DHS corrects report that overstated ICE deportations under Obama

By Spencer S. Hsu and N.C. Aizenman
Months after reporting that the number of illegal immigrants removed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement increased 47 percent during President Obama's first year in office, the Department of Homeland Security on Monday corrected the record, saying the actual increase in those deported and "voluntary departures" was 5 percent.

The 387,790 illegal immigrants removed by ICE in fiscal 2009 was still a record, as cited in the department's Fiscal Year 2009 Annual Financial Report, which was dated Nov. 16.

A DHS spokesman said the report erred by lumping together in the 2009 figure the number of illegal immigrants deported with those permitted to leave on their own power rather than being physically removed by ICE, an option called "voluntary departure."

Including both categories, ICE removed 387,790 in illegal immigrants in the year ending Sept. 30, 2009, compared with 369,221 in 2008 -- a 5 percent increase.

Counting only those deported by ICE, the total grew 13 percent, from 264,541 in 2008 to 298,401 in 2009.

In a statement, the department said, "We are working with the Chief Financial Officer to clarify this information."

The error came to light Monday when grass-roots immigrant rights groups assailed President Obama's immigration policies, calling his record on deportations harsher than that of his predecessor, George W. Bush.

Separately, ICE reported that as of Feb. 1, four months into fiscal 2010, total removals are running at a rate 20 percent below last year, or 17 percent lower counting only deportations.

A DHS spokesman said figures "inherently fluctuate month to month."

Matt Chandler added, "This administration is focused on smart, effective immigration enforcement that focuses first on those dangerous criminal aliens who present the greatest risk to the security of our communities, not sweeps or raids to target undocumented immigrants indiscriminately."

Of course, Obama will not tell the truth about immigration -- he wants open borders, no checks, no passports, nothing. We need to throw all the radical left-wingers out, first by evicting Obama from the White House. Then, maybe he can get a job -- but I doubt it.

Well said Iconblaster. The economic consequences of deporting 12 million nationals that have entered unauthorized (without the AG's permission) or overstayed their visas would be devastating to our country. We are already feeling it's 2003-2008 deportation impact. Just take a look at Postville, Iowa for example. Arpaio is another good example. He's no hero. He's the Jim Crow of the 21st century. On top of that, the dude has wasted millions of tax payer's dollars on law suits. Kudos to the administration for fact checking.

Native born Americans do 47% of farm jobs,
* Maids and housekeepers: 55 percent native-born
* Taxi drivers and chauffeurs: 58 percent native-born
* Butchers and meat processors: 63 percent native-born
* Grounds maintenance workers: 65 percent native-born
* Construction laborers: 65 percent native-born
* Porters, bellhops, and concierges: 71 percent native-born
* Janitors: 75 percent native-born

There are NO JOBS Americans won't do. This is the real tragedy of having 8 million illegal aliens employed illegally, while 15 million Americans are looking for any job to feed and shelter their families.

Reading all the comments regarding this article makes me sick. To think that the ancestors of those given their opinion now invaded our continent first of all illegally. Now they claim the land as theirs (typical white men concept). Where is the concept of support to the disadvantage? where is the belief of "American" people of supporting women and children?

Before given our opinion, we also need to investigate further how this government has worked and how its actions has hurt other communities that we don't know at all. REMEMBER IRAQ?, one quick example. What about all the policies enacted in Mexico and Latin America, countries with high numbers of "illegal aliens" come from. Or what about the large U.S. corporations that transfer their whole copanies to our countries because there is fewer restrictions regarding environment contamination, cheap labor without rights to form unions, etc. etc. Why don't we talk about them, why do we let our "American" government to allow this to happen. Why don't we just focus on investing in our own country and let alone other countries to deal with their people and stop being messing around with lives of innocent people around the world that in the end they arrive to our county and we don't know how to deal with them but talk trash about them.

Tawodi, I think your estimate of the number of illegal immigrants in the country, as 10% of the population, is off by an order of magnitude. I've seen no estimates higher than about 12 million people illegaly in the country (and that includes children). But there are something like 360 million Americans, so the percentage of total ought to be about 3%.

I think the effect of that 3% on indigenous unemployment is probably negligible. In previous difficult economic times, I worked in the grape vinyards in the San Joaquin Valley... ordinary labor, pruning or tying vines, turning trays, cutting grapes... on a crew of Mexican laborers. I saw hundreds of workers, in the fields I worked and those nearby. Except for the owner himself and his sons, I was the ONLY "white boy" I saw working... not because they wouldn't hire anyone else (they hired me), but because nobody else was willing to do the work.

That is typical. Illegal immigrants get jobs other people don't want to do. If you take away the undocumented labor, some of those jobs would simply not be done at all, some others would be filled... though possibly at a higher wage, with the result of higher prices to consumers, and reduced profits to the producers.

Whatever ordinary Americans might gain in employment opportunities, we would only lose again in higher prices for food, for other commodities and for services.

Low-paid laborers working for a living are not our problem, and getting rid of them is no solution to the real problems.

Why are deportations down 20% this year? Once we get a handle on the criminal illegals, why are the others, who are criminals because they violate our immigration law being targeted and exited.

We have almost 10% of our population out of work, and over 10% of the total population in this country at the moment are illegals. This adds another 10% problem that we have to deal with. We do not need cheap labor in this country. We need labor to have an opportunity for wage growth, rather than wage depression that we have suffered for last 10-15 years.

We must help our citizen and legal immigrant unemployed, and we must encourage those who are illegal to go home and use the correct process if they want to return. Until we do that, we face the possibility of losing our entire way of life to a facistic "one world government" advocated by the wealthiest oligarchs in this country.

This on top of the article about "Immigrant Groups" pushing for amnesty for illegal aliens! Here in AZ we have Republicans targeting a Sheriff (also a Republican) who is actually doing his job and rounding up illegals who break our laws. Of course, they have already broken our immigration laws, so should be picked up and deported for that.

But the lawmakers in AZ say he is "picking on" the hispanics in Maricopa County! If you are there legally and have verifiable documentation, you shouldn't have a problem. If you don't have legal citizenship, then you deserve to be in jail or in a tent city - actually you deserve to be deported!

Napolitano is a waste of time - she has made illegal aliens her focus for shelter and other aid while our own legal citizens do without. If the administration (and I, a registered Independent, voted for Obama) pushes for amnesty for illegals, it will have a huge fight on its hands.

Illegal aliens demand "rights" to which they are not entitled.

The Federal Government has failed us BIG TIME in allowing this INVASION of the ILLEGAL ALIENS. Let's do your job now and get these illegal aliens out of this Country! Let's get the raids started again! They were working. Let's get the local police involved for help to get these illegal aliens. Arizona is doing the very best it can to deal with these illegal aliens as is Oklahoma and many other States. What is wrong with Homeland Security? Do you want amnesty for these illegal aliens so you don't have to do your job? Let's get on the ball there, Janet Flintstone! Get the illegal aliens out of this Country and back where they belong with their families!

Martin Luther King “a time comes when silence is betrayal.”

People need to confront the President, Senators and Representatives for allowing the pain and suffering caused to Americans directly because these so-called leaders have allowed the invasion and occupation of our country by 12 to 30 million lawbreaking illegal aliens.

You elected Democrats and Republicans are allowing, even encouraging, the 8 million illegal aliens to stay in American jobs obtained by committing felonies like income tax evasion, lying on I-9 forms, using stolen Social Security Numbers and using forged and/or fraudulent IDs in an unholy alliance with greedy, criminal employers. How do you have the audacity and shamelessness to face the 15 million unemployed Americans looking for jobs to feed and shelter their families and ask them to support giving amnesty to the criminals causing their grief and woe?

Obama, Graham, Gutierrez, McCain, Menendez, Pelosi, Reid, Schumer and incompetent Napolitano, SHAME ON YOU!!!

It certainly should not come as a surprise that the truth is not actually being reported by this administration. The truth is not something that they respect. It would be great if all illegal immigrants and their families were sent home. No one has the intestinal fortitude to actually try to do that. However, it would instantly create 18 million jobs for US citizens and please do not try to claim those jobs are jobs that US citizens won't do. That is propaganda and completely untrue.

Oh, what a shock, we can't even depend on our government to send illegal aliens home, especially those with a criminal record in US.

And Obama expects us to trust him on reforming the immigration system and controlling the border.

Immigration reform is just an open door policy to give anyone citizenship to this country!

One more "mistake" by the organization run by Janet "Do Nothing" Napolitano.
And, she is just one of the incompetent slugs put in office by the incompetent in chief Odumbo.

This administration is loaded with inept dimwits like Napolitano, Biden, Panetta, Clinton, Holbrooke, Geithner and a host of other leftist clowns who can't manage their own affairs, let alone those of this once great nation.
They are doing all they can to destroy our economy, security and our health care.
What despicable morons.

Why do we fund Napolitano's blunders?

In a budget needing review, putting the FBio back into place as our protection on the turf was certainly dollar for dollar more viable.

They had a glitch in their agents getting the plane students on the radar in time, but a whole new totally blundering agency with no Congressional overstite is hardly an improvement.
