Obama urges preparation in advance of possible tsunami

President Obama spoke Saturday about the earthquake in Chile and American tsunami preparations. His full statement follows:

Good morning, everybody. Earlier today, a devastating earthquake struck the nation of Chile, affecting millions of people. This catastrophic event was followed by multiple aftershocks, and has prompted tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean. Earlier today, I was briefed by my national security team on the steps that we're taking to protect our own people, and to stand with our Chilean friends.

Early indications are that hundreds of lives have been lost in Chile, and the damage is severe. On behalf of the American people, Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to the Chilean people. The United States stands ready to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts, and we have resources that are positioned to deploy should the Chilean government ask for our help. Chile is a close friend and partner of the United States, and I've reached out to President Bachelet to let her know that we will be there for her should the Chilean people need assistance, and our hearts go out to the families who may have lost loved ones.

We're also preparing for a tsunami that could reach American shores later today, particularly in Hawaii, American Samoa, and Guam. A tsunami warning is in place, and people have been alerted to evacuate coastal areas. I urge citizens to listen closely to the instructions of local officials, who will have the full support of the federal government as they prepare for a potential tsunami, and recover from any damage that may be caused.

I also urge our citizens along the West Coast to be prepared as well, as there may be dangerous waves and currents throughout the day. Again, the most important thing that you can do is to carefully heed the instructions of your state and local officials.

Once again, we've been reminded of the awful devastation that can come at a moment's notice. We can't control nature, but we can and must be prepared for disaster when it strikes. In the hours ahead, we'll continue to take every step possible to prepare our shores and protect our citizens. And we will stand with the people of Chile as they recovery from this terrible tragedy.

Thank you very much, everybody.

Balancing the Budget on the back of the poor 101

The cost of living given to Social Security recipients for 2008 was 5.9% which was added to their 2009 checks. During 2009, overall consumer prices rose 2.7%. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy categories, rose 1.8% for the 12 months ending December 2009, matching the 1.8% rise in core inflation in 2008. Energy costs for the 12 months ending in December 2009 rose 18.2% led by the higher gasoline costs which increased 63.5% (Associated Press 1/16/10).

Reardon’s letter is a fairy tale [Letter Village News, 2/11/10]. Some Social Security recipients can only afford to eat one or two meals a day but stimulus funding, approved by President Obama in 2009 disgustingly paid CEO’s million dollar bonuses.

The Tea Party movement is not hysteria; it is a huge Advertisement

Fallbrook Unified Methodist (K-1) movement of Americans (1.5 million at Washington DC’s Tea Party) who want their country back and are fed up with those Congress and the President.

Please note Mr. Reardon, that at least 80% of Americans want their present healthcare, not Obamacare.

Tim Geitner, the treasury secretary, controls stimulus money and I want to demand published audits of stimulus money.

Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown campaigned against President Obama and Obamacare and won.

The democrats had total control of Congress with large majorities in both Congressional houses, but could not get Obamacare passed; so stop the fairy tales.

In my research, I found healthcare for the uninsured is available for $500 per year and it allows for 12 doctor appointments each year with no co-pay.

what happened to the one time 250.00 we were soppose to get because we did not get cost of living

People receiving social security (mainly the elderly) received $250.00 last year but families with kids got way more, so goes the equal protection clause. The Soetoro administration was going to give seniors another $250.00 but it never materialized, wonder why. We as a society treat our elderly with contempt almost borderline abuse

I'm sorry to be cynical, but after seeing for weeks the unending and growing tragedy of the situation in Haiti, including the spread of various treatable diseases (such as tetanus) as well as TB and other horrible illnesses, I just really doubt the "US is ready to assist..." as Obama quoted. Fortunately Chile is an advanced nation with a stable government and does not have to rely on the false hopes and promises of so-called US government assistance. I recognize fully that individual search and rescue teams from Fairfax, LA and other locations as well as solid organizations such as Partners in Health and Doctors Without Borders have done incredible work in Haiti. Those organizations will always have my support. However, thousands and thousands of Haitians are still without appropriate living conditions, including sanitation, and in desperate need of ongoing medical assistance. To think that government agencies from the US or the UN are capable of assisting in Chile is complete ludicrous, and hopefully their assistance will not be required.

"Can we have just one day without Obama on television or will he suffer withdrawel pains?

Can we have just one day without people like you and your ilk posting a nasty comment about President Obama, or will you suffer withdrawal pains?

The people of a country that is our ally have suffered a natural disaster, and I am proud that our president, who represents all of us (whether you like him or not) has the courtesy to extend to the president and the people of Chile our concerns about their well-being in the midst of disaster.

And I am proud that our president is warning out own citizens to be wary of the impact of that disaster on American lives and counseling our people to take care.

Thank you, Mr. President.

And then we'd have Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity etc. hammering him for not reacting (see Christmas Day bomber). It's nice that you can carry your hypocrisy into battle with you.
