Massa aide contacted Pelosi's office in October with concerns about lawmaker

By Carol D. Leonnig
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office was contacted by a top aide to then-Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) in October with concerns about the lawmaker's behavior toward young, male staffers, a congressional source with knowledge of the investigation into Massa's actions said Wednesday night.

Earlier in the day, the House ethics committee announced that it had closed its investigation of Massa, citing the fact that the Democrat resigned from the House on Monday and was no longer under the panel's jurisdiction.

Joe Racalto, Massa's chief of staff, told Pelosi's director of member services in October that he was uncomfortable with Massa's behavior, specifically that the lawmaker was living with several male staffers and routinely used sexually explicit language with them. The call to Pelosi's director of member services was prompted, according to the source, by the fact that Massa made a lunch date with a young, male staffer who worked in Rep. Barney Frank's (D-Mass.) office.

According to a person briefed on the call, Racalto was concerned that the lunch followed a pattern of Massa trying to spend time alone with young, gay men with no ostensible work purpose. Racalto, according to the source, also alerted Frank's chief of staff at the time.

Neither Racalto nor anyone from Pelosi's office responded immediately to requests for comment Wednesday night.

I am a long time democrat but if the dems refuse to kick Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid out of their current jobs then they will lose big time in the 2010 and 2012 elections. It is not likely that Reid will win his election so good he will be gone.

SEE, Rep. Kennedy was RIGHT about the news media! This crazy **** Massa is all over the front pages.

I blame the news media the most for NOT living up to their public service, 4th Estate obligations to provide responsible journalism and legitimate investigative reporting on the vital issues of our day. I DON’T CARE TO KNOW ABOUT THE LATEST CELEBRITY WORSHIP GOSSIP or sensational murder case/trial… GIVE ME SOMETHING I CAN USE TO PROBLEM SOLVE.

It’s because of you news SELL-OUTS that right-wing fanatical MORONS are STILL able to drive public policy. Does ANYONE believe that the Glenn Beck/Sarah Palin/Rush Limbaugh GROUPIES would have ANY political clout if you news media HO’s weren’t providing these extremist nutcases with undo attention?

Did you provide national coverage to Left-wing protest movements? I hardly saw a news story about the 10’s of 1000’s who gathered to protest the war in Iraq or all the LIES, waste, fraud, abuse, incompetence, scandal, corruption, reckless economics, arms dealing, war profiteering, Constitutional violations and a Corporate Crime Wave of EPIC PROPORTIONS. With a side of GOVERNMENT welfare for the rich…

Did you so called fiscal conservatives do a #*~/’n thing while the scheming silver spoons privatized profits and socialized loses?

Has ANYONE ever tried to have a reasonable DEBATE with a Dittohead? You’d get more content going to the zoo and talking to the monkeys.

Did Andrea Mitchell or any of the highly paid national news anchors let the public KNOW about how Alan Greenspan was promoting FRAUD on Wall St? NO! Did you go to Florida during the 2000 presidential election to make sure ALL the votes were counted? NO! Did you COWARDS find out where all those missing BILLIONS of dollars and 175,000 weapons disappeared to in Iraq? NO!

Did you provide the Tea Baggers and anti-health Care reform Conservatives with the legitimate information they needed so they wouldn’t come off looking like a bunch of holier-than-thou mental deficient’s?

Even though Republicans in Congress are now giving Americans the middle finger… these brainwashed idiots keep voting for Republican Party, silver spoon, con artists that want to turn freedom into a delicate concept and turn the USA into a Corporate owned, slave labor, Police State OR Communist China? HELL NO!

AND WHAT ABOUT THAT DISTURBING Supreme court decision giving MORE POWER TO MULTI-NATIONAL CORPORATIONS TO INFLUENCE OUR ELECTORAL PROCESS? What happen to THAT story?

Can you imagine the number of congressmen who'd be removed if having lunch with a young "female" staffer was illegal?

THis article is nothing but air.. oh no, he had LUNCH with someone who doesn't work for him!

Having worked on the Hill, what exactly was Pelosi's office supposed to do? While unnerving and creepy, it is not illegal or against House rules for members of Congress to have lunch with staffers who don't work for them. I knew plenty of members over the years who did the same thing with female staff.

What is important is that as soon as something actionable - a sexual harassment charge - was brought to the House Leadership's attention, they moved immediately demanding it be referred to the Ethics Committee or they would do it.

And there is a very important distinction b/w Massa and Mark Foley so far. Foley was hitting on pages, who are minors under the supervision of the House. Ever since the Gerry Studds/Dan Crane page scandal in the mid-1980s, there are explicit guidelines about what members/staffers can and cannot do with pages. Foley violated just about everyone of them. Additionally, the House Leadership at the time knew about it and DID NOTHING!

One other thing I am going to add - Massa is a complete loon. How did this guy even get elected?

So we're waiting for Pelosi's response. How long a wait I wonder...

But see, it wasn't an issue until Massa wouldn't play ball with Nannie. When it became an issue, she, PBO and Dead Fish Rahm pushed him out on his arse... not that he didn't deserve it.

Nannie can overlook a lot of transgretions (see also William Jefferson, Charlie Rangel, Jack Murtha) as long as the perp plays ball with Her Majesty.

Tickle Me Elmo is a nut case who deserved to be shown the door. But that doesn't mean Nannie et. al. would have done it - unless, of course, he wouldn't follow directions from Madam Speaker.

Nannie, PBO and Rahm may not be directly involved in his leaving, but you can bet their fingerprints are all over it.

Not only is Elmo a closet gay, he's also a coward for running away.

Isn't it just as suspicious that Barney Frank, who's already been admonished by an ethics panel, has staffed his office with young gay men (not out of solidarity, but because he wants to work in a target rich environment)?

If this is TRUE then Pelosi shouls be charged with deriliction of duty for not reporting it to the ethics committee,or at the most hindering proscocution(sp). But I feel this is all just more Alinsky tactics of demonizing the target!

Sounds to me like Pelosi tried to cover it up like the Pope tried to cover up pedophile priests.

After this Obamacare robbery, what small potatoes not acting on a staffers report of abuse! What type of behavior is going to outrage people about Pelosi now?
