Julianna Smoot announced as White House social secretary

By Anne E. Kornblut
President Obama named former fundraiser Julianna Smoot as the next social secretary on Saturday, quickly filling the position after the announcement by Desiree Rogers that she is on her way out.

"Julianna shares our commitment to creating an inclusive, dynamic and culturally vibrant White House, and Michelle and I are pleased to have her join our team," Obama said in a statement.

Smoot said she is "humbled and excited to take on the role of White House Social Secretary and support the Obama administration in a different capacity." She has been at the U.S. Trade Representative's office.

Smoot served as Obama's finance director in the 2008 campaign, helping engineer his record-breaking fundraising, particularly on the Internet.

Smoot is closely tied to Norman Hsu, who just got a 24 year sentence for campaign finance crimes. Should she be in charge of access to the White House?

biggest contribution Hsu ever gave was to Smoot when she was finance chair at DSCC in 2005:

NEW YORK, NY 10016
primary 06/09/05

biggest contribution ever given by a guy in jail for 24 years for campaign finance crimes and it was given to the DSCC when Smoot was finance chair. Still no msm reporting on this.

Smoot apparently has little problem with associating with unsavory characters, such as now-imprisoned Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu. The two were quite close, has mutual “respect” for each other as Hsu served as one of Smoot’s “most reliable donors from her tenure as finance chair for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.” Smoot aggressively pursued Hsu on behalf of the Obama campaign, as noted by the 2007 WaPo “$75 Million Dollar Woman” piece

Whew! You scared me, Rogers out, Smoot in: I thought this was a Redskin story, or something else important.

Obama readily throws one of his long-term friends under the bus when it becomes politically expedient to do so. This guy could not lead an alcoholic to a bar.

Mishap my lily white butt. Rogers was checking the DNC donor database when she allowed the Salahi's in. Look at that picture again... the one where Mikhail is shaking hands with Barry. He knows her. The only reason they got caught is because the Obamas didn't know that the Washington Post reporter who was there knew the Salahis and knew they weren't invited. This whole thing stinks to high heaven. Anyone got the change the wanted yet? Be careful what you wish for.

Are the Obamas truly that inept?

Such venom for someone who works in public service. I love the internet, it allows cowards and lowlifes to throw insults behind the computer screen.
How about taking the high road and saying, "thanks for your service to the country, we wish you luck in your new endeavors"

One mishap happened on her watch, and it was probably more of a 'security' issue than a protocol issue.

Keep your comments to addressing the issues and civil..

They should have canvassed from within, say, from the Dept. of Agriculture, Pork/Beef Division.

From the fashion mogul, ultra sleek and high polished Desiree Rogers to a "common folk" person like Julianna Smoot. Now that's from one extreme to the other, but maybe that's whats needed. I thought they would promote someone from within. Very interesting choice.

In an interview with CNN on Friday, Rogers said she was leaving voluntarily and that her decision was unrelated to the fallout over the security breach.

"It has nothing to do with that," she said. "It's Secret Service's job to handle security. Not the Social Secretary's office."

yea right. being the social secretary of the president must have gotten too boring for this friggin bimbo, huh? she only embarrassed this country for the umpteenth time.

bye bye desiree rogers.. don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you!

I wonder how many times gay hooker, Jeff Gannon eluded security when he stayed at the White House during the Bush years.

If anyone every heard Desiree Rogers speak in public, you would understand why the White House had no interest in allowing her to testify in front of Congress and TV cameras. Suffice to say she would have come across as so inarticulate and clueless that the average listener would have questioned President Obama’s competence for ever appointing her to any position of trust in his administration.

He did the right thing not letting her near a TV camera with a speaking part.

Great choice. It isn't every administration that has a call girl and porn starlet as a social secretary. Her skills should be very much in demand in this administration. Now, there will really be interest in crashing the White House state dinner!

Anyone have a clue as to the status of her relationship to Howard Dean vs. Rahm "Marking Dog" Emanuel?
