Obama: Vegas remark 'wasn't meant to be a shot'

By Michael D. Shear
LAS VEGAS -- Now THAT'S an apology.

Speaking before the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, President Obama said he didn't mean to take a "shot" at the city when he urged people not to blow their savings in Vegas.

"Let me set the record straight. I love Vegas," he said to applause. "Love Vegas. Last night, I drew a flush on the river and cut the budget deficit in half."

Obama acknowledged that he did "receive a little bit of heat" for his remark. But he insisted that it "doesn't mean I don't love Vegas. It wasn't meant to be a shot. I think everybody here would agree that the only place people should spend their college savings is in college."

Still, he said, he understands how his words were not welcome in a city that has seen tourism plunge during the economic decline.

"I understand how hard things have been," he said. "Las Vegas has been at the eye of the storm. When the economy suffers, the tourism industry is deeply affected. It's been tough going."

Then, perhaps by accident -- or not -- the president adapted the famous "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" phrase.

"What happens in Vegas," he said, "reflects what's happening across America."

Obama is just trying to buy some votes for Reid. Won't work, Obama has single-handedly destroyed the Democratic Party in a single year! Of course, Reid and Pelosi have helped.

obama was absolutely right. two of my neighbors refinanced their homes in late 06 and instead of paying down debts or investing the money in safe instruments for retirement took 45k round the world vacations after dropping 25k in vegas. they now, of course, want the government to save them from their own stupidity while railing against the government for deficit spending. i laugh every day i drive by the for sale signs in a 9 year old car they wouldn't be caught dead in.

It pays to be a democrat who isn't smart enough to figure out they can't pay their mortgage.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - President Barack Obama is unveiling $1.5 billion in housing help, a boost timed to his appearance in the city with the worst foreclosure crisis in the nation.

Obama's move, detailed by aides in advance of his town hall here Friday, is the latest by a White House determined to show it is helping families rebound from a deep recession. The downturn is taking an election-year toll on Obama's party as voter frustration builds.

Obama was to announce that housing finance agencies in the five hardest-hit states in the housing crisis will receive $1.5 billion to help spur local solutions to the problem. Those five are Arizona, California, Florida, Michigan and Nevada.

It's great to have a president that takes responsibility for his mistakes - totally missing during the Bush Error.

Did he apologize for giving US rights to terrorists? Did he apologize for badmouthing the US when on foreign soil? Did he apologize for mispronouncing "corpsman"?

Posted by: cschotta1 | February 20, 2010 3:45 AM | Report abuse

This whole bruhaha kinda pisses me off. Why is this an issue Obama should NOT be applauded for?

Obamas comments were NOT a faux pas! Who exactly thinks a college education should be...gambled away? The Godfather? Gotti maybe? Wtf?

Im far from a cheerleader for Obama. But lets give credit were credit is due..."What happens in Vegas," Obama said, "reflects what's happening across America."

Man I like truth and he's right. Lets fix this mess.

I didn't see anything that could be slightly misconstrued as an "Apology."
We know that O'bama lies. If you google "You lie", O'bama's name comes up.
All of us, with a computer can repeatedly, display, and demonstrate that O'bama's lied continually, after the fact.
What do you have that you can prove to us that Dubya lied?

Of course not, he only took two shots at Vegas in speeches and we all know you must take three before it's believable.

"

Bull sheeet!

The dishonest slug meant every word of his class envy rant.

This incompetent leftist turd makes Jimmy Carter look competent and Bill Clinton honest.

Odumbo and his cabal of leftist democrat feces heads need to be defeated at every turn, so they'll not be abols to destroy our economy, our security and our society."

But NOBODY can make GW Bush, or his father, look either competent or honest!

Any city that depends upon gambling and prostitution for its revenue has no need to apologize....

Posted by: thrh | February 19, 2010 11:54 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, right. Obama was wrong, so now all you loser gambling addicts can continue pouring into Las Vegas what little money you have left after the Wall Street bankers, GOP televangelists and real estate rip off artists have left you destitute. Don't listen to someone who is asking you to think twice about your future. Give it up to the gluttonous suits who tell you that your future is to be found in Las Vegas by winning the lottery, at craps, roulette, etc. Losers!

AIPACiswar, obviously JAH3 has no love for President Obama, but I think in this case, the post was a pointed comment about wishy, washy lawyers. I thought it was quite funny.

Only a dimwit would believe anything from this two-faced liar. But, no matter how many times he flatly reverses himself, Dems gush at every contradiction.

There’s nothing wrong with asking people not to blow their savings in Vegas in tough economic times! When the good times roll, they roll, but now is a good time to be conservative with your capital. This is a rainy day after all. Are people that touchy about protecting Mr. Billion dollar casino man? He sure as hell never gave a thought about your losses when the sun was shining. Suck it up delicate people

Posted by: NotfromAlaska | February 19, 2010 6:41 PM | Report abuse

Obama was right. Vegas is the pits. Did you ever see the little old ladies and little old men gambling their way through their social security checks? It's pathetic and disgusting. Have you seen good people get into debt because they thought they would win big time and solve all their problems? Pathetic and sad.

Instead of slamming because of your predilictions about the president. Why don't you all rise to the occasion and address the issue. Or can't you process the complexities of the issue.

You all sound very angry. I'm glad you have this outlet instead of doing horrible things to others.

Posted by: janetwall | February 19, 2010 6:25 PM | Report abuse

Whether it was a shot or not, Obama knew of the controversey surrounding his comments. He should have apologizied immediately and clarified his statements instead of letting the resentment build.

Posted by: grannysunni | February 19, 2010 6:18 PM | Report abuse

What was it PBO said during the election? "Words matter." The dumb bunny has besmirched Las Vegas twice. If I was the mayor, I'd tell him to pound sand, too.

OhioCitizen: If only we could ALL be as brilliant and intelligent as you. Please, tell us, how can we possibly exist without a brain? If the Democrats were all as smart as you, then they would have passed the Health Care reform and other socialist agenda items when they had the super majority.

As for the Vegas trip, only Obama could think that just by saying "didn't mean any harm" (despite discouraging people from gambling or going to Vegas for business), he's off the hook. He was there to stump for his lackey, Harry Reid. If you were so enlightened, OHIOCITIZEN, then you'd see right through this, right?

I am so impressed by your brilliance.

Contrast this Obama appearance with the footage on C-Span of CPAC where a pack of disheveled bumbling stooges paraded koolaid talking points to a brain dead audience! Ashcroft for instance brought back the complete Bush shtick, visions of God in the justice department etc.

The GOP is rounding up the usual Christian Neocon hacks, they think the memory of Bush has left the national memory. They are in for a giant surprise!

Obama gave a tremendous, long, fact filled, inspiring talk. And all this fool Michael D. Shear can come up with is one pointless and meaningless slip. AND the ftards at the Washpo stick his bs on the front page. Stinking Israel Lobby's work, no doubt.

So the allegedly godless communist president offers some very conventional white anglo saxon protestant republican advice, and still gets heat from eloquent intellectuals like LarryG62.

Which goes to show, I guess, that some people don't really stand for anything except free-floating anger, and that the USA these days includes extraordinary numbers of extraordinarily thin-skinned people ready - no, eager - to take offense at any perceived slight real or imagined.

But apologize for his own deliberate insults, Barry will now hand Las Vegas some more of our taxdollars.
