Cheney discharged from hospital after heart attack

By Michael D. Shear
Former vice president Richard B. Cheney, who suffered a mild heart attack Monday, was discharged Wednesday from George Washington University Hospital, a spokesman said.

"Former Vice President Cheney is feeling good this morning and was discharged from GWU Hospital," spokesman Peter Long said in a statement. "He will resume his normal schedule shortly."

Lab tests at George Washington University Hospital revealed the heart attack, Cheney's fifth. Cheney, 69, has had heart trouble much of his adult life, suffering his first heart attack at 37.

It's pretty obvious from the vitriolic posts here that WaPo doesn't enforce its posting rules.

The comments, however, are revealing. They tell us much more about the posters than they do about Dick Cheney.

Time to shut up and retire Cheney, isn't it bad enough you and that obnoxious, greedy, conniving turd Bush destroyed America? now shut up and sit down already, you did enough damage to our country.

hisroc,

Kennedy fought doggedly his entire life for the rights of and health coverage for children, minorities, the poor and the middle class; Cheney dedicated his two terms in office to deception, mass murder, torture and unchecked executive power. Kennedy's SCHIP alone helped millions of children, whereas the war Cheney lied us into killed 4,000 American servicemen and -women and slaughtered more than 100,000 Iraqi men, women and children.

Save us your hypocritical whining. The war criminal so many cowardly neocons shamelessly defend even to this day made a shambles of the Constitution and America's bedrock principles of honor and decency. He deserves nothing--NOTHING--other than total disgust and contempt, period. And a trip to the Hague to answer for his crimes, of course.

Interesting comments, here. Where are all the left-wingers who cried "foul" when hateful comments were posted about Ted Kennedy after his death.

Oh, I see. It's okay to hate those who are "wrong" but it is mean and nasty to be disrespectful to those who are "right." Uh-huh.

O.K. he is fine.

Now, can we freeze his bank accounts and his families and start inevstigation on WMD in Iraq and charge him according to law?

This latest episode - a "mild" heart attack, in a long line of heart problems (this was his fifth heart attack) that began when he was only 37 years old, tells me that this man, knowing he was not of sound health, should never have considered himself vice-presidential material - ironically, the proverbial heartbeat away from the presidency.

Maybe Cheney's "heart attack" was just an excuse to hide from the press in an undisclosed location after Newsweek's revelation this weekend that he lied about torture being effective: Remember the torture memos Cheney wanted released because they'd show that torturing Abu Zubaydah led to the capture of two other terrorists? Well...

"[A] just-released report by the Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility into the lawyers who approved the CIA’s interrogation program could prove awkward for Cheney and his supporters. The report provides new information about the contents of one of the never released agency memos, concluding that it significantly misstated the timing of the capture of one Al Qaeda suspect in order to make a claim that seems to have been patently false.

"...One key claim in the agency memo was that the use of the CIA’s enhanced interrogations of Zubaydah led to the capture of suspected “dirty bomb’ plotter Jose Padilla. 'Abu Zubaydah provided significant information on two operatives, Jose Padilla and Binyam Mohammed, who planned to build and detonate a ‘dirty bomb’ in the Washington DC area,' the CIA memo stated, according to the OPR report. 'Zubaydah’s reporting led to the arrest of Padilla on his arrival in Chicago in May 2003 [sic].'

"But as the Justice report points out, this was wrong. 'In fact, Padilla was arrested in May 2002, not 2003 ... The information "[leading] to the arrest of Padilla" could not have been obtained through the authorized use of EITs.' (The use of enhanced interrogations was not authorized until Aug. 1, 2002 and Zubaydah was not waterboarded until later that month.) 'Yet Bradbury relied upon this plainly inaccurate information' in two OLC memos that contained direct citations from the CIA Effectiveness Memo about the interrogations of Zubaydah, the Justice report states."

So Padilla was arrested before the torutre even began. Oops.

As for Terrorist #2?

"In essence, the CIA insisted that the waterboarding of Abu Zubaydah 'provided significant information on two operatives, Jose Padilla and Binyam Mohammed, who planned to build and detonate a 'dirty bomb' in the Washington DC area.' As anyone who's followed the case knows, charges against Mohamed were dropped, he was released from detention and returned to the United Kingdom, where the Court of Appeal found that he had been treated to 'cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment by the United States authorities.'"

Heart attack, or just a really bad case of heartburn now that he's been shown to be a liar yet again? Ya gotta wonder...

Dick received excellent health care from a government run, or as tea party nuts would say, “Socialist” health care system. Yes, the federal government does negotiate with private insures, but it is a government operated system with a private component. Forty million uninsured Americans would love to have his governmental health care. Have you ever gone to a government employment web site and noticed how they brag about how great their health care is? France was recently named the best nation on the planet to live in, and a big part of that assessment was their world class health care system, which is a single payer, government system. It was just reported yesterday that in 2009, the US health insurance industry posted a $12 billion profit. So we have a health care system where the insurance companies, who lobby congress, make billions in profit, millions of people can’t get health insurance, those who can risk loosing it by getting too sick, and republicans still think health care in America is great. They revealed their so-called plan this week, and its main component is to limit malpractice cases. Surely there is much more broken in our approach to health care than just the number of medical malpractice claims. If they have all the answers about health care reform, why didn't they advance them when they controlled congress for 6 years?

All of you "public optioners" - get together if you're such a super majority, make it VOLUNTARY: VOLUNTEER half of your paychecks to pay for the people who don't want to pay for health care. You people, along with all the Hollywierd people who want to VOLUNTEER, and all the Congressmen and Senators out there that think this is such a sweet idea, you ALL go on this SUPER COOL BASIC NO FRILLS health insurance policy. No add-ons allowed, now, BASIC is all you get. Nothing extra, comrade!! Half of your paycheck for now, more to come. You asked for it, you can get it! That's the solution. Go for it. Voluntary only. The rest of us knuckle-dragging idiots (there are so few of us out there after all that "don't get it" - right?) get to keep the insurance that we've paid for. Any takers?

Cheney was in office for eight years, of which there were no terrorist attacks on US soil for 7 of them and in the other year, the greatest terrorist attack on US soil occurred. What part of this is incorrect?
