Rahm Emanuel apologizes for 'retarded' remark

Updated 4:21 p.m.
By Michael D. Shear
White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has apologized for referring to liberals as "retarded" during a strategy session last summer.

A White House official said Emanuel called Tim Shriver, the CEO of the Special Olympics, last week after his comments were reported in a Wall Street Journal article and prompted Shriver to write him to express "dismay" over Emanuel's word choice.

"Rahm called Tim Shriver Wednesday to apologize and the apology was accepted," a White House aide said. "The White House remains committed to addressing the concerns and needs of Americans living with disabilities and recognizes that derogatory remarks demean us all."

The apology gained new attention just hours after former Alaska governor Sarah Palin posted a scathing critique of Emanuel's comments on her Facebook page and called for President Obama to fire him. Palin's son, Trig, was born with Down Syndrome.

"Just as we'd be appalled if any public figure of Rahm's stature ever used the 'N-word' or other such inappropriate language, Rahm's slur on all God's children with cognitive and developmental disabilities -- and the people who love them -- is unacceptable, and it's heartbreaking," Palin wrote.

Emanuel's comment was reported in a story that recounted a summer strategy session in which liberal groups said they might run ads attacking conservative Democrats for refusing to back Obama's health care plan. His apology was first reported last week by Disability Scoop, an online news organization.

"F---ing retarded," the Journal reported Emanuel as saying during the meeting. A report last August recounted Emanuel as having said "f---ing stupid" at the meeting with liberal Democrats.

Emanuel has a reputation for foul language in private conversations and is known for his love of bare knuckle politics.

The Special Olympics has launched a campaign called "spread the word to end the word," which is aimed at eliminating the use of the word "retard" in reference to people with special needs.

Scott3,,,,,go ahead and puke, you idiot....did anyone notice the look of deep sorrow for his comment that Rahm gave to all of us? ... looked like an idiot savant to me,............right, scott?
PS...duhhhh, who is Tim Shriver, anyway? Sorry, you have to be born prior to 2010 to know that answer.........strange folk make stranger comments.

I find it so ironic that Sarah Palin would complain about Rahm Emanuel's crude comment. Conservatives have complained many times in the past about liberals' oversensitivity and political correctness when a Republican has used a racial slur. Now they are the ones being hypersensitive and politically correct. Mr. Emanuel wasn't directing his remark towards developmentally disabled people. Sarah Palin is wrong; one can't logically compare Mr. Emanuel's remark to calling a person of color the 'N' word.

That idea of Dems attacking Dems was f---ing retarded. The fact that he apologized for it is also f---ing retarded. Rahm was not referring to Sarah Palin's baby or anyone else. Sarah should quit abusing poor little Mathman for her own political gain.

Emanuel is a piece of sh_t. He was speaking to a bunch of pansies or they would have confronted him instead of letting crazy Palin. Obama shows what he is if he lets this piece of crap stay a part of his administration.

A word slipped off Rahm's tongue. Many of us recognized it as offensive, we have grown sufficiently to recognize it. He apologized. What words we do not recognize and for which we do not demand apology interests me as much.

Is there anything offensive in Scalia's "the" mentally ill may not own firearms? (Yes, easily recognized by substituting "the" Jews or "the" Blacks, but we do not presently recognize it, apology unnecessary.)

Emanuel, come on folks, only got it half right. He forgot to include the other side of the aisle. But then again, I think Retards would be a compliment to them as Emanuel knows full well they are a bunch of zeros which is much lower than retarded. As for Palin, most of you got it right - out for the publicity and as usual, 'out to lunch'.

Were these comments made LAST AUGUST? Does this pass as news? Is Palin really trying to create news by using her Downs Syndrome grandchild? Obama once made a remark about Emmanuel that "he cut his middle finger and became mute".

Palin joins Fox and then creates a news story showing her directly challenging the White House! Sounds like vintage Fox News to me.

If memory serves me right Obama made a snyde remark about the Special Olympics" when he was runningn for office. These national socialists, the Emanuel brothers, Axelrod, Sunstein, Pelosi, Reid and the token in nthe Oval Office aim to exterminate the old, the disabled, and the "retarded." @WoofBlitzer, thanks for asking. :) I found an interesting discussion on this here:

I have to agree with the discussion that it sounds like a word you would describe an exotic inanimate object, not a person. I can't tell you exactly why it offends me, but then again, why is "retarded" so offensive when all it means is "stunted". It's probably because of the way people used those words, usually to make fun of others. I just remember being called an "oriental" and then having to hear people spew gibberish at me and then being asked what it means. Or being asked if "orientals" use floss as blindfolds. Seriously, stupid stuff like that from people who can't imagine that I pretty much speak English. I'm American, and I don't belong anywhere else. Anyway, I imagine that is the same reason why "retarded" is so hurtful, even though where I grew up, lots of people used it as slang for "lame". Culture matters, and imposing one's cultural perceptions on others and insisting that they meant to offend is going a little overboard, IMHO. If someone has the sense to apologize for it, instead of getting defensive, I think that's enough. Rahm Emanuel is going to have to answer for his other actions though.

Posted by: apple597 | February 2, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

What Rahm doesn't get, is that his refusal to apologize to the 'liberals' who worked so hard to get Obama elected, is the reason the Dems are going down.

Emanuel is the reason that Obama has nothing but disdain for the progressive base of the party. No progressive in their right mind would ever give money to the DNC again, or work their tails off for Obama, or any other Blue Cross Dem, as long as that man is the Chief-of-Staff.

What a tool.

Rahm Emmanuel is just parroting his boss, Obama and that is the way they must talk in private.

Funny that Emmanuel would phone Shriver when he in fact insulted Sarah Palin. Was that intended to insult her further by ignoring her? So much for the phony bipartisanship babbled by the White House.

What is this confess to Shriver and Special Olympics everytime one of them f...... slips? What a foul bunch of potty mouths in the White House.

Dear Apple 597,
Not to get too far off the subject, but what could possibly be derogatory about the word, Oriental? It just means from the far east, Orient, or exotic and mysterious. I can't find anything derogatory.
Just an Irish Mick wondering.

Time and again Sarah Palin has shown by words and deeds that she is a professional hypocrite. How many times, of the many words written about Rahm Emanuel, have we read about any words written or spoken by him, (much less in a private meeting)where the reporter has even once accused Mr. Emanuel of a bigoted form of behavior? The landscape of truth is clear and self-evident on this issue. Getting facts before forming conclusions doesn't seem to matter to many writing these comments, and and makes their defense of Ms. Palin predictable, and their loose condemnation of Mr Emanuel a certainty. Plato, said it best, "Wise men talk because they have something to say, fools, because they have to say something."

Rahm got it all wrong. He meant to call Palin a retard.

Posted by: B-rod | February 2, 2010 5:56 PM | Report abuse

Growing up, I never thought of the word "retarded" as referring to a person who is mentally disabled. I thought it referred to something that was stunted "retarded growth" or to someone that justs acts lame. Only in the last few years does it seem to me that the disabled community has claimed that word as something that people have used to referred to them disparagingly. I'm sure it happens a lot, but I will guess that this is a cultural thing too. Not long ago, the word "idiot" also referred to people with mental disabilities. Now it's okay for someone to call another an "idiot" but not "retarded". Honestly, it still doesn't sound like a word that is derogatory to me, but because I know that it now has a derogatory connotation, I avoid using it, but sometimes I slip. It happens. Just like older folks that keep saying "Oriental", it offends me deeply but I don't think they know how terrible it sounds, and I wouldn't be jumping all over them for it. I personally don't think we should jump all over Rahm Emmanuel either. I know plenty of conservatives and they are the most un-PC people I know, so as far as I'm concerned, an apology is more than what you'd get from most of them. If we want to criticize Emmanuel, I want to hear specifics about his choices, not the same partisan BS.

Shouting and swearing are not signs of a powerful man. Getting the job done is a pretty good indicator or a powerful man. Health care did not get done - by a lot.

But as for classifying "Retarded" as the "R" word holy Christ! It's an actual condition signifying mental disability which may or may not be an apt description. If we are to cut every word that may have any offense to anybody we'll soon be talking like little Pollyanna. Oh I'm sorry. I didn't mean to offend Pollyanna. I should say the "P" word, but then we might confuse that with Palin and that would be "Fing" "R"

According to this article, "Rahm Emanuel has apologized for referring to liberals as 'retarded'".

Thank God he's now done the decent thing and apologized. Any group of people would deserve similar contrition if maliciously and baselessly compared to liberals.

Mr. Emanuel, you've once again demonstrated your contempt for those you serve. In a position such as yours, you do NOT have the right to make such statements no matter how clever you think they sound. I'm offended and will remain so, and I'm also offended by your very hollow apology. Your style of heavy handed throtle collaring of oponents needs to cease if the Administration is to gain traction going forward. My first thought was to label Rahm as being the one who is retarded but that is a term with which noone should be saddled.

Rahm is just stupid and thoughless as was his boss Barack when he made a similar remark last March ("It's the second time a high-ranking White House official has apologized to Shriver; President Obama himself did so after making a Special Olympics crack on The Tonight Show back in March.")

The dignified and thoughtful thing would be for both of them to resign and leave the country of which neither seems to be proud. Yes, I served for eight years to defend our freedoms but I did not serve to enable these two turkeys to make such remarks. If they decide to remain, which I am sure they will, then we as the electorate must take steps in the 2012 election to ensure that there is a new administration, one which cares about our country and the 300,000,000+ people who are proud of it.

"President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno ..... attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.

....the president talked about how he's gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.

He bowled a 129, the president said.

"That's very good, Mr. President," Leno said sarcastically.

It's "like the Special Olympics or something," the president said."

So Rahm and Obama both talk out of both sides of their least, they are being called on it, even though if similar remarks had been made by Conservatives, it would have been "watch out" ; liberal media would have had a field day.

And, why is Emanual given a pass for his constant use of obscenities. An occasional emotional outburst is one thing; but why do we accept that a Chief of Staff does not have to be somewhat dignified, professional, and articulate without sinking to the gutter?

We should have fired Bush when he flipped the bird. No, we should have fired Cheney when he dropped the f-bomb on Sen. Leahy.

Sarah prays for these events to occur. It gives her another chance to grab the microphone. To put head out there and proclaim how wonderful and self righteous she and her All-Alaskan family are. And why can't we be wonderful, God fearing, loving families, like she thinks she has.

Ah, get over it. It's all part of the political game. Both sides showing faux moral indignation. Now that's retarded.

Fact is the term "retarded" has been applied arbitarily by society to a medical condition. It, in of itself, is not a scientific term. Nor is it owned by anyone. It has now become part of the new vernacular referring to something quite different. So what?

If you don't like the word, don't use. Add this issue to all the others on the list about flag pins and birth certificates and Michelle finally being proud to be an American and Bill Ayers and goddamn America and Michelle's sleaveless dresses and how their daughter dresses, well it just never ends, does it???

Retard, retarded? Look, of all there is to know in the universe, no one knows that much, meaning we're all functioning on different levels of ignorance. Or, we are all retarded about more of what we should know than what we shouldn't know. If the truth about our own severe ignorance about most matters results in fear or denial of a few words that prove our ignorance, we are in a deeper hole than a few words can describe. Instead of watching the average six-hours-daily of TV, I suggest we start reading the greatest literature and research papers, six-hours-daily, then this civilization might leave its current addition to boredom, and leave the fear of inappropriate and poorly defined words and get back to some active-first-person-do-it-yourself-positive-creative behavior! And leave the word-fear-mongers where they belong, in the negative silence of their own minds...

Liberal Democrat here. Emanuel did act stupidly. He frequently acts stupidly. One of the first signs of trouble in the Obama administration was his willingness to embrace people such as Emanuel who are not gentlemen or -women.

Throughout history, there have been people who were effective and respected, who brought about change without resorting to insults, nasty threats, and f-bombs. There have been people who led by example. I don't see many such people in any part of the political spectrum now, and it scares and saddens me.

I'd like to throw a bit of a curve: Can any of you (regardless of political leanings) name anyone they truly believe to have the requisite courage, intelligence, creativity, and integrity (regardless of political leanings or experience) to do the job of President well and stand up to the scrutiny? Do these people really exist, or is every great person really a tin god with the usual moral failings?

Further, even a stopped clock is right twice a day, and so Palin has hit this situation dead on for a change: Emanuel is an odious, caustic toad sprung from the fetid depths of Cook County. Sarah Palin Made Jokes About Her “Retarded” Baby

By Mark Lorenz on October 29th, 2009

I like Levi Johnston. His very existence in the Sarah Palin debacle is the definition of comedy. Like, Sarah Palin poses for pictures and meanders on about values, then Levi says something that undermines her, then Sarah releases an indignant press release, and then it continues. It’s like watching Looney Tunes, the Wasilla Version. WHY I OUGHTTA!

Oh, and Sarah Palin made jokes about her baby.

Levi Johnston, who made waves with the announcement that he was going to pose for Playgirl, is continuing to be a very hilarious thorn in Sarah Palin’s side. Every time she pretends to be holier than thou, which takes up many hours in the day, Levi comes and opens his mouth. Such as today on CBS’ Early Show, where he told reporters that Sarah Palin would periodically call Trig, her baby with Downs Syndrome, her, “retarded baby.” Palin came back with a press release, of course, because she has a tenuous grasp on the English language. As would anyone who named a disadvantaged child “Trig”. ...

Come on conservatives, the woman names her child after a horse. Doesn't that tell you something?

And the Wall Street Journal of all places. I'd expect this from the Drudge Report, or the Globe, but this is news worthy stuff of the well heeled Wall Street Journal.

When does the Journal start putting color pictures of topless women on the front page? Or have they already?

Should this surprise anyone? Didn't Obama use the "R" word on Jay Leno? I'm also not surprised that the "liberals" on this site have rushed in to attack Palin in support of Emanuel. It's just one more reason the independents among us increasingly look down upon the Obama administration, the Dems, libs, and so-called progressives. They hold Repubs and conservatives up to a standard they could never hope to live up to, then excuse themselves for their own indiscretions. Wonder what they'd have said if a conservative pundit had remarked of Obama during the State of the Union address that "I forgot he was black"? Laughable, the lot of you!

Emanuel apologizes for 'retarded' remark

By Michael D. Shear

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has apologized for referring to liberals as "retarded" during a strategy session last summer.

Rahm (creme) Emanuel

Why did it take 6 months to apologize for this. It appears that the Democrat party only reacts to its own forms of racism when it is publically called into question.

What about O'Bama and that he still has not apologized to all Americans by/for:
1) his speech in Germany (campaign-trail speech!) about not looking like all the others on the dollar bills'';

2) campaign-trail comments calling Americans ''poor white Americans clinging to guns and religion'';

3) the ''teachable moment'' incident where O'Bama was himself the racist with his black Harvard counterpart, and not the Massachusset's police officer(s)

O'Bama the Divider, the Unwise, the Apologizer, the wrightist.

It does raise some questions. What happens now to all those people who like to use the word "libtard" or however you spell it? Will they need to apologize?
And why does Sarah refer to that dad in Massachusetts as a "patriot"? Is that because he´s from Massachusetts, or has a disabled child, or, oh yes, because he´s a Palin supporter? (I take it only Palin people or their like are patriots.) Can we get back to important issues, like the budget?

Posted by: jvlem | February 2, 2010 1:28 PM | Report abuse

Actually, I plan to use whatever words I want to us. The last time I looked, there were no Nazi flags flying outside my window. If I offend someone, then that person needs to ask himself or herself if his or her being offended is important to the rest of the world. I'd venture to say it isn't. I am so sick and tired of people who are offended about everything. I grew up in West Texas and I didn't play football! Hey, guess what? I was quite often "offended" by comments. Guess what you do? YOU GET OVER IT!!!

Posted by: georges2 | February 2, 2010 1:25 PM | Report abuse

Not to say that this wasn't offensive but I think it's important to point out the difference between "mental retardation" and "retarded". Both carry meanings that can be correlated... but the relationship is not always direct. It is possible to be "retarded" without suffering from "mental retardation".

Main Entry: re·tard·ed
Pronunciation: \ri-ˈtär-dəd\
Function: adjective
Date: 1895

sometimes offensive : slow or limited in intellectual or emotional development or academic progress

Main Entry: mental retardation
Function: noun
Date: 1914

: subaverage intellectual ability equivalent to or less than an IQ of 70 that is accompanied by significant deficits in abilities (as in communication or self-care) necessary for independent daily functioning, is present from birth or infancy, and is manifested especially by delayed or abnormal development, by learning difficulties, and by problems in social adjustment

It was a stupid thing to say. Maybe, retarded?
