Schwarzenegger stands up for stimulus bill

By Michael D. Shear

Republican California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger came out swinging Sunday morning on the stimulus bill -- but against members of his own party.

Speaking to host Terry Moran on ABCs "This Week" program, Schwarzenegger accused Republicans of being hypocrites for bad-mouthing the Recovery Act championed by President Obama while also eagerly accepting stimulus money for projects in their states.

"Well, you know, to me I find it interesting that you have a lot of the Republicans running around and pushing back on the stimulus money and saying this doesn't create any new jobs, and then they go out and they do the photo ops and they are posing with the big check and they say, isn't this great?" he said. "Look what the kind of -- the kind of money I provide here for the state, and this is great money to create jobs, and this has created 10,000 new jobs and this has created 20,000 new jobs. And all of these kind of things. It doesn't match up."

That is exactly the argument the White House has been making for more than a week, as the one-year anniversary of the Recovery Act passage sparked a fresh debate about its effectiveness.

Schwarzenegger has long been a thorn in the side of the national Republican party on this subject. During the debate over the stimulus package, Schwarzenegger endorsed the proposal and stood by Obama's side in the months after its passage.

"I have been the first governor of the Republican governors to come out and to support the stimulus money because I say to myself, this is terrific, and anyone that says that it hasn't created the jobs, they should talk to the 150,000 people that have been getting jobs in California," Schwarzenegger said Sunday morning.

after reading most of these posts. it felt like i had to ask what the heck is democrat, republican, or liberal.. when people voted for all these politicians wasn't because they called themselves as democrat or republican.
and why must we fight over stupid crap like that.

Did Schwazenegger really think we couldn't see his motives for supporting the "free money." (I agree with JohnL1's post).

Arnold is transparent - he lost our money - wasted and misused - and now he wants more taxpayer money to bail out our state. So pander to Obama.
Gray Davis was a bargain compared to Arnold.

WARNING!
Don't elect a politician whose only qualification is the ability to pose and perform in ways that are attractive to a majority.
Arnold has no beliefs or spine, but has shifted with the wind of opinion.
He has used tricks and scams to paper over our CA budget for years now, and desperately needs the Feds to bail us out, so he is kissing Obama's ring...
Of course he thinks the free money is "excellent", as he has blown all ours.
What an empty suit!
He stands for whatever is polling well at the moment, which in CA means a constant flip flop flip flop.
But anybody who was ever a Republican has a good career as the "house conservative" for the liberal media.

Hey Rednecks. I have a question for you. You think that an all-white American where everyone have blond hair and blue eyes is what you want isn't it? Question for you birther loving fools. When does the time come in your perfect American when someone eyes aren't blue enough and their skin not pale enough for you, what then? Do you turn on yourselves? Free your race from the "unclean." Listen clowns, this is not the 30s, 40s, or 50s where you can hang a minority because you want to. Or deny rights or all that other racist shi-, that you love so well. The future has been projected to end on 2012. Keep up your agenda like nobody but you idiots are playing attention. Hurt the President and sees what happens.

If I were a Republican and much like the smarter half of Americans... I knew that the G.O.P. was well on it's way to becoming a political dinosaur... ...I'd be turning on my own party too.

Reganomics... Not only was it a massive failure... But it led to the Great Republican Recession !!!

Arnold is a rino. California has elected some of the greasiest representatives in our nation. Pelosi, Waxman, Miller,Feinstein, Woolsey, Boxer, Feinstein, Lee,McEnerney, Waters and the list of this pond scum goes on.

California has an U-6 unemployment over 20%. Yes it is time to pop the corks in California.

Hopefully the voters here will be able to make their way past all of the illegals to vote them out of office in November and 2012. Fyi, the estimated entitlements for illegals in CA every year 12 to 20 billion.

“CA has a 26 billion dollar budget short fall.”

And according to California Department of Finance as of January 1, 2009 California's current population is estimated at 38,292,687
So that’s $679/person, the state should be able to raise the money through various taxes to pay off the shortfall and save money on interest.

Republican Budgetary Model

If the assumption is that municipal, government has to balance their budget each year.
The revenue collected must be enough to the amount received in taxes, block grants, to cover, administration overhead, and municipal services.

Account Receivable $46B
Account Payable $45B

Balance $01B
Tax cuts $03B

Deficit -$02B

The tax cuts have to be paid for, with a sagging economy the revenues receivable has to be more than the account payable. The business receive the tax cuts but pays less taxes, the township may attract more businesses, and pays their employees less. In whole, the township has a deficit and has to raise taxes on the workers or reduce services or reduce administration overhead. The is no way to run a township or the federal government. Because, if it wouldn’t on a small scale it wouldn’t work on a larger scale.

It's amazing: the percentage of "comments" on this and just about every other "reader response" site that are pure ad hominem attacks. I'm not just talking about the sputtering rudeness, which is certainly offensive, but the fact that the argumentum ad hominem--that is, attacking the advocate of a position rather than the position itself--is a long-recognized logical fallacy. For those who don't comprehend that, a fallacy is an invalid argument. It's wrong. And in the case of ad hominem, it's worse than wrong, because it distracts from the actual issue.

Why is it news that a Republican Governor married to a Kennedy would criticize Republicans? If ever B. Frank (D. Ma) or Dodd (D. Conn.) were to criticize a Democrat- that would be news. The nonsense game that the two parties play with one another is simply fodder for the increasingly silly liberal media. No wonder it appeals to liberal Democrats who consider insulting others anonyomously valid political commentary. All it does is reveal that some neanderthals survived.

I agree with you, Gov. Schwarzenegger.

In fact the United States leadership must come up with laws to tax oil companies and other contracting corporates who have benefited extremely from invasion of Iraq. The special tax on these corporates will be to recover cost of Iraq War and pay for rehabilitating the troops injured in Iraq war and to support family of the dead troops.

The business corporations that were awarded lucrative contract in Iraq, are nothing but blood sucking leeches, and should be forced to pay 72 cents on the dollar to US Treasury and other coalition Govts who lost troops in war, in form of special taxes on their income to recover the cost of the Iraq War.

Dick Cheneys of the world cannot be allowed to treat life of dead and injured troops as cheap and expendable.

Dick Cheneys and Glen Becks of the world cannot be allowed to hood wink US taxpayers to shell out US 1 trillion for the unnecesary war and then conveniently award the contracts to their buddies and cronies at Exxon, BP (British Petroleum), Shell, China Petroleum; and then to asuage the hurt feelings of Queen of England nominate Sarah Palin (notice the BP connection and namesake Sarah Ferguson) to vice presidential candidate hoping that a black had no chance of winning against a white.

Please Gov. Schwarzenegger go ahead and do something about such blatant hegemony of few greedy and scum politicians.

And believe, US voters are not so gullible that they can be swayed by silly demonstrations at a CPAC and Tea Parties.

Obama has played the same game. He's taken credit for beinging the economy back from the brink even thought TARP (money given to the banks) was passed by the Bush administration. I have even heard him say the banks had to be saved but also point out he did not pass TARP.

Republicans don't actually oppose spending. Sure, they oppose it in the abstract, but they don't actually oppose it when you look at what the government actually spends money on. This largely reflects the fact that voters dislike the notion of spending in the abstract but actually support the things that the government spends money on.

It's just an inconsistent belief system. At least voters have the excuse of not really knowing what's in the budget. Republicans are basically just pandering.

California is going broke, with all of its wonderful social welfare programs that the Democratic State Legislature has done.

Los Angeles and San Francisco have a 9.75% sales tax rate.

Los Angeles county takes in 85% more money, after adjusting for inflation, from real estate taxes, than they did prior to Prop. 13 in 1978.

They have driven most businesses out of the state. No more oil drilling, refineries, marginalization of factory jobs and the unions? They have screwed the system up entirely, by demanding more, more, more.

The entertainment industry gets out of town, every chance they get, because of the costs and permit process involved with filiming. Aerospace is dead, with King Obummer's end to NASA contracts.

I don't see GM's plant in Van Nuys going back into service and I don't see any aircraft factories out there, running at full-steam. In fact, with the push to end the C-17 program, there goes Long Beach.

King Obummer and the Dummycrats have done wonders for California.

That's why I left 15 years ago and never looked back.

Arnold:

It is known as "Republican hypocrisy" and it is a staple of the new Republican Party. It is closely associated with their new motto: "I don't care if the country fails if it makes Obama and/or the Democrats look bad."

Republicans engineered the present mess: two unfunded, expensive wars started on their watch that they didn't know how to end; a lack of oversight on Wall Street that led to what is a new Depression for millions of people, a loss of American prestige worldwide, etc., etc. I honestly think that the demise and obliteration of the Republican Party is the the only solution. See what you can do.

Red State hypocrisy runs deep: those "celebrating" California's financial mess because of "dem libs" only get partial credit. California is among the leading states (if not the leader) in giving more money to the Federal government than it receives; defacto it is subsidizing the Red States that criticize it and rail against socialism.

Ahnold is an opportunistic hypocrite. 1. He owns seven or eight Hummers (why?) and only converted them to alternative fueling after being criticized for it (of course, he'd campaigned as an environmentalist). He also promised that he would not take special interest money--then promptly set a record for accepting money from special interests.

A little bit of history for those of you that think Schwarzenegger is responsible for California's debt:

Internal memos from the now bankrupt company (Enron) outline the various schemes Enron executives used to defraud officials running the state’s power grid, manipulate energy supplies and literally loot the state treasury of billions of dollars. Throughout this period Enron enjoyed the closest political ties with the Bush White House, which rejected appeals from California officials for federal intervention and the imposition of price caps.

The reason Arnold is criticizing his party is because his party screwed his state... I wish I had a governor that was more concerned about the state than his Presidential bid....

Arnold is both ignorant and hypocritical. When a law is passed and signed, such as the stimulus bill, it becomes law and all citizens, states, etc. are required to follow the law. It does not matter whether they approve of the law or supported it, they must obey it. There are many, many laws that I personally disapprove of or would want changed. That does not mean that I can ignore the law.
Accordingly, it is entirely proper for governors, senators, or other elected officials to protect the interests of their citizens by obtaining the benefits of the law which their citizens are paying for.
Grow up Arnold, you are supposed to be a big boy now.

If your want a Nation like Calif. Keep voting for Left wing Democrats!

California the Golden state, American future, is fast becoming the poster child for an bankrupt third world State! If Obama & the Democrats are successful the Calif. Nightmare will soon be the Nation,s Nightmare!

An unholy alliance of Socialist Democrat politicians, Unions, and Illegal Aliens supporters are feasting at the trough of tax payers paid benefits while taxing & regulating business and the tax paying public into poverty.

The pandering of Left Wing Democrat Politicians to their constituency of Unions, Illegal Aliens and open border supporters, are driving business and citizens to other states & countries, while leaving the parasites & welfare leeches in an increasing bankrupt, crime ridden, dysfunctional state!

For years California has ignored economics 101 and imported Criminals, Uneducated Peons, and poverty from Mexico, which increased Medical, Welfare, Crime, Prison, etc. & adding a estimated 16 billion per year to Calif. State expense to support the invading horde of Illegal Aliens while exporting business and educated tax payers.

Like all Socialist countries the results have been a astronomical increase in social welfare, schooling, prison cost etc. and a lowing of Living standards, Heath care, Education standards, Tax receipts & finally Bankruptcy.

The policies of Obama and Wash. DC Democrats are intent on following Calif. policies and Pro-Illegal Aliens, Pro-Unions and Anti-tax paying citizens and are endorsing the same socialist process of rewarding the Corrupt, Stupid, Foolish, Lazy, Greedy & Criminal while punishing the responsible, honest, law abiding & hard working citizens of American.

Failure to abide by our Constitution against invasion & enforce our Immigration laws and constraints on wages and benefits for public employees will result in turning the Golden State into MexiCalif and the end of the Calif. Dream and the beginning of the MexiCalif. Nightmare!

Amnesty & Citizenship as a reward for their invasion of the USA, with chain immigration will result in the rest of the USA turned into a Spanish speaking third world cesspool and follow California into a polluted, over populated, Spanish speaking, third world Nation of Crime, Corruption, Poverty, Cruelly & Misery modeled on Mexico!

This will result in a population depending on Welfare and the Democrat party, thus assuring the lock on power for the Socialist Democrat party of the United States of Mexico!

The thing that's making Republicans hypocrites is not just accepting the money. Whether you accept or reject the bill your state is still on the hook for the bill so it will be silly not to accept. No the thing that's truly making them hypocrites is going to grand openings celebrating the things the spending bill helped create and bragging about how they were the ones who helped create new jobs and then going on TV and bad mouthing the bill.

Listen it's one thing to say I don't accept the bill but will take the money because it's in the best interest of my state. All people want is for them to not pretend you played any role in bring that money to the state because if it were up to them the money would never have came. Obama is so toasted because of his lack of cojones to confront the Republicans anarchists. Any country needs a strong leader and Obama is a hopeless lazy talker.

For those saying the Arnold is not a Republican because he does not agree 100% with Rush/Palin or Glenn Beck you are simply demonstrating how monolithic, ignorant and non-free thinking the GOP has become. Basically the old Soviet Union was more of a bastion of freedom than the vision that the GOP has for America.

Riight, and never mind the 2,000,000 who were still becoming unemployed during this time.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Yeah, how about that? What are business owners waiting for? Why is everyone expecting President Obama to somehow make jobs appear? What responsibility do the business owners and corporations have to start creating jobs? What about Governors, what are they doing to bring new job to their states? All I hear is people whining, complaining, bi!ching and moaning that President Obama promised jobs. It is time for people , businesses and corporations who are still benefiting from the Bush tax cuts to start doing their part. It is time for Governors and State Senators, Representatives and Mayors to stop whining and start doing something for their states and cities and stop waiting for the President to do all the work.

The only people who have no right to criticize the stimulus bill are those exempt from paying taxes that pay for it. It would be stupid not to take money that you have to repay regardless of how you feel about the legislation.

Tell it like it is Arnold!

Posted by: cliffstangler | February 21, 2010 1:16 PM | Report abuse

Arnold also tried to say that there were NET new jobs created by the so-called stimulus. This would mean that more jobs were created than lost. Any fool can clealy see that the net number of jobs has decreased every month but November in 2009-10. He hasn't a clue.

also, it's okay to come out against your own party...this is NOT A CULT..speak your mind..if you don't like something your own party is doing say it..Arnold can say what is wants because he does not need their money.

One thing is for certain...change has not come to America.. politicians are as bad as ever!!

Schwarzenegger is neither a Republican nor a conservative. His sick parasitic state is about to fall into the abyss and he'll say or do anything to delay its descent. Beg, pander and cry Arnie . . . it's your only hope.

Posted by: rplat | February 21, 2010 1:11 PM | Report abuse

funny, of course the Republicans are hypocrites on this issue. if you are against the stimulus bill then DONT take the money...that is simple. Complaining is the popular thing to do..to help them get re-elected.

Look..most of these politicians are a joke and only care about being re-elected and most of them are not every day people..they make 6 figures and have great healthcare.

What's also sad is some people are a part of the Republican party because they don't want to be a part of party with blacks...now that is simply sad. I will never be a part of party that directly/indirectly hates me because of my race.

Do you know who really wants taxes cut...the rich, they are the people that gain the most with it NOT people that make 20 or 30k a year..but you still have some stupid people that make 20 or 30k wanting a tax cut...what is that..2 more dollars in your pocket!!!

The GOP has koolaid addicts, who are deluded and simple-minded, don't understand the requirements of a truthful statement, and nonetheless get to speak for the Party. Then they have the behind-the-scenes-liars like Rove, who do understand but don't care.

The GOP handbook could be called, "Lee Atwater for Dummies."

Governor Schwarzenegger isn't any more Republican than Michael Steele.
Arnold chiked on every promised reform and even joined the opposition. He's the last Kennedy without the commitment.

why turn it down if you contributed equally to the money being distributed? It's majority rule. You know the money would be better off if it was saved but you want your share if it will go to someone else.

The Governator, who has lots of FU money from his film career, is not afraid to call his fellow repubs out when they are lying or just being obstructionist and ridiculous. Will he ever be the national chairman of the party? Probably not. Does he care? No.

Good for you, Arnold. The only foreign born governor in the (Republican) bunch seems to be the only one to understand that America used to be all about working together. Before party was the most important thing.
Do you think the ones born here have the capacity to reflect on that?

Posted by: edismae | February 21, 2010 12:57 PM | Report abuse

It IS hypocritical. Just about everything this party does is hypocritical. They rail against deficits, but no party has EVER run up larger deficits. When Bush was in office, they huffed and puffed about criticizing a president during war time -- meanwhile, they call Obama every name in the book. On and on and on.

easttxisfreaky:

You are a typical stupid moronic right wing numb nuts blow hard. BTW, I bet you Arnold could kick your pathetic a$$!

The reason the country is in such an economic bind is because of eight years mismanagement (i.e. two deficit financed wars and unpaid for prescription drug entitlement).

You right wing goof balls f'ked up our country so bad with your borrow and spend policies and yet you have the balls to criticize Obama after being in office only one year.

The Republican party and it's lunatic fringe right wing racist supporters are losers.

So I say to you easttxisfreaky and the rest of you bigoted right wing crazies, f'k off!!!

IF you are against the stimulus bill did not support it and do not take any of the money is your state still going to be in on the tax payers paying for said bill? I mean if lets say California would have said no we do not want any would the state taxpayers still be part of the payback? IF yes why the heck not take it you will be paying for it in the end...In the end we ALL will be paying for it to not take it would be stupid! How much money did ca. get to create said jobs? How long does said jobs last a month a year two weeks what is the longevity that's some thing that's missing here...

Schwarzenegger is the hypocrate and cannot take RESPONSIBILITY

Posted by: jayrkay | February 21, 2010 12:48 PM | Report abuse

Easttxisfreaky, you're missing the point. The governor of California is complaining about state representatives who have openly bashed and voted AGAINST the stimulus bill but yet have happily ACCEPTED the monies being offered. It's called hypocrisy and posturing; if you really don't believe in the stimulus package and think it's bad politics and bad for the country, then don't accept the money being offered. It's that simple. And wash out your mouth, while you're at it.

This is uncouth on the part of Schwarzenegger, calling republicans hypocrites. The democrats and the president have a gun and the republicans are given the choice- in front of terrorists you are dictated to act- DO or DIE.

The people in this country do not care how the money comes and they not take any responsibility.
Schwarzenegger is a hypoctrate with a sink-hole in California

easttxisfreaky, why don't YOU STFU, you loser. How much tax to you pay? What are you, a cashier? Go complain to Arnold and watch him pound your fat @ss to the ground.

Schwarzenegger is a bigger failure in office than Obama, if that is possible.

He sits on his fat a.. now demanding that WE taxpayers bail out his failing state, while he goes home to munch on his retirement plan and enjoy his final days.

STFU Arnold, you ridiculous joke.

ANY monies - ANY monies - belong to ME - the American taxpayer. And YOUR FAT A.., nor ANYONE else can criticize my representative fighting for any part of governmental monies that have been doled out. You see, idiot, IT'S ALL TAXPAYER MONEY.
