Congressional Hispanics announce support for health-care bill

By Paul Kane
Allaying a lingering concern about immigration issues in the health-care battle, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus announced its unanimous support for President Obama's key domestic agenda initiative.

The decision knocks down another potential roadblock to reaching the necessary 216 votes for final passage, setting up abortion as the key issue remaining (outside of steep political concerns about the bill's impact on the midterm elections).

Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) and several other CHC members had been threatening to withhold their support because of provisions the Senate added restricting illegal immigrants from using their own money to access the insurance exchanges that would be established by the proposed legislation.

However, Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.), with more than 20 CHC members behind her, told reporters the broader impact of the legislation overrode the other concerns. She said 8.8 million Latinos would gain insurance coverage in the legislation, a "historic opportunity" not to be missed.

Meanwhile, Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-Ind.) -- a key member of the conservative Blue Dog Coalition -- said the estimates from the Congressional Budget Office that the legislation would shave more than $1.2 trillion of the federal deficit "satisfies" his concerns about the fiscal impact of the legislation. Ellsworth, who is running statewide for the Senate, said his only key concern left was the abortion language imposed by the Senate.

For a full list of how representatives have said they will vote -- and who remains undecided -- see The Post's comprehensive and continuously updated "Who's in play" graphic.

The fact is, per the polls 67% of Obama voters do not support a pathway to citizenship, and the same anti amnesty viewpoint is held by Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Blacks, small business overs, CEO's and even a majority of Hispanics.

Amnesty is just a racist demand for preferntial immigration treatment for lawbreakers, almost all of whom per the DHS are Hispanic.

Wow, it is so disapointing to see the lack of actual understanding amongst many of these posts:
1) NumbersUSA is a HATE group, hating on minorities of all kind! Their member are often even unnaware of where their talking points come from...anti immigrants are lacking so much understanding of what immigration law encompasses that you decide to hate on reform because of a falselly taught rhetoric. IMMIGRANTS, DOCUMENTED OR NOT, CONTINUOUSLY CONTRIBUTE TO AMERICA!
2) racist caucus? Which country do you live in my friend. there isn't a white caucus because the caucasian leaders are so divided amongst themselves with special interests that I don't even blame constituents to be thinking that the chc and bc might be racist.
3) 8.8 million DOCUMENTED/CITIZEN/US BORN "LATINOS". Do you even know why they call themselves latinos? For the same reason I can call myself italian and my best friend can call herself lithuanian...YOUR HERITAGE...unless you despise those that came before you so much that you have become so flawed at believing you are an ORIGINAL AMERICAN...those are the natives only...and the "illegal immigrants of centuries past" killed them off and stole their land (immigrants most of the time assimilate with US culture, they aren't here killing your kin by the masses to near extinction).
4) THIS IS ABOUT HEALTHCARE...8.8 million americans (latinos by heritage) are going to get healthcare!
5) not allowed to be in this nation? Who do you think our forefathers took pieces of texas, california, and new mexico from? The irish? NO...SPANIARDS COMMONLY KNOWN IN AMERICA TODAY AS HISPANICS!
6) mass deportation not even in your dreams. Immigrants crweate thousands of jobs in America. Deport 12million immigrants and the US becomes a third world country no doubt about it. The cost to deport is larger than the cost to mantain! And if you also want to get rid of all other immigrants and make the US white-land good luck at removing the largest growing groups from this nation.

Please get your facts a little straight and be smart when making arguments....most I have read in here is senceless hatred!
HEALTH CARE FOR AMERICA NOW, JOBS NOW, & CIR ASAP!

"8.8 million Latinos would gain insurance coverage "

That's the problem, I don't want to pay for them because we all know that they will be subsidized". These illegals come to this country and and demand all of these entitlements. This will be the downfall of the democratic party.

Ah, yet another group that Obama, Rahm, Pelosi, and the rest of the stormtroopers, can bribe to get their way.

This weekend will be a historical turning point in the illegal alien occupation of our country. We as Americans can stand back disinterested and watch, or do the right thing for 15 million US jobless labor force that is climbing to new heights? ITS INCORRIGIBLE that our President-Senate-House would try to pass a suspect CIR (AMNESTY) when Americans are hurting.

NumbersUSA is mobilizing there members in assisting in stopping every amnesty since 2000, and now revving up resources to do the same this time around. Starting FRIDAY (3/19) NumbersUSA on Day 1 will be begin a nationwide effort for activists to visit Member's local Congressional offices at 1:30 p.m. EDT with a signed letter.SATURDAY (3/20) -- On Day 2, they will launch our faxing and petition campaign. When the Members return to their Washington offices, we need them to see your HUGE RESPONSE. It's also a Social Networking Day, so they want members to join them on Face book and Twitter.SUNDAY (3/21) - Day 3, the pro-amnesty organizers will host their rally on the National Mall in Washington D.C., and many anti-immigration organizations will appear there too. MONDAY (3/22) - Day 4, it's NumbersUSA National Call Campaign. The pro-amnesty supporters will be walking the halls of Congress urging Members to pass an amnesty. Not all Hispanics in this country are here illegally.
---
True, but many of the ones here legally seem to put loyalty to la raza ahead of loyalty to their fellow Americans.

It WOULD be nice if we had a caucus to represent native-born, law-abiding, loyal American taxpayers, since our "representatives" seem to be putting us dead last -- way behind illegals, the Mexican drug cartels, Indian outsourcing companies, and Chinese factory owners. But who are we to complain? We are only the people who pay their salaries and provide them with the 3 trillion bucks they squander in Washington every year.

We are nobodies to our "representatives." Oh, they DO put us first on one day of the year, bless their greedy little hearts: April 15. Yeah, on April 15, we're King for Day. Whoopee! Then we go back to being invisible on April 16.

The CHC wouldn't want any "restrictions" on illegal aliens. No way.

Aint diversity grand? The Congressional Hispanic Caucus represents a large group of people, most of whom should not be in America to begin with. But why is there a Congressional Hispanic Caucus in the first place?

And then there is Reresentative Luis Gutierrez, of Illinois, who has introduced the Amnesty bill, that seeks to legalize illegal immigrants. Remember them? The people who broke our immigration laws and now want Amnesty.

What an unfunny joke. Representative Gutierrez is disloyal to the United States and its citizens, people like you and me.

Tell elected representatives to oppose amnesty, and to support Representative Peter King and his House Resolution 1228, and to support Senator Inhofe's Senate 991, both English friendly proposals.

Never forget. This is our country, not the illegal aliens country. And it should not be the country of any elected representative who puts those who are illegally in our country in front of any American.

While I agree that undocumented people should not take advantage of the legislation's benefits. There are Hispanic people who are U.S. citizens--if that answers your question as why there is a "Hispanic Caucus." Not all Hispanics in this country are here illegally.

It appears that more and more of the House Democrats are recognizing that they should not let the "perfect" be the enemy of the "good". They also have come to recognize that it is truly immoral to have 32 million Americans who live each day without health insurance plus thousands more who lose coverage EVERY DAY.

So, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus represents illegal immigrants. Great! Do we Americans have a Congressional American Caucus to represent us? Just wondering.
