggests that perhaps the precediing 8 years have had some impact on the country's present troubles. Everything, for you, has happened in the last year. I know Bush was a terrible president, but you gotta give him more credit than that!!
Here's an analogy for you -- if a new doctor shows up to care for a patient that has flatlined, do you blame the new doctor and call him bad names simply because the patient isn't doing jumping jacks the very next day. This recovery is going to be long and, yes, expensive. But, we're going to recover from the malpractice committed by Bush/Cheney...eventually.

Biden is right! Washington is broken. It was broken by Obama & his lies & Pelosi & Reid & their lies. You cannot spend you way out of debt. Obama thinks we are no longer a Christian Nation but a Muslim Nation. He has Biden out there giving Obama credit for winning the Iraq War when everybody knows Bush won that War Obama just had to finalize the finishing touches. Bush had already layed out the dates of soldiers coming home Obama did not do that. I have always known Biden was a little feisty & turned things around to his advantage but Obama & his people really did a good job on convincing him of this insane lie. Then Obama still keeps blaming Bush for Obama's mistakes & when it comes to the wins he tries to take credit for them by putting Biden out their has his mouth piece. Biden was not even scheduled to be on the Sunday morning talk shows until Obama & his staff got wind of Cheney was going to be on ABC This Week. Now that is sad & sort of chicken.

How does Biden have the guts to say that the White House gets it but congress is broken? The fault is shared by the POTUS crowd as the primary culprits, and the sCongress. Biden and The President continue to blame everyone else for the problems when,in fact, they start with them. Nothing but lies come from the White House. The best is today, when Obama announced that the stimulus bill saved 2 million jobs. This statement does nothing to help all of those who lost jobs. It is a fact that most of the "saved jobs" include government employees. The bill was to stimulate employers to hire not to continue the pork.

Senator Joe Biden is a good example of what and who is broken in Washington D.C.
Biden lives in the credit card capital of the USA and got the majority of his campaign money from the credit card companies, which is why he opposed REAL credit card reform. People like Biden are just career criminals who steal everything from the taxpayer (people) to serve their own self interest rather than ever doing something to benefit the people.
