Michelle Obama on 'Today': I understand criticism of my husband (Video)

In an interview with Matt Lauer on the "Today" show Wednesday morning, first lady Michelle Obama said she understood the harsh criticisms being leveled at her husband.

"It's part of the job," she said. "This has been a tough year for the nation -- folks out of work, two wars. We have an economy that we pulled from the brink of depression. Folks, you know, they're looking for work. They're losing their homes. I mean, so Americans are rightfully frustrated. And the person in charge is the person folks look to."

Obama said that since her husband became president, the couple has developed "much more respect" for their predecessors, as "only they and their families understand the pressure of this job." She added that she teases her husband about his graying hair.

Later, asked about the changing mood of the country, Obama added, "Barack warned us about this over the course of the campaign. I mean, he talked a lot about hope, but he said that hope -- with that comes compromise and sacrifice. And it's painful, and it takes time. And it's true, and we're sort of feeling the pain of that."

Obama also said she was surprised by the continuing media fascination with the first couple. "I don't think I'm that interesting," she said. "I don't think my husband is that interesting."

You know.. I feel sorry for her. I am sure it was a real eye opener going into the WH and suddenly realizing.. oopps we have really stepped in it.... I am sure that the constant critisim and lack of privacy is wearing on them.

However, he asked for the job and he got it. Now he spends his time trying to enact his socialist policies... those learned from his "community organizer days" working for ACORN. So whe he isn't trying to spend the country into the deepest recession in history he spends it bashing all things Bush and the GOP. He never finds fault in himself except to say maybe he didn't communicate as well as he should have.

Here's a tip... you spend ALL of your time trying to communicate and NONE of it doing actual work.. try that for a change... or better yet... do nothing.. it will be 10x's better than what you are doing now. Take a 3 year vacation.

All that baloney above shouted at us by Teabaggers and Fox News will not change the facts, which are that he saved the world banking system and staved off a second Great Depression.

I can tell from the handful of negative posts that the right wing GOP hate machine already has its bash Michelle talking points in full operation.

Their rants at Obama and Michelle will never cover their embarrassment at having voted for Cheney and Shrub TWICE. You guys are as responsible for the state of the country, including this massive debt, because you blindly ignored their criminality which was right in front of your face.

Obama is not a Muslim, has not 'apologized' for America, is not a socialist, is not 'secretly' hoping America fails, and he is certainly not a racist.

All that baloney above shouted at us by Teabaggers and Fox News will not change the facts, which are that he saved the world banking system and staved off a second Great Depression.

Every other western capitalist democracy gives its citizens universal health care - we have just been too long the doormats for big corporations.

And this talking point about how much the first lady has as a budget - you never criticized Laura Bush for it. Where was your outrage then?

suderrooster, granted Obama may have inherited a mess, most presidents do in one way or another, but nonethless, just how long before he takes ownership of his presidency and his actions? What's the Bush cutoff for you Obama worshipers? Got a date you like? I just hope that Obama doesn't mind being bashed forever by the person that takes over the presidency from him. Out of control spending, campaign lies that never come to pass, looking and acting weak in the eyes of our enemies and the list goes on. I hope the next president keeps score as well as Obama is. Hell what do we need him for if all we are going to do is blame Bush. Can't we save his saler, Michelle's 1.3 million in hired help so that she can get out of bed and look good in front of a camera? So we can quit providing security for her Mother to babysit? So we can get rid of the double digit czars that obviously havent' a clue. Let's just put up a cardboard picture of Bush, bash it all day and well, we pretty much have Obama's agenda. What do we need him for? No new ideas there. Spend spend spend. Take away our freedoms. Spread big government. Protect terrorists. Proclaim the US a Muslim country. Boy I sure hope you people out there that slobbered at the thought of a black president are happy. But then he is bi-racial, not black and he's just a kid trying to do a grownups job. Please let 3 years fly by, please.

What a joke, just plain lil' ole' me with a million dollars worth of your hard earned tax dollars a year just to get me out of bed and in front of a camera. Doesn't sound like common folk as she tries to pass herself off as. What a joke her and her lying husband are. They likely drink vintage wine out of expensive shoes they toss in the hall for the hired help to pick up and throw away. She's just as cunning and deceitful has her husband. Just show business here.

Michelle's derision of the Bush administration lost her points in my mind. She had, I thought, become more gentile and graceful, perhaps this was only a facade, what a disappointment.

Classy people don't make derisive gestures toward others in public, that's tacky and tasteless.

Americans need to realize they need to step up to the plate and stop allowing our elected officials to play the "politics"as usual game...which will produce the same results as the past. For those who say that President Obama is so terrible!!! I can't help but wonder what they call the ones who got us into this mess?? It didn't happen overnight and will not go away in that manner .

If Obama is so connected to the "folks," then he will step back from the his determination to pass the "historical yet misguided" health care abomination.

Obama cares NOTHING for Americans - who understand this - and THIS is the reason for his harsh criticism.

He is unprepared to sit in a cubicle, much less to lead a nation.

The FLOTUS, Michelle Obama, is intelligent and understands the criticism is not personal; but when people are frustrated, out of work and have their backs against the wall, they want answers. And the 'messenger' whomever that is in the White House, gets a ear full.

That said, I just heard the president addressing Senate Democrats, during which he outlined what had to be done. A tough first quarter, indeed for the first family. The stress on the president is evident. Nevertheless, I am confident Mr. Obama is prepared to do what has to be done to put the American economy back where it should be.

Like so many others I am in line to mark that recovery with cheers. And of course, it starts with putting us all back to work in 'real' jobs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4faMkBfQ49o
