Cheney suffered his fifth heart attack, spokesman says

Updated 3:57 p.m.
By Michael D. Shear
Former vice president Richard B. Cheney suffered a mild heart attack Monday, his fifth, a spokesman said Tuesday.

Cheney, 69, went to George Washington University Hospital after suffering chest pains, Peter Long said in a statement.

"Lab testing revealed evidence of a mild heart attack. He underwent a stress test and a heart catheterization," Long said. "He is feeling good and is expected to be discharged in the next day or two."

Cheney was President George W. Bush's vice president, serving from 2001 to 2009. The Wyoming native has had heart trouble through much of his adult life, sustaining his first heart attack at the age of 37.

Bush spoke with Cheney by telephone Tuesday afternoon, a Bush aide in Dallas told the Associated Press.

Glazer68 is incorrect. Coulter (aka, "It") is not "subhuman". One definition of subhuman is "near human". This is offensive and incorrect. It is a monster, a nauseating, pile of organic matter. Yes, It ingests, excretes, uses energy, and can reproduce (yeeesh). It even speaks. I am fairly confident It is a life form, I will grant that possibility. But human? No. NO.

How can a man who has no heart have a heart attack? He had it removed in the 1960's so that he could avoid military service. Or was it his spine? In any case, one has to wonder if he paid out of pocket for his healthcare treatments or if "Obamacare" saved his miserable carcass---again!

Love the comment by righties talking about the "compassionate" left being so mean to Tricky Dick. We are about responsibility... and when you wreck the country like Cheney did and show utter contempt for the constituion and throw around the military like they are play toys after you use 5 deferments to get out of Vietnam, a war he supported...

Heck with Cheney. I am surprised they could find a heart after what he has doone to this country. If he dies, maybe Halibuton will bury the traitor in Dubui.

Right wingers epitomize what Cheney is all about: himself. Selfish, stupid, and most of all greedy.

So, if you geniuses don't like the "leftist" comments, as Cheney would say, "Go F yourself!".

I have as much respect for Cheney as I have for Hitler. Both were a couple of control freaks, full of narcisstic BS for themselves.

Cheney bears so much responsibility for the thousands of our military killed in his stupid wars. The fat, bald instigator needs to recover so somebody can beat the s__t out of him. Hopefully, the piece of crap never gets out of the hospital alive.

"Such hatful things being said by the oh so companionate left."

No worse than what many oh the rabid right offered up at Sen. Edward Kennedy's passing last year. But whereas Kennedy fought doggedly his entire life for the rights of and health coverage for children, minorities, the poor and the middle class, Cheney dedicated his two terms in office to deception, mass murder, torture and unlimited executive power. Kennedy's SCHIP alone helped millions of children, whereas the war Cheney lied us into killed 4,000 American servicemen and -women and slaughtered more than 100,000 Iraqi men, women and children.

Save us your hypocritical whining about the "compassionate left." It was the "compassionate conservative" war criminal you shamelessly support who made a shambles of the Constitution and America's bedrock principles of honor and decency. He deserves nothing--NOTHING--other than total disgust and contempt, period.

fbutler1,

All kidding aside, it would be a profound insult to our honored war dead to inter this war criminal in the hallowed grounds of Arlington. No, the only fitting final resting place for Herr Cheney would be in an unmarked grave in an Iraqi desert, where the ghosts of his victims can torment his spirit for all eternity.

Sadly, Cheney survived heart attack #5. But it was eye opening to see how universally hated that piece of excrement is by people from across the political spectrum. He's earned it.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for the big one, heart attack #6.

Pity Cheney and his Party cannot find it in their "hearts" to provide that same healthcare to all Americans, not just the privledged few. I don't like this man, but I'm glad he's okay.

Maybe Cheney's "heart attack" was just an excuse to hide from the press in an undisclosed after Newsweek's revelation this weekend that he lied about torture being effective: Remember the torture memos Cheney wanted released because they'd show that torturing Abu Zubaydah led to the capture of two other terrorists? Well...

"[A] just-released report by the Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility into the lawyers who approved the CIA’s interrogation program could prove awkward for Cheney and his supporters. The report provides new information about the contents of one of the never released agency memos, concluding that it significantly misstated the timing of the capture of one Al Qaeda suspect in order to make a claim that seems to have been patently false.

"...One key claim in the agency memo was that the use of the CIA’s enhanced interrogations of Zubaydah led to the capture of suspected “dirty bomb’ plotter Jose Padilla. 'Abu Zubaydah provided significant information on two operatives, Jose Padilla and Binyam Mohammed, who planned to build and detonate a ‘dirty bomb’ in the Washington DC area,' the CIA memo stated, according to the OPR report. 'Zubaydah’s reporting led to the arrest of Padilla on his arrival in Chicago in May 2003 [sic].'

"But as the Justice report points out, this was wrong. 'In fact, Padilla was arrested in May 2002, not 2003 ... The information "[leading] to the arrest of Padilla" could not have been obtained through the authorized use of EITs.' (The use of enhanced interrogations was not authorized until Aug. 1, 2002 and Zubaydah was not waterboarded until later that month.) 'Yet Bradbury relied upon this plainly inaccurate information' in two OLC memos that contained direct citations from the CIA Effectiveness Memo about the interrogations of Zubaydah, the Justice report states."

So Padilla was arrested before the torutre even began. Oops.

As for Terrorist #2?

"In essence, the CIA insisted that the waterboarding of Abu Zubaydah 'provided significant information on two operatives, Jose Padilla and Binyam Mohammed, who planned to build and detonate a 'dirty bomb' in the Washington DC area.' As anyone who's followed the case knows, charges against Mohamed were dropped, he was released from detention and returned to the United Kingdom, where the Court of Appeal found that he had been treated to 'cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment by the United States authorities.'"

Heart attack, or just a really bad case of heartburn now that he's been shown to be a liar yet again? Ya gotta wonder...

USA has health care so good Top Canadian come here for medical treament. How about that democrats?

Newfoundland Premier Defends Decision to Seek Private Health Care in the United States

An unapologetic Danny Williams says he was aware his trip to the United States for heart surgery earlier this month would spark outcry, but he concluded his personal health trumped any public fallout over the controversial decision.

In an interview with The Canadian Press, Williams said he went to Miami to have a "minimally invasive" surgery for an ailment first detected nearly a year ago, based on the advice of his doctors.

"This was my heart, my choice and my health," Williams said late Monday from his condominium in Sarasota, Fla.

"I did not sign away my right to get the best possible health care for myself when I entered politics."

I feel so bad for Cheney. He has a cushy private room, special food etc.

I had a "Minor Heart Attack" two years ago. I went to the emergency room where the insurance company denied me admission. I was given an aspirin and a beta'blocker (each at $10.00 apiece) and after eight hours was sent home.

The emergency room called me back AFTER I got home to tell me my blood work showed I had a minor heart attack.

The MD called the insurance company for pre-existing authorization for admission.

DENIED. They insist I have outpatient follow up with a cardiologist (THAT TOOK THREE weeks to set up, then another week to have the Stress test etc). While having the stress test - I HAD ANOTHER heart attack.

Was shipped to the hospital where I was admitted and had bypass surgery.

Don't ya know the insurance company tried to deny the ADMISSION AND SURGERY as a pre-existing condition - that being the fact that I was in the ER for my chest pain and treated>

My hospital care was exceptional as fitting the worlds best heatlhcare.

MY INSURANCE COMPANY HAS STILL NOT PAID THE BILL.

===============================
That might make sense IF Iraq factored into 911 and/or we have ever been attacked by Iraq. You have convinced yourself that Iraq was a just War. The country believes otherwise! What Cheney did do is unleash many more terrorist with Abu Grabe and Gitmo. They also just release the memos that Cheney said would prove that he was right about waterboarding. Well the memos actually showed that Cheney was wrong. He claimed that waterboarding allowed them to get information on Jose Pidillo. The problem is Jose was caught a YEAR BEFORE they waterboarded the terrorist Cheney claimed gave them the info.

THAT is what cause his heart attack. He has been on TV for a year advocating water boarding and challenging our sitting President.

Now he look like a bigger fool than he already was. I say he should live a long time and suffer the embarrassment of making a fool of himself in the middle of Obama's Administration. He had his chance and he ruined the country on all fronts. It's hard to find something they did right!

Its understandable how Cheney would suffer a heart attack. After Gen Petraus's comments Sunday and the capture of a second Taliban leader in two weeks, Cheney went into apoplectic shock. I surely hope he recovers and is able to attend Obama's second inauguration in 2012. It would be ashame if he missed it.

Dick's heart attacked him. That's in lieu of others who would be disposed to do the same. It is generally called an infarct. That's where a lack of perfusion starves cardiac tissue leading to necrosis. This can be diagnosed by drawing blood and checking for certain enzymes that are released during the event.

There is no question that Dick Cheney is one of the most truly evil people ever to call himself "American."

• Hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi lives lost in the name of "liberating" them as well as more than 4,000 of our finest men and women sacrificed on the profane altar of his sick ideology in a war that never should have been waged.

• The wholesale subverting of American justice on his orders via his underlings such as Yoo, Bybee, Bradbury, Addington, etc.

• The very soul of our country perverted and degraded to mask his personal cowardice and satisfy his sadism in torture factories that would have made Pol Pot or Hermann Goering feel right at home.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, I've never wished a man dead, but I've read many an obituary with a great deal of satisfaction. There will be little mourning among the decent folk in this country once this smear of depravity has been erased from the living.

The only reason to be glad that this butcher is still alive is that it's still not too late for him to repent of his monstrous crimes before he dies. God can forgive even what most of us lesser humans cannot. But I suspect that, like most truly evil people, Cheney will maintain to the bitter end his heinous sins were justified. If so, let him burn. I can think of no one more deserving.

Seems that rhetoric coming from Military/Industrial Complex of Iran is picking up where al-queada left off a few years ago, fighting capitalism with terrorism.

Problem is that Capitalist seek to acquire wealth. Castro is a rich man. Chavez is a millionaire. Most of the Founders of the 1979 Iranian Revolution are rich men. And the heads of Iran's Theocracy impose a pious life onto their subjects while trying to hide money in overseas banks.

I have been a proponent of Commerce without conquest all of my life I guess. Protecting our vital interests overseas seems to be really cost ineffective now opposed to diplomacy. Of course our addiction to oil makes those vital interests more profound doesn't it ?

Little known fact was not broadcast widely the other day. Saudi is pumping more oil to China than the USA now. China's demand is really high this year, are they filling strategic reserves Uncle Dick ?

You know, it's a delusion world but it is what it is, or not. As instability in the Middle East increases inflation, under developed nations suffer the brunt of poverty. As poverty increases instability, more nations are adapt to be exploited as bases for terrorism.

In a perfect world, capitalism and socialism may fight a economic war in which socialist economics would compete with free market principles, the better system to win. Until then, we probably have to spend more money defending our country against radicals who exploit religion, geo-politics or forms of society for their own personal gains. It sucks.

Yeah, I find Dick Cheney to be the single-most disgusting person in American politics (all-time), but c'mon folks, the hatred in these posts are frightening. Of course, this is what the Republicans have turned our country into. Citizen hating citizen, wishing ill on others simply for believing something different than you. I'm willing to bet the overwhelming majority of these posters are white. And you wonder why blacks call whites "Devils?" You people should check yourselves before you wreck yourselves (too late). I'm also willing to bet 99.99% of you call yourselves Christians too. I call you all hypocrites. Dick Cheney has a wife, and children, and grandchildren. And you know what, I'm better than him (and most of you). I don't wish ill on anyone (not Cheney, not Obama, not any of you). Next time, I hope he must avail himself of "Republican healthcare":

He goes to the emergency room and gets to wait for hours to be seen...

by doctors, each not wanting to practice defensive medicine, take his temperature, gives him a placebo and send him home...

with a bill for $200,000 for his emergency room visit...

which his insurance company promptly denies because he didn't call for prior authorization...

and cancels his insurance for both unnecessary use of services and a pre-existing condition...

and suggests he tries government-run health care like Medicare...

which has been privatized by his Republican colleagues who, citing "waste fraud and abuse," have severely cut his benefits, because he doesn't pass the new "means test"...

Actually impeachment extends only to removal from office, but Cheney still could be prosecuted for any crimes he committed. Criminal prosecution is a separate thing from an impeachment. That is why Ford felt the need to pardon Nixon. Nixon did not leave behind his culpability for crimes when he departed the oval office. Obama's decision not to prosecute those who approved and participated in war crimes like torture is a kind of de facto pardon--and it seems likely that Obama's reelection prospects are going to be about the same as were Gerald Ford's.

I despise just about everything in Dick Cheney except for his honest commitment to what he believes he (even if what he believes in is wrong). That said, not all of us DEMS wish him dead or suffering. He is a man with a family and is probably loved by as many as who loathe him. Why we cannot disagree on policy without spewing vitriolic hate is beyond me.

I wish Mr. Cheney a speedy recovery. I am so glad that he can enjoy the world's best medical care plan!

But...

While I would never suggest that any heart attack suffered by anyone serves any good or provides any moral lessons or lifestyle warnings, I do want to remind anyone reading this that Mr. Cheney has been going out of his way in the past few weeks to break traditional ex-office holder etiquette (as a former Vice President) to not only challenge his successors, but also paint them in such a negative light as to give our nation's enemies comfort.

If you don't believe me, ask Gen. Colin Powell.

His appearance at CPAC was a hair's breath short of appalling and probably physically demanding as well. It's like Cheney has been working harder now than he did while in office.

It's a sign that Americans of all stripes STILL recognize oppression, tyrannical behavior, treasonous behavior, self serving greed at the expense of others lives and the lives of our loved ones.

Cheney represents all of this and more to MOST Americans.

Cheney's apologists inability to see that and make the distinction between Dicky-Boy's actions and what it means to be an American is damning.

Hello Dims,

The only way to punish a president or vice president for acts committed while in office is impeachment, and impeachment can occur only while the person is still in office. The only penalty is removal from office.

I don't wish death or discomfort on the man, but I am finding it hard to muster up any compassion on him, either. I suppose I should feel sorry for a man that suffers such poor health ...... but I can't help wondering how much sleep he lost over the massive death toll and injuries in Iraq -- Americans and Iraqis. I wonder how many health problems Cheney had when in office that we weren't told about? He's had heart problems since he was in his 30's, then for eight years, we never heard about any problems. Everything suddenly got better for him? Actually, we didn't hear from him at all for long stretches of time--time that some people thought he was spending in the bunker plotting the destruction of the world, but more likely it was time he was secretly spending in the hospital. Then, after these long stretches of absence, we see him resurface in a wheelchair at Obama's ignauguration. It's almost like in the Soviet days when they (unsuccessfully) tried to hide Brezhnev's failing health.
