Obama intensifies courtship of House Dems on health care

By Garance Franke-Ruta
President Obama upped the pressure Thursday on House Democrats to pass health-care legislation, announcing a goal of March 18 for completion of the bill. He also is blocking out time on his schedule to court -- and address concerns of -- some of the chamber's most liberal members, as well as an array of moderates whose votes could prove critical.

Members of minority and progressive caucuses have been invited to gather with the president at 1:30 p.m. Eastern time at the White House. An hour later, he will meet with leaders of the moderate New Democrat Coalition in the Oval Office

Invitees to the early session include:

Rep. Madeleine Bordallo (Guam), Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair, Health Care Task Force Chair
Rep. Donna Christensen (Virgin Islands), Congressional Black Caucus Chair, Health Care Task Force Co-chair
Rep. Danny Davis (Illinois), Congressional Black Caucus Chair, Health Care Task Force Co-chair
Rep. Raul Grijalva (Ariz.), Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-chair
Rep. Mike Honda (Calif.), Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus Chair
Rep. Dennis Kucinich (Ohio), Congressional Progressive Caucus, Health Care Task Force Co-chair
Rep. Barbara Lee (Calif.), Congressional Black Caucus Chair
Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (Calif.), Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Health Care Task Force Co-Chair
Rep. Jan Schakowsky (Illinois), Congressional Progressive Caucus, Health Care Task Force Co-chair
Rep. Nydia Velazquez (N.Y.), Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair
Rep. Lynn Woolsey (Calif.), Congressional Progressive Caucus Co-chair

Those who'll join the president at 2:30 include:
Rep. Jason Altmire (Pa.), NDC Health Task Force Co-Chair
Rep. Melissa Bean (Illinois), NDC Vice-Chair & Whip
Rep. Lois Capps (Calif.), NDC Health Task Force Co-Chair
Rep. Joseph Crowley (Calif.), NDC Chair
Rep. Ron Kind (Wisc.), NDC Vice-Chair
Rep. Allyson Schwartz (Pa.), NDC Vice-Chair, Health Task Force Co-Chair
Rep. Adam Smith (Wash.), NDC Vice-Chair

After all that, Obama will sit down with New York Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) in the Oval Office.

It sort of reminds me of Dunkirk.. their backs are to the sea and the sackers of Delphi and Rome (Huns and Gauls) are quickly approaching from the front. Well, except, no rescue vessels are on the way.

This whole health care thing is about jobs jobs jobs, that's why obama is pushing for this hard. We conservatives, on the other hand, have framed the debate in a manner that has crippled our ability to see it for what republicans in the past would have seen it. We are all in it together, and reform is a path to new jobs, medical service, providers and even insurers - and they can't be off-shored. I have changed my mind I hope you will take a look and think about it too
